Its most likely an issue w/ your mail server. one way to try to fix it, is
to delete all mail that is still stored on the server, even after you have

Ah ah! Looks like the old libarts problem. For some reason the lib isn't
found anymore after an upgrade to KDE 3.1. Here's what I did to get it
to work:

ln -s /usr/kde/3.1/lib/libartsc.so /usr/lib/libartsc.so

Then be sure to call 'ldconfig', just to make sure, and retry to compile

That is what I thought, I also have aRts installed. I even re-emerged

 Check Settings/Configure Shortcuts in KWord (and all other KDE programs).
I'm not sure if the ones you mention are in there, but at least in KWord the
list of configurable keybindings is very, very long.

Mine works here:

# Identifier and driver

   Option "Device"  "/dev/input/mice"
   Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBDEV=y
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=y
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_X=1024
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_Y=768

# Usb
CONFIG_USB=y

custom kernel and the others just give you a kernel compiled the way they
want, or is there more to it than that?

Most other distros you do not compile from source. The extra time it
takes to compile is a trade off for the increase in performance.
Compiling the kernel is a relatively quick job compared to many other

First of all, evolution 1.3.1 is actually beta which may not be evident

from the filename and if you do 'grep evolution

/usr/portage/profiles/packages.mask it warns about possible breakage.
It installs in a separate slot to 1.2.1 so can coexist with 1.2.1 though
AFAIK which makes it a little safer to try. As for installing it try
the following as root.

emerge /usr/portage/net-mail/evolution/evolution-1.3.1.ebuild

Also if you add the following line to the end of your /etc/profile it
will save you having to type in ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86" all the time.
export AK="env ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86"

Then, whenever you wish to install a masked package you can just do:

$AK emerge

Yes, it is a beta, a beta I want to try out.

I tried that command as root before I posted. Does not work.

I do not want to put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in my profile, that will
ALWAYS merge unstable/masked packages, which IMHO, is stupid if you
want to maintain a stable system.

No. You misunderstood me. I am saying that exporting the environment
variable to something shorter makes it easier to type. So instead of
typing
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge

one can simply export this environment to a smaller variable e.g. $AK

export AK="env ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86"

and then one can type simply

$AK emerge packagename (shorter to type)

which is much easier to type.

What you are talking about is to put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 in
/etc/make.conf which asks portage to use the unstable tree permanently
and for all packages. These are two very different concepts.

Ok, that is a nice tip to save typing, but it does not help me install
Evolution 1.3.1 to test it out. Has anyone tried it?

Just remove the symbolic link to stop it crashing and load phoenix when you

I have java working in Mozilla now. Here is what I did:

1. Unmerged any and all versions of java (jdk, jre, etc.)

2. Deleted the directories in /opt and the plugins in
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

(note: most from here to #8 is from another post)

3. Unmerge Openmotif and Lesstif if you have them installed

4. Emerge Mozilla

At this point Moz wants to install the Blackdown-jre 1.3.1. I used
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge mozilla to get Blackdown-jre 1.4.1, which
actually installs first.

5. Type 'java-config --list-available-vms' (look for Blackdown 1.4.1)

6. Type 'java-config --set-system-vm=blackdown-jre-1.4.1'

7. Reinstall Openmotif or Lesstif if you had them installed.

8. Type 'env-update'

Now this works for Mozilla, but at the moment Opera does not work and neither does Phoenix. I may have to install another version for Opera to work and Phoenix I am not sure but I will keep looking. Yes, I mean jre when I typed it. Blackdown-jre seemed to be a binary install.

[gentoo-user] Alsa, sound all problems solved!

2003-02-15 Thread Don Smith
Title: Alsa, sound all problems solved!

Some may remember my problems here getting sound to work.  Right now I am listening to mp3s in XMMS using ALSA as a regular user.  Since I last fought sound, I have upgraded my motherboard so I am using Alsa and snd-intel8x0 (Intel 82801BA/BAM /proc/pci says).

Here is how I got it going for those that may have problems:

1. Recompiled the kernel with no sound support.

2. Followed the instructions in the ALSA guide to the letter - with one exception:

It says to add sound card support as a module and no other drivers, I added support for Intel ICH as a module as well.  Would not work without it.

3. Followed the rest of the steps to get Alsa going outside KDE.  One exception:

In alsamixer, the command in code listing 3.5 'alsamixer set Master 100 unmute' and 'alsamixer set PCM 100 unmute' does not actually do either, you have to us the up arrow to increase the sound AND press 'm' to unmute.  Amixer is the same (is amixer a link to alsamixer?)

4. In KDE I had to set arts to not start when KDE does.

Aside from the above I followed the instructions to the letter.  I do not feel so stupid now, I got so frustrated trying to make it work last time.  I just wanted to pass this on in case it helps someone else.

Not spam, that is what I was looking for (things like -pipe and -g).

Thanks!

[gentoo-user] PIII to P4, optimisations for a full system rebuild.

2003-02-10 Thread Don Smith

  I have just
  upgraded my PC from a PIII to a P4.  I know I can use
  emerge -e system and emerge -e world  to rebuild the
  system with the new settings from make.conf.  I have done
  the kernel already.

  What I want to know is are there any "safe"
  flags that I should add to increase overall system
  performance?  Right now I use none (other than
  march=pentium4) and have optimisations at -O3 (or 03).  I
  have not had too many problems with compiling in the past one
  the PIII.

  Suggestions?

  Thanks,
  Don

[gentoo-user] Rebuild After upgrade PIII to P4

2003-02-08 Thread Don Smith
I have seen the question asked, but there has not really been an answer.
How does one rebuild the whole system?

I have done my kernel. I have changed the CFLAGS in make.conf to
-march=pentium4 (not verbatim listing). Odd thing, I am upgrading Mozilla
and it is still using march=pentium3. Where is it getting that from?
Override from the ebuild?

Don

I'll add my two cents :) I have not used an Intel chipset MB since an early
pentium (HX chipset I think). Never had a problem with VIA on any OS (Win
9.x, 2000, XP, Corel, RH, Mandrake, Gentoo).

Now that I said that, I just picked up a great deal on a i845 chipset MB
last night. Once I get a P4 power supply (I did not know they were not ATX,
but ATX12V) I will see how it runs under Gentoo. My only concern is the
manual does not say exactly what sound chipset it is, but it is "AC97"
compliant so I should be fine. I will be running this with the cheapest
chip I could find, Celeron 1.7 at 400Mhz bus (a P4 Celeron).

After several replies this guy
realizes how stupid he sounds?  The sad reality: not likely.
