No, IPL the install system (e.g. SLES10S2 EXEC) - you see this puts an
install system into memory and on the network, but then you have access to
the affected disk (the one with the /etc/shadow that has the encrypted
root password that was forgotten/changed) - so the root password on
/dev/dasda1 is just a file system to the Linux in memory. When you
"chroot" its like warping into another dimension (of course that dimension
may need other file systems mounted to do the warping :)) Report back if
you run into that issue.

Does this make sense?

Yes, we say in the preamble "Single user mode is helpful when you need
to recover the root password".
Then we show in the example:
  Give root password for login:
  lnx4vm

Well clearly the uability testers did not complete this section
thoroughly (and neither did the author )):

So, how about this approach (can't remember if this is right for SLES 10
SP2 - it seems to change sometimes)
-) Shut down whatever is running on the user ID
-) IPL and install system (SLES10S2 EXEC on my system)
-) Get an SSH session before starting the graphical install
-) Go up to the "Activate" DASD section where you activate the root file
system with /etc
-) Go back to the SSH system
-) cat /proc/dasd/devices - you should now see your root file system as
a device (e.g. /dev/dasda)
-) mount it (e.g. mount /dev/dasda1 /mnt)
-) chroot into it (e.g. chroot /mnt)
-) change the password (e.g. passwd)
-) exit and unmount it (e.g. exit, umount /mnt)
-) Start the real Linux (IPL CMS or IPL Linux boot volume directly)

Re: DS6800 concurrent microcode updates

2009-01-23 Thread Tom Duerbusch
I don't think anyone means that the DS6800 has to be down for the two hours.

In my case, I leave all the systems up, but don't run anything critical (that
may have backout or restore processes to consider), and let IBM do their thing.

When the first controller is taken offline, we get the missing interrupts, and
I think automatic retries are suppose to happen, in which case the other
controller will be used. Then the microcode is loaded and the controller is
IML'ed. About a 75 minute process, depending on many factors. The controller
is brought online. Then the second controller is brought offline, and we get
missing interrupts. The microcode is loaded and that controller is IML'ed and
put back online.

Even if you had a total power failure, if it messes anything up, it is only 1
controller that would be affected. The other controller will be handling all
your I/Os. Not a problem unless you are doing so many I/Os that a single
controller would be the bottleneck (along with it's half of the cache).

If things are really critical, you might try:

Bringing your systems down.
Vary the controller offline.
Bring your systems up.
Load the microcode.
IML the controller
Bring the controller online.

Next weekend:

Bringing your systems down.
Vary the other controller offline.
Bring your systems up.
Load the microcode.
IML the controller
Bring the controller online.

No need for a system to be down the entire time.

But if you don't know, I would leave the systems up, with as little production
updating going on, and try it. On a supported OS, it should work just fine.

Seems I saw on one of these sites that there was some problems with the
losing of connections.

And I am not sure of a backout plan or if there is an option for
backing out.

Finally, does anyone have a time frame on how long it takes?

The general sequence is:
1. Define a HiperSocket chpid and subchannels. Give the z/VM partition
access to three of them (at least) and bring them online.
2. Add DEDICATE statements for the three subchannels to TCPIP's
directory
entry.
3. Add DEVICE/LINK/HOME/START statements to PROFILE TCPIP. The IFCONFIG

command can assist you if you're uncertain about the statements you
need.

But don't take my word for it! Take a gander at the often-ignored and
always-overlooked z/VM Connectivity book in the z/VM library. ;-)

Please note that there is an error on p.82

following command at IPL:

#cp vi vmsg 0 1

However, when I get to the end of the procedure, it asks for the root

Do I need to enter a cntrl character to get a # sign to bypass

Or - any other user that has sudo authority you can login with to change

You could also boot the install kernel, mount the proper disks, and
change the password for root that way...

You should also consider using a Linux guest as a firewall/NAT router
between the physical hipersocket and a VSWITCH or guest LAN instead of
dedicating the connection to the VM stack. Since the number of hipersockets
are limited, and setting them up is a royal PITA, a setup like that allows
more guest systems to take advantage of the connection w/o reinventing the
wheel every time, and provides significant traffic shaping and management
capabilities.

It will cost you some cycles, but it's worth considering if you need a
managed path between the guests and don't want to use an external switch
path for network performance or security reasons.

I would draw a picture of what IP addresses are where, for all network
interfaces involved (including subnet masks) and what routes are defined where,
along with default gateways. I would also try to get routing information from
the first-hop routers outside the box to complete the picture.

VSWITCH seems to be causing problems on MVS

2009-01-23 Thread Bauer, Bobby (NIH/CIT) [E]
This is really strange! We have a z9 with 4 MVS lpars and a VM lpar and a
couple of Linux guest. There is a hipersocket link between 2 of the MVS lpars,
VM and the Linux guest. There is also a vswitch running layer 3. The MVS lpars
have 2 dedicated OSAs and the VM lpar has 2 different dedicated OSAs. A couple
of days ago when I detached the vswitch in order to rebuild it for layer 2 we
lost connectivity with the 2 MVS lpars that have a hipersocket connection.
Since the Linux guest were down, I IPLed VM and connectivity to the MVS lpars
came back. I've repeated this 2 more times (off hours) with the same results.
Seems destroying the vswitch is causing a problem. A dump of TCP on the MVS
lpars doesn't show any problems.

I'm open to any suggestions. I have test time this weekend but I'm not sure
what to try.
