I do not want to put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in my profile, that will ALWAYS merge unstable/masked packages, which IMHO, is stupid if you want to maintain a stable system. No. You misunderstood me. I am saying that exporting the environment variable to something shorter makes it easier to type. So instead of typing ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge one can simply export this environment to a smaller variable e.g. $AK export AK="env ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86" and then one can type simply $AK emerge packagename (shorter to type) which is much easier to type. What you are talking about is to put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 in /etc/make.conf which asks portage to use the unstable tree permanently and for all packages. These are two very different concepts. Ok, that is a nice tip to save typing, but it does not help me install Evolution 1.3.1 to test it out. Has anyone tried it? Don -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

Since I last fought sound, I have upgraded my motherboard so I am using Alsa and snd-intel8x0 (Intel 82801BA/BAM /proc/pci says). Here is how I got it going for those that may have problems: 1. Recompiled the kernel with no sound support. 2. Followed the instructions in the ALSA guide to the letter - with one exception: It says to add sound card support as a module and no other drivers, I added support for Intel ICH as a module as well. Would not work without it. 3. Followed the rest of the steps to get Alsa going outside KDE. One exception: In alsamixer, the command in code listing 3.5 'alsamixer set Master 100 unmute' and 'alsamixer set PCM 100 unmute' does not actually do either, you have to us the up arrow to increase the sound AND press 'm' to unmute. Amixer is the same (is amixer a link to alsamixer?) 4. In KDE I had to set arts to not start when KDE does. Aside from the above I followed the instructions to the letter. I do not feel so stupid now, I got so frustrated trying to make it work last time. I just wanted to pass this on in case it helps someone else.

What I want to know is are there any "safe" flags that I should add to increase overall system performance? Right now I use none (other than march=pentium4) and have optimisations at -O3 (or 03). I have not had too many problems with compiling in the past one the PIII. Suggestions? Thanks, Don

I'll add my two cents :) I have not used an Intel chipset MB since an early pentium (HX chipset I think). Never had a problem with VIA on any OS (Win 9.x, 2000, XP, Corel, RH, Mandrake, Gentoo). Now that I said that, I just picked up a great deal on a i845 chipset MB last night. Once I get a P4 power supply (I did not know they were not ATX, but ATX12V) I will see how it runs under Gentoo. My only concern is the manual does not say exactly what sound chipset it is, but it is "AC97" compliant so I should be fine. I will be running this with the cheapest chip I could find, Celeron 1.7 at 400Mhz bus (a P4 Celeron). -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
