I don't remember doing a me-too reply before, so this is not one
neither.

I'm really moved & shaken by reading all the replies.

BB was one of my most favourite posters of all times. I used to read
every one
of his posts.

Some poet, somewhere on this rock we all live on, wrote a poem a few
centuries ago, saying:

If you could fly, you'd be a fly;
If you could walk on water, you'd be a twig;
Find your way into somebody's heart, to be somebody.

I think BB was truly blessed & a lucky man, judging by all the replies I

I wish God would use a much bigger ERV for good people.

RIP BB.

Thanks for that. I had been trying to remember how long I'd read things
from Bruce and I'd forgotten the NaSCOM days.

Folks, there are many of us that have headed off into the sunset that

I just am really at a loss for words. Many have said great things, but

I first met Bruce back in the mid/late 80's as part of a local NaSPA
chapter (SPONJ - Systems Programmers of New Jersey). He stuck with us
as long as we lasted (2 years or so, the memory is fading) and even held
a few meetings at Innovation in Little Falls. He was always supportive
of us in those days. I also managed to meet him a couple of times at
SHARE or MVS EXPO vendor areas, IIRC Innovation didn't let him get out
much . I was always impressed by his postings on IBM-MAIN with
never a disparaging word and always an honest willingness to help. His
postings IMHO did more to raise my impression of him and Innovation as
the 'nice guys' of the industry. Although I can't say I knew him
personally beyond the above interactions, he set a standard that will be
hard to follow.

Actually he's #2, since the first two are both Shmuel! I don't think
words can adequately describe our loss. He really was a great guy in
real life as well as online and his life long store of knowledge can't
be replaced. We are all poorer for his passing.

I am very sad to hear this news. I had always looked forward to meeting

Re: Bruce Black passed away

2007-11-06 Thread Support, DUNNIT SYSTEMS LTD.
Several times over the years, Bruce's posts have helped me one way or the
other.

Any person who contributes their time and effort to help others, as Bruce did,
deserves much respect. The best way to do this, I think, would be to try and
mimic his helpfulness and courtesy. I'm a big talker and of limited knowledge
in
so many technical spheres but I hope I get the opportunity to practice what I
preach.

May he rest in peace.

I am very sorry to say that Bruce Black passed away this past weekend.

Those of you that knew Bruce know that he had been in poor health for some
time, but things were looking better. So this has come as a surprise to
many of us.

The folks at Innovation will keep Bruce's email address active for some
time, so if you want to send condolences to the family you can send them
to Bruce's email address at Innovation and they will forward them along to
his family.

Re: Bruce Black [passed away]

2007-11-05 Thread john gilmore
Taken all for all, I shall not see his like again.

Bruce and I agreed about many of the deficiencies of this list; but he was less
intolerant than I: He had larger human sympathies. [Subliterate, too generic
[post] subject lines angered me, for example; he noted and deplored them
without judging that much if anything could be or, finally, needed to be done
about them.]

He was a consummate programmer and a radically attractive human being, in a
word irreplaceable here and, I suspect, in many other contexts too. John

Having worked at Innovation many years ago, I had the pleasure of knowing
Bruce and what you saw was what you got. A great technician, a wonderful
human being and a class act. This is very sad news for all of us who knew
him and for those who will now never have that opportunity.

in all of his postings he was always professional and competent. He will be
missed.

Re: Bruce Black passed away

2007-11-05 Thread Tom Harper
Russ,

Although I know Bruce had been having health issues for some time, this
is indeed a time of grief.

Bruce had been one of the very special people in this business for a
very, very long time. Even though his products have long been considered
the epitome in every category from function, stability, performance, to
price, he was always working to extend those qualities. He had a
perspective of the software business that few others will ever be able
to achieve. Yet he was always the first to contribute an answer, either
here on IBM-MAIN or privately, and never asked for anything in return.
Bruce was one of the most knowledgeable persons in channel programming I
have ever known, including many CCWs that were never publicly
documented. I doubt if the community will ever recover the loss in
information that passed on with Bruce. He was truly one of a kind, and
he will be sorely missed.
