DynIO does not have the construct of NOTPART (or a null partition) on
either the chpid or iodevice commands, partitions are explicit.
Assuming the chpid is shared or spanned, see CP MODify ADD_partition
for chpids or ADD PAR for iodevice.

Dynamic reconfiguration when IOCP says NOTAPRT for LPAR

2011-07-26 Thread Crispin Hugo
I have specified a set of I/O devices (DASD) as NOTPART in IOCP to a
particular LPAR

Is there a way to alter this with dynamic reconfiguration ?

Should I have had LPAR name in candidate list so I could change it
later?

I am tying to set up an LPAR for DR testing that only has the DASD etc
that it needs for that test. The devices assigned to the LPAR would be
changing very often.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Ficon CTC's between LPAR's in same Box

2011-07-21 Thread Crispin Hugo
Don't worry, these are not all for z/VM.
I also need them for z/VSE and z/OS .
We need to connect VTAM all over the place and Enterprise Extender is
only available on z/OS.

I also want all the LPAR's to be able to be used for any operating
system I throw at it.
Thanks for the warning !!

In a Single System Image cluster, you have to have fully interconnected
ISFC links. No hops. Redundancy is provided by allowing multiple ISFC
links between any pair of systems.

Ficon CTC's between LPAR's in same Box

2011-07-18 Thread Crispin Hugo
Is there a way I can configure CTC's between LPAR's in same physical box
without going out and buying hardware?

I saw somewhere that one could use share CHPID's with other devices
using TYPE=FC. Does this only work if going out to Ficon switch ?

I do have a Ficon express 8 card with 1 unused port, Can I do anything
with that ?

I do have a Ficon card with 2 currently unused ports port on it. Can
this be used to join the LPAR's together by cabling 1 port to the other.

All this is to create a z/VM 6.1 cse with 2 LPARs.

Hi, Crispin.

OK, I didn't know that, thanks. So yes, you will need to create a guest
LAN to attach your z/OS guests to, and then route that guest LAN over to

a VSWITCH that provides network access outside of the VM box. You might
consider using the VM tcp/ip server for the router function.

Re: Guest Lan and VSWITCH

2010-10-12 Thread Crispin Hugo
Hello Dave,
According to z/VM 5.4 Connectivity manual

IPv6 Considerations When planning to deploy an IPv6 virtual switch
configuration that will have external connectivity, the virtual switch
must operate in Ethernet mode. Ethernet mode is supported by TCP/IP for
z/VM, zLinux and DIAG X'2A8'. For more information on DIAG X'2A8' see
z/VM: CP Programming Services. Ethernet mode is not supported by z/OS
which precludes it from this configuration. Configurations requiring
z/OS and IPv6 can deploy an IP mode guest LAN with a router virtual
machine providing external connectivity through the Ethernet mode
virtual switch or directly through an OSA-Express feature (dedicated
device).

Hi, Crispin.

No, I don't believe you can connect a guest LAN to az VSWITCH with using

virtual machine acting as a router.

Are you sure that IPv6 requires the VSWITCH to be in ETHERNET mode?

Guest Lan and VSWITCH

2010-10-12 Thread Crispin Hugo
Can I connect/attach a guest LAN to a VSWITCH without routing? If so,
HOW

I want to connect 4-5 z/OS systems using IPV4 and IPV6 to each other and
to the outer world. I believe that IPV6 requires ETHERNET on VSWICTH but
z/OS don't like that and needs to use Guest LAN. Guest LAN don't talk
to outside world without being routed.

VLAN and IPV6 and z/OS confusion

2010-10-06 Thread Crispin Hugo
I am trying to understand if what I propose is possible:

I want a VLAN under z/VM 5.4 to support IPV for 8-9 z/OS systems that
will need access to some PC's running IPV6 connected to our core switch.

I believe I can do this with

CP DEFINE LAN M4PVLAN TYPE QDIO IP
And the following in each z/OS system

CP DEFINE NIC vdev QDIO'
CP COUPLE vdev TO SYSTEM M4PVLAN'

What I am having problems with is how to 'attach' a real OSA to VLAN
I am also unclear on what for ROUTE in z/OS TCPIP

Hi Crispin,

The intent was to prevent CP-owned volumes from being the TARGET of a
FlashCopy relationship, as it means there's another "writer" of data to
the pack that CP will be using and Bad Things will surely result. If
your pack is a SOURCE in the FlashCopy relationship, then I suspect we
would throw a cautionary message out at IPL and let the system operator
decide whether to ignore it or withdraw the relationship. If that is
not happening, then it sounds like a service call to us is warranted.

I was trying to IPL a system that the RES pack was the SOURCE and not
the TARGET. This caused a hard wait which I think is a bit harsh.

I can't see why CP would object either. It's a real pain for no apparent
reason

Maybe your 5.4 HELP isn't in production or something?

HELP HCP9051W

HCP9051W FlashCopy relations were found in CP-OWNED, non-PERM space.

Relations will be withdrawn.

Explanation: CP has detected PAGE, SPOOL, DRCT, PARM, TEMP,
Checkpoint,
or
Warmstart extents within an existing persistent FlashCopy
relationship.

Of course, FlashCopy relations are illegal in most countries of the
world
(still legal in 5 states in the US), so it's a Bad Thing. (Those should

be FlashCopy *relationships*.)

I think CP's real complaint is that the extents are the *target* of a
persistent FlashCopy relationship. (If it's a source, I don't know why
CP
would care.)

Flashcopy Relationships and CP Owned packs.

2009-04-30 Thread Crispin Hugo
Can anyone explain why it is thought to be a bad idea to form Flashcopy
relationships with CP owned disks. As I found out this morning , it
cause hard wait of z/VM ! I want to have a Flashcopy relationship of
P30RES for backup as it only take couple of second to do compared to 3
minutes with full flashcopy.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening:

The z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center on the Internet has been updated to
include the latest product documentation for the recent release of z/VM
V5R4.0 service and feature enhancements. The z/VM V5R4.0 Information
Center (December 2008 edition) is available on an IBM Web site:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zvm/v5r4/index.jsp
<http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zvm/v5r4/index.jsp> . If you
have a comment or if you experience any problems using the information
center, please use the "Contact z/VM" link at the top or bottom of the
page in question.

If you have forgotten what an information is, read on.

z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center - December 2008

IBM publishes the z/VM documentation in an information center using the
IBM Eclipse Help System framework. Publishing in an information center
is in addition to z/VM product documentation published in BookManager
and PDF format and available through the z/VM Collection and z/VM
Internet Library. The content of the z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center
(information for the z/VM base and optional features) is identical to
that in the traditional BookManager and PDF formats; however, the
presentation might differ to some degree.

Information centers provide a new mechanism for delivering product
documentation. Advantages of information centers are:

-- Content is indexed by Google and other internet search engines to
help locate information more easily.

-- Custom searches can be created that include only the information you
need for a particular task or job role.

Persistant Flashcopy

2009-03-18 Thread Crispin Hugo
I have been playing with Persistant Flashcopy that was introduced to
z/VM with APAR VM64449. Great fun!

I have established flashcopy relationships between two packs A1 and
B1 and have specified that I want to keep label of target volume so
I don't get duplicate volumes.

FLASHCOPY ESTABLIST SOURCE AAA TARGET BBB LABEL B1 CHGRECORD

This is fine. When I do RESYNC to update change from SOURCE to TARGET ,
it overwrites label of TARGET volume. This is not what I need. Any
suggestions as to what I am doing wrong ?

Hi Crispin,

Take a look at z/VM 5.4 APAR VM64449. It expands the existing Class B
FLASHCopy command to allow privileged users to establish and manage
Persistent Flashcopy relationships. (The existing command creates
point-in-time copies, where the relationships are destroyed as soon as
the copy completes.) If I understand what you're looking for, it would
be a persistent relationship with change recording enabled (this is an
option on FLASHCopy ESTABLISH), followed by periodic FLASHCopy RESYNC
commands to bring the target up to the state of the current source,
since the last Flashcopy command was issued.

There is also a Class B Query command that lets you interrogate the
state of all your Flashcopy relationships, beyond the existing command
(Class G Query Virtual) that queries those relationships inside a
virtual machine.

Regards,
   Eric

2009-01-23 Thread Crispin Hugo
THE sea.jar IS THE ONLY ONE WHERE you need to have system down. That means
about 1.5 hours out. As each processor is updated seperatly , then the power
failure scenario does not occur.
I suggest that for the first time, you get everybody off BUT don't shut
system and see what happens. Just have bare VM and VSE running.

Thank you for the info. I am on both z/VM 5.3 and z/VSE 4.1.2. I tried to
wire the two racks to all have a path if we lost
Full connection.
It is the two hours that worry me. I get Tuesday nights here at the
Hospital. And as long it works.
So what is your backup plan? What happens if you get a power failure in the
middle of the update?
Yea, I know UPS but I have to plan for worst case. Say in your best
Germany accent 'WE WILL NOT FAIL!' (sorry Martin)
Crispin, you have indicated the 3 updates. I see the SEA.JAR that I believe
will update the microcode in the DS6800,
I see the DS6800STorageManager_WIN_5.2.200.1678.zip (for the Windows version
of Storage Manager), and
DSCLI_5.2.2.411.tar.gz and DSCLI_5.2.2.411.zip which I thought was the Data
Storage Command Line interface.
Are these the three that you updates you are talking about?
Because it would be ok to get the SEA.JAR done and the do the Windows
Storage Manager as the system runs.

Hello Everyone,

I am looking into updating the DS6800 to Bundle 6.2.2.85 (ZIP file).
We are a z890 with 4 ficon connections to two racks. Each rack has is
cross connected to the Ficon connections.

I was wondering about how well the actual concurrent update works in
the real world.

The update indicates that it will drop the first connection, reconnect,
drop the second connection and reconnect.
Seems I saw on one of these sites that there was some problems with the
losing of connections.

And I am not sure of a backout plan or if there is an option for
backing out.

Finally, does anyone have a time frame on how long it takes?

PERFSVM and number of CPU's

2008-02-04 Thread Crispin Hugo

PERFSVM shows that we have 4 CPU's 2 CP , 1 ZAAP and 1 ZIIP. All this is
true.

On Report FCX225 'System Performance Summary by Time' it appears to show
the % busy as if we had 4 CP's and not 2.

All day long the CPU Load form screen 1 shows 60-70% busy on the 2 CP's but
the above report shows ½ that value. How can I get FCX225 to ignore ZAAP and
ZIIP or tell is we only have 2 CP'sd

Untrue. VM supports a subset of DIAGNOSE 204 capabilities. Apparently
that subset is not sufficient to make SDSF happy. There are no
configuration settings you can use to change it. (Just make sure you are
up to date on VM service.)

In general, z/OS takes no notice that it is running on VM. It just tries
to Do Something and then reacts to a failure. So, there's no
pretend-you're-in-an-LPAR setting.

z/OS systems on a z9 under z/VM 5.3

2008-01-25 Thread Crispin Hugo
I am trying to get definitive answer as to what releases on z/OS will run on
a z9 using z/VM.

The only table I can find

http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/support/zos_server_support
.html
<http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/support/zos_server_suppor
t.html>

says that oldest release is z/OS 1.4. It also says OS 2.1.0 won't run but I
know it does. (As I am logged onto it at the moment!) . z/OS 1.3 runs as
well.

How about z/OS 1.2 or z/OS 1.1

SDSF in z/OS under z/VM

2008-01-25 Thread Crispin Hugo
This was initially raised under IBMMAIN.

when we have a z/OS 1.9 (or 1.8) system in an LPAR with zIIP and zAAp
processors. SDSF shows the amount of usage on the DA panel.

SDSF DA Z27 ZOS18PAG0 CPU/L/Z 16/ 14/ 0 LINE 1-1 (1)

If I am running z/OS 1.9 (OR 1.8) under z/VM 5.3 with zIIP and zAAP
processors the SDSF panel shows

SDSF DA Z90 ZOS19PAG0 CPU 11

Which is what I would expect if the processors were not there.

If I go right on DA display I can see that the zIIP and zAAP processors are
being used as the zAAP-USE% changes.

The SDSF manual states:

CPUFMT (LONG) | (SHORT)| CPUFMT=LONG | SHORT |

  ||___|

Specifies whether SDSF displays the MVS, LPAR and zAAP views of CPU busy on
the title line of the DA panel, or only the MVS view. The LPAR and zAAP
views require RMF.

LONG indicates that all values are displayed. The LPAR view is shown
only when in LPAR mode. The zAAP view is shown only when a zAAP is defined
and the system is in LPAR-mode.SHORT indicates that only the MVS view
is shown. The MVS view (the first value on the title line) is a better
indicator of a CPU bottleneck. The LPAR view (the second value, if present)
takes into account several states related to PR/SM. The zAAP view (the third
value, if present) shows usage of the zSeries Application Assist Processor.

   ___

  | CTITLE (ASIS) | (UPPER) | CTITLE= ASIS | UPPER |

Is there a way I can make the z/OS system think its in LPAR mode ?

I have had the following response:

the UNDER VM is the key. The processor utilization numbers in the header
are obtained from the ERBSMFI API. The "L". "Z", and the zIIP utilization
(which SDSF does not display) are calculated from hardware supplied data
(via DIAGNOSE 204). DIAGNOSE 204 is NOT supported under VM.

If I do a CP QUERY DIAGNOSE 204 , it says its there. Is there some thing
else I need to do to make this work ?

Anybody out there using DS6800 with z/VM 5.2 or 5.3 . We are having problems
that anytime we update the software on DS6800, it takes out z/VM. There are
4 FICON channels. DS6800 disables 2 at a time as it does upgrade. VM can't
seem to cope with this ?

Re: z/VM - z9 and zAAP

2007-03-14 Thread Crispin Hugo

I have been following all this with great interest and still have
questions.

If one has a z9 that is zIIP and zAAp capable, then zVM5.3 can emulate these
processors. If z9 actually has these processors, can z/OS under z/VM 5.3
actually use them ?. Any idea what the overhead is likely to be.

We used an outside vendor for our remote tape drives. Make sure you pay
attention to the MITIME setting for drives and your telecommunications group
to the lines to make sure that they are running and at the agreed speeds.
