That's exactly my question which hasn't been answered yet. Why all of a
sudden do I need tons of Gnome junk for the same apps that have been happily
running without it?? Is it a Gnome issue in that Gnome has decided to
include the world for every little thing or is it a Gentoo setup?

That's interesting. I'll have to remember this. In my case getting rid of
evolution fixed it.

My concern is what changed to suddenly cause all this Gnome junk to be
needed??

I noticed this a bit on my main desktop system, and it's not a big deal,
I have most of the gnome stuff in there already and I was happy to see
some updates to programs.

However, I also have a headless server that does nothing but serve
apache(+mod_perl +php), squid, samba and postfix (I have USE="-X -gnome
-kde") suddenly wants to install things like gnome-print, gnome-libs,
etc.

Nothing on the server use flag wise has changed since the last upgrade,
so this is a bit perturbing, and annoying.

Any reason for these changes? Or is there any sort of review process
that these go through to see if people need the extra deps? Normally I
wouldn't mind, but I am using gentoo on this little server (3G of drives)
because of it's (former) ability to strip things down to the bare bones.

I used to do that. Lately it appears that cdrecord picks up on that
automatically. It may only be necessary now in cases where cdrecord doesn't
get it right.

But, it won't hurt anything.

If your CD-R[W] drive supports it, may also want to add this flag:

driveropts=burnfree

to the cdrecord command line as well. Less chances of a coaster :)

I put these two lines in /etc/bashrc and just use the command line to go from
CD to iso and iso to CD.

alias cd2iso='dd if=/dev/scd0'
alias iso2cd='cdrecord -v -eject -data speed=24 dev=0,0,0'

Some people have suggested that you need to specify the block size on the
cd2iso line, but I've never had any problem. Of course, you'll have to adjust
the details to match your drive info. if you feel the need to specify block
size, the parameter is bs=.

Usage:

cd2iso of=isoname.iso

iso2cd isoname.iso

If you are cutting multiple cd's from a single iso, it's the only way to go.

Re: [gentoo-user] Bunch of Gnome junk to be added in world upgrade!???

2003-07-13 Thread Brett I. Holcomb
Sorry, this didn't go to the list.

I'm using qpkg to find out what depends on some of these. One is Evolution
which I was testing and which I'll probably remove and see if I can find
another mail client (not Kmail!).

What bothers me is that previous to this none of this gnome stuff was
needed but now all of a sudden emerge wants to dump all this junk in. LIke
you if I wanted a Gnome desktop I'd run it and not xfce! I think Gnome is
trying to keep up with KDE in terms of size and working it's way into
everything! I don't mind having a little bit that's necessary to provide
some support but all these libraries, etc is too much.

I looked at grip for a Caldera system and didn't want it because of all the
stuff that went with it from Gnome. At that time I was using RPM and
couldn't get the right Gnome libraries to make it work!

It was Evolution - I unmerged it and all that junk is no longer needed. Now
all I need is an email client for this system.

Hmm, I notice that one of the offenders (gconf for Gnome) has gone from
1.0.8 to 2.2.0. I'm not familiar with Gnome (having used it briefly once and
not been back to it) - it's only on my system for a few programs who need it
and if a program requires Gnome parts I think long and hard about adding it.
Could it be that the new Gnome 2.x stuff drags more junk in then it did
before?

[gentoo-user] Bunch of Gnome junk to be added in world upgrade!???

2003-07-13 Thread Brett I. Holcomb
I did an emerge sync and then emerge -u --deep system -p which listed rsync
as the only package to be upgraded - I did upgrade it. I then did emerge -u
--deep world -p and get a long list of stuff - most of it Gnome stuff marked
N.

I notice mailbase is being upgraded which adds linc and then
gnome-base/ORBit2. Gnome-base-gconf adds things like bonobo, libglade pulls
in some stuff, and gonome-vfs does, too - and this continues for long page
of stuff.

What changed to cause the update to want to jam a bunch of Gnome stuff on my
system - or is something borked with emerge?
