Re: VM CONSOLE on the 9672
Thanks everyone for the responses. I wasn't seeing the icon for Integrated 3270 CONSOLE under CPC recovery. Our IBM Service engineer found out that the HMC installed was an old version and he is looking at upgrading it to newer version. Also found out that we need to be at Z/VM 4.4 level in order to be able to use the Integrated Console in VM. We are at 4.2 but luckily we have a copy of Z/VM 44 lying around which is currently installed in test. We can move there and see what happens. It would be interesting. I just want to say that it confirms what I already know, that this list is awesome. Thanks very much. -Original Message- From: The IBM z/VM Operating System [mailto:IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU] On Behalf Of Alan Altmark Sent: Friday, 8 April 2011 5:53 AM To: IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU Subject: Re: VM CONSOLE on the 9672 On Thursday, 04/07/2011 at 08:24 EDT, "Gentry, Stephen" wrote: > Are you talking about a 9672 which is at least 2 if not at least 3 generations > old? VM CONSOLE on the 9672
Hello All, I've been a long time subscriber to this list but first time to ask a question. We've acquired a used 9672-T26 mainframe to run VM workload. Currently we have 7060-H70. Can the 9872 HMC be configured to act as a local 3270 terminal to serve as VM console just like 7060? Thanks everyone for any info.
Re: VM Console
I put CP SET SYSOPER * in OPERATOR's PROFILE EXEC. That way, OPERATOR will become the system operator when it logs on. We run VM:Operator here, so I also issue QUERY SYSOPER in the TITLE exit, which runs once a minute. If it's not set, the exit sets it. If it's set to someone else, the exit writes a warning message. I could just automatically reset it, but I wanted to allow for the possibility that someone changed it for a reason. You have the answer already, but here's the book with the details: http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/hcsk2b30.pdf It's the Guide for Automated Installation and Service. Here's a snippet of code I use.. Say '*** When you hit ENTER - the LOADPARM screen will be displayed. Enter cons=102C in the options and hit F10 to IPL VM' Pull any /* Use neat DIAG call to set conmode and IPL all in one step */ X=DIAGRC(8,'CP TERM CONMODE 3270'||'15'X||'IPL 893D CLEAR LOADPARM 102C') Change the IPL 893D and 102C to suit your needs. You can also: 'PIPE CP Q V CONS | TAKE FIRST | SPECS W2 1 | VAR CONSADDR' and then use the variable consaddr in the code above instead of 102C Scott Rohling On Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 10:21 AM, Kris Buelens wrote: > And Q V CONS, note the address, and issue > IPL dasdaddr LOADPARM CONS > or if you want to see the SAPL panel: > IPL dasdaddr LOADPARM > in both cases "" is the address you found with Q V CONS > > 2010/8/4 Frank M. Re: Second level z/VM console
The console needs to be 3270 mode, not 3215, and needs to be listed as a console in the SYSTEM CONFIG file. If not in the config file, you can overcome that by specifying the address in the SALIPL screen. Re: VM CONSOLE Experts...I need your help
When you set up the ICC on the HMC you defined an IP# for the ICC itself. Let's say 192.168.1.1. You also define pc's as potential VM consoles within ICC. Let's say 192.168.1.2 @ cuu 400 is one such pc. After defining 400 within VM as a console and before ipl'ing vm log onto the pc and tn3270 to 192.168.1.1. IPL VM and the ipl should be directed to the pc assuming it has precedence either on the sapl screen or in your system config. -James On 5/21/07, Joan Gerads <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: James, what specifically did you mean by your first question: Did you TN3270 to the ICC adapter IP # before ipl'ing. We use the IBM PCOMM software for our consoles with an OSA-ICC on all three of our CPUs. We use both z/OS and z/VM consoles through the OSA-ICC. Re: VM CONSOLE Experts...I need your help
Hi, Joan. Joan Gerads wrote: I have a couple more questions regarding setting up a VM console through OSA-ICC. z/VM version 5.2 - IBM z9 2096 BC processor 1 LPAR VM running multiple VSE guests 1) is there any software restrictions as far as 3270 emulator software running on the PC for the VM console to work on it? We are currently trying it with QWS Plus Version 4.0 (JollyGiant Software)? Is anyone else using that software? Or what is working for you? I have had good luck using the IBM PCOMM 3270 emulator software for Windows. I'm using PCOMM 5.8 on Windows XP and it works just fine. As far as I know, there are no limitations on what TN3270 emulator product you can use to connect to the OSA-ICC adapter. 2) secondly, on the HMC screen for OSA Advanced Facilities, 'active sessions configuration', there is a field called 'MIFID'. In the IBM Redbook example, this field is set to a 'C' on a VM console definition. On our screen, our VM console session, it is set to a '1' (the default?)what exactly does 'C' mean? Good question; I don't really know the answerbut I don't recall ever having to change the MIFID field from it's default when I set up an OSA-ICC adapter on a z800 once. On a trial IPL of VM this last weekend, we could not get the OSA-ICC PC to come up as the VM console...I am pretty sure the system configuration is correct...we can 'DISC' from the dummy tube and 'RECONNECT' on the PC. We just have not figured out the VM IPL- how to get it to come up on the OSA-ICC PC. To the host o/s (here in your case, z/VM) the OSA-ICC appears to be a locally attached 3270 device, at a given address. To the TN3270 emulator on a workstation, the OSA-ICC appears as a TN3270 server. It appears that you don't have your z/VM configuration set up correctly. Try the following: 1) 'DISC' from your dummy device, as you describe above. 2) reconnect to a VM user id (say, OPERATOR) from the PC 3) from the OPERATOR screen, do a 'QUERY OPERATOR' You should see a response that looks like this: OPERATOR - 0700 The number above is the address of the "local" 3270 device z/VM is using for the OPERATOR console. You need to specify that address when you IPL your z/VM system (on the SAIPL screen via the "cons=0700" input) and also in your SYSTEM CONFIG file in the CONSOLE= statement. Hope this helps.
