Re: VM CONSOLE on the 9672

2011-04-07 Thread Ray Padre
Thanks everyone for the responses. I wasn't seeing the icon for
Integrated 3270 CONSOLE under CPC recovery. Our
IBM Service engineer found out that the HMC installed was an old version
and he is looking at upgrading it to newer version. Also found out that
we need to be at Z/VM 4.4 level in order to be able to use the
Integrated Console in VM. We are at 4.2 but luckily we have a copy of
Z/VM 44 lying around which is currently installed in test. We can move
there and see what happens. It would be interesting.

I just want to say that it confirms what I already know, that this list
is awesome.

Thanks very much.

z/VM Version 4 Release 4 was the last release to run on a 9672, but
that's
only interesting if (a) you have z/VM V4 laying around, and (2) you have

the needed licenses.

z/VM V3 and VM/ESA, even though no longer available or serviced, still
require payment of monthly license fees as long as you use them. If the

9672 moves you up to a new (virtual) model group, then your MLC
increases.

Does your 9672 runs in LPAR mode? If not, it is possible that the
Integrated 3270 console doesn't work, it'll remain black.

And, to complement Alan: you enter SYSG in the loadparm field to get the
SAPL screen. Then in the overrides, you can enter CONS=SYSG to get CP
there too.

Once you've selected an LPAR on the HMC, one of the Recovery actions will
be "Integrated 3270 Console". Open it up and you'll get a CP logo. If
you want it to be the operator's console at IPL, then you need to have the
window open BEFORE you IPL. If you don't have SYSTEM_3270 in your
OPERATOR_CONSOLES statement in SYSTEM CONFIG, then you'll need to specify
a console of CONSSYSG in the loadparm.

Don't use the "Configure 3270 Sessions" app. That's for creating telnet
sessions.

The 9672 has an integrated 3270 console (one per LPAR), but it does not
have the OSA-Integrated Communications Console (OSA-ICC), which is a
closer match to the 3270 support in the Multiprise.

Hello All,

I've been a long time subscriber to this list but first time to ask a
question. We've acquired a used 9672-T26 mainframe to run VM workload.

Currently we have 7060-H70. Can the 9872 HMC be configured to act as a

local 3270 terminal to serve as VM console just like 7060?

Thanks everyone for any info.

Re: VM Console

2010-09-03 Thread O'Brien, Dennis L
I put CP SET SYSOPER * in OPERATOR's PROFILE EXEC. That way, OPERATOR
will become the system operator when it logs on. We run VM:Operator
here, so I also issue QUERY SYSOPER in the TITLE exit, which runs once a
minute. If it's not set, the exit sets it. If it's set to someone
else, the exit writes a warning message. I could just automatically
reset it, but I wanted to allow for the possibility that someone changed
it for a reason.

SET SYSOPER OPERATOR. (There's a QUERY SYSOPER, too.) When the current
operator logs off, the system goes into 'hunt' mode, looking for a likely
victim. If one of the ALTERNATE_OPERATORS is currently logged on, they
are bitten and transformed into The Operator (shudder, eerie music plays).
Else the system pulls back into the shadows, waiting for a user with the
Right Stuff to wander by, where "Right Stuff" is defined as the value from
the PRIV_CLASSES OPERATOR statement in SYSTEM CONFIG (defaults to class
A). If such a user logs on, the system lunges at them and sinks its teeth
in. They start seeing things.

Re: Second level z/VM console

Here's a snippet of code I use..

Say '*** When you hit ENTER - the LOADPARM screen will be displayed. Enter
cons=102C in the options and hit F10 to IPL VM'

Pull any

/* Use neat DIAG call to set conmode and IPL all in one step */
X=DIAGRC(8,'CP TERM CONMODE 3270'||'15'X||'IPL 893D CLEAR LOADPARM 102C')

Change the IPL 893D and 102C to suit your needs. You can also:

'PIPE CP Q V CONS | TAKE FIRST | SPECS W2 1 | VAR CONSADDR'

and then use the variable consaddr in the code above instead of 102C

Re: Second level z/VM console

2010-08-04 Thread Schuh, Richard
The console needs to be 3270 mode, not 3215, and needs to be listed as a
console in the SYSTEM CONFIG file. If not in the config file, you can overcome
that by specifying the address in the SALIPL screen.

2007-05-22 Thread James M

When you set up the ICC on the HMC you defined an IP# for the ICC
itself. Let's say 192.168.1.1.
You also define pc's as potential VM consoles within ICC. Let's say
192.168.1.2 @ cuu 400 is one such pc.
After defining 400 within VM as a console and before ipl'ing vm log
onto the pc and tn3270 to 192.168.1.1.
IPL VM and the ipl should be directed to the pc assuming it has
precedence either on the sapl screen or in your system config.

There's a lot to consider & check.
Did you tn3270 to the ICC adapter IP # before ipl'ing?
Is your iocp correct?
Is your system config correct - console defined same as ipl device on ICC def.
Are your ICC definitions correct - valid ipl device & pc ip # specified
correctly

OSA-ICC.

z/VM version 5.2 -

VM running multiple VSE guests

1) is there any software restrictions as far as 3270 emulator software
running on the PC for the VM console to work on it? We are currently
trying it with QWS Plus Version 4.0 (JollyGiant Software)?

Is anyone else using that software? Or what is working for you?

2) secondly, on the HMC screen for OSA Advanced Facilities, 'active

Redbook example, this field is set to a 'C' on a VM console definition.
On our screen, our VM console session, it is set to a '1' (the

On a trial IPL of VM this last weekend, we could not get the OSA-ICC PC

is correct...we can 'DISC' from the dummy tube and 'RECONNECT' on the
PC. We just have not figured out the VM IPL- how to get it to come up

z/VM version 5.2 -
IBM z9 2096 BC processor 1 LPAR
VM running multiple VSE guests

Two questions that I could use any advice, tips or tricks with:

We recently migrated to z/VM 5.2 and an IBM z9 BC processor:

1)We recently switched our VM console from a dummy terminal to an
OSA connection. We 'disc' VM on the dummy terminal and reconnected the
console on the PC. That part worked fine. We will not be IPL'ing VM
until this weekend so my question is: What do we need to do to have the
OSA console be recognized as the VM console during an IPL of VM? For
the dummy terminal, we had the address hard assigned in the system
configuration under Console Definitions: Operator_ConsolesHow do you
do that same thing with an OSA VM console? An example would be

We setup our OSA ICC to use IBM PCOMM with a windows machine.

I setup the TN3270 client to have infinite retries and no wait time between
TN3270 connections.

This redbook help considerably

the TN3270 client needs to be connected to the OSA ICC port before the VM ipl
is done.

2007-05-21 Thread Joan Gerads
James,
what specifically did you mean by your first question: Did you TN3270
to the ICC adapter IP # before ipl'ing.

How do you TN3270 to the IP # before ipl'ing and AFTER OSA is reset with
the ipl? We had the TN3270 session ready before the IPL and then the
OSA is reset in the IPL, so is there a timing issue with having to get
the TN3270 session ready again for the IPL to find it to send the SAIPL
screen?

We think the IOCP and system config are correct.

There's a lot to consider & check.
Did you tn3270 to the ICC adapter IP # before ipl'ing?
Is your iocp correct?
Is your system config correct - console defined same as ipl device on
ICC def.
Are your ICC definitions correct - valid ipl device & pc ip # specified
correctly

be IPL'ing VM until this weekend so my question is: What do we need to
do to have the OSA console be recognized as the VM console during an IPL

do you do that same thing with an OSA VM console? An example would be

Re: VM CONSOLE Experts...I need your help

Hi, Joan.

I have had good luck using the IBM PCOMM 3270 emulator software for
Windows. I'm using PCOMM 5.8 on Windows XP and it works just fine. As
far as I know, there are no limitations on what TN3270 emulator product
you can use to connect to the OSA-ICC adapter.

2) secondly, on the HMC screen for OSA Advanced Facilities, 'active
sessions configuration', there is a field called 'MIFID'. In the IBM
Redbook example, this field is set to a 'C' on a VM console definition.
On our screen, our VM console session, it is set to a '1' (the
default?)what exactly does 'C' mean?

Good question; I don't really know the answerbut I don't recall ever
having to change the MIFID field from it's default when I set up an
OSA-ICC adapter on a z800 once.

On a trial IPL of VM this last weekend, we could not get the OSA-ICC PC
to come up as the VM console...I am pretty sure the system configuration
is correct...we can 'DISC' from the dummy tube and 'RECONNECT' on the
PC. We just have not figured out the VM IPL- how to get it to come up
on the OSA-ICC PC.

To the host o/s (here in your case, z/VM) the OSA-ICC appears to be a
locally attached 3270 device, at a given address. To the TN3270 emulator
on a workstation, the OSA-ICC appears as a TN3270 server. It appears
that you don't have your z/VM configuration set up correctly.

Try the following:
1) 'DISC' from your dummy device, as you describe above.
2) reconnect to a VM user id (say, OPERATOR) from the PC
3) from the OPERATOR screen, do a 'QUERY OPERATOR'
You should see a response that looks like this:
   OPERATOR - 0700
The number above is the address of the "local" 3270 device z/VM is using
for the OPERATOR console. You need to specify that address when you IPL
your z/VM system (on the SAIPL screen via the "cons=0700" input) and
also in your SYSTEM CONFIG file in the CONSOLE= statement.

Hope this helps.
