So if that's all there is, why would anyone bother to install z/VM 6.1?

FTPPUT expects the remote server to respond to PASV with
  227 text (d1,d2,d3,d4,p1,p2)

z/VM 5.3 FTP server responds with
  227 text d1,d2,d3,d4,p1,p2

The parentheses were added in z/VM 5.4.

Pricing didn't change, unless the price of one Value Unit changed, which I
doubt. I compared the 6.1 and 5.4 announcements. They both use Value Unit
exhibit VUE021.

Z/VM dump question

2009-10-20 Thread Mart
Hi,

I'd like to ask how can I make z/Linux dump.
I know that I can use VMDUMP tool but I want to check how stand-alone dum
p
will work.

My system is z/VM ver. 5.4 and SLES10.

Is below procedure correct?

1. Install the dump tool using the zipl command.
   for example: zipl -d /dev/dasdc1
An the take dump from z/VM Linux quest:
2. Stop all CPUs
   #cp cpu all stop
3. Store status on the IPL CPU.
   #cp store status
4. IPL the dump tool.
   #cp i 193 - 193 is DASD device
The following PSW indicates that the dump process has completed

successfully:
(64-bit) PSW: 0002 8000

5. IPL Linux guest again.

Thank you,

Mart

You could get an error from Pipelines, which would be in the Pipelines
documentation, or an error from the FTP stages. The only
documentation about the ftp stages is part of the DRPC download
package, and it doesn't list any possible errors, just the syntax for
using them. As I stated in the help file for PIPEDDR: "The FTP
stages are not part of PIPEDDR, are not officially supported by
IBM, and source code is not provided. Any errors may not be fixable."

I'm not exactly sure how the traffic is routed, but the test I'm doing
originates on the same z/VM 5.3 system (168.162.215.71) that is also the remote
destination system of the FTP PUT. I would normally think there was a firewall
or something interfering but the following series of commands work fine when
imbedded in a simple REXX exec.

In the example below, the variables are predefined with these values:
cmsid=USERA, ftpft=DDR191, ftpfm=X and cmspw=.

...
push 'QUIT'
push 'PUT' cmsid'.'ftpft'.'ftpfm cmsid'.'ftpft

push 'SENDSITE'
push 'BI'
push cmsid cmspw

Since the Rexx error that you receive from ftpput concerns passive

z/VM 6.1 G.A. targeted for this Friday, Oct 23

2009-10-20 Thread Mike Walter
In case it slipped by, the G.A. announcement for a/VM 6.1 was posted
today, see (watch for URL wrap):

http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS209-401&open&cm_mmc=5733-_-n-_-vrm_newsletter-_-10207_135548&cmibm_em=dm:0:1417348#h2-availx

Remember, z/VM has runs only on System z10 (and presumably, future
machines, too!). Part of the announcement includes:
--
z/VM V6.1 requires a new Architecture Level Set (ALS) that is available on
the:

System z10 Enterprise Class
Refer to the DEVICE2097 Preventive Service Planning (PSP) bucket for the
minimum MCL level and any required updates.

System z10 Business Class
Refer to the DEVICE2098 Preventive Service Planning (PSP) bucket for the
minimum MCL level and any required updates.

Specific processor facilities required by z/VM V6.1 can be found on the
z/VM Web site at
http://www.ibm.com/vm/zvm610/architecture/
--

And so it begins... product positioning for z/VM "single system image".

Re: CMSDDR & VMARC question

2009-10-20 Thread Henry, Bob
Is anyone from z/VM development monitoring this thread and willing to take a
look at this problem? As I said in an earlier post in answer to Bruce's
question, the remote system is z/VM 5.3.

Is the remote system z/VM or some other platform? The ftpput stage is
from z/VM development, and the source is not available for it, so I
don't know what could be wrong. I've never tried it myself to a z/VM
system.

CAVMEN Meeting on Thursday, October 22, 2009 - Road Construction Update

2009-10-20 Thread Chicago Area VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts
The fourth quarter meeting of the Chicago Area VM
(and Linux) Enthusiasts will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:

Construction work is in progress on Half Day Road
(Route 22) near the entrance to Hewitt. Three
of the four lanes are open, but there may be
delays. The Hewitt Associates 'Monument" sign
at the entrance has been removed during the
construction. There is a traffic light at the
entrance, and a "Hewitt Drive" street sign that
is suspended from cables very high above the
intersection. If you haven't been here before,
watch for the sign. If you are exiting I-94 onto
Route 22, the Hewitt entrance is West of I-94 on
the right side of Route 22. It is only 500 feet
from the point where the I-94 Southbound exit
ramp meets Route 22. Be careful not to miss it.

If possible, avoid the intersection of Half day
Road (Route 22) and Milwaukee Avenue (Route
21). The construction is causing long delays there.

Please Drive Carefully!

Attendance:

We would like to request a count of expected
attendees by the Monday before the meeting, so
that we may plan appropriately for arranging the
facilities, and for refreshments and lunch,
should one of the vendors wish to provide them.
If you are planning to attend, PLEASE send an
E-Mail by that date to
cav...@comcast.net
with a subject line of "Meeting Attendance".

This is meant to be a facilities planning aid and
should not be interpreted as a registration
requirement. If you suddenly become available at
the last minute, please feel free to attend even if you have not responded.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Final Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM z/VM Platform Update: Introducing
z/VM V6.1 - Advancing the Art of Server Virtualization

This presentation will highlight the new
functions available with z/VM V6.1, IBM's newest
version of advanced server virtualization support
for IBM System z. Building on the functionally
rich base of z/VM Version 5.4, z/VM V6.1,
previewed on July 7, 2009, further enhances the
economic attractiveness of consolidating
workloads on the mainframe. Find out how z/VM
V6.1 on IBM System z10 advances the art of
enterprise virtualization. The speaker will also
provide an overview of future z/VM support
("statements of direction") included in the z/VM V6.1 preview announcement.

The speaker will be Alan Altmark of the IBM Corporation.

10:30 AMCoffee Break

11:00 AMSecurity Zones in z/VM

In multi-tier network applications, there is
usually the concept of "demilitarized zones", or
DMZs, that each contain a set of servers. Each
DMZ is separated from others by firewalls and by
access policies to ensure that there is no
unwanted user access or flow of data. Learn in
this presentation how to properly build virtual
DMZs and to integrate virtual servers into your
existing DMZs. We will also discuss using the
RACF Security Server on z/VM to prevent a "red
zone" server from connecting to a "green zone" network or "green zone" data...

The speaker will be Alan Altmark of the IBM Corporation.

12:30 PMLunch Break

1:30 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements

1:45 PM Linux on z Update

The speaker will present a brief update of recent
developments in the Linux under z/VM area.

The speaker will be Paul Augustyniak of the IBM Corporation.

2:00 PM What makes a successful Proof of Concept for Linux on System z

Most companies begin their first foray into the
Linux on System z world by conducting a z Linux
POC. This presentation will draw upon the many
years of experience of the presenter and the dos
and dont's of a POC. Marianne will discuss how to
pick the application and other "technical" aspects.

The speaker will be Marianne Eggett of Mainline Information Systems.

3:30 PM System z Linux Proof of Concept -
Project Management Best Practices

It's an important step - so when you are ready to
move forward, make sure you're on solid ground.
From planning, to proving, to production, there
are a lot of intricate details to think about
when you are considering a Linux implementation.
In this session, Marianne Eggett summarizes
industry best practices for project management of
your IBM System z Linux Proof-of-Concept (POC).
These best practices are based on her 30 + years
