[gentoo-user] rc-update, hotplug and usb printing
i read somewhere that for usb printing cups must be started _after_ the usb printer is hotplugged. in rc-update, the cupsd is set to default and so was hotplug. i noticed that cups would load _before_ the hotplugging of the usb printer. so i changed the hotplug to boot level, but then began receiving many error messages about modules that were loaded and threw errors. how do i get cups to load after i do my usb hotplugging in the default level in rc-update? although greatly simplified in gentoo, it wasn't too bad in red hat linux and unix (hpux, solaris). is there a way that i can replace the rc-update with the old way of doing things? andrew _ Send instant messages to anyone on your contact list with MSN Messenger 6.0. [gentoo-user] usb printer (epson cx5200) mystery
this past weekend i managed to get my epson cx5200 usb printer to print a "test" page and the cups test page from gnome. for a different reason, i had to disconnect and reconnect all of the cables on my machine. after that i have not been able to print the "test" page and cups test page. cups acts as though it has printed the page and throws no errors. i used usbview to make sure my printer was there and it was there. i tried switching the page definitions. one of the other ones manages to print out a bunch of characters on the same line. i'm not sure what happened because i didn't change any hardware or configurations... any ideas on why this would happen? andrew _ Cheer a special someone with a fun Halloween eCard from American Greetings! [gentoo-user] compiling new kernels
when i emerge a new kernel to compile, does the /etc/kernel/default-config get replaced? when i genkernel --config does the /etc/kernel/default-config get overwritten? does genkernel make use of make.conf when compiling kernels? when does the /usr/src/linux/.config get written to? i'm currently using the gentoo gaming-source, because my nforce2 board was having problems with gentoo-source. i just found out that the kernel did not have usb printing enabled, so i'm interested in compiling a different kernel possibly 2.4.22 (any thoughts on this and nforce2 mboard?) i want to preserve my config files for each of the kernels that i compile, just in case i have to go back and recompile it... any suggestions... andrew _ Help protect your PC. [gentoo-user] kernel disintegration SOS
well, i tried to compile modules for ALSA support of my sound card last night. ( http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml ) i followed the instructions and right before the emerge alsa-driver step in the instructions, i thought of an idea that may get my nforce2 integrated sound to work without using alsa. so i changed a configuation file and rebooted my machine. it came up, but without sound and NETWORK. i decided to go ahead with the emerge alsa-driver step. unfortunately, my only copy of the instructions was what i was viewing over the internet... at that point, my wife asked me if she could use the internet. she isn't too keen on linux and i force her to use it. (no ms windows on my computer.) but she does get very agitated when she can not use the computer. i thought that i could save the sound installation for another day. i decided to re-compile my kernel to start fresh. after re-compiling, i restarted my computer and got to lilo. after lilo, it displays something like: loading Gentoo_Gaming . but then freezes. i popped in the gentoo 1.4 cd, emerged gentoo-gaming source, and recompiled. i rebooted and receive the same thing. i noticed when running genkernel a line with "mrproper" is displayed. this line is not included in the output example in the gentoo installation instructions. "make mrproper" is a step in the alsa installation directions. could this be the culprit? i'm not familiar at all with kernel compiling or module compiling. at this point, i just want to get my computer to work again. perhaps there is some residual stuff that was left over from my botched sound card driver installation. computer information: gigabyte nforce2 256 MB ram 30 gig hard drive nvidia GeForce 4400 gentoo-gaming kernel (default) lilo boot i used gentoo-gaming because otherwise my computer would have a kernel panic in the middle of the boot up sequence. the gentoo-gaming default kernel was working on my machine for several weeks before i decided to mess around with the sound. i didn't change any configuration files other than trying to install the sound drivers. thank you in advance for any and all assistance. andrew _ Need more e-mail storage? Re: [gentoo-user] imhangul users / asian language users
after some experimentation, i'm able to input korean characters into gedit, but not mozilla web forms (as used in bulletin boards or web based email). 1) emerge -S korea 2) emerge all unmasked packages that appear on this list. (i installed "ami", but it may not be necessary.) 3) emerge imhangul ; emerge imhangul_status_applet 4) add imhangul_status_applet to your gnome panel. (you may have to log out, log in for it to be visible.) 5) right click on the applet and select "about". write down the url for the website (this may be useful in the future) ; this website has the documentation for imhangul (in korean). 6) open gEdit and right click on area where you input text. in the menu that just opened, there should be an item to select input. select hangul 2bul or something like that. 7) start typing korean. (this may require you to press shift-space. you will notice that the imhangul_status_applet will be populated with "A" or korean characters. that is the mode that you are typing in.) i haven't gotten it to work with mozilla web forms, so if you want to send web based emails in korean, then: 8) copy (ctrl-c) the text that you just typed into gedit. 9) start mozilla, log into web based email. 10) click on the link that composes a new email. 11) change coding for the page to "Korean (UHC)". the page should reload and the english fonts should change in appearance. 12) paste (ctrl-v) and address teh email to yourself. send the email. 13) view the email. if you can't see it in korean, then change coding of the page to "Korean (UHC)". you should be able to view the characters. if not, then check to make sure that the preferences for mozilla (navigator-languages) have the korean language included. interestingly, these instructions work both in the Englsih (American) and Korean locale for gnome. There is a nvaudio ebuild too that you'll probably want at some point On Thursday 25 September 2003 03:37 pm, a park wrote: > ernie, > > did you have to make any bios / boot / kernel adjustments to get > your system to work with the nforce2 chip set? > > andrew > > From: Ernie Schroder <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Kernel panic while booting a new Gentoo > >installation > >Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 14:30:13 -0400 > > > >Just so folks don't think that Peter's problems are due to the > > Nforce 2 chipset., I'll report no such problems with my > > LeadtekK7NCR18D (nforce2) mother board. Re: [gentoo-user] Kernel panic while booting a new Gentoo installation
ernie, did you have to make any bios / boot / kernel adjustments to get your system to work with the nforce2 chip set? andrew From: Ernie Schroder <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Kernel panic while booting a new Gentoo installation Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 14:30:13 -0400 Just so folks don't think that Peter's problems are due to the Nforce 2 chipset., I'll report no such problems with my LeadtekK7NCR18D (nforce2) mother board. DMA is working, USB and USB 2 work perfectly my onboard nic is fine, and the onboard firewire seems to work too. My last problem is getting lm-sensors working. I tend to stay FAR away from VIA chipsets due to AGP problems I experienced with 2 different VIA based boards. Nothing against Peter's judgement, just my personal experience -- Regards, Ernie 100% Microsoft and Intel free _ High-speed Internet access as low as $29.95/month (depending on the local service providers in your area). [gentoo-user] Kernel panic while booting a new Gentoo installation
I received the following message while booting with a kernel that I compiled during the installation of Gentoo 2: hub.c: USB hub found hub.c: 3 ports detected Detected usb-ohci hardware Scanning for hid... usb.c: registered new driver hid hid-core.c: v1.8.1 Andreas Gal, Vojtech Pavlik ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) hid-core.c: USB HID support drivers Detected hid hardware Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! I compiled the 2.4.20 kernel that is retreived from gentoo-sources. I used the genkernel command without the --config option. I emerged the following: nvidia-kernel, nforce-net, nforce-audio because I have the following hardware: Athlon XP 2200+, Gigabyte GA-7NNXP (nforce2), 256 MB RAM, 40 GB IDE Harddrive (i think it is 7200rpm), NVidia GeForce 4400, Logitech USB Mouse, cdrom, two additional IDE hard drives. I've looked around the web for some answers and most seem to focus on ACPI / APIC and disabling it. I don't mind disabling it as long as I don't see any performance degredation (which is kind of difficult to judge since my machine is not performing at all). There seems to be three places to disable it: the BIOS, the kernel and the boot command (pci=noacpi noapic) (could i place this in lilo.conf?). What would be the best way to determine if this is the problem? Which would be the best place to disable it at? Would this solve my problems? Here is one of the sources of information that I found on the net: http://www.burocrata.org/newwiki/NvidiaNforce Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.
