I'm not sure exactly how much credence should be given to a rather
incendiary post from an anonymous poster referencing an anonymous source.
If you would like to supply the name of your source (offline, please),
I'll happily look into it.

A few points:
- For discontinuance to be "postponed" it would have to have been
originally scheduled for earlier. At no time in the last two years have
those of us who work with the ITSO been informed of any plan to end
Redbooks. (I.e. "don't bother")
- Redbooks cover a lot of territory. It is possible that some parts of
IBM have chosen to reduce funding of residencies or Redbooks in the ITSO.
- There *are* certain Redbooks that have been re-published on a regular
basis for many years and some of those have ended their run.
- The ITSO *may* be looking to reduce the number of residencies in order
to reduce cost.
- Remember that a lot of Redbooks that are not tied to a residency.

The system comes with BFS already set up in the VMSYS filepool. From the
z/VM 5.4 TCP/IP Planning book (p.616):

"The key database file that is created must be accessible by the SSL
server. The default environment established through installation of the
z/VM deliverable provides for such access, with BFS file space (GSKSSLDB)
already allocated for maintenance of a key database. This filespace is
owned by an IBM-defined user ID (GSKADMIN) that serves as a designated key
database administrative user ID."

Stephen,

Here's what my systems have. These limits came from the starter system.
I didn't change them.

q limits for sslserv vmsys

UseridStorage Group 4K Block Limit 4K Blocks Committed Threshold

SSLSERV 21800 0-00% 100%

Ready;

q limits for gskssldb vmsys

UseridStorage Group 4K Block Limit 4K Blocks Committed Threshold

GSKSSLDB 2100026-02% 100%

Ready;

Has anyone set up the SSL server in z/VM 5.4? There are a couple of BFS
that need to be set up and I was wanting to know an approximate size,
(number of blocks) to define.

They would be:

SSLSERV - SSL server work file

GSKSSLDB - SSL key database

I would think either one would need to be very big.

Thanks,

Steve

Ps. If I sent this to the list already, I'm sorry for the repeat.

I simply don't believe it.

Too many product organizations use Redbooks as ways to get product information
out to the field in ways that are approachable and usable. Stuff they can't put
in product documentation about how the product really gets used, or how it
works with specific other products, works great as Redpieces.

Now, if someone is claiming that RedBOOKs, as things on paper, are going away, I can see that. I've been using PDFs, not paper books, for years now. But that's a mutation or an evolution of the program, not the death of the concept.

I hope you're correct Nick. Even though my job has taken me away from
VM, I've found a wealth of info regarding Windows, Unix, and
hardware/networking config in recent Redbooks.

IBM Discontinues REDBOOK Series

2010-03-06 Thread esst...@juno.com
IBM REDBOOKS have been a wealth of information for Years.
I have always directed new bees to the ABCs of MVS (all 12 Volumes).

Without naming names I have it on good authority that IBM intended to
stop developing the "REDBOOK" Series of publications. My contact at IBM, stated
that other IBMers displayed there resentment to continuing the IBM REDBOOKS.

Apparently the Bean Counters at IBM only understand numbers.
How does one put a $ Value on Intellectual Capital ?

The Discontinuance of the REDBOOK Series has been postponed to 2011.
2010 will be the last Year for any New IBM REDBOOKS.
