Unmerge ExtUtils-MakeMaker, and Perl will be happy to upgrade. People have used the time-honoured "ide2=0x180,0x386" boot prompt command to make this work. If that doesn't help, you'll find the alternative installation guide or the floppy boot routine of much value. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=8690 Don't try the 2.6 kernel (or a pre-emptible 2.4.x) if you want your Rockwell modem to work with the Conexant drivers. Everything else will just fall into place as soon as you get your kernel configuration right. I suggest the e100 module for the built-in NIC (don't know if it's on the LiveCD, you can temporarily use the eepro driver instead). When in doubt, *always* ask at the linux-sony mailing list: http://returntonature.com/mailman/listinfo/linux-sony Linux-on-laptops is a good source for links to additional information, but there are so many broken ones on the Sony page that I've more or less given up on it. http://tuxmobil.org/sony.html looks significantly more up to date to me. [gentoo-user] Kernel 2.6 oddities
I'm trying to go with the flow and do some 2.6 testing on my Vaio PCG-R505R/GK, and I'm experiencing a number of things I don't know what to make of. In no particular order: * The console lost the | character, no matter how hard I hammer on that key on my Japanese 106 keyboard. Works fine in X, though. * cardmgr moans about being unable to get dependency info for eth1 (my WLAN card) and suggests running depscan.sh, but this apparently doesn't have any influence on the card - it's running perfectly. * The mouse pointer in X all of a sudden whirls around the screen like it's on amphetamines, MUCH faster than before (pretty much the same behaviour as in W2K on the same machine) * My jogdial (really a wheel in the touchpad) has finally started to ackknowledge it's a middle mouse button! I can now paste highlighted text by pressing on that wheel - but of course sjogdial comes up, too... * KWifimanager crashes with SIGFPE (never had a problem with that in 2.4.20) * Plugging in (and mounting) a USB flash memory stick works fine, unplugging it, even after umounting, well: I've attached the dmesg output... Hope I'm not annoying anyone with this not very systematic approach to debugging... :) Any comments warmly welcome. MIKE MacMartin wrote: > > I was wondering if there was any laptop vendors that officially > > supports > > linux? > > Eurocom. I suppose you're referring to this: http://www.eurocom.com/support/linux/comchart.htm... Err - that's not my idea of official support... All I can see are a few lame installation notes (they even dropped testing with Mandrake, it's now RH 9.0 only) and unsolved problems I suspect would simply go away if they tried hard enough and/or used different components. SuSE has a list of "certified hardware" that includes notebooks from Fujitsu-Siemens, Dell and others, but even those certifications contain a few caveats (mostly unsupported winmodems). Even IBM, no matter how busily deploying Linux on servers, didn't continue their former Linux notebook line. They were putting OpenLinux on ThinkPads at a time, and maybe SCO wouldn't have set their legal chihuahuas on their heels if those A and T models had actually sold well... *grin* So if you can't get official support, all that's left is the assumption that just about every piece of hardware out there should be supported by the right kernel configuration. The only way to be absolutely certain of a given laptop's compatibility with Linux seems to be buying one with Linux preinstalled. Here's a list of vendors shipping those, from the top of my head (or my bookmark file, more precisely): http://xtops.de http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux-laptop-lc2000.html http://www.aslab.com/products/laptops/laptops.html http://www.emperorlinux.com http://qlilinuxpc.com/products/laptops/index.html http://www.kachinatech,com/US/portare.html And my personal favourite, the yummy Apple PowerBooks with dual-boot Mac OS X and Gentoo preinstalled: http://qlilinuxpc.com/products/apple/index.html Cheers Ulrich Plate pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Re: [gentoo-user] Linux as a print server for macs
Netatalk works perfectly fine, I'm running it to print from my Mac OS 9.1 beige desktop G3 since many moons, without so much as a hickup. Netatalk documentation is the worst you'll ever find for any Linux application, but let the thought that it will eventually work well serve as a reassuring hug before you attack the installation. ;) There's a mailing list for Netatalk development that has many useful hints, http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=netatalk-devel has a complete archive of the past two years or so. Two things before you start: You have to enable Appletalk support in your kernel, and you need to convert the PPD driver files for your CUPS printer on the Linux host into a Mac-readable format (basically, replace the EOLs with CR/LF) and install them as Postscript drivers on the Mac. If you need help with the config files, PM me. Knoppix has no better chance to run on that IEEE1394 CD drive than any other Linux boot CD. You'll end up with a floppy based install, and Slackware 8.1 seems to be the flavour of the month. Check this thread in the forums for details: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=27951 (and make sure you read to the end of it, there's a reason why we don't use tomsrtbt anymore). I haven't finished my own installation guide for the R505 yet, sorry, but I can send you my kernel .config and XF86Config files if you want. PM v7 was the first version that could safely modify NTFS partitions, so it's safe to use that (well, I did...), but if you have to upgrade from your version 5 anyway, you might as well go for 8. Don't mention it. :) The typo in the ebuild is mentioned in the bug, too (the solution is different, adding spaces between the brackets and x11-libs/xft seems to work, too). I guess the author hasn't come around to changing it, but the final version in portage will probably take care of this. And it includes PAM, for example, meaning you can authorize access with a smartcard if you feel so inclined. :) I can't help all that much with your problem, but I wanted to point out that there's an ebuild now that apparently "just works", too. It's been admitted to Portage, but as long as that's frozen it's not being handed down, so you'd have to get it from bugs.gentoo.org, right here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15660 Cheers Ulrich Plate -- gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-key CF7D6206 Fingerprint CDD6 3225 3489 1305 D4D6 1CCF 50E8 6505 CF7D 6206 msg01803/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature
