/me reads your original post again,
Okkey now it makes sense.
The issue here is our package management system. Yes you can install it
alongside xfree, assuming you installed the libs to /usr/local so they
don't overwrite xfree's. This is something we (meaning Gentoo) will not
do, because /usr/local is not a place a package management system should
put things. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, modifying the ebuilds
to use prefixes of /usr/local instead of /usr would solve this, but my
versions of the ebuilds will remain fit for inclusion in Portage.

okkey, got it.

Already was. The "kdrive" on my overlay is a modification of that in
portage, reflecting usage of imake and therefore xfree86 sources.
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/x11-base/xserver/

Okkey cool, I will try it next month.

I dont understand. I think kdrive is not related to xfree86.org .

You're a little misled here. kdrive started within xfree86.

Okkey, understood. Now later in this mail you are going to say that its
a snapshot off the recent xserver from fd.o, then how is it in sync
with XFree.org? what do you mean by "in sync with"?

The other problem I've seen is that we should install all of the
libraries xserver requires to /usr/X11R6/, which would overwrite xfree's
files.

I think [EMAIL PROTECTED] can work with xlib etc components from XFree
project. Ask on their irc #xwin to confirm.

Apparently you didn't notice when you joined #xwin a couple of days ago
that I was in there.

heh, yeah I have been on many irc channels lately, mainly wasting mine
and ppl's time, hoping to learn something btw. Now that you mention
this, I will trust your word more ;) and be on the lokout for you next
time I am online :)

No. The xfree86 libraries aren't autotooled (they use horrible imake),
cannot be built independently, and do not install *.pc files needed for
pkg-config.

I think what I heard was that you could just place the xserver binary
alongside XFree setup and be able to use it. I really just heard it, I
dont understand how its supposed to work, so I guess I will take your
word for it that its not going to work.

(When compiling xserver/xlibs by hand, one typically installs to
/usr/local/.) So xserver/kdrive will need to change to an exclusive
build, instead of something that can be installed alongside xfree.

I dont understand the exact nature of the problem, but it seems trivial!
may be I am missing something,

The issue is that it should be installed to /usr/X11R6, according to
policy. Therefore, freedesktop.org's xlibs/xserver and xfree86 currently
cannot be installed at the same time.

Thats a worst reason ever! :)

I have ebuilds for most of the required things already (all of them as
of last time I build xserver, two weeks ago), available on
dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/. Distfiles are available in the same
place.

Are they cvs snapshots? If yes, then what date? kdrive, or [EMAIL PROTECTED]?

I'm going to be reworking those ebuilds over the next week or two, so be
aware that they may be changing somewhat drastically.

I will have to wait till thanks giving anyway, thats when I plan to buy
my computer. :)
Ohh and btw, if you are reworking them, you might want to change the
module name to xserver?

They are from freedesktop.org.

reference to my first comment.

I am getting the same error.
What I dont understand is why the db package appears as masked.
THe only relevent entry I see in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask is:
# <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 29 May 2003
# ebuild was previously masked only in the ebuild
# This is the correct place for it.
=sys-libs/db-3.3.11

But this is not relevent because I am trying to install db-4.1.
when I do `emerge search db`
I get one of the entries as
*  sys-libs/db
  Latest version available: 3.2.9-r6
  Latest version installed: 3.2.9-r6
Size of downloaded files: 2,036 kB
  Homepage:http://www.sleepycat.com/
Description: Berkeley DB for transaction support in MySQL

but if I do ls /usr/portge/sys-libs/db, I get:
ChangeLogdb-3.2.9-r1.ebuild db-3.2.9.ebuild
db-4.1.25_p1.ebuild
Manifest db-3.2.9-r2.ebuild db-3.3.11.ebuild files
db-1.85-r1.ebuilddb-3.2.9-r5.ebuild db-4.0.14.ebuild metadata.xml
db-3.2.3h-r4.ebuild db-3.2.9-r6.ebuild db-4.1.25.ebuild

so there are 4.1.25 and 4.1.25_p1 ebuilds which match this.
both have KEYWORDS="amd64" and SLOT="4.1".
I tried some tweakings but I dont understand why this ebuilds are masked
out of updates.

Is there anyway to debug(trace) the masking?

[gentoo-user] swinging gnome-pilot

2003-06-16 Thread Spundun Bhatt
The package gnome-pilot on my machine is going back and forth between
versions 0.1.71 and 2.0.9 everytime I do `emerge -u --deep world `.
I think this is because gnome-pilot is not slotted and my evolution
1.2.4 still needs the old gnome-pilot.
Is there any way to fix this?

When is evolution 1.4 going to be unmasked?

THanx a lot

[gentoo-user] new kernel

2003-06-13 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Okkey, so theres new version of kernel available (atleast with ~x86
keyword).

If I update that package... do I need to rebuild the kernel or can I
just ignore this update?
If I have to build this kernel, can I copy my .config file from the
earlier version or I need to reconfigure?

[gentoo-user] preventing strip in gaim

2003-06-12 Thread Spundun Bhatt
I am trying to debug a crash in gaim (which happens everytime I try to
join an irc chat).

I am not able to prevent to strip of symbols in the ebuild.

I tried

DEBUGBUILD="yes" ebuild /usr/portage/net-im/gaim/gaim-0.63-r1.ebuild
install
DEBUGBUILD="true" ebuild /usr/portage/net-im/gaim/gaim-0.63-r1.ebuild
install
and
DEBUGBUILD="true" emerge gaim

but none of these preserve the symboltables in the binaries.Whe I open
gaim in ddd, I see the message "(no debugging symbols found)...(gdb)"

Anyidea how to get around this?

ps. BTW my previous question about ebuild tree broken, I fixed it by
remving xpm dependency from xscreensaver and gnucash ebuilds.

[gentoo-user] ebuild tree seems broken

2003-06-12 Thread Spundun Bhatt
pertage ebuild tree seems to have gotten into some sort of intermediate
stage... hopefully doing an emerge sync after a while should fix this.

 root # emerge -u --deep world -p

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies -
emerge: there are no masked or unmasked ebuilds to satisfy
">=media-libs/xpm-3.4".

!!! Problem with ebuild x11-misc/xscreensaver-4.10
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.

[gentoo-user] lmule - is it just me? or....

2003-06-10 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi
I tried to updatge lmule today and it choked in compile.

There seems to be conflict between wxWindows definitions and glib-1.2
definitions

Heres the errors. Make I think was trying to compile parallally so the
errors are not very synchronous.

I am wondering why nobody else is getting this same error.

[gentoo-user] wierd problem with unicode

2003-06-06 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi,
I installed indlinux (not supported by gentoo yet) for indian language
support some 3 weeks back, for a week or so it worked great, I was able
to type in scripts like hindi and gujarati, but about 2 weeks back
suddenly I have started having problems. I can still use the scripts
with gedit and gaim but I cannot use it in the file save/open dialog
boxes. I had named files in unicode but I canonot see them now in the
open file dialog box of gedit. In the save dialog box I cannot type the
filename in these indian scripts. I can still see the filenames
perfectly fine in nautilus(of the files I had named before this problem
started). And I can open them through nautilus also, the contents of the
file , I can modify in unicode through gedit file, but only the
filenames are causing this problem. I must have reinstalled something to
have had this problem.
Anybody has anyidea whats wrong?
Thanx a lot

[gentoo-user] configuring samba client for printers

2003-03-27 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi,
Has anybody done this?

What I want to do is to be able to print documents by just hitting the
print button on acroread,evolution,phoenix/mozilla and other document
viewers. I use gnome (dont think that should matter though)
I have samba installed.

The printers are on network and are accesible through both windows and
sun machines. I assume it suppports smb protocol... I dont know how its
managed on suns.

There are more than one printers... if I could get the list of all the
printers (automaticall) in the drop down box in the print dialog...
that would be cool.

Anybody know how to go about it... I tried to look in the docs but all
the samba conf seems to be for servers (please correct me if I am
wrong). On this page http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/SMB-HOWTO-10.html
Its saying that I need a /usr/bin/smbprint script which I could not
find... so may be that doc is outdated.

Any ideas?
Thanx a lot

For those of you running the 4.2.99.4 xfree86 and have dislike for the
transparent white cursor, cd over to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default
and change the index.theme contests to replace whiteglass to default (or
redglass if you're adventurous.)

I guess you want to expand the tar.gz for the cursor next to this
default directory, i.e. in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons and then change the
default/index.theme file.
Hope this helps..

Re: [gentoo-user] problem at bootup

2003-03-25 Thread Spundun Bhatt
The error I was getting (because of the gawk problem) was slightly
different.
It said somethinglike "Looks like you kernel is not configured with
DEVFS support... hit enter to continue"
And when I hit enter... I would boot in to the login prompt, xserver
would not start due to devfs problems (more like rc script and gawk
problems) but I would get console login prompt. You should also be
getting that.
If not then I think you problem might be different(or maybe just a
variant of this)
If you can boot in then just run
emerge /usr/portage/sys-apps/gawk/gawk-3.1.1-r1.ebuild
to revert back to the good gawk.
Hope this helps.

I missed that part but I didnt know about this file utility and other
stuff atall. Anyway... i dont have the so.6 symlink but I do have
the other files, I wonder where that symlink came from.

So ld config will restore good paths of /usr/lib/libc.so ? so Steven
wont have to reemerge?

Okey heres something really simple have you tried re-emerging
mplayer?
prompt# emerge mplayer
May be you have already tried this, but if not... try this first
(assuming that you can emerge most of the stuff excpet for some stuff
like quanta). This might just work
Hope this helps

With a messed up libc I am surprised at even the fact that you can run
the shell... I reccommend not rebooting the machine until you have got
this straghtend out.
All the best..

sorry I dont know how to fix this thing try qpkg -l glibc to see
what files the libc installed maybe you need to reemerge glibc.
The fact that you can run any command (even ls) says that the library is
not completely skrewed up so may be theres no need to panic.

I cant find libminimagick in my /usr... nor can I find any such package.
[goes and executes the tcprobe command]
I get the error
 root # tcprobe -i /dev/dvd
tcprobe: error while loading shared libraries: libMagick-5.5.4-Q16.so.0:

open shared object file: No such file or directory
[Looks for file libMagick*]
There are bunch of those in /usr/lib libMagick-5.5.5*, and
libMagick++-5.5.5*
[queries for this lib file]
They belong to package media-gfx/imagemagick
[queries for /usr/bin/tcprobe]
tcprobe belongs to the media-video/transcode package.
[checks transcode's dependency]
Its indeed dependent on imagemagick.
At this point it would be help ful if I could find the time when I
installed transcode and image magic. But changelog provide a rough
estimate as 16th and 18th march respectively.
Trying re-emerge transcode. (Note tcprobe was looking for
libMagick-5.5.4 and I have verson 5.5.5 hence the re-emerge)
trying tcprobe again
It worked!!! gave bunch of amazing info out og my dvd!!
dvdrip now works when run as root (cant mount the device as a user)
Thanx a lot for you help
Spundun
This sort of problems keep occuring. I think the reason is that many
times when a library is updated the application package depending on
it also needs update. Ususally I think people handle that by throwing a
newer version with the same source for the application, which will make
the emerge -u --deep world, rebuild the package. I feel its not very
clean. Another very complicated solution is to come up with the way of
specifying reverse dependencies and api breakage in which case portage
will go to the dependent package and rebuild that

Re: [gentoo-user] gcc question

2003-03-16 Thread Spundun Bhatt
With the ever growing package size.. these paths can become cumbersome.
I remember gnome having a gnome-config executable which will work
something like
gcc `gnome-config gnome --cflags` my_gnome_hello_world.c
which will add all the cflags including the include paths that are
relevent to the gnome package.(see man gnome-config)
You should see if something similar to this exists for kde and qt.
Hope this doesnt confuse you :)

Or alternatively kde and gnome are the most used software? esp. by the
less knowing class to which I belong myself? if the demand for toyota's
part increases that doesnt necessarily mean that they are making worse
machines.. may be their machines are simply more popular! I agree that I
have seen a lot of questions reported regarding these sw.. but not all

thats the one I was talking about. Its seems to be working for you also
from what I read in the bug report. r7's gtk2 layout is pretty cool

Re: [gentoo-user] I finally have sound!....but now stop themadness.

2003-03-15 Thread Spundun Bhatt
This is incredible!!!
why would you want to go for kde or gnome instead of ms-windows? well
the answer is so obvious and soo long that I dont want to go about that.
And I will be damned if somebody cant figureout how to install gnome or
kde on gnetoo! I mean its SO easy that a perticular kind of geeks
will hate it for being so easy!!. And well.. they seldom cause problem

Its amazing to me how a lot of users stay loayal to the window manager
they once start liking (this is not meant in sarcastic tone). Even after
the software itself has stopped being maintained.
I think its because they have lost the appetite of learning new
things... no matter how easy they are. This is a very bold statement for
my small self to make to all you genuises out there using classic wms
but this is the most convincing theory I could come up with. Ironically
as new software come.. they become more and more easy to learn.

These are my rather bold 2 cents.
And finally
(arn't rants annoying, why do we always read them, i mean really, why do
i care what makes a geek happy, who is passably on the other side of the
planet!cause I am a geek myself!! ;) )

Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Gnome 2.2 breaks Evolution 1.2.2?

2003-03-12 Thread Spundun Bhatt
I had a similar problem but at that time I thought the culprit was
libbonoboui.
The thing with library is that the problem might propagate to subsequent
packages depending on that one.
So I did
emerge -ep evolution
and reemerged packages after libbonoboui. (I think I emerged only
libgnomeui,gnome-desktop,control-center,gnome-panel and gnome-pilot)
And then emerge evolution again.
It SHOULD work.
If this doesnt work could you please let me know the identified
problem and the resolution?
Thanx
Hope this helps

[gentoo-user] libbonoboui broke evolution.

2003-03-06 Thread Spundun Bhatt
I dont know if this is worth posting on this list... but when I emerged
the latest libbonoboui-2.2.0.1 , It broke evolution such that I could
not compose any mails. I reemrged evolution and now it works fine. Some
API problem I guess...

[gentoo-user] netpbm library not installed properly.

2003-03-05 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi
Today I was trying to emerge dvdrip for the first time and it was
choking at the emerge of transcode.
It was not able to find the -lnetpbm
I have netpbm version 10.11.5 installed.
Finally after some debugging I fixed the problem by creating a softlink
/usr/lib/libnetpbm.so -> libnetpbm.so.10 .
I think the installation should have taken care of this. I dont
understand these shared object version prefixes but to me it looks like
a broken netpbm (ebuild or source tarball).
Hope this helps.

Re: [gentoo-user] is gcc compiling?

2003-03-05 Thread Spundun Bhatt
This is definately a gcc bug...(well... I am almost sure :) ) Roger
mailed me offline that 3.2.2-r3 is now masked unstable.. try downgrading
to 3.2.2-r1 (apparently emerge will ask you to do that if you now rsync
and then update).. Also may be try to use a little less aggressive
CFLAGS?
Hope this helps.

I am running blackdownjdk-1.4.1 The reason why I think this should
not matter is that I this gcc is sucha basic package in the nix world
that I cant imagine it having a dependency on jdks. My theory is
reinforced by the fact that grep jdk on the gcc ebuild script returns no
results.

[gentoo-user] linux-wlan-ng-0.2.0 ebuild problems

2003-03-05 Thread Spundun Bhatt
For last 2 versions of linux-wlan-ng.. I have been having problems.
1st problem is the PCMCIA_CS_VERSION... it doesnt get set properly by
the command in the ebuild file. In the previous verion when the command
was in not double quotes... `/sbin/cardmgr...` it gave me back the
string "command" instead of 3.2.3 . So I had to modify the ebuild script
by setting it to this version (I could execute the same command on bash)
Now on the new 0.2.0 version its putting No in the PCMCIA_CS_VERSION.

The above problem I could get around by changing the ebuild script by
patching the variable to 3.2.4 (thatst the latest version now).
Now the problem seems to be in the check sum or something The
following is the erro I am experiencing.
Does that make any sense to anybody? Is it just my machine or somebody
else is also getting the same error?
Thanx a lot

I tried emerging it right now though I havent tried rebooting the
machine :) ... right now colordiff is not coloring context diffs. It
colors standard diffs but at the end it leaves the color it last used to
color the text... so after a test diff, I got evrything else that came
next on the shell(e.g. ls out put) in green. Using gnome terminal.

I havent installed any perticular screensaver separately I think
these are the default bunch of screensaver that come with xscreensver.
They run in random order. They are just so many in muber that its
impossible to name then from the pattern... or even look for it in the
list. the only way to find a cool screen saver is to stop when its
running and directly go to the xscreensaver config dialog box where the
last screensaver gets highlighted.

I know what you mean :) But just for the sake of fairness I have had to
reboot my gentoo box because of hangs. It has happened 3-4 times
randomly in last 3 months that after sitting idle for sometime it
hangs... I see a frozen Xscreensaver and tapping the mouspad (its a
laptop) doesnt get it off... ctrl+alt+f1 doesnt work
(ctrl+at+(+)/(-) has never worked for me somehow) and the only option I
got is reboot.
I know this may not be linux crash... may be Xfree crash but then again
when we say windows crash.. what component do we mean?
Still this is not similar to BSOD so for that... errwhat about
kernel panic!

I am not sure what error are you referring to here. But I never had such
problem. in my command emerge --deep -u world... it updated portage
first and then updated cdrtools and acoupl of other software without any
src_compile error. When was the last time you ran the command
`etc-update` ?
BTW I am using ~x86 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS (this doesnt mean you also
should... ).
Hope this helps

Hey sorry... the first time I did not understand properly what you
said This is very strange!!! I dont know why its printing out
pcmcia-cs-comand.tar.gz instead of pcmcia-cs-2.3.tar.gz.
I executed this commands on my root shell and I got the following
result.

mermaid root # cardmgr -V 2>&1 | cut -f3 -d' '
3.2.3
mermaid root # PCMCIA_VERSION="`cardmgr -V 2>&1 | cut -f3 -d' '`"
mermaid root # echo $PCMCIA_VERSION
3.2.3
mermaid root # PCMCIA_CS="pcmcia-cs-${PCMCIA_VERSION}"
mermaid root # echo $PCMCIA_CS
pcmcia-cs-3.2.3
mermaid root #

so why is it printing pcmcia-cs-command? Any portage experts?
BTW I am using keyword ~x86 if that makes any difference.
meanwhile... I am thinking about patching the ebuild script as Joe
suggested.
Thanx a lot

Thanx a lot for the hint Joe,
I have a cardmgr and i spits out version 3.2.3
I emerged that just a couple of day back, I remember clearly also
that same day this linux-wlan-ng was the next package in my update list
and it failed and its been failing since then...
Should I downgrade to 3.2.1? Is there a problem with the mirrors?
Anyone any idea?

The problem has something to do with the way I setup encryption.

[gentoo-user] configuring wlan

2003-02-19 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi
I had this wireless card(Hawking somemodel) working on the same machine
4 months back under redhat with linux-wlan-ng. So I tried to configure
it on the gentoo system.
I think I have got most of the pieces togather... only some small
(mostly gentoo specific) detail that I am missing.

Here is the activity on the /var/log/everything/current as I insert the
card in pcmcia slot.

Also as I was typing this mail I saw some activity on the

Re: [gentoo-user] emerge --verbose ?

2003-02-10 Thread Spundun Bhatt
I dont know about now but the message used to say type emerge --help
config to get more info. Try emerge --help config and then etc-update.
Hope this helps
Spundun
BTW I have seen that new config files message but I dont understand the
2 errors part. I think after doing etc-update, you should probably run
whatever emerge command gave this message again.

[gentoo-user] strange cool problem with evolution - mozilla !!!!

2003-02-06 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi Gentoo-user
this is a very funny problem. Just wondering if anybody else is seeing
the same thing

I start evolution and then start mozilla. Now when mozilla has focus, if
I do alt-tab to go to evolution, the evolution window will blink forward
for a fraction of a second and then it will again hide behind mozilla,
but mozilla will not get its focus back. If I look at the task list in
gnome panel at that moment, it will show focus on evolution still but
the window will be hidden behind that of mozilla.
I dont get this problem with phoenix though.
My versions of ebuild packages are
evolution 1.2.1
mozilla 1.2.1-r5
phoenix-bin 0.5

cheers

Re: [gentoo-user] how to update all packages

2003-02-05 Thread Spundun Bhatt
I think this might be a special case though. It might be that the new
version was going to be installed in a seperate slot and thats why it
was not really an update to the current version so it didnt showup in
the emerge -up --deep world. But it did show up when I did emerge -up
gtkmm .
Does this make sense or am I on a wrong track?

[gentoo-user] cdrtools, xcdroast, gtoaster dont get along well

2003-01-31 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi
I had cdrtools and gtoaster installed on the system and yester day I
installed xcdroast. It dragged my cdrtools to another (I think older one
1.11.33) and since then my system is seesawing between the 2 builds.
Once I emerge -u --deep world , it goes from 1.11.33 and the next time
it goes the other way. It looks like xcdroast has a rather hard (and
outdated?) limit on the cdrtools version.
mostly annoying inconvenience problem.

[gentoo-user] suggession for gentoo, ~x86-nosystem

2003-01-31 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi Gentoo-user,
First of all thank you for all the good work, I tried both redhat-8 and
linux-from-scratch, but gentoo was the thing I was looking for.

In last few days there was a discussion on the comparison of whether to
use ~x86 or not in the make.conf.

It seemed like most people wouldnt want to play with the essential
system components too soon.. I feel the same. I was wondering if we
could add a keyword like ~x86-nosystem which would allow the ~x86 masked
packages from world which are not part of system.

Does this sound practical? I cannot think of the problems that could
possiby occure due to this.
I would appreciate +ve/-ve feedback ideas/happiness/dissappointments
about this
Thanx
Spundun
ps: sorry for the bulk of spelling mistakes in my last mail.

[gentoo-user] avi-xmms the culprit

2003-01-31 Thread Spundun Bhatt
Hi gentoo-user
Today I stat the day with my mailing lists in a good mood, cause yester
I fixed xmms (some days back I had posted some mails regarding that and
got some useful help).
Finally I had opened xmms in ddd and found out that one of the threads
in xmms was recieving segfault. It looked like the plugin whose code was
causing this wsa avi-xmms and I unmerged the plugin and xmms opened
like well just like it used to.
So maybe avi-xmms has some issues.
If there are any concerned people out there who want more info, I ll be
happy to provide that.
Thanx a lot
