Re: Updated paper available - "Sharing and maintaining SLES 10 SP2 Linux under z/VM"
Hi Mike, No luck yet. We are watching the install run now and we can see the MAC address that was assigned along with it's IP address when we display the vswitch with details. We changed the porttype from trunk to access and defined the NIC. We should find out shortly if the install is successful or not. It fails during the re-boot of the install when it starts to perform the install from the disk information that was created. It fails at the same point everytime. ..done Enabling syn flood protection..done Disabling IP forwarding..done Disabling IPv6 forwarding..done Enabling IPv6 autoconfig..done Disabling IPv6 privacy..done ..done Mounting securityfs on /sys/kernel/security ..done Loading AppArmor module ..done Loading AppArmor profiles ..done System Boot Control: The system has been set up Failed features: [80C [16Dboot.udev System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local [1A..doneStarting syslog services..done Starting D-BUS daemon..done Starting HAL daemon..done Setting up network interfaces: lo loIP address: 127.0.0.1/8 Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): ..unused Can't determine current runlevel [1A..doneWaiting for mandatory devices: eth-id-02:00:51:50:00:00 __NSC__ 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 eth-id-02:00:51:50:00:00No interface found [1A..failedSetting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...failed ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team Jul 6 12:51:30 linux kernel: ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team It does not see the MAC address in the VM system for some reason. If you are asking about the subject paper, no we did not. We used a default VSWITCH which is layer 3. I thought there were previous threads describing the correct PARMFILE variables to allow the install to succeed with a layer 2 VSWITCH. Oh, those threads were probably on the linux-390 mailing list. That list can be searched here: http://www2.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?linux-390 and here: http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-390%40vm.marist.edu/ Hope this helps. "Mike MacIsaac"(845) 433-7061

Re: Updated paper available - "Sharing and maintaining SLES 10 SP2 Linux under z/VM"
Greetings, Have you been successful with the install over an OSA defined on a layer 2 network? We are running z/VM 5.4 with the latest PTF's and SUSE 10 SP2 trying to perform the install using the IBM scripts. It is failing every time during the re-boot phase of the install. Example below. _ ..done Enabling syn flood protection..done Disabling IP forwarding..done Disabling IPv6 forwarding..done Enabling IPv6 autoconfig..done Disabling IPv6 privacy..done ..done Mounting securityfs on /sys/kernel/security ..done Loading AppArmor module ..done Loading AppArmor profiles ..done System Boot Control: The system has been set up Failed features: [80C [16Dboot.udev System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local [1A..doneStarting syslog services..done Starting D-BUS daemon..done Starting HAL daemon..done Setting up network interfaces: lo loIP address: 127.0.0.1/8 Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): ..unused Can't determine current runlevel [1A..doneWaiting for mandatory devices: eth-id-02:00:51:50:00:00 __NSC__ 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 eth-id-02:00:51:50:00:00No interface found [1A..failedSetting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...failed ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team Jul 6 12:51:30 linux kernel: ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team *** From: The IBM z/VM Operating System [mailto:ib...@listserv.uark.edu] On Behalf Of Michael MacIsaac Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2009 11:59 AM To: IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU Subject: Updated paper available - "Sharing and maintaining SLES 10 SP2 Linux under z/VM" Hello everyone, I am please to announce an updated paper "Sharing and maintaining SLES 10 SP2 Linux under z/VM", and an associated tar file with scripts and configuration files. The paper is available on the Web at: http://linuxvm.org/present/misc/ro-root-S10.pdf The tar file is available at: http://linuxvm.org/present/misc/ro-root-S10.tgz The other authors are Steve Womer, Rick Troth and Kyle Black. This is an update to the IBM Redpaper published in 2/08 with a similar title. The updates in this paper are as follow: -) Based on z/VM 5.4 (previously 5.3) -) Based on SLES 10 SP2 (previously SLES 10) -) Linux scripts and z/VM REXX EXECs added/updated -) Linux script to create read-only system now named mnt2rogld.sh -) Disk space of each Linux system increased -) /var/lib/rpm/ is bind-mounted read-only over read-write /var/ file system -) More detailed section on maintaining Linux There is a counterpart paper based on RHEL coming in hopefully about a month. Watch this space. Thanks to many people who made this possible - just to name a few: Brian France, Dom Depasquale, Carlos Ordonez, Brad Hinson, Mark Post, David Boyes, Ernie Horn, Steve Shultz and Hongjie Yang. We had hoped to also add a section on DCSSs and NSSs but ran out of time. Maybe it can still be added. Enjoy! Feedback is welcome. "Mike MacIsaac"(845) 433-7061
