KHOMMENT:

I am in 'total upsetment' at the electoral loss suffered by Valancca,

If we research Eugene's recent writings, we might find the names of
two young ladies ...appearing repetitiously i.e. Selma and Valancca.

Selma, of course, is married and (good for her) lives in the UK/US; If
Valancca was elected, our Genius Patracar would have a good excuse to
interview her (perhaps) every week.

But, unfortunately, Valancca lost.

But there is still hope for an enterprising patracar. Another title:
'Anatomy of Valancca'.

Come on Selma.
It's Eugene Correia, not Monteiro.
Your assessment is correct. Too many good cooks spoiled the soup for the
Alemaos.
As far as Goa having GR8 leaders is concerned, every second person in Goa
is a leader :-)
But what Goa badly needs is a 'SYSTEMIC LEADER' to walk the talk of Good
Governance with spelled out moves and procedures that will not lead to chaos
and infights for the spoils of war after the WIN.
And if you again believe that this is not available too, then all you have
to do is hit www.goasu-raj.org to see it rolling upwards in front of your
eyes.

PS: I was at the Calvin Ferry point during the great tragedy recently were
the bus rolled into the waters which in itself is a great mystery with
terrible loss of life of young kids among adults. And people of Calvim seem
to have been gunning for just one head. 'NARVEKAR'S' from that day on.
Against all odds, I campaigned into Calvim along with Julius Pereira
(candidate)extensively, going door to door, commisserating with the
bereaved families and telling them that the cover-up of the incident should
not be permitted at all costs and if need be we were willing to lead a
delegation to the Police Station (Mapusa/Panjim) to demand thorough
investigation into the incident.

I have just got the booth voting results/pattern of 10-Aldona Constituency:
Booth No. 41: St Domnic Savio Sports Club, Calvim:
Dayanand Narvekar-INC: 199
Glen Ticlo-BJP: 143
Julius Pereira-GSRP: 0
Wilfred D'Souza-TMC: 20
Ravindra V. Panjikar-Ind: 3

Lesson: People vote for Leaders, not foot-soldiers of LEADERS.
Cheers again.

There is no great "backlash" against the Alemaos.

In Cuncolim, John Monteiro (Independent) fractured the vote, otherwise he
had a clear win. In Sanguem, Prasad Goankar fractured the NCP-Congress
base or he had a clear win there. In Benaulim, Vikas party voters are all
former Congress voters and so are Hubert Gomes' voters. If it wasn't for
Hubert, Valanka would have had a win. Goa Vikas party has done the
greatest damage to the Congress. Vikas is the brainchild of Micky -Micky's
voters are all recovering Congress voters. Micky has no greater agenda or
ideology than the Alemaos.

Goa is an extremely small state. A matter of 2000 votes can make the
difference between a win and a lose.

The only thing you can discern for certain in this election is that the
Catholic population of Goa is in disarray without any clear political
leadership. They are hopping mad and they were out for blood - not
particularly Alemao blood but Congress blood. In the end, that is how
peaceful revolutions come about. But like every revolution, there must be
great leaders waiting in the wings to take over, otherwise the Alemaos can
regroup within 2 years and re-emerge like a nightmarish severed head.

Does Goa have great leaders in the wings waiting to take over? Because I'm
a Goan, I hope so.

Best,
Selma

How my friend has forgotten by surname (ha, hal). Monteiro from
Correia, goodness gracias! I hoped our "clinical eye," the Rt. Hon JC
would have caught that.
Anyww coming to Selma's point, I wrote the piece as soon as I knew
that all four Alemaos were defeated. I wanted to catch the OHeraldo
deadline. As I write I haven't gone through Fred's article as I had to
go for some errands. On returning, I saw Selma's post and thought I
should reply immediately. I will be reading Fred's piece as soon as I
send this post.
As I said in my piece, the Alemaos cannot be ruled out of not making a
comeback. But John Monteiro did make a big difference and robbed
Joaquim of vital votes. In Benaulim, Hubert and John's votes make have
been split between Valanka and Caitu and Valanka could have pipped
Caitu at the finishing tape. Yuri was impressive in Sanquem, and two
votes of the two Christian candidates could have taken him over the
top.
In Cortalim, UDGP did its former member Mathany a favour by fielding Borkar.
These are "ifs" and "buts" of the election.

[Goanet] Anatomy of the Alemaos

2012-03-06 Thread Eugene Correia

Anatomy of the Alemao

EUGENE CORREIA

The downfall of the Alemaos in the election will go down as a landmark
event in Goa’s electoral history. During the run-up to the election
and in the waiting period before the day of results, different
scenarios were painted in the print and TV media and in political
circles. Very few expected Churchill and Joaquim to lose and the
performance of Valanka and Yuri was looked with keen interest. At
least for a short period if not the full term of the new Government,
the Alemaos would do well for themselves if they take a respite. They
need the time away from the heat – and humiliation – of the voters’
anger against them and also to lick their wounds.

It is not that Churchill hasn’t tasted defeat before. At the same
time, he has scored big victories at the parliamentary and state
levels, defeating Eduardo Faleiro to take a seat in parliament in 1996
and then dismissing Luizinho Faleiro, a friend-turned-foe on the
latter’s happy hunting ground, Navelim, in the Assembly election. The
Navelim contest was hailed as the Battle of the Kumpars (as Luizinho
is godfather of Churchill’s son).

The defeat of the Alemaos is partly because of the BJP wave and partly
because of the angst against Joaquim and Churchill’s arrogant defence
of the “family raj” politics and their arm-twisting tactics that led
to Congress giving ticket to Valanka.

The couple of incidents during the run-up, such as the British MP,
Keith Vaz, making a pit-stop at a Valanka campaign meeting, Valanka’s
threat against a journalist who runs a website, and the allegation of
Churchill against Digambar Kamat, saying that the latter who working
for Churchill’s defeat, the Yuri ticket compromise with the NCP,
definitely shook the voters’ confidence and trust.

It would have been best for Churchill to have passed on the baton to
his daughter and quietly walked into the sunset. Doing that would go
against the grain of Churchill’s character. He is a fighter and has
shown how he has bounced back with more vigour and more vitality. Even
if he is now forced into the shadows, Churchill’s presence will
continue to loom large on the scene in Salcete.

Except for his voters and supporters, Goans, by and large, will not
shed many tears for the defeat of this family. The family’s rise in
politics is a story of both good and bad, of reaching out to the poor
and of abusing authority through money and muscle power. Churchill’s
long innings in politics, being an MP twice and CM once, and a MLA for
many terms, seems a story of make-believe but very much true. Don’t
write finish to the family’s role in politics.
