It's funny that you mention that. I'm not a newbie to Linux but I was
to gentoo some months back when I did my first update and was told
(nicely, of course! :-))to do an etc-update. Well, I never dreamed
that /etc/fstab would be overwritten. Duh, this was my oversight, of
course, I'm not blaming anyone. But I didn't catch it so when gentoo
wouldn't boot, I thought the system had given up the ghost. I
reinstalled gentoo. I believe I must have had a lot of free time back
then. :-) Had I caught it, I could have simply corrected the
/etc/fstab overwrite and things would have been fine. I didn't go
back to Mandrake, however. :-))). It happened again, but the second
time, I was more careful. I agree with what someone said earlier, is
it really necessary to even offer to change /etc/fstab??

Greetings,
You still need to compile the sound driver into the kernel as a
module. I tried compiling it in but it didn't work. For me, it works
better as a module and then you need to have the driver load at boot
by placing the module name in /etc/modules.autoload: emu10k1. Is
there a shortcut? I really don't know. To my knowledge, there is not.
I have never emerged the sound driver. I have always recompiled the
kernel to my liking and configured the sound from there. I really
don't anything about the Live-CD stuff. Sorry about that. Keep asking
because someone will surely know. If you find another solution I
would very much appreciate knowing what you find out for my own
knowledge. :-) Good luck. Sorry if I haven't been much help.

Greetings!
emu10k1 is a sound driver which must be compiled into the kernel or
compiled as a module. Have you done that? If not, you need to and
then be sure the module is loaded at boot time otherwise you will not
have sound.

An interesting note for me is that when I use :0fw | spamc -f in my
.procmailrc file. When I retrieve mail using getmail, it slows getmail
down and even will not allow getmail to complete. If I don't use that
recipe, getmail functions as it should. Any ideas?

ST Lim,
Thanks a lot for giving me that info. If I do have the wrong headers,
obviously I didn't or don't know it. But here are the results of qpkg -l
linux-headers | grep irq

/usr/include/asm/irq.h
/usr/include/asm/hardirq.h
/usr/include/asm/softirq.h
/usr/include/asm/hw_irq.h
/usr/include/linux/irq_cpustat.h
/usr/include/linux/irq.h

I think I already mentioned that I am using kernel 2.6.0test5-mm1, if
that helps. I do appreciate the time your are taking to help me with
this. I hate it when something, even minor, goes wrong with the system.
It usually means I have done something a little stupid. :-)) Thanks

St Lim,
I don't have a /usr/include/asm/mach-default/irq_vector.h on my box. I
have /usr/include/ asm but not a mach-default. Am I misunderstanding
this? Is mach-default a directory in which irq_vector.h is? Forgive my
ignorance. I can't symlink what I don't have. Thanks for your reply. Any
more suggestions will be appreciated.

[gentoo-user] alsa-driver

2003-09-23 Thread Michael Rasile
I have been trying to emerge the alsa-driver, but the emerge fails. The
error message is this:

ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.2 failed.
Function src_compile, Line 59, Exitcode 2
Parallel Make Failed.

Just wondering how I can correct this. I followed the alsa-driver howto
on the gentoo site, but I can't get past the emerge stage. I even
recompiled with only sound support as the howto suggested, but it still
gave the same compile error.

Also, /usr/src/linux/include/asm/irq.h:16:25: irq_vectors.h: No such
file or directory.

Just wondering if anyone might point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Greetings!
This is a most unfortunate and sad situation. The gentoo irc channel that I
use, irc.freenode.net, is a very positive atmosphere. Gentoo is difficult
enough to learn without negativity. My personal feeling is: if you can't say
anything positive about the distribution, then choose another one. Gentoo
isn't a perfect distribution, but which one is? It has a high learning
curve, but in my experience with my irc chat group on gentoo, everyone has
gone out of their way to help newbies to gentoo. Most of the users on the
site are not new to linux but to gentoo. I have always been treated as an
equal by the group. Again, I would question the purpose of the site you
describe and ask, where are the sysops, can't they control the negativity.
There is nothing wrong with disagreement, but it should lead to
understanding and maybe improvement in certain areas.
Anyway, those are my humble thoughts on the matter. I would also add: how
many of those people who are talking negatively about Gentoo have actually
tried Gentoo? Maybe they tried and couldn't get it to go. It is not the
easiest install in the world. One really needs to follow the install docs to
the letter. Good luck and I sincerely hope things improve.

Greetings!
There have been some changes in perl modules. I refer you to the gentoo
website and check gwn. But here is what you have to do. First you need to
delete File-Spec. Do this by running emerge unmerge File-Spec. That will
remove the blocked dependencies. Then emerge perl and everything should be
ok. Hope this helps.

Greetings!
Just for the record, I was having the same xargs error message and I
upgraded to baselayout 1.8.6.9 and I still get the message. It's not causing
any serious problems, just annonying to see it. If updating baselayout is
supposed to fix the bug, just wondering why it didnnn't work for me. Any
suggestions as to what else I might do. Thanks for anything.

Re: [gentoo-user] kernel 2.6.0-test1 and NVidia

2003-07-22 Thread Michael Rasile
Greetings!
I had the same problem. You need nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3. The r3 is the
new ebuild which fixes the problem with 2.6 and nvidia. So, if you do
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS-"~x86" emerge nvidia-kernel, it should fix the problem. Hope
this helps.

Greetings!
In the /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions directory there should be a file called fluxbox. If you
edit that you can
insert programs that you want started at boot. For example:

xscreensaver &
gkrellm2 -w $
exec fluxbox

Just be sure that the fluxbox line is the last line in the file.

This is the way I do it. I don't really use .xsession at all. Maybe this won't do what
you want. Just a
thought.

Greetings!
Is the module getting loaded at boot. What does lsmod show. Is the nvidia module
listed in /etc/modules.autoload. I did not use the drivers supplied by Gentoo. Rather,
I downloaded the 1.0.4363 driver from the Nvida web site. It's a .run file and has
just one file. You run that, as root, from a console. Not from X. It will compile the
module to fit your kernel config and then install the module. Check the output of
lsmod, as root, and check to see if the module is /etc/modules.autoload. Then reply to
this and maybe I can help you some more. You might also try: emerge -C to unmerge the
drivers and see if that works and I suggest you dowload the driver from the Nvidia
websit and go that way. I've never had a problem with their driver. Hope this helps a
little.

Well, scanimage -L does not find the scanner. I just don't understand this, the
scanner is there in the kernel. Everything seems to be in place, but it will not find
the device. I did check man sane-usb I'll recheck man sane, but I haven't a clue. Why
is sane-find-scanner finding the scanner device, but xsane won't. Well, thanks for
taking the time to reply. I shall forge on! :-))

Thanks for the tip. When I do scanimage --list-devices it does not find my scanner but
when I do sane-find-scanner it finds the scanner. WTF? Go figure, I haven't a clue. I

[gentoo-user] USB scanner

2003-06-04 Thread Michael Rasile
Greetings!
I was wondering if anyone has successfully set up a Canon Lide30 USB scanner under
gentoo. This has become very frustrating. Everything that I know is set up correctly,
usb in the kernel and all, sane-find-scanner finds the device, but xsane absolutely
will not find the scanner. I even installed the latest version of xsane, but no luck.
When I was using Mandrake 9.1 with the same scanner under xsane, it worked perfectly
and everything was configured. I believe it's an xsane problem, which is frustrating
the hell out of me. I went to the xsane web site and downloaded the plustek driver,
which is supposed to be used with my Canon scanner, but I couldn't get it to work.
I've checked all the docs, but with no luck. If anyone knows anything or can give me
some hints or websites that I've missed, I'll be most grateful. Thanks for anything.

Are you using the driver from Nvidia site? It's one file and needs to be made
executable. After doing this, from a console (can't install this driver while in X)
you simply type ./Name of driver and everything should be taken care of. It will not
find a module in the kernel for this driver and will compile one for you and install
it. The only thing you need to do is place nvidia in your /etc/modules.autoload file
and it should come up at boot. You need to edit your XF86Config file and change the
"nv" driver name to "nvidia" Also add Load "glx" to your "Module" section in
XF86Config. If "dri" is enabled, disable it and things should work. That is all I did
and when I do lsmod, it tells me that nvidia is loaded. The drivers from the Nvidia
web site are the latest. The ones in portage are not. Hope this helps. Any more
questions, please ask. I will try to help as best I can.

I chose to use the driver from the nvidia site because it is the latest driver and it
does install quite easily. There is one file and the install, IMO, is much easier than
the portage and it is not the latest version of the driver. I'll send along my
XF86Config file for you.

Greetings!
I have been using the latest drivers from Nvidia without a problem. I'm new to Gentoo
and was apprehensive about using them, but they install without a hitch. The new
install script works like a charm, even compiling the kernel modules needed at boot.
Remember you have to use the install script from the console, not from X. Then be
sure to make the appropriate changes in your XF86Config file. I used the latest
drivers from the Nvidia site. The install script is much better and you only need to
download one file.
Hope this helps. Good luck. Also be sure to place the modules in your
/etc/modules.autoload file so they are inserted at boot time.

[gentoo-user] CanonScan Lide30

2003-06-02 Thread Michael Rasile
Just wondering if anyone has had success setting up a CanonScan Lide30 scanner under
gentoo. I have tried everything. The modules are being inserted correctly and
sane-find-scanner finds my usb scanner, but xsane will simply not work. I suspect that
the drivers are old. Previously, I was using Mandrake 9.1 and xsane worked without a
problem. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.
