Re: Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM?
Being the purist, I appreciate that Linux on z can run without z/VM. However ... The value of virtualization is still not recognized in a lot of places and situations. D/R preparedness is a biggie. One D/R plan has most of your app-hosting systems run virtual. So when you bring things up on the recovery HW, the app servers actually see NO CHANGE. Ahhh... But that's just one example. And then there's what Mark Pace said: sharing. Linux is a good system and getting better all the time. But it simply cannot compete with the scalability and robustness of z/VM for sharing physical resources. And the "insertion loss" of running VM (eg: with just one guest, instead of running that guest native) is so low compared to other hypervisors. It's good that native Linux is an option, but it's rare that I would recommend it. -- R; <>< Rick Troth Velocity Software http://www.velocitysoftware.com/ On Mon, Apr 4, 2011 at 10:55, Ward, Mike S wrote: > I have a question. z196 and z/Manager (URM)
Hi We are planning for a z196 Enterprise Processor. I was wondering specifically about z/Manager. I know this is being touted as the Hub of this new Enterprise Processor. I also know that a lot of work on behalf of z/VM and z/Linux was done in this area. I understand that z/Manager contains ensembles that allow for z/VM and z/Linux workload management. It is suppose to have the look and feel like WLM for z/OS. This is something I have hoping for. Hopefully there is meat with the potatoes! What have been some of the experiences with z/Manager to date. Is it truly a Workload Manager in the way of WLM on z/OS? What have been the experiences with working with the HMC to control z/Manager? Is the HMC accessible via the network, VPN etc.? Thanks! New VSWITCH definition Best Practice
It's time for me to update my Best Practice for VSWITCH definition With the changes that were made to z/VM 6.1 for zEnterprise ensembles, but which benefit non-ensemble configurations, there's a new sheriff in town. Forget "VLAN 666". Here's what you really want to see: DEFINE VSWITCH ... VLAN AWARE NATIVE NONE This does the following: 1. Sets the VSWITCH in trunk mode 2. Requires that you explicitly authorize a guest to use one or more VLAN IDs. 3. If you don't provide an authorization, outbound traffic from the guest will be discarded. 4. No untagged frames from VLAN-aware guests will be emitted by the VSWITCH. The new "VLAN AWARE" and "NATIVE NONE" are not available on z/VM 5.4. You will have to continue with the VLAN 666 trick. VLAN and GRANT
Hi This weekend we changed the SWITCH on the Data Comm side to tag a new VLAN (581). Up to this point the switch was only set up for ACCESS switch not TRUNK with a default VLAN of 472. Now the SWITCH PORT is changed to handle TRUNKING. On my z/VM side I set up the VSWITCH to now handle VLAN tagging. Everything looks good on the switch side but when I try testing a z/Linux guest in terms of having it connect to the VSWITCH via VLAN 851 it still does not get to the Subnet pointed to by VLAN 581. I did the GRANT for this guest: SET VSWITCH VSE4DD11 GRANT E49L250D VLAN 851. What am I missing? Now I did not do anything with RACF for this do I need to allow something in RACF? Thanks! In a word - sharing. In LPAR mode you can run 1 linux per LPAR. Under VM can share the memory, CPU/IFL, DASD and run lots of linux. Re: Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM?
There is a mailing list for Linux on z >> linux-...@vm.marist.edu Both Novell (SLES) and RedHat (RHEL) can be downloaded at their respective web sites.. you'll be looking for the 's390x' binaries. You can download and use for free (respecting the various GPLs, etc).. and then purchase if you want support and access to updates, etc. There are also other flavors (e.g. CentOS) but if you likely want to stick with SLES or RHEL. Most government agencies I've worked with have been using RHEL on both the mainframe and other platforms.. but that's just from personal experience - I haven't done a survey or anything :) Usually, for ease of migration and support - you stick with the distro you use on the distributed platforms.. Hi, Jim. Yes there are free evaluation copies of Linux for z/VM available from the major vendors, plus there are "non-commercial" versions of Linux for s390Debian, Fedora, Centos, for example. I can point you in the right direction if you would like further information. Yes, the is also a Linux on S/390 mailing list that discusses running Linux on both an LPAR and as a guest of z/VM. To subscribe to the LINUX-390 discussion, send e-mail note to: lists...@vm.marist.edu In the body of the note, write only the following line SUBSCRIBE LINUX-390 your-name-here Have a good one, too. Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM?
Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM? There are rumors from those flying at 50,000 feet that we may be asked questions about Linux on z/VM. On the other hand, would it be a proper use of this forum to post the questions here or is there a Linux for z/VM list?
