I'm having a problem with my iMac G5 and playing video (.avi files).
Used to play them just fine, but recently, without warning, the
video pauses (the two vertical bars) and the machine goes into sleep
mode. The farther I get into a video file the closer together the
pause/sleep episodes get. Kinda seems like a heat issue, but I'm not
sure.

Does the problem occur if you play the video with a different player
app? With non-avi's?

How's the temp in the room? Are the mac's fans runnin?

...Are there temp sensors in that Mac? If so, use something like
iStat Menus to monitor CPU use and temps.

I couldn't when I clicked Preview from the Acrobat Reader print screen
(got a message saying Preview is not supported), but I took Dan's
advice and uninstalled the Adobe reader, then opened the PDF directly
in Preview and everything's fine. I'll just stick with Preview, then.
And the "minimal" network just means two computers and a wireless
router. The "direct-connected" bit means the printer is hooked up
directly to this machine and is not on the network (except as a shared
printer). Thanks all! Bill

the 'M' slider? Mine has just Input Volume and a mute checkbox showing.

My New 27" iMac lets me change the input volume; sadly, since it's 3 miles
away, I cannot test the volume, but IIRC it works just fine.

Without catching up on the details here I want to point out that some Mac
audio inputs are " line level " and need to be connected to powered mics.

We ran into that at the university when they got new mics.

Thanks Drew. That's exactly want I've resorted to, using Audacity to record,
then boosting the signal. There are no high peaks when recording, just low
levels uniformly across the whole waveform. It's a PITA tho, to have to do
that, then paste each track into iMovie. Using the usb mic at high gain is
picking up breathing, and the internal mic does a better job, just too low.

Santa

Thanks Tina & Walter.

Tina, I don't want to return this iMac only to find that it's a common fault.

Walter, everything, Speech input, Line in in System preferences/Sound, & Audio
Midi, is turned up to the max.

The best I can get is with the usb mic turned up to 20dB, and that's not as
good as sound as my last iMac using the input mic.

The 'M' slider on my new iMac is greyed out in Sound Preferences, and is set
very low. I presume it's the reason for the low input. Can anyone verify
whether their 'M' slider is active/inactive on an iMac please?

Internal mic

Out of another forum, I've tried the Audio Midi input.app from Utilities. I can
set the gain on a usb mic to 20dB, but only set the gain on the internal mic to
12dB.

I've lodged a bug report with Apple, and they have responded asking for more
