I am not too z/VM literate. However, sftp is a part of SSH (which is not SSL
either). It is totally separate and distinct from FTP. FTPS (note the S is on
the back, not front) is normal FTP over an SSL encrypted tunnel. And it is not
sftp either.

How about that. It is there, just like you said.
I kept looking for REXEC(D) in the Network Service Configuration panel.
Then opening port 512 in the firewall of the Linux machine.

And then adding the client machine (VM) to HOSTNAMES on Linux solved the
security problem.

However, I didn't have to install anything. tcpd was already there in SLES 11
SP 1. But that could have been due to the "patterns" I selected at install
time.

So everything is working finefor now.

I've done some Linux searches for how to dumb down sshd (i.e. to allow

Re: z/VM network setup

2011-07-15 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
OSA 3 cards are funny in the way they activate a port, the best I can tell is
you define the CHPID, CONTROL UNIT, and DECIVICES without regard for the
specific port. The Port is determined by the TCPIP Device and Link statement or
the VSWITCH RDEV statement.
Your question is difficult to answer it is totally dependent on the Switch it
is connected to. If you make sure the switch port your OSA is connected to is
actually defined as a "switchport" then your OSA will tell the switch what IP
or MAC addresses it has and the switch will tell others in the network.
If you want to use ARP Takeover then connect two OSA3 Ports, on separate
CHPID's, to separate switch ports. And define an RDEV address and port, for
each OSA port, on the VSWITCH define statement.

Re: Dynamic Activation of New IODF

2011-06-07 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
Be careful an IODF is different than the IOCDS for HSA.
An IODF is a file that gets put on your PARM disk and is referenced in your
SYSTEM CONFIG file.
There are people here that can fill in the blanks, but if you have a z/OS LPAR
on the same box as the z/VM LPAR let z/OS handle changes and z/VM will
automatically pick them up with Restrictions when it comes to deleting devices,
Control Units, and Channels

Subject: Dynamic Activation of New IODF

Hi Folks,

For many (many) years, when it comes to managing the IOCDS I simply
hand-create an IOCP file, use IOCP with WRTAx to store it, and do a POR to load
it. If the changes are needed immediately, I use CP commands to manually
define the new hardware.

Our z/OS guys want to manage the IOCDS and be able to dynamically activate an
entirely new IODF file (created either on their system or using VM's HCM/HCD).
I'm unclear as to when/how the changed IODF file becomes dynamically available
to the running z/VM system. Let's say I store the new IODF using IOCP with
WRTAx to store it, and then execute SET IOCDS_Active to mark it as the active
IOCDS - according to the doc for SET IOCDS_Active this simply marks the IOCDS
as active for the NEXT POR (and write-protects it) - but it doesn't look like
the changes in the new IOCDS are reflected to the running z/VM system until a
POR occurs.

What am I missing here? Is it even possible to store a new IOCDS, mark it as
active for the next POR AND have CP add/change/delete IO definitions by
comparing the prior IOCDS with the newly activated one?

No We do not have a VM system over at the new site and we had an MVS system
Dump the VM volumes from location A and FTP/transfer them to location B where
an MVS system restored them for us.

Today we finally got console access and tried to LOAD the volume we thought had
the SAIPL deck on it.
This is when we got the Error.
we are trying to reverse the transfer now to see if we can IPL under a VM
system.

RIP and ARP Takeover on the same OSA Port?

Can you have a RIP2 Network configuration using MPROUTE on zVM 6.1 and an ARP

INTVM?

We see the IP Addresses for the zLinux on the OSA but the network people say
they don't see the IP Addresses associated with the OSA MAC address

Re: z/VM RedHat Virtual Machine Memory abend

2011-04-20 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
Well that may be a problem VM always needs a little XSTORE unlike MVS and
because you are trying to allocate a guest with more memory than you have Real
Memory to support than VM will need someplace to Swap. How many Paging volumes
do you have and what are their sizes.

Also don't think that a WAS server on a zSeries box will need that much
Storage. I would start him off with 32 GB maybe but give him some VDISK SWAP
Space.

Other s on this List can help with that and there is a Redpaper on setting up
WebSphere on zLinux I attached it here, but if it doesn't make it search for
Linux on IBM zSeries and S/390: z/VM Configuration for WebSphere Deployments

I´m new to Linux on z and we are conducting a POC test of Linux Red Hat with

If linux virtual machine is defined with 64G in directory we got an abend

2 - Is this a linux s390x bug or Red Hat distribution?
3 - How can I circunvent this so we can continue with POC (Proof Of Concept)?

Thanks in advance for all hints and tips about.

Is there an additional z/VM charge when running Linux in an IFL? We
already have z/VM 5.4 on a z/10.

Just curious. Been out of the loop on licensing charges for a while.

It should show Connect rather than Active
You have started the connection on the VM side, make sure the corresponding CTC
on the MVS side is defined to MVS as BCTC if using ESCON and then start the MVS
Line
Also make sure that the RSCS definition for the JES NODE name matches and the
buffer is the same side on both sides.

Are you using the same or New Network connections to the network. Make sure the
two OSA ports are not cross connected at the switch. If they are TRUNC'd
together then you will have routing issues.

Just get a new set of IP's to test with on the new box, and get your network
and firewall people involved.

Greetings,

A couple of days ago we tried to migrate from our current CPU (Z800 - Model
2066) to a z9BC Mode R07 (2096).

We had this new machine for a couple of weeks and we created a copy of our z/VM
5.4 system on it (XXXRES = 540RES, XXXPAG = 540PAGetc...). I was able to test
z/VM 5.4 and TCP/IP on it and it worked fine given that we were assigned new IP
addresses for it. We have 2 TCP/IP stacks, one for our use, the other for the
clients. For the client, on our production machine we use VIPA/MPROUTE.

We could not test VIPA/MPROUTE on the new machine but static routing worked
fine. We tried the OSA card in QDIO and non-QDIO mode and no problems.
Connectivity for both us and the client.

Come migration time however, we could not get the VIPA/MPROUTE functionality
working. I could not ping from within the mainframe to anything beyond the OSA
card. Tried both QDIO and non-QDIO mode.
Our TCP/IP stack, no problems.

We had to back out and now we have to try to set up a test VIPA/MROUTE setup
and try it on the new machine. Waiting on the telecom architect for this.

No changes to the configuration files were done (except for QDIO in the PROFILE
TCPIP, but the same configuration files for non-QDIO).

Any clues what could have gone wrong?

Thanks,

Mike Horlick

Re: HCM/HCD from IOCP

2010-11-11 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
When VM is using an IODF and MVS is on the box doesn't the changes show up in
VM when the IODF is activated in HCD?

I though the Dynamic commands in VM only needed to happen if you are using an
IOCDS and IOCP to maintain the HW.

When the Hardware Configuration(HAS) matches the loaded IOCDS and the SET
IOCDS_ACTIVE Ax command is issued Then you get a good RC If they do not match
then you get an error.

1. Just get, via FTP, emulator upload, sneaker net, or whatever, the IOCP
source from whoever maintains it,
2. Make your changes and send it back to them.
3. When they process it through HCD it will produce a production IODF file
which can then be exported as a sequential file back to you.
4. Then you just load it onto you parm disk and follow the dynamic
reconfig process given in SET IOCDS ACTIVE in CP COMMANDS.

We have new z196 boxes being installed that will have VM only and no z/OS.
z/OS folks have been doing our i/o gens for many years.
They tell me that they can write the new IOCDS from z/OS but will be unable to

Is this correct? Is there anyway to do a dynamic gen if we want them to keep

Subject: Tape Commands

Does anyone know of a VMTAPE command, or commands, that can be used to change a
tape in an IBM VTS from SCRATCH status to SAVED and assign ownership to a user?
The CATALOG command does not seem to work:

Sm vmtape catalog I00446 retpd 10 user joeuser
VMTCAT052E Volume 'I00446' is a 0002 SCRATCH tape.
VMTBUF0161I CATALOG completion code=28.

A bit about the configuration.

The tape is in an IBM VTS which is shared by three systems - MVS, VM, and TPF.
MVS and VM share the TMC which, of necessity, is owned by MVS.
TPF knows nothing about the TMS and wants to remain ignorant.

The tape in question was created by TPF, using the native VTS commands for
mounting a scratch tape.. Currently, both VM and MVS think that the tape is
SCRATCH while the VTS knows better. This is evident if I try to mount the tape
by volser:

Vmtape mount i00446 181
VMTRMS945I Volume I00446 in RMS location VMSYSATL is NOT SCRATCH which
conflicts with the TMC, rejecting.
VMTMNT051T Mount I00446 0181 canceled by VMTAPE.
VMTBUF016I MOUNT completion code=100.

I know that it is possible to submit jobs to MVS to change the status from
scratch to saved and to catalog tapes. It would be nicer if it could be done
from VM - sometimes the submitted jobs languish in the JES queue for a long
time.

The OSA devices need to be added to TCPIP, 3 at a time. Add three OSA devices,
like A000-A002 to the TCPIP directory.
IPWIZARD just takes your input and creates a TCP/IP configuration file on
TCPMAINT's 198 disk.
You then need to AUTOLOG TCPIP and verify that you can get out to the real
world.

It has been a long time since I used IPWIZARD you can send the Prompt and your

Mark, it is easy.

On first level, define one Virtual CTC (FCTC, SCTC) into TCPIP (or another
capable machine) to connect to second level VM.

On second level VM, define and couple the Virtual CTC to first level TCPIP
before his IPL (COMMAND into Directory is a good place to set it).
After the IPL, DEDICATE the CTC (the second level thinks it is a REAL CTC) to
his TCPIP machine.
Done, you have the two TCPIPs connected by CTCs...

Work fine also for VTAM machines, RSCS, PVM, zOS and so long...

addresses to the OSA

If you are using a VSWITCH enter the command Q VSWITCH switch name DETAIL and
paste the response here.

Also , if you are using a VSWITCH did you authorize the client (VM user ID)
access to the vswitch.

Use Putty to connect to 172.17.71.121
When prompted for the user ID enter root
And when prompted for the password enter the password you supplied when you
configured the client.

Putty can be downloaded from many places try here

Why not SP3? Save yourself some work later. Or even better - 11 SP1.

Ext3 will be the default in 11. It's worked fine for us. I don't think you'd
want to use ext2 and lose the journaling. Reiser has had issues in the past (
I think it ate at least one persons files) and there is uncertainty about its

Hello Fellow Listers;
In need of some help with z/VM and TCPIP for z/OS guest.
Here's the backgroung:

1) When running 5 z/OS LPARs the z/OS systems use the same OSA address,
such as 7D0 but have different IP addresses in their IP Parms. This works and
has worked well for a long period of time here.

2) We now need to have three z/OS guest machines up and running under z/VM
with full IP capability.
My communication wiz guy has been in touch with IBM and has been told that you
have to set the OSA up that way under z/VM too.
How can I dedicate 7E0-7E2 to three guest at one time?
It sounds like a communications disconnect to me, but what do I know.
At current time, I have each z/OS guest with his own triplet of unique OSA
addresses. Each one will work fine UNTIL they are all up and running, at which
time, we start seeing "console hangs" and what appears to be machine lockups.
Some times they will eventually clear themselves, sometimes not. And it
rotates as to which z/OS guest system hangs.
Thanks in advance.

The change is that we add xstor 1GB and the others are same.
we reduced the number of ESCON Channel from 16 to 8 and now channel busy is
around 50%~70%.

We are sharing DASD among 5 OS/390 Virtual Machines by Using Virtual
Reserve/Release(MWV Option for MDISK) with SET SHARED ON option in SYSTEM
CONFIG.
I read 'CP pllaning and admin guide and it says like the below.

*When to Use Concurrent Virtual and Real Reserve/Release
In general, you should use concurrent virtual and real reserve/release when you
need to share DASD among many virtual machines and other systems. Do not use
this method when you need to share DASD only among virtual machines, because
the CP overhead is much greater than if you use virtual reserve/release.

If I changed the option to 'SET SHARED OFF', can it reduce CP overhead between
VM Guest OS?
and is it safe to change this option by SET command while system is running?

3) three OS/390 guests are coupled by Sysplex(VCFLINK under z/VM) thru CF guest
4) Sysplex(XCF) is used for only GRS and Tape sharing. MIA is used before
migration
5) GRS was not used befor migration

* Problem Symptom
=> During night time, batch job workload on SE02 was taking too long and SE02
Guest system
has high CPU usage(Specially Supervisor CPU% is high around 32% and Emulated
CPU% is 35%) and I/O wait(12%) by performance toolkit.
=> By monitoring in OS/390(SE02), CPU Usage of MASTER, GRS, CATALOG task is
high. therefore batch job is hard to get CPU resource.
=> CF Guest user has only 1% of CPU utilization.
=> batch job use DASD and Tape devices.

could it be caused by VM side or OS/390?
What do we need to check more to find what is root cause and to fix this
problem?

OSA 3 devices require the PORTNUM option on the VM Link and Device Statement

Are you using a VSWITCH to connect your Linux images or are you using a direct
connect method.

Subject: Odd OSA Express3 behaviour - maybe

Friday we migrated from a z9 with OSA Express2 adapters to a z10 with OSA
Express-3 adapters. Since then we have had odd behavior on a Linux (SLES-11)
server running under z/VM 5.4. When a customer tries to FTP data to us, they
log in with problem, but when they do the put, they will either time out, or
they will wait for 2 to 3 minutes before the transfer begins. I've verified
this behavior by FTPing from my PC at home. I've checked with our
network/firewall guy and he says nothing has been changed/modified over the
weekend. The only thing I can bring it back to is the push/pull of the z9 to
a z10 and the OSA adapters. The old OSA express2 where 2 ports 2 chpids. The
OSA express3 are 2 ports 1 chpid.

Linux is connected to a vswitch as is z/VM TCPIP.

If on my PC client I enter the command
ftp> epsv
EPSV/EPRT on IPv4 off.

Then there is no pause at all when I issue the put command. I've asked the
customer to add this command to his FTP to see if it clears the problem.

Does anyone have an idea if the change from OSA2 to OSA3 could actually be
causing this behavior?

Note that setting SMSG to IUCV doesn't help you... RSCS replies with MSG so
that's what you're trying to capture.

There is a real nice EXEC on the VM Download page called GETRSCS. It
does what you need and works well.

Thank you,

I am sending an SMSG request to RSCS and want to capture the output in a
PIPE to parse and output to the console.

I have been using the STARMSG stage, but I don't seem to be getting the
data into the stream after the command is sent to RSCS

Re: VM:Account & MAINT's 123 disk

2009-11-16 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
Make sure it is a LINK to MAINT’s 123 as 1A0 RR
 LINK MAINT 123 1A0 RR

Verify the name in the VMACCT CONFIG file on VMACCT 191 you should see a
statement like this toward the top
DIRECT 1A0 540RES
If yours does not say 540RES than you need to change it to match the VOLSER of
where the ONLINE directory is.

Oops -- I saw CA and then just assumed it was the directory management product
you were using.. don't do an MW link for VMACCT! Not sure exactly why it
wants to read the object directory... but a readonly should suffice.

Sorry!

I've tried linking instead to DirMaint's 123 link and got the same result. I'm

Subject: Shared DASD across multiple VM lpars

We have a growing VM/Linux environment with currently about 75 linux guests
spread across three VM lpars. All DASD is defined as shared. All of the
linux guests have been defined as TCPIP Layer 2; so that we can easily move
guests between lpars for performance/maintenance reasons. Each guests has
unique mini-disks for the linux 191 and DASD swap spaces. Is it advisable
to share the full volumes that these mini-disks reside on, across VM lpars;
assuming of course, that a linux guest is completely shutdown and logged
off of one lpar before it is restarted on another ?
