The issue here is our package management system. Yes you can install it alongside xfree, assuming you installed the libs to /usr/local so they don't overwrite xfree's. This is something we (meaning Gentoo) will not do, because /usr/local is not a place a package management system should put things. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, modifying the ebuilds to use prefixes of /usr/local instead of /usr would solve this, but my versions of the ebuilds will remain fit for inclusion in Portage. okkey, got it. Already was. The "kdrive" on my overlay is a modification of that in portage, reflecting usage of imake and therefore xfree86 sources. http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/x11-base/xserver/ Okkey cool, I will try it next month. Hi, Thanx for your reply. Donnie Berkholz wrote: On Thu, 2003-11-13 at 16:54, spundun wrote: I dont understand. I think kdrive is not related to xfree86.org . You're a little misled here. kdrive started within xfree86. Okkey, understood. Now later in this mail you are going to say that its a snapshot off the recent xserver from fd.o, then how is it in sync with XFree.org? what do you mean by "in sync with"? The other problem I've seen is that we should install all of the libraries xserver requires to /usr/X11R6/, which would overwrite xfree's files. I think [EMAIL PROTECTED] can work with xlib etc components from XFree project. Ask on their irc #xwin to confirm. Apparently you didn't notice when you joined #xwin a couple of days ago that I was in there. heh, yeah I have been on many irc channels lately, mainly wasting mine and ppl's time, hoping to learn something btw. Now that you mention this, I will trust your word more ;) and be on the lokout for you next time I am online :) No. The xfree86 libraries aren't autotooled (they use horrible imake), cannot be built independently, and do not install *.pc files needed for pkg-config. I think what I heard was that you could just place the xserver binary alongside XFree setup and be able to use it. I really just heard it, I dont understand how its supposed to work, so I guess I will take your word for it that its not going to work. (When compiling xserver/xlibs by hand, one typically installs to /usr/local/.) So xserver/kdrive will need to change to an exclusive build, instead of something that can be installed alongside xfree. I dont understand the exact nature of the problem, but it seems trivial! may be I am missing something, The issue is that it should be installed to /usr/X11R6, according to policy. Therefore, freedesktop.org's xlibs/xserver and xfree86 currently cannot be installed at the same time. Thats a worst reason ever! :) I have ebuilds for most of the required things already (all of them as of last time I build xserver, two weeks ago), available on dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/. Distfiles are available in the same place. Are they cvs snapshots? If yes, then what date? kdrive, or [EMAIL PROTECTED]? I'm going to be reworking those ebuilds over the next week or two, so be aware that they may be changing somewhat drastically. I will have to wait till thanks giving anyway, thats when I plan to buy my computer. :) Ohh and btw, if you are reworking them, you might want to change the module name to xserver? They are from freedesktop.org. reference to my first comment. Thanx Spundun

[gentoo-user] swinging gnome-pilot
The package gnome-pilot on my machine is going back and forth between versions 0.1.71 and 2.0.9 everytime I do `emerge -u --deep world `. I think this is because gnome-pilot is not slotted and my evolution 1.2.4 still needs the old gnome-pilot. Is there any way to fix this? When is evolution 1.4 going to be unmasked? Hi I tried to updatge lmule today and it choked in compile. There seems to be conflict between wxWindows definitions and glib-1.2 definitions Heres the errors. [gentoo-user] wierd problem with unicode
Hi, I installed indlinux (not supported by gentoo yet) for indian language support some 3 weeks back, for a week or so it worked great, I was able to type in scripts like hindi and gujarati, but about 2 weeks back suddenly I have started having problems. I can still use the scripts with gedit and gaim but I cannot use it in the file save/open dialog boxes. I had named files in unicode but I canonot see them now in the open file dialog box of gedit. In the save dialog box I cannot type the filename in these indian scripts. I can still see the filenames perfectly fine in nautilus(of the files I had named before this problem started). And I can open them through nautilus also, the contents of the file , I can modify in unicode through gedit file, but only the filenames are causing this problem. I must have reinstalled something to have had this problem. Anybody has anyidea whats wrong? Thanx a lot Spundun -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

[gentoo-user] configuring samba client for printers
Hi, Has anybody done this? What I want to do is to be able to print documents by just hitting the print button on acroread,evolution,phoenix/mozilla and other document viewers. I use gnome (dont think that should matter though) I have samba installed. The printers are on network and are accesible through both windows and sun machines. I assume it suppports smb protocol... I dont know how its managed on suns. There are more than one printers... if I could get the list of all the printers (automaticall) in the drop down box in the print dialog... that would be cool. Anybody know how to go about it... I tried to look in the docs but all the samba conf seems to be for servers (please correct me if I am wrong). On this page http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/SMB-HOWTO-10.html Its saying that I need a /usr/bin/smbprint script which I could not find... so may be that doc is outdated. Any ideas? Re: [gentoo-user] problem at bootup
The error I was getting (because of the gawk problem) was slightly different. It said somethinglike "Looks like you kernel is not configured with DEVFS support... hit enter to continue" And when I hit enter... I would boot in to the login prompt, xserver would not start due to devfs problems (more like rc script and gawk problems) but I would get console login prompt. You should also be getting that. If not then I think you problem might be different(or maybe just a variant of this) If you can boot in then just run emerge /usr/portage/sys-apps/gawk/gawk-3.1.1-r1.ebuild to revert back to the good gawk. With the ever growing package size.. these paths can become cumbersome. I remember gnome having a gnome-config executable which will work something like gcc `gnome-config gnome --cflags` my_gnome_hello_world.c which will add all the cflags including the include paths that are relevent to the gnome package.(see man gnome-config) You should see if something similar to this exists for kde and qt. This is not happening right now... Any idea how to configure that? right now its giving me the error "smb:///" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again. Re: [gentoo-user] I finally have sound!....but now stop themadness.
This is incredible!!! why would you want to go for kde or gnome instead of ms-windows? well the answer is so obvious and soo long that I dont want to go about that. And I will be damned if somebody cant figureout how to install gnome or kde on gnetoo! I mean its SO easy that a perticular kind of geeks will hate it for being so easy!!. And well.. they seldom cause problem Its amazing to me how a lot of users stay loayal to the window manager they once start liking (this is not meant in sarcastic tone). Even after the software itself has stopped being maintained. I think its because they have lost the appetite of learning new things... no matter how easy they are. This is a very bold statement for my small self to make to all you genuises out there using classic wms but this is the most convincing theory I could come up with. Ironically as new software come.. they become more and more easy to learn. These are my rather bold 2 cents. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Gnome 2.2 breaks Evolution 1.2.2?
I had a similar problem but at that time I thought the culprit was libbonoboui. The thing with library is that the problem might propagate to subsequent packages depending on that one. So I did emerge -ep evolution and reemerged packages after libbonoboui. (I think I emerged only libgnomeui,gnome-desktop,control-center,gnome-panel and gnome-pilot) And then emerge evolution again. It SHOULD work. If this doesnt work could you please let me know the identified problem and the resolution? I dont know if this is worth posting on this list... but when I emerged the latest libbonoboui-2.2.0.1 , It broke evolution such that I could not compose any mails. I reemrged evolution and now it works fine. Some API problem I guess... Spundun -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] netpbm library not installed properly.
Hi Today I was trying to emerge dvdrip for the first time and it was choking at the emerge of transcode. It was not able to find the -lnetpbm I have netpbm version 10.11.5 installed. Finally after some debugging I fixed the problem by creating a softlink /usr/lib/libnetpbm.so -> libnetpbm.so.10 . I think the installation should have taken care of this. I dont understand these shared object version prefixes but to me it looks like a broken netpbm (ebuild or source tarball). Hope this helps. Spundun -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] is gcc compiling?
This is definately a gcc bug...(well... I am almost sure :) ) Roger mailed me offline that 3.2.2-r3 is now masked unstable.. try downgrading to 3.2.2-r1 (apparently emerge will ask you to do that if you now rsync and then update).. Also may be try to use a little less aggressive CFLAGS? Hope this helps. [gentoo-user] linux-wlan-ng-0.2.0 ebuild problems
For last 2 versions of linux-wlan-ng.. I have been having problems. 1st problem is the PCMCIA_CS_VERSION... it doesnt get set properly by the command in the ebuild file. In the previous verion when the command was in not double quotes... `/sbin/cardmgr...` it gave me back the string "command" instead of 3.2.3 . So I had to modify the ebuild script by setting it to this version (I could execute the same command on bash) Now on the new 0.2.0 version its putting No in the PCMCIA_CS_VERSION. The above problem I could get around by changing the ebuild script by patching the variable to 3.2.4 (thatst the latest version now). Now the problem seems to be in the check sum or something The following is the erro I am experiencing. Does that make any sense to anybody? Is it just my machine or somebody else is also getting the same error? I dont know why its printing out pcmcia-cs-comand.tar.gz instead of pcmcia-cs-2.3.tar.gz. Hi I had this wireless card(Hawking somemodel) working on the same machine 4 months back under redhat with linux-wlan-ng. So I tried to configure it on the gentoo system. Re: [gentoo-user] emerge --verbose ?
I dont know about now but the message used to say type emerge --help config to get more info. Try emerge --help config and then etc-update. Hope this helps Spundun BTW I have seen that new config files message but I dont understand the 2 errors part. [gentoo-user] strange cool problem with evolution - mozilla !!!!
Hi Gentoo-user this is a very funny problem. Just wondering if anybody else is seeing the same thing I start evolution and then start mozilla. Now when mozilla has focus, if I do alt-tab to go to evolution, the evolution window will blink forward for a fraction of a second and then it will again hide behind mozilla, but mozilla will not get its focus back. If I look at the task list in gnome panel at that moment, it will show focus on evolution still but the window will be hidden behind that of mozilla. I dont get this problem with phoenix though. My versions of ebuild packages are evolution 1.2.1 mozilla 1.2.1-r5 phoenix-bin 0.5 cheers Spundun -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] how to update all packages
I think this might be a special case though. It might be that the new version was going to be installed in a seperate slot and thats why it was not really an update to the current version so it didnt showup in the emerge -up --deep world. But it did show up when I did emerge -up gtkmm . Does this make sense or am I on a wrong track? [gentoo-user] cdrtools, xcdroast, gtoaster dont get along well
Hi I had cdrtools and gtoaster installed on the system and yester day I installed xcdroast. It dragged my cdrtools to another (I think older one 1.11.33) and since then my system is seesawing between the 2 builds. Once I emerge -u --deep world , it goes from 1.11.33 and the next time it goes the other way. It looks like xcdroast has a rather hard (and outdated?) limit on the cdrtools version. mostly annoying inconvenience problem. Spundun -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] suggession for gentoo, ~x86-nosystem
Hi Gentoo-user, First of all thank you for all the good work, I tried both redhat-8 and linux-from-scratch, but gentoo was the thing I was looking for. In last few days there was a discussion on the comparison of whether to use ~x86 or not in the make.conf. It seemed like most people wouldnt want to play with the essential system components too soon.. I feel the same. I was wondering if we could add a keyword like ~x86-nosystem which would allow the ~x86 masked packages from world which are not part of system. Does this sound practical? I cannot think of the problems that could possiby occure due to this. I would appreciate +ve/-ve feedback ideas/happiness/dissappointments about this Thanx Spundun ps: sorry for the bulk of spelling mistakes in my last mail. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] avi-xmms the culprit
Hi gentoo-user Today I stat the day with my mailing lists in a good mood, cause yester I fixed xmms (some days back I had posted some mails regarding that and got some useful help).
