Re: [Histonet] ub subscribe

2010-03-22 Thread Peter Carroll
sometimes, i feel like im stuck in some histonet unsubscribe timewarp. i hate
it!

i really wish that the histonet admins would address this 'unsubscribe' madness
once and for all. the periodic notices on how to unsubscribe arent working and
sadly, the casual subscriber has proven that they dont know how to properly use
a listserv...  someone needs to rethink how this list is administrated. i mean
no offense, just constructive criticism. if theres any way any of us can help
out, im sure many of us with various expertises would gladly volunteer, just
say the word!

i am confident that i speak for all of us when i say that this repetitive,
mindless unsubscribe business really detracts from the quality of my histonet
experience, and theres no reason why we cant work together to fix it cone and
for all :)

Does anyone know of a transparent plastic cover that goes over a

We use cadavers in the anatomy lab and would like to display the cadaver

Since I've already apparently made the impression of being up tight, I
may as well go on and also add that, on top of the ~15 off-topic emails
we've already gotten concerning an email scam you fell for, I sort of
feel that sending someone else's privately-mailed insult of a perfect
stranger to an entire mailing list to be a bit, well, tactless.

Oh well, at least its friday, eh? :)

Akemi Allison-Tacha wrote:

Hi All,

volumes of similar problems.

Akemi,

Boy! Peter needs an Oxycontin! Maybe more than
 one.

Don't worry about this. The correct term is being "Email Spoofed." From my friends, it happens when some
computer hijacker either creates content on a new or existing web site that you ended up clicking on. Peter suggests
it is "Where" you visited, but it could be anywhere, even on a legitimate site. Some people I've talked to
think Microsoft's web page is loaded with "Spoof" and "Spyware!"

Sometimes, it is a computer worm or virus affecting your computer. Most of the
time, it is associated with your email
provider. [Most of my friends with Yahoo email have been "Spoofed."]

I would run a up-to-date anti-virus software, and (especially if that doesn't help) ask for help from Yahoo to quarantine or fix your address.

You probably have it fixed already. If
not, it will do it again until someone stops it. It IS only email. So what???

I did in NO WAY send this e-mail! Please do not in anyway answer or send money to the bogus e-mail scam which was sent in my name. THIS IS SCARY!
I don't know what has happened, but I came home last night and my yahoo account sent me an e-mail which stated that my e-mail has been compromised for scam purposes, and if I didn't answer the questions below I would have my account frozen. I immediately replied and answered the questions, but then I thought, what if this is a scam to extract personal information, so I copied the the questionnaire and sent it to the yahoo alert center. I received a reply that they would check into it. This morning I couldn't get into my e-mail account so I had to jump a bunch of hoops and reset my password. The Yahoo Account warning stated: "Yahoo Mail has discovered series of illegal

I guess that's the problem. As a non-commercial list, the ratio should
be more like 100/0.

> I don't know if you're from Ventana or Daka or whomever

I'm "from" neither and actually use no products by either of those
vendors, nor yours. I joined Histonet to give/get histology advice on
protocols and laboratory procedure, not to constantly be barraged- both
on and off list- by vendors trying to push their products, no matter how
subtly.

Although they may not violate any specific "letter of the law" on
Histonet, commercial posts or tie-ins, no matter how tasteful or
friendly, do definitely violate the "spirit" of the list, at least in my
eyes.

Just my two cents...

Michael Mihalik wrote:
Sheila, I apologize to you and Peter and to whomever else I have offended.

I view Histonet as a place where people can go for knowledge and where
people can share their experiences.

I was trying to share my experience with LIS systems and information system
technology in general. I do admit that I had one paragraph in there about
our own product, but I was trying to illustrate a point. I thought I had
spent a bit of time talking about Ventana and Dako and as you've read my
other posts, you've seen me mention Leica and others as well. I always talk
about things from an information technology perspective. That's what I do
and that's what I believe I am good at. I don't know if you're from Ventana
or Daka or whomever, but please notice that I stated I have no problems with
what you guys are doing. In fact, I applaud you for filling a very needed
role in the industry. In other posts I've perhaps compared Leica and
Ventana, but I've only done so from an information
technology/interface/labeling perspective. I know very little about the
chemistry involved and therefore I am not qualified to say which instrument
is better suited for the task.

I think everyone should ask more of their LIS vendors. In that way everyone
benefits. But, how do people know what to ask for if they don't know that
certain things are possible. I was hoping to encourage people to ask for
further functionality from their LIS vendors... and yes, I fully admit that
there was some component of publicity. However, I do feel like it was 90/10
or 80/20 knowledge vs publicity.

So, please forgive me I offended anyone, but I still think there are a lot
of information technology aspects that people are not aware of and that a
majority of people would like to learn about. Everyone will notice that I
always publish all of my contact information and my company name. I'm not
trying to 'sneak something' by anyone. Competition is good for everyone.
Is it not?

And finally, Sheila, I wouldn't call you 'wrong'. You've got an opinion and
I respect it. I just disagree. I'll shut up now, and if you or anyone else
would like to talk to me please feel free to do so. (My contact information

Hi Michael,

I have been reading with great curiosity your postings on Histonet. Other
vendors have been shot in the knees for doing what you appear to be doing!
You are openly soliciting!

I personally don't care to read your opinions about the various LIS and LEAN

competitor! Your system may be as great you tell us - but I see it as a
sales pitch.

If you want to sell to histologists - you had best be at NSH. That would
allow histologists to view your product right next to your competitors.

I may be wrong, and if I am please correct me.

Since we're on the subject, I also wish vendors would stop searching the
Histonet Archives for certain keywords involving their products, then
cold-calling/emailing/spamming people who posted/replied to said threads
with sales-pitches. For example, not to name names (Renee Schultz at
Thermo-Fisher) but someone recently wrote me a series of
sales-soliciting emails, explaining that they were "following up on an
earlier conversation" we had had. Since I tend to remember actual
conversations I've had (and her name/inquiry didn't sound familiar), I
questioned her, and she freely admitted to perusing the archives and
actually maintaining a sort of database of our comments on this list to
use for future sales pitches... one of which I received... 6 months
after the fact... despite the fact that I was answering someone else's
question about a product, not complaining about it or searching for a
new vendor myself!

Dear Linda:
Matthew Semovoski [histosea...@gmail.com] posted this on Histonet this
AM: Hey everyone, I am looking at getting some supplies for a new
histology lab. Has anyone ever purchased from Gorilla Scientific?
www.GorillaScientific.com I just got a flyer in the mail from them and
it seems like they have some really good prices. I think I can save a
lot on my slides if I purchase from them. Has anyone else on here
purchased anything from them? Thanks, Alex histosea...@gmail.com
Well it was not Alex who posted it was Matthew Semovoski who posted this
& he is the man who answers the phone when you call up Gorilla
Scientific. I as a sales person play fair & do not try to do any slick
sales adds on histonet & wanted to make you aware of this. (I really am
such a geek & LOVE TO LEARN from Histonet too!) So I really do want to
thank you for all of the hard work that you do & just wanted to make you
aware of this instance. Thank you so much & have a great weekend!

I don't want to turn this into a major discussion but would like to
remind everyone that we run Histonet using University of Texas resources
and they would not appreciate (or support) its use for commercial
advertising even if it is disguised in a misleading message. Thank you,

so I'll go ahead a little early with what I hope is a reply that may
enlighten, be consultative, and hopefully not too offensive to those that
may be sensitive to such replies. Here it goes...

My First Question: You state that your lab has “purchased all used
equipment”. What vendor did you purchase from that did not provide
operator’s manuals with the equipment? This is unheard of amongst us
reputable used/refurbished equipment dealers so if I were you, I would not
recommend this vendor to others.

Now let’s make sure that I have the facts straight... You have posted a
request that is seeking charity from members of this list that also
includes vendors. In addition, not only are you asking for free copies of
publications that have been copyrighted and are the proprietary
information of the manufacturers that, at great R&D expenditure developed
them, but you are asking that the donor(s) mail hard copies (if available)
to you ...at the donor’s expense for the shipping & handling. Should
hard-copies not be available, you request the donor(s) to provide these
lengthy documents in digital PDF format... again with a substantial
expense to the donor(s) of converting these publications into digital
form. Surprisingly, you have made this burdensome and expensive request
without any offer to reimburse the charitable donor(s) for their time and
expense to do all of this work for you. In your final statement you then
wistfully hope that some benevolent vendor should raise their hand and
offer you a (free) copy and then insult that same vendor buy stating that
you “won’t hold your breath for that”.

My Second Question: Are you crazy?

>From your signature address; it appears that you are employed by a company
called Halozyme Therapeutics. A quick web search informs us that Halozyme
is a for-profit California company that had revenues in the tens of
millions in 2008. It was also exciting to learn that Halozyme is in Phase
2 clinical trials of their innovative insulin-PH20 with individuals that
suffer from Type 1 diabetes. Very impressive.

Here is some good news for you. I happen to have ALL the operator manuals
for the equipment that you are requesting. I will copy them for you and
send them to you at my expense under one condition. You state that if
someone can do this for you that you “will repay the favor, if at all
possible”. I have a family member that is a Type 1 insulin-dependent
diabetic. All I ask in return is that you arrange with your marketing
department that they send me a one-year’s supply of PH20 when it is
released to the public... all at no charge, including shipping & handling
of course.

My Third Question: Do we have a deal?

I look forward to your reply,

I our lab we've purchased all used equipment. None of these instruments

Sakura Tissue-Tek VIP 3000

Hi Andi, Happy Friday!
I know there's been a "Histogel backlash" of late, but I would still
recommend trying it. I haven't had any problems. We use it for scant
neuro specimens every day. We also have used H.G. for mouse sural nerve
biopsies that needed to retain orientation (very tiny). If you do use
Histogel, do not put it in a histoscreen or biopsy cassette and be sure
to put it on a process that's long enough. People often use the
cassette/process based on the size of the tissue, not of the Histogel
block. I'd ask thermo for a sample of H.G. and try it. If you need any
Histogel help, let me know. I'm a huge fan!
Have a great day,
Jennifer

Good Morning!
In keeping with the weirdness of the projects I get in this lab today
my question is about processing mosquito GI tracts.
I have a processing schedule - that is not the problem. I'm wondering
if anybody out in histoland has a suggestion for what kind of
cassette to use. I was thinking of the histoscreen cassette because
these GI tracts are so thin (I think thinner than a hair)and I don't
want to wrap them or use sponges because I'm afraid that I'll loose
them or crush them.

Any ideas?

if you may dispose of formalin down the drain, they also dictate how much.

I have to disagree. Although it certainly is not environmentally friendly
to

dispose of formalin down the drain, it is not prohibited. At the hospital
where I worked, a city inspector came to the lab and and designated in
writing how many gallons of formalin could be put in the sewer system per
day
and we had to keep a written log of how many gallons we could dispose of
and

could not go over our amount or we would be fined.

It is absolutely prohibited, "verboten" to dump formalin into the sewer

Hi All,
We have a question regarding the disposal of formaldehyde. We were told at
our hospital that a consultant said it was okay to dump formaldehyde down
the
drain. I believe they said it was okay to dump 15 gallons or so a day! We
are
not to fond of this idea and would like to know what everyone else is

How is everyone disposing of their formaldehyde? We would be especially
interested in what other hospitals in CT are doing.

Pretty much. Having spent years doing path at a huge local hospital
which featured a slave-driving lab director who was less qualified to
run the lab than half the people working in it, I must say that I agree
with this observation.

At the same time, as much as I enjoy my more laid-back research path
position now, I'd get fired in a heartbeat if I produced only one block
every 30 minutes. Actually, I just got finished doing closer to 40 in
the last hour, and today was a fairly slow day (yet not at all on par
with the old clinical stats, were 8-12 techs embedded/sectioned closer
to 800-1000 blocks per shift).

Charles.Embrey wrote:

Jerry, you are right that clinical work is different from research. You are wrong to

All this talk of having people actually section as part of the interview process is offensive to me.

I have hired and trained lots of histotechnologists. Mostly I train them
myself, from scratch, but sometimes I hire them pre-trained. Then of course, I
re-train them anyway so they can do the work to the specs of my lab. Any
deficiencies they have will be corrected through training. By me.

At my University there is a formal 30 day (maybe it's longer, I can't recall)
probationary period for new hires. That's good enough. Why in the world
would I need to have them section as part of an interview process?

I am also offended by the "blocks per hour" language. Partly it's because in
my lab we do exhaustive serial sectioning, so I consider a tech who gives me one block
every half-hour to be doing a good job.

Maybe it's different in clinical work, but...20 blocks per hour? And you expect quality work?

Jeez, are clinical histopath labs just sweat-shops?

It's no wonder histopathologists feel overworked and underappreciated.

We also have the staff talk to the applicant during this process. It gives you
a good idea if the person can talk and cut at the same time. The last thing
anyone wants is a histotech that has to stop sectioning during a conversation!

I for one always required any applicant to prepare 20 slides stained with H&E. I can
assure that I selected "difficult" blocks to cut and the applicant was required to
sign a disclaimer that included that s/he he knew how to section and avoid injuries.
The whole process was timed (to get a first idea about productivity) and I
evaluated and graded the slides at the end.
The results were used as one of the elements to decide about offering the
position (the fundamental) but I waited until all the applicants had completed
the tests so sometimes the applicant had to be contacted a few days later to
let him/her know about the results.

I have a question about the following statement plucked from a recent digest.
What are the legal ramifications if a person cuts themselves during an
interview?
We've had this discussion at my place of employment and came to the

decision that it would leave us open to a legal liability.
I would love to hear some discussion on this subject, as well as any
experiences that others have had.

I don't know that you ought to let it hurt your feelings or something, though.

In the world of business, it is reasonable to expect that head hunters are at
all times seeking to hire your best and brightest out from under you--the way
to stop them is by making it worth people's while to stick around.

To my knowledge, histotechnologists are, as a rule of thumb, over-worked and
under-appreciated.

And yet they are darn handy to have around.

I suggest that you make it your personal mission to ensure that your histotechs ARE NOT
looking for another job. That way, when a recruiter calls, your techs say "Leave my

I Wanted to obtained opinions of Managers/Supervisors in the histo world and how you handle situations
regarding recruiters calling directly into Pathology Labs to specific tech's and stating they are seeking
referrals for job placements. I recently had an AP staffing solution company call one of my labs to talk to
any "histologist" I felt was to recruit staff. I feel this is an unprofessional practice to call
directly into the laboratory and to hide behind the wording "referrals" when actually it appears
they are trying to get information from the tech on the phone seeing if they are looking for a "new
job". I feel that this is an intrusion as well as inappropriate in our line of business and we are not
in the business to give referrals to companies in the staffing solution arena for their monetary gain as well
as trying to entice our staff. What the staff does with these types of companies on personal time is their
business, however, I think it is offending for companies to demonstrate this behavior. If anyone would like
