You, sir, are a genius. Ok, maybe not really, but thanks anyway--I didn't have that
going myself.

Thanks!

You need to add domainname to the default runlevel.

rc-update add domainname default.

This handles both the DNS and NIS domainnames.

I had similar problems until I found that the last entry in the hosts file is the one
used by evolution when sending mail.
So, if you list several addresses/machines names, make sure the last entry is yours.

I presume you have domainname running:

# rc-update show
domainname | boot

If not then run rc-update add domainname boot, /etc/init.d/domainname
start

That should help.

Cheers

I had the same problem until I fixed my /etc/hosts file like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.2machinename.domainname machinename #note replace the
192.168.0.2 with whatever your network card ip is.

my /etc/hostname contains only my machine name

my /etc/dnsdomainname contains the domain name.

Hopefully someone else can help you there. I couldn't figure it out. I
needed the static ip addresses anyway for samba to work properyly for
printer and file sharing on my little home network.

My /etc/hosts had the form

192.168.0.2 machinename machinename.domainname

and as you pointed out, inverting the second and third column does the
job.
Thank you.
