CAVMEN Meeting on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - Updated Abstracts

2007-10-04 Thread Chicago Area VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts
The fourth quarter meeting of the Chicago Area VM (and Linux)
Enthusiasts will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2007.

The Final Agenda with updated abstracts is included below.

--

Meeting Location:

NOTE: We are NOT meeting in the same room that we met in last quarter!

This quarter's meeting will be held at the Hewitt Associates 'East
Campus' located at 100 Half Day Road, in Lincolnshire, IL. We will
meet in the 100-M3 Conference Room, just off the cafeteria.

If you have not attended a meeting at this location before, or you
are not familiar with the area,
additional information on directions, maps, lodging and dining.

--

Attendance:

We would like to request a count of expected attendees by the Monday
before the meeting, so that we may plan appropriately for arranging
the facilities, and for refreshments and lunch, should one of the
vendors wish to provide them. If you are planning to attend, PLEASE
send an E-Mail by that date to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject line of
"Meeting Attendance".

This is meant to be a facilities planning aid and should not be
interpreted as a registration requirement. If you suddenly become
available at the last minute, please feel free to attend even if you
have not responded.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

--

Cell Phone Policy:

All electronic devices (cell phones, Blackberry's, etc.) if switched
on must be kept in silent mode during the meeting. If you need to
make or receive a call, you must quietly leave the meeting room to do
so. There is a large quiet area outside of the meeting room that is
ideal for this.

Any intentional or repeat violations of this policy will result in
that individual being escorted from the premises and potentially
excluded from future meetings.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM z/VM Device Support Overview

Come to this presentation to hear an overview of current device
support available on z/VM Version 5. The speaker will discuss Disk,
Tape, and OSA technologies available for VM system I/O and guest
operating systems running under z/VM. This presentation is also well
suited for an audience new to z/VM.

The speaker will be Mr. Eric Farman of the IBM Corporation.

10:30 AMCoffee Break

11:00 AMIntroduction to the IBM System Storage DS6000

This presentation brings you up to date on the IBM System Storage
DS6000, an affordable storage solution specifically designed to help
medium and large enterprises simplify their storage infrastructures,
support business continuity, and optimize information life cycle
management. The DS6000 provides both SCSI and FICON attachment,
enabling it to serve the needs of your z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM and Linux
operating systems.

The speaker will be Mr. Eric Farman of the IBM Corporation.

12:30 PMLunch Break

1:30 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements

2:00 PM A Starter System for Novell SLES

Almost a year ago, a discussion started on the Linux-390 mailing list
about the difficulty of getting the first Linux system in a System Z
environment working, and the complexity of coordinating all the
CD/DVD, network and other resources to get a working system. After a
long effort, SNA has collaborated with Novell to provide a supported
starter system for SLES 10 SP1 that can be installed with CMS tools
(no CD/DVD needed). The talk will describe the system, the
assumptions and design decisions we made in the process of creating
the starter system, and information on getting the system from the
Novell web site.

The speaker will be Dr. David Boyes of Sine Nomine Associates.

3:15 PM Coffee Break and Prize Drawing

3:30 PM Open Source Backup

As Linux moves into the production environment, the question of
backup and restore capability for individual files and applications
has become more critical; the full-volume dump tools available in
z/OS and z/VM have a number of difficulties that make them unpleasant
to use for backup of running systems in production. There are a few
commercial solutions, but there are also sophisticated open source
solutions available to provide file level and image level backup for
running Linux systems in combination with a little help from CMS and
z/VM. The talk will describe some of the commercial landscape
options, and describe several of the open source options available.
We'll look closely at Bacula and see how to implement it in a
production environment.

The speaker will be Dr. David Boyes of Sine Nomine Associates.

4:45 PM Free-for-All

Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related
questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others
are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software
and

Re: D/R Code

2007-10-04 Thread Fran Hensler
We have two FLEX-ES systems on opposite ends of the campus.

The DR system does not have as many tape drives as the production
system. The production system has a drive at 0591 but the DR system
does not.

In the AUTOLOG1 DIRECT I haveDEDICATE 0591 0591

When AUTOLOG1 starts up it does a CP Q V 0591 and if it doesn't
exist I know I am on the DR machine.

AUOTLOG1 also has write access to TCPMAINTs 198 disk. If I am not
on the production machine then an EXEC on AUTOLOG1 changes the IP
address in PROFILE TCPIP, DETACHES 198 and then AUTOLOGs TCPIP.

If 0591 exists I know I am on the production machine so I just DETACH
it and continue with the production startup.

Hi,

I believe CERN had an implementation of CP Global variables (perhaps some of
Dick Newson's goodies?) A "CP SET VARIABLE" command would be very useful.

Re: Simple Rexx question

2007-10-04 Thread Ian S. Worthington
It shouldn't be. It should "WTF?'

Rexx is a mighty fine language in almost every way, but its treatment of case
has been, iirc, the subject of some annoyance in previous discussions.

(NB 1 Do I get the impression that work on mainframe REXX has practically
ceased? Mooted new features have never appeared, Object Rexx has never made
it to the mainframe. It has a somewhat 'abandoned' feel to it these days.)

(NB 2 If you haven't been paying attention the OpenRexx folks have made
sterling progress and v 3.2 is expected out the end of this month. Just need
a CMS port now and I'll be really happy.)

I thought that SET PRODUCT would be a bit more flexible than just the sin
gle
GATEWAY value that I am currently using.

I also hope that IBM (Chuckie in particular) will not frown upon us using

the SET PRODUCT commands for enabling/disabling customer functions.

Maybe if the documentation (unoffical fiction as it is) were to make its
way
into some customer's hands, a requirement could be written that matches
fairly well and then be submitted to the appropriate User Groups.

It seems something worthy of requirement. The mechanism you describe has
been invented, but it sits on a shelf on the Island of Misfit Toys,
unloved, waiting for someone ... anyone ... to take an interest.

I should point out that SET PRODUCT conveniently comes with Diag 0x27C
(privclass ANY) to enable apps to find out if ENABLE or DISABLE has been
set, as well as retreive the DESCRIPTION of the product.

So, right now, yes, SET PRODUCT is the closest thing you have to a
system-wide name/value mapping function.

Re: D/R Code

The code I use is:

/* Identify which system we're running on */
'Pipe CP Q GATEWAY' ,
'| Specs word 2 1' ,
'| Var SYSNAME'

Fairly concise and seems to cover most of the possibilities.

We run a CSE complex from a single SYSRES, so the system IDs are vastly
important. AUTOLOG1 checks, and performs differently on the individual
systems, and various other home-grown tools also have system-specific
behavior. Our SYSTEM CONFIG accounts for the two paired production LPARs,
two paired test systems, and an ³other² to catch any additional CPUids that
might fall our way Such as a disaster recovery site.
