Dynamic reconfiguration when IOCP says NOTAPRT for LPAR
I have specified a set of I/O devices (DASD) as NOTPART in IOCP to a particular LPAR Is there a way to alter this with dynamic reconfiguration ? Should I have had LPAR name in candidate list so I could change it later? I am tying to set up an LPAR for DR testing that only has the DASD etc that it needs for that test. The devices assigned to the LPAR would be changing very often. Any suggestions would be welcome. Ficon CTC's between LPAR's in same Box
Is there a way I can configure CTC's between LPAR's in same physical box without going out and buying hardware? I saw somewhere that one could use share CHPID's with other devices using TYPE=FC. Does this only work if going out to Ficon switch ? I do have a Ficon express 8 card with 1 unused port, Can I do anything with that ? I do have a Ficon card with 2 currently unused ports port on it. Can this be used to join the LPAR's together by cabling 1 port to the other. All this is to create a z/VM 6.1 cse with 2 LPARs. - This email has been scanned for all known viruses by the MessageLabs Email Security Service and the Macro 4 internal virus protection system. .

Re: Guest Lan and VSWITCH
Hello Dave, According to z/VM 5.4 Connectivity manual IPv6 Considerations When planning to deploy an IPv6 virtual switch configuration that will have external connectivity, the virtual switch must operate in Ethernet mode. Ethernet mode is supported by TCP/IP for z/VM, zLinux and DIAG X'2A8'. For more information on DIAG X'2A8' see z/VM: CP Programming Services. Ethernet mode is not supported by z/OS which precludes it from this configuration. Configurations requiring z/OS and IPv6 can deploy an IP mode guest LAN with a router virtual machine providing external connectivity through the Ethernet mode virtual switch or directly through an OSA-Express feature (dedicated device). The z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center (December 2008 edition) is available on an IBM Web site: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zvm/v5r4/index.jsp <http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zvm/v5r4/index.jsp> . If you have forgotten what an information is, read on. z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center - December 2008 IBM publishes the z/VM documentation in an information center using the IBM Eclipse Help System framework. Publishing in an information center is in addition to z/VM product documentation published in BookManager and PDF format and available through the z/VM Collection and z/VM Internet Library. The content of the z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center (information for the z/VM base and optional features) is identical to that in the traditional BookManager and PDF formats; however, the presentation might differ to some degree. Persistant Flashcopy
I have been playing with Persistant Flashcopy that was introduced to z/VM with APAR VM64449. Great fun! I have established flashcopy relationships between two packs A1 and B1 and have specified that I want to keep label of target volume so I don't get duplicate volumes. FLASHCOPY ESTABLIST SOURCE AAA TARGET BBB LABEL B1 CHGRECORD This is fine. When I do RESYNC to update change from SOURCE to TARGET , it overwrites label of TARGET volume. This is not what I need. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong ? Hi Crispin, Take a look at z/VM 5.4 APAR VM64449. It expands the existing Class B FLASHCopy command to allow privileged users to establish and manage Persistent Flashcopy relationships. (The existing command creates point-in-time copies, where the relationships are destroyed as soon as the copy completes.) If I understand what you're looking for, it would be a persistent relationship with change recording enabled (this is an option on FLASHCopy ESTABLISH), followed by periodic FLASHCopy RESYNC commands to bring the target up to the state of the current source, since the last Flashcopy command was issued. There is also a Class B Query command that lets you interrogate the state of all your Flashcopy relationships, beyond the existing command (Class G Query Virtual) that queries those relationships inside a virtual machine. Incremental Flashcopy backups.
Am I missing something ! Under z/OS I can do incremental copies of packs on our DS6800. I can't seem to find the same function under z/VM. Re: DS6800 concurrent microcode updates
THE sea.jar IS THE ONLY ONE WHERE you need to have system down. That means about 1.5 hours out. As each processor is updated seperatly , then the power failure scenario does not occur. I suggest that for the first time, you get everybody off BUT don't shut system and see what happens. Just have bare VM and VSE running. I see the SEA.JAR that I believe will update the microcode in the DS6800, I see the DS6800STorageManager_WIN_5.2.200.1678.zip (for the Windows version of Storage Manager), and DSCLI_5.2.2.411.tar.gz and DSCLI_5.2.2.411.zip which I thought was the Data Storage Command Line interface. Seems I saw on one of these sites that there was some problems with the losing of connections. And I am not sure of a backout plan or if there is an option for backing out. z/OS systems on a z9 under z/VM 5.3

SDSF in z/OS under z/VM
This was initially raised under IBMMAIN. when we have a z/OS 1.9 (or 1.8) system in an LPAR with zIIP and zAAp processors. SDSF shows the amount of usage on the DA panel. SDSF DA Z27 ZOS18PAG0 CPU/L/Z 16/ 14/ 0 LINE 1-1 (1) If I am running z/OS 1.9 (OR 1.8) under z/VM 5.3 with zIIP and zAAP processors the SDSF panel shows SDSF DA Z90 ZOS19PAG0 CPU 11 Which is what I would expect if the processors were not there. If I go right on DA display I can see that the zIIP and zAAP processors are being used as the zAAP-USE% changes. The SDSF manual states: CPUFMT (LONG) | (SHORT)| CPUFMT=LONG | SHORT | ||___| Specifies whether SDSF displays the MVS, LPAR and zAAP views of CPU busy on the title line of the DA panel, or only the MVS view. The LPAR and zAAP views require RMF. LONG indicates that all values are displayed. The LPAR view is shown only when in LPAR mode. The zAAP view is shown only when a zAAP is defined and the system is in LPAR-mode.SHORT indicates that only the MVS view is shown. The MVS view (the first value on the title line) is a better indicator of a CPU bottleneck. The LPAR view (the second value, if present) takes into account several states related to PR/SM. The zAAP view (the third value, if present) shows usage of the zSeries Application Assist Processor. ___ | CTITLE (ASIS) | (UPPER) | CTITLE= ASIS | UPPER | Is there a way I can make the z/OS system think its in LPAR mode ? I have had the following response: the UNDER VM is the key. The processor utilization numbers in the header are obtained from the ERBSMFI API. The "L". "Z", and the zIIP utilization (which SDSF does not display) are calculated from hardware supplied data (via DIAGNOSE 204). DIAGNOSE 204 is NOT supported under VM. If I do a CP QUERY DIAGNOSE 204 , it says its there. Is there some thing else I need to do to make this work ? I have been following all this with great interest and still have questions. If one has a z9 that is zIIP and zAAp capable, then zVM5.3 can emulate these processors. If z9 actually has these processors, can z/OS under z/VM 5.3 actually use them ?. Any idea what the overhead is likely to be.
