I agree. The bookshelf search is something that I use all the time as
well. I can't seem to get similar search results using the other
documentation media.

I really like the ability to search every book on the bookshelf for the
occurrence of what I'm looking up. I've been known to search the older
versions first if the latest versions are only available in PDF (DB2 for
z/VM books in particular). Once I narrow down the search, then I'll go
to the latest version of the book to find the current information.

IMO, that's one of the things that has made the IBM documentation so
much more user-friendly than what is supplied by other vendors.

In order to reduce expenses, reduce the amount of time it takes to
produce
softcopy documentation, and eliminate dependencies on
soon-to-be-unsupported internal tools (nothing to do with BookManager
READ
software), we are thinking about eliminating BOOK (.boo) files from z/VM

softcopy production.

The z/VM Information Center and PDF files would still be produced.

Does this create a hardship for anyone? If not, no need to speak up.

yes, details please. If you prefer to respond offline, feel free.

Re: Multiple z/OS under z/VM =xSYSTEM

2010-06-17 Thread Jonathan R Nolting

First, I would not give 8 virtual CPUs for each z/OS guest but rather start
with 2 VCPUs and see if the workload demands more. If z/VM only has 8
physical CPUs, you seem to have created a 8:1 virtual/real CPU ratio which
could cause significant overhead and possible thrashing.

Does z/VM 5.3 have expanded storage allocated as a fast paging device
probably allocate 2GB for ES.

Is that DASD shared among all z/OS guests? If so, could you show a small
sample of how some disks are defined across the guests?

I logged on z/VM userid to see OS/390 Master Console in IBM personal

Unfortunately, OS/390 was crashed and forced by z/VM system at the same
time.
I think that even though my laptop is dead and session is suddenly closed,
it must be still running and can be reconnected by "LOGON USERID HERE"

i don't understand why this happened.
Is there anybody who has this experience like me and has the way how to

Re: the errors after turn on RACF

2009-06-10 Thread Jonathan R Nolting

Sunny,

Looks like you ran the DIRM USER command to get the copy of the directory
that was passed to RPIDIRCT to create the RACF commands. However, it does
not look like you ran the RPIBLDDS to actually update the RACF database
since you indicated running VMFVIEW SERVICE. Can you confirm you actually
ran the RACF commands?

z/VM includes a set of CP directory control statements that are
used to define OpenExtensions information to z/VM. You can use the
OVM option of the RPIDIRCT EXEC to process only the OpenExtensions
information in the CP directory, as follows:

RPIDIRCT filename filetype filemode outmode (OVM

When you are satisfied with the output from RPIDIRCT, invoke
 RPIBLDDS as follows:

  RPIBLDDS filename

where filename is the name of the SYSUT1 file created by RPIDIRCT.

>From the RPIDIRCT SYSUT1 file, can you cut/paste the commands related to
MAINT.CF1. They should be similar to RDEF/RDEFINE VMMDISK MAINT.CF1.

Issuing the RACF command RLIST VMMDISK * should show all entries in the
class. Can you provide all or some of the output?

I used
dirm user withpass
Rpidirct user withpass z a

The file is the same like what RACF Program Directory describe: ADDUSER

RDEFINE

Permit.

NO error when issue Vmfview service

I only want to establish the simple and basic RACF without share database.

Do I have the "Disallow Access" problem? I never change that on 5.4.

This is the most challange work I have in my life.

Rob, with the DETACH of MAINT's 123, I don't think the online directory has
been changed - yet?

Have you tried from MAINT:

dirm cp link maint 123 123 rw

If the online directory is in tact, this should just re-establish access to
MAINT's v123. If "dirm cp q v 123" shows the v123, then try from MAINT -
"link * 123 123 rr"

If MAINT still had the 123 and it is not in the online directory
anymore, then logging off is not a wise approach. But you can get that
back.
Normally MAINT has the DEVMAINT option, so you should be able to issue
the DEFINE MDISK to get the 0123 full pack linked. Then get the
yesterday's user backup from DIRMAINT and use MAINT to bring that
online. This will give you a MAINT 123 again that DIRMAINT can link.

thanks for your time.

I can't found other guests who linked to 123 disk except dirmaint. How

I think If i can attach the 123 minidisk(540RES) in dynamically,
dirmaint working correctly.
When dirmaint got a update command from maint, it seems to refer to
123 disks of maint that i think.

As following above email, we can use this command 'DEFINE MDISK AS 123

But, I got a error message as belows.

define mdisk as 123 0 end 540res

It might be change the 'DEFINE' option in 5.x except help page.
