[gentoo-user] Update problem

2004-02-15 Thread Paulo da Silva
Hi,

I have emerged kde 3.2 using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" after unmerged
the previous 3.1.
Now I would like to upgrade (emerge -Up world) but then emerge trys to
revert
to kde 3.1.5. How do I avoid this?

Thanks

[gentoo-user] How to skip hotplugging?

2004-01-30 Thread Paulo da Silva
Hi.

Last 1.4 basic iso image hangs on my laptop Compaq 2500 series,
after issuing the message "starting usb and pci hotplugging ..."
I tried the boot options "acpi nousb dokeymap" but the same thing
happens! Isn't is supposed "nousb" to skip the hotplugging phase?
I went back to the 1.4 rc4 that works pretty fine.

Thanks for any comments/help.

[gentoo-user] hdparm problems

2003-11-29 Thread Paulo da Silva
Hi!

Both on my desktop and my laptop I had a problem with
hdparm. The system seemed to hang when starting hdparm.
Because I didn't know how to debug startup (rc) scripts, I
decided to replace the original /etc/init.d/hdparm with a simple
hdparm script to act only on my disks. On the desktop the problem
went a way and everything works pretty fine.
On the laptop a problem occurs from time to time. I can't tell when
and under which circunstancies that happens but the symptoms are
always the same.
After the message "starting hdparm ..." the computer stops (hangs).
After beeing off for some moments (+-15s), the disk activity led blinks
one time, then it turns on and stays there forever. Only a power off
unlocks the system. After rebooting the file /etc/modules.conf is
always corrupted. "modules-update force" resolve the problem.
Any ideas about what can be causing this?

Thanks

this time I forgot to turnoff my openmosix connection to my

   rc-update add hdparm boot
   rc-update add checkroot boot
but I didn't get the efect I pretend!
Am I doing anything wrong?
Some adtional info
-
The main reason I'm trying this is to avoid the reiserfs messages
claiming dma is not on for the disks during the fsck in checkroot
and checkfs.
I have written a small hdparm just to set the dma and other parametres
I use. The original one causes strange things to happen including,
crashing kde - I posted some ask for help here and on gentoo-dev but
got no answers. So, it is supposed to not need anything to be executed

hdparm program commands work fine!

I tried to launch the script manually. The same thing happens and
the computer remained blocked even crashed my X-kde session.
I tried to debug placing "ewarns" into the script but I only got
1 output - procedure checkconfig just before the first "for".
   for i in `dir /dev/discs`
dir /dev/discs manually executed gives a correct response!
   disc0 disc1 disc2
Perhaps the ewarn outputs are somehow buffered.
Is there a better way to debug the rc scripts?
I can't see any reason for this strange behaviour.

Thanks for any help.

[gentoo-user] Reindexing fonts ...

2003-07-03 Thread Paulo da Silva
How do I reindex the fonts?

Sometimes (after a new kernel?) I see this happening
during the boot process. How do I enforce it?
Thanks.

What do you need to install/configure?

It would be nice but it doesn't work for me :-(

[gentoo-user] Can't get distcc to work!!!

2003-06-27 Thread Paulo da Silva
I have two computers connected and working fine.
Their names FOO and BAR.
Both names are correctly recognized.
I use them to share resources and to launch remote X sessions.
What I have done on both:

emerge ccache
emerge distcc
Changed make.conf
   FEATURES="ccache distcc"
   CCACHE_SIZE="2G"
   MAKEOPTS="-j4"
ccache -M 2G

distcc-config --set-hosts FOO BAR

distcc-config --get-hosts return
   FOO BAR
/etc/init.d/distccd start

emerging any appl, I got
distcc ... failing to distribute ... running locally
ccache works fine!

What more is needed to get this to work?

TIA for any help

[gentoo-user] Error executing tpconfig

2003-06-24 Thread Paulo da Silva
I emerged tpconfig (in the hope to make the right side
of the touchpad to scroll) but I got the following message:
"Timed out waiting to read from device (is pc_keyb.c kernel patch
installed?)"

I am using k 2.4.20 gentoo-sources.

Should I use another kernel?

Re: [gentoo-user] Remote X session

2003-06-23 Thread Paulo da Silva
Thanks for all answers. I found where the problem was.
I did as follows:
   X :1 &
  DISPLAY=":1" xhost +B
This does not keep the authorization for B!
Doing X :1 &
  xterm -display :1
and then typing xhost +B on the xterm works fine.
I don't understand why, however.

[gentoo-user] Urgent help! My accented (deadkeys) chars do not work any more ...

2003-06-01 Thread Paulo da Silva
Hi,

After an emerge -e world, followed by emerge -Dp world caused
my dead keys/accented chars to not work any more for X/kde appls!
On the console they work fine.

I am using the same XF86Config file I used before.

Thanks for any help.
