Hi, I have been trying tightvnc this morning. Is it not possible to get tightvnc to transmit the whole root window so I can see the desktop on the vncserver machine, like I do with PC Anywhere? I thought it was, so I must be starting the vncserver incorrectly for doing that. Assuming you could, then couldn't Mathieu start an X session on the server machine, but directed to a different display, and then disconnect and reconnect when needed? this would be a private X session and not the one someone sitting in front of the machine would be looking at. Ah I don't think there is a difference, if you use vnc or if you run some exportetd application in both cases you have to transmit the grafic details, I think if you reduce the detail by setting options in vnc you will even have better performance with vnc, than running an exported app. Correct me guys if I'm wrong. I dont know what you mean by "grabbing the whole desktop". If by that you mean that when you use vnc you have to spawn a new desktop (hence you cant use your old current one) then there is a solution for this. emerge gemsvnc.
