Run etc-update. Type the number of each file that shows up, and

you may choose to use the '-5' option.

I am not very clear of what the advice indicated " then update

etc-update will update all the config files for portage. but make
backups of files like /etc/make.conf, because -5 option will overwrite
all the files that etc-update lists. you'll lose your USE variables and
gentoo mirrors and all otherwise.

[gentoo-user] Permanently set parameters for eth0

2003-10-20 Thread Michael Gruetzner
Hi,

I need to set my network device from 100MB/Fullduplex to 10MB/Halfduplex.
I use ethtool to set the needed values but when I reboot, they are lost
and my network card is on 100MB/FD again.
Is there a way to store my preffered settings and autoload them when eth0
is comming up or do I have to write a custom start script?

Thanks for any help.

I had instaled gtk+ 1.2.0. After ugrading to 2.2.1 all went well.
I don't know why emerge did not trigger the upgrade himself (the requirement
was in the *.emerge file of avidemux).

This as hint for others with similar problems ...

Re: [gentoo-user] Missing /dev/sda* entries ???

2003-10-20 Thread Bill Kenworthy
Came onto this late but:
usb-storage ties itself to an instance so each time you plug/unplug the
cammera, rmmod the stack and re-modprobe it. Does the camera name show
when you do a cdrecord -scanbus? Note that it could be /dev/sd[abc](n)
- keeps moving around at times. My info here - its on a laptop and the
cdwriter came adrift and needs a reboot to recognise it, but the camera
works fine. I just unplugged the usb-mouse, plugged in the camera and
turned it on and ran the commands below.

I struggled with this same problem for 2 weeks. My solution: give up until mod_perl-2.0.

What if I install apache1.3 and the lower version of mod_perl would that solve the problem ?
Its very possible. In my case, it was on a production server that I couldn't afford the

2) How to update ALL configuration files collectively/simultaneously

I struggled with this same problem for 2 weeks. My solution: give up until mod_perl-2.0.

I'm no expert but it looks to me like USB is working. Perhaps you need
to make the device nodes for /dev/sd*? You can find out the details
in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt, for example:
# mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1

I tried to create the device but then when i try to mount the filesystem
i get the following error:
bash-2.05b# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera;
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
Also, I noticed something new.
I don't get the entry /dev/sda* created when i plug the camera but
i get the following trace in syslog:
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:07.2-1 address 3
usb.c: USB device 4 (vend/prod 0x4a9/0x3075) is not claimed by any active
driver

The number '4' increases everytime i plug my camera.
So it seems that something happens but this is not enough
for me to be able to create this entry /dev/sda...
I have ben looking on the gentoo forum. I found a lot of similar
threads. I found
- one which said there was a bug in the scsi driver
- one which said we need a module 'hotplug'
- one which says 'usb-uhci' instaed of 'uhci'
(How can i know which one is good for me? uhci or usb-uhci?)
It seems to be a common problem with no generic solution :-(

So I took a little advice from both, downloaded a new copy and ran make oldconfig. I
am still not able to get this to compile. I get

net/built-in.o(.text+0x536f5): In function 'ipip6_rcv':

make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux] Error 1

and then it dies. If I remove the IP6 option from my config file, it will compile but
the kernel will still not boot past initializing my CD-RW.

Just FYI a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 seemed to have
done the trick. Did that and the 'file not found' errors from grub when
I was doing the 'setup (hd0)' step went away. Still have to reboot and
see if it's actually booting, but I have high hopes :)

It only ruthlessly overwrites if you specifically tell it to do so (the
-3 or -5 options). If you simply type the number of the file to update,
and merge the files, it merges them.

Personally, I merge them manually in a second term while viewing the
diff etc-update shows me because it's still too annoying.

No, because I thought that would ruthlessly overwrite my entries with updated

Log out of GNOME2, log in to a console, and edit your $HOME/.gnome2/session
to remove all programs you don't want to open at startup. Retain numbering
starting at 0, and change the num_clients setting at the end.

Log back into GNOME2 and open the Sessions control panel. Remove the
setting to save settings at logout. This ought to fix things for you.

I'm not using Alsa, but I have in the past. You'll have to use some sort of

Try using esd (ulch!) with esddsp. (esddsp program1; esddsp program2)

If yes, everything is fine

stop using oos and start using alsa.

I would replace xawtv with xawdecode (it reads xawtvs config file, looks
similar, but I able to switch between mono and stereo even if v4l got loaded
in XF86Config.)

Bill,
I use threading so I can keep track of what's interesting to me in the
1000+ emails I get every day. If something I'm following is not
threaded, chances are I'll accidentally delete it because I don't have
an infinite amount of time to sort through my mail.

I imagine many people are in similar situations.

[gentoo-user] QUAKE3 on 2.6.0-test8-mm1 with VIA Chipset...

2003-10-20 Thread Jerry McBride

If you're into running Quake III Arena locally, you know you can't do with out
audio!!!

After moving to the mm-sources for the 2.6.0 series kernel, I've noted some
serious flakyness with the VIA integrated audio on my favorite MSI Ultra 2
computer. Being able to have audio was hit or miss up until 2.6.0-test5-mm4
and then disapeared there after, never to return...

Problems with the integrated audio in the VIA chips seems to be rather
prevalent with the 2.6.0 kernel and probably quite unrelated to the fact that
I chose the mm-sources as my 2.6.0 kernel solution. Fact is, there's a lot of
help on the net that goes along ways for fixing the problem, but none worked
for me, as well as my solution has. The fixes I found would work, but I would
experience random lockups that I could easily prove to be caused by flaky
audio support. Also, mp3 playback was... well... unnerving as the player
would loose sync at random times and drive me and the family nuts. :')

However. I finally sat down and did my research and got it all straightened
out now. No more lockups, no more funky audio behavour, etc(tm)...

And here's how...

The skinny is... Compile the kernel with the following sound support turn on
as modules or built in... all other sound options turned off:

#
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=y

#
# Generic devices
#
CONFIG_SND_MPU401=m

#
# PCI devices
#
CONFIG_SND_VIA82XX=m

#
# Open Sound System
#
CONFIG_SOUND_PRIME=m
CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX=m
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m
CONFIG_SOUND_DMAP=y

After the compile and reboot to the new kernel, modprobe as needed. All I do
is list snd-via82xx in the 2.6 module config file and no other sound module.
This one single module will drag in the whole sound setup... Don't believe
me? Do a lsmod and see for yourself. ;')

Install the alsa devices in /dev. I did this by running the "snddevices"
script found in an "alsa-driver" tarball. Once the devices are created, move
to /dev, rm the existing dsp device and "ln -s /dev/adsp0 dsp".

Now, when ever an application calls /dev/dsp, it'll be using the adsp instead.

I lost my notes and the URL, but I believe ALSA refers to /dev/adsp as being
the alsa oss emulator?

Now the magic, either from the command line or your favorite startup script
execute:

echo "erase" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "* 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

Once you're all done with this, you're ready to play QUAKEIII or listen to
your favorite audio entertainment

Go get them!

THE FINE PRINT: I only guarentee that this works 100% on my computer. Sorry...

There is only a "3" and "3.1" directory in /usr/kde. Should there be more?

[gentoo-user] cmedia 8738 + bt878, no sound

2003-10-20 Thread Greg Donald

I have been using Gentoo for about a year now on servers. Last week I decided
to turn my WinXP system into a dual-boot Gentoo/WinXP setup. I've since been
installing lots of software and customizing things. I like to figure stuff out
on my own if I can but I am however currently stumped with a TV tuner software
issue.

I have the Asus a7v333 motherboard with onboard sound, it has the the CMedia
8738 chipset:

> grep audio /proc/pci
Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 16).

I have a pci TV tuner card with the Brooktree 878 chipset:

> grep Capture /proc/pci
Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 2).
Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 2).

My sound works great alone, applications like xmms play and all, but I cannot
hear any sound from my TV tuner applications. I have xawtv and mythtv
installed, both work but with no sound.

Here are my modules currently:

I am using the 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 kernel. I have reconfiured it many different
ways, trying all the related drivers as modules or not. Nothing I try seems to
work. I even tried using a generic 2.4.22 kernel over the past couple of days
but am not getting any further.

Anyone know what I might try to change or install or reconfigure to get sound
working with my TV applications?

Thanks,

[gentoo-user] Stop Session Saving

2003-10-20 Thread Matt Neimeyer
How do I stop the session manager in Gnome 2.4 from remembering
anything?

I want each session to start with nothing open no matter what I was
doing last time. I've tried save-session enabled with nothing open
followed by un-selecting save-session in the hopes of the last saved
session having nothing... I've tried other mixtures of enabled and
disabled session saving and nothing seems to work.

Any advice?

Thanks!

The section he quoted was step 27 of the installation guide.

I think d and p are the device and partition, X and Y are the numerical values
of those devices and partitions.
If you correctly mounted the "devicetree into the new environment" you should
see what you need in /dev/ataraid, you gotta love devfs.

Do what it says :)
I use vo=x11 and/or vo=sdl, but try them all, can't hurt.
If you get it working, emerge aalib, then possible reemerge mplayer and use
vo=aa, it will rock your world :)

That should be cool, given all the MD5-sum checking. Would NFS not do
the right thing, you will get a sensible error and can try again.

Seeing the thread was originally about a server environment, I want to add
just one small possible problem in this scenario. What if two computers are
trying to fetch the same file at the same time? What happens is that they
both fail. Just playing the devil's advocate... for the most part, this
situation is easy to avoid but one must be aware of it before actively

Or a normal proxy which requires authentication, then specify the
FETCHCOMMAND and RESUMECOMMAND in /etc/make.conf, make it unreadable
by the
normal users and your set.
	This is a possible solution, but teachers don't like to set up a
proxy (if
anyone get the pass, he can access to internet from machines not
allowed). I
think the best solution will be that emerge could print uris, so i
could
print them to a file, fetch them from master server (running suse) and
the
share them using NFS. Unfortunatelly, emerge can't do this ATM. What
do you
think about requesting this feature to portage developers? Will be to
hard to
implement?
I don't think you need to add this as a feature. I think that one each
Gentoo machine you should be able to add an alias or wrapper so that
`emerge -f somepackage` really calls `emerge -fp somepackage >>
/path/to/shared/NFS/export/somefile.txt`. Then set up a cron job so
that every minute the server wgets each line in that somefile.txt.

This needs some tidying & error trapping, but is a reasonable basis to
work from, I think.

You can add a start-up script for your DSL in your init.d folder.
It should look like this : ( /etc/init.d/net.adsl )
#!/sbin/runscript
# Based on a script found on gentoo forum
#depend () {
#   need net

start () {
 ebegin "Starting ADSL:"

}
status () {
 ebegin "Checking ADSL status:"

first of all: did you run an "emerge win32codecs divx4linux" ?
i prefer xine. run xine, then simply choose VCD from the gui. that's it!

Re: [gentoo-user] libquicktime vs quicktime4linux

2003-10-20 Thread Alan
Check the contents of your plugins directory (both the
/usr/lib/MozillaFirebird one and your $HOME one (not sure where that is
though)) and make sure that the old .so files that are related to
quicktime are out of there. qpkg -l should show you where the
files are installed. At this point I'd almost suggest just nuking the
quicktime4linux or whatever packages you have and getting your browser
up and going, then go with the mplayerplug-in.

my problem isn't playing quicktime files, it's that MozillaFirebird is

Portage has 3 quicktime related packages: quicktime4linux, libquicktime,

libquicktime.so (.a); but neither solves my little problem with

Verily so. Adobe Professional for Mac seems quite competent; although

change the content of the text also.

There is a pdflib available for Linux which allows you to work with the

1) I don't really know how useful it is - the documentation is quite
heavy going, and so it's probably not for casual use.
2) Only the demo version is free.

My laptop is a Celeron 2.4Ghz and in my testing it was a fair bit faster
with -march=pentium4. BUT!!! Note that the current GCC code produces
bad SSE2 instructions and so Pentium4 should not be used. So use
penium3 instead (which has sse support unlike i686).

Take a look at www.freehackers.org/gentoo/gccflags/flag_gcc3.html
There you find -march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer as right
setting for you as the Celeron is based on the P4.

You could even use pentium4 (which would enable SSE2 optimizations).

Re: [gentoo-user] libquicktime vs quicktime4linux

2003-10-20 Thread Chris Graves
my question actually stems from mozilla-firebird. At startup, it
apparently checks libquicktime version and intermittently generates an
error about the version being >5 and dies.

Portage has 3 quicktime related packages: quicktime4linux, libquicktime,
and openquicktime. The latter two I know for sure provide
libquicktime.so (.a); but neither solves my little problem with
mozilla-firebird. The most disturbing issue to me is the intermittency
of the problem. I had the same problem a couple months ago, got
discouraged, unmerged mozilla-firebird, and then re-emerged a couple
weeks ago and have been using it since without a hitch until this morning.

any thoughts?

I happen to be on a Windows box at the moment so I can't verify this...

I recall that I was asked at install time whether I wanted to install the
extension shared or not. I also recall a non-obvious response was
required (Cancel?).

Anyway, I know that I could not get the shared option to work with my
existing users perms so I tried the "other" option and it worked (Tab
Extension).

you would want to use march anyway, if you are looking for most
optimization, but i am not 100% sure if you want pentium3 or i686, i am
99% sure its pentium3 you want, i686 is generic so i am pretty sure, but
dont hang me up on it :-)

[gentoo-user] USB printer module in development-sources

2003-10-20 Thread romildo
Hello.

I am running sys-kernel/development-sources-2.6.0_beta8,
which I believe has been compiled with support for USB
printers, but I am not able to load the kernel modules
uhci and printer (they are not found by modprobe).

# uname -a
Linux gentoo.malaquias.no-ip.org 2.6.0-test8 #2 Sat Oct 18 21:32:45 BRST 2003 i686 AMD
Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

# grep -i print /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test8/.config
CONFIG_PRINTER=m
# CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PRINTK is not set
CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=m

Maybe the modules have changed its name.

Any clues?

Yup. I discovered (by trial and error) that there are some subtleties
to how grub sees disks. I have both IDE and SCSI hard drives in my
computer. I installed to the SCSI drive. However, when I booted the
Gentoo LiveCD (for installation), I had to do a "modprobe sym53c8xxx"
so that Linux could see my SCSI card and disk (my CD-ROM is IDE).
Keep in mind, the IDE drive had already been recognized by Linux. So
during the install, (hd1,0) was my SCSI drive, and (hd0,0) was my IDE
drive.

My boot order (as configured by the BIOS), is Floppy, IDE CD-ROM,
SCSI.

So when I actually boot the *installed* version of Gentoo, my SCSI
hard drive becomes (hd0,0) and the IDE hard drive becomes (hd1,0). In
other words, I used (hd0,0) in my grub.conf file.

Fun stuff :)

root (hd0,0)
is what you need. That means the first partition on the first disk - it
doesn't matter that it's scsi.
