You can get build dependencies:
apt-get build-dep x

Not quite the same scenario :-), but good luck.

install vim without gpm support included, and there are more.

Maybe I should expanded a bit, this is what you get for writing in a hurry:

Don't get me wrong, I use both, Gentoo and Debian, on various machines.

pentium-builder can already do this, no need for new development, and with
combination of apt-get source it is quite easy.

I just don't understand the need for that new project, it can already be done
without a problem, for those who want it. This was no attepmt to slam debian
or praise gentoo. Pooling developer resources for this seems a waste
specially when both Gento and Debian need man power in other projects (like
DDTP or debian installer).

[gentoo-user] dev-db/firebird-1.0.3 - Please test

2003-08-21 Thread Meir Kriheli
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

dev-db/firebird is going to to marked as stable soon. I've sent a message
asking to test it several weeks ago, got almost no replies.

Here's the message again, please test and report success/failure:

Please help testing the new ebuild for dev/db-firebird. It's currently marked
as ~x86, so make sure to have it in ACCEPT_KEYWORDS.

This ebuild should close bugs #15071 and #16237. It features the following
changes:

- - Kills lingering gds_lock_mgr processes left after emerging (#15071)
- - latest stable firebird release - 1.0.3.972 (#16237)
- - firebird placed under /etc/xinet.d (disabled by default)
- - 70firebird placed under env.d to add PATH, ROOT_PATH and CONFIG_PROTECT
- - config function to add gds_db to /etc/services
- - isc4.gdb and isc_config moved to /etc/firebird and symlinks to them under
/opt/interbase added. This will prevent fututre emerges from overwriting the
passwords db (which is the current situation).

Right now it is just for the classic (i.e: inet) server. The super (i.e.:
standalone daemon) will be added hopefully soon.

Please backup your current isc4.gdb if you have any and move it to
/opt/firebird after emerge.

Cheers

Why don't write an ebuild and place it in your local PORTDIR_OVERLAY, and let
portage manage and track the installation ?

Writing an ebuild is quite easy (if you can handle bash scripts your already
know how).

Take a look at the simple ones in portage, and read the documentation:

I think pgaccess needs tcl/tk support to build. Make sure you have tcltk in
your USE flags.

try:
emerge -pv postgresql

to see which flags are used

You don't need kde's keyboard layout switcher applet anymore, you can remove
it (this is what I've done).

The applet doesn't switch layouts actually. It loads the entire layout each
time you switch, not very efficient and sometimes the delay is visible until
the layout actually switches (specially when the CPU is loaded).

You'll notice that when you switch with alt+shift the layout is changed
quickly, as it doesn't load it, just changes to the already loaded one.

And it works across all WM's/DE's :-)

XFree 4.3.0 Changed keyboard layout handling, Now you need to specify both
layouts, this is what I have in my XF86Config regarding the keyboard:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard1"
Driver "Keyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us,il"
Option "XkbCompat" "group_led"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
EndSection

Replace the il layout with the one you preffer.

Now you can switch layouts with alt+shift (left alt), and the scroll lock led
will indicate it.

You can also temporary type using the other layout while holding down the
right alt key, without the need to change layouts. When you'll release it,
the layout will go back the the current one.

Hi Jesse,

You don't need to specify each file in the excludes file. I usually do it with
--exclude switch and specify wild cards.

I advise against using -P as it can lead to accidents. If you untar it as root
by accident it'll overwrite your current system (since / is included). Let
tar strip the leading / and untar in the root dir.

-p is not really needed at this stage AFAIK, as it affects extract, not
creation. You might want to revers the order since usually after 'f' is
passed tar is expecting the file name.

Try this for example:
tar -cvjpf /exports/backup-full-090303.tar.bz2 --directory / --exclude=proc
--exclude=exports

You can exclude other dirs as well (tmp/* contents for example).

There are many tutorials on the net about it, Google will surely find some for
you.

The flag is -X (capital X). You should also add -qt to the mix (otherwise php
will build with qt2's xmldom, which in turn requires X).

Do all you guys really need java support with php ? Whole idea of use flags is
to customize the software to your needs. If not, why not set -java in USE
flags (along with X and qt while at it) ?
