i had this problem a couple of days ago..it was with the latest version
nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r1.ebuild
somewhere in the forums it was suggested that you try
nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336.ebuild and it works :)

I was having problems with making a working system using the latest
Linux kernel and nvidia driver. When the kernel module was loaded
there where no /dev/nv* entries. Trying to start X resulted in
"Unable to initialize kernel module" messages. Yet it was working in
a 2.4.23 kernel on the same machine. I finally realized that the only
major difference between the two kernels was that I had not enabled
/devfs in 2.6.2 because it is obsolete. I recompiled with it enabled
and it worked as well as with the 2.4.23 kernel.

I am not using devfs with my 2.6.2 kernel using nvidia. I use udev.
