Re: [Histonet] erroneous results

2019-11-06 Thread Schumacher, Jennifer J via Histonet
1. Remove the result, possibly replace with a phrase similar to "Results
previously reported did not belong to this patient"-- to some extent it depends
on the capability of your EMR/LIS
2. If unable to remove, then amend with same phrasing listed above, but
attempt to wipe out all of the data reported incorrectly, to prevent anyone in
the future from using that result for that patient.
3. Depends on the EMR/LIS, may need to leave a trace, but make it as hard as
possible to find it.
4. Not familiar with our Pap correction process.

Hello-

Could you please share your process for erroneous results? Scenario: Specimen
received, processed and reported out. Physician office calls to say that the
specimen was labeled with incorrect patient information. 1. Do you remove the
results? 2. do you amend the report? 3. do you leave any trace? 4. is your
process the same for surgical specimens as it is for GYN paps?

Looking forward to the discussion,

[Histonet] Use of Freeze Spray in a Cryostat

2019-05-28 Thread Schumacher, Jennifer J via Histonet
Hi all,
Looking for some documentation regarding the use of Freeze Spray in cryostats.

A Best Practice document would be ideal, but in the absence of such a document,
I would like to hear how others are planning to address the "recall" by Leica
where they do not recommend the use of the Freeze Spray in their cryostats due
to the possibility of a fire (flammable reagent).

I personally have always had concerns around infection since the specimens are
fresh and using the spray could aerosolize any infectious agents that are
present.

There is a lot of pressure to freeze things rapidly to meet the FS TAT, so the
battle goes back and forth.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Jennifer

[Histonet] Histology flooring

2017-10-11 Thread Schumacher, Jennifer J via Histonet
Hi Histonetters,

We are looking to replace our flooring in Histology. Has anyone found a floor
that they LOVE for Histology?

Here are some of our challenges:

1) Floor cannot be slippery for pathologists/OR personnel/vendors who walk
into the space in heels or wearing booties.

2) Histology needs to be able to scrape the floor to remove paraffin.

3) Histology needs to be able to identify tissue should it fall to the
floor, inked or not inked.

4) Histology needs to be able to clean up small chemical spills,
especially xylene, with it soaking into or melting the floor.

Our housekeeping has significant staffing challenges, so an extensive
housekeeping requirement to maintain the floors would not be an option for us.

Thank you for your input (as specific as possible please).

Jennifer

[Histonet] RE: Angle of Wrist/Hands Using Microtome?

2014-12-08 Thread Schumacher, Jennifer J
I am not an ergonomic expert, and can't back this statement with fact, but I
think that "without bending the wrist" is the key variable, as that is
considered a "neutral" position that would not harm the employee.

Subject: [Histonet] Angle of Wrist/Hands Using Microtome?

Hi all!

When I took HTL exam and there was a question on the exam that bothered me the
most but I cannot find an exact answer for it, had to guess! I'm very curious
about your thoughts on this. I have asked Histology Core and they weren't sure
about it either - wanted to share it with you guys if you know the official
answer for this!

The question was mainly about the angle of wrist/hands on the rotating
microtome and the degree must be correct so it won't cause any stress on
wrist/hands, it listed 4 different choices:

1. 30 degrees wrist down forward

2. 90 degrees straight without bending the wrist

3. 60 degrees wrist up backward

4. 60 or 90 degrees wrist down forward

(Please be gentle with me since I don't remember the EXACT numbers but those
were close to numbers provided.)

Thank you!

Denise Smith

[Histonet] RE: Flammable cabinets

In my experience, restrictions are determined by fire codes and "zones". I
would talk to your safety officer or facilities, or a local fire marshal.

We are a research lab and usually the restrictions apply to flammables outside
the cabinet. I believe they don't want more than 100-150ml of any one
flammable. I don't think there is a restriction to what's stored inside
one--probably depends upon the size of the cabinet.

Can anybody explain how much alcohol or other flammables we can store in a
flammable cabinet in a room? I have read the CAP guidelines and am still
confused. Do the CAP guidelines only have to do with stored reagents outside
of a flammable cabinet?
What am I missing?

We have two of these units and love them. We also recently remodeled and made
sure to include space for them in the gross room to reduce transport as well.

We have a ventilated closet for storing our old specimens. Our lab is
two years old, and this was something that I asked for specifically when
they were designing the lab.
