Hi there,

I second everything Brian says, except for a couple of things.

1) That iMac model can only address 3GB of RAM. Bumping it up to the
full 4GB could add an infinitesimal speed bump (I know this from first
hand experience, having a maxed out 17" model), but it's not worth it
in the end. A single 2GB would be the best way to unleash this Mac.

2) I would suggest upgrading to Snow Leopard only, not Lion. Snow
Leopard is a wonderful, smooth, stable OS. Lion is a mixed bag, too
much of a work in progress, at least for my taste. I'm actually
happier using Windows 7 or my latest discovery, Linux Mint (the first
out-of-the-box-usable, geeks-be-darned Linux distro I have ever
tried), than Lion. But that could be just me, of course.

HTH,

Felix

You're thinking of the nightly, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts, which
do things like rotate logs, clear some caches, etc.

Missing these scripts could eventually (over a very long time, years in some
cases) cause slowdowns or even in extreme cases crashes (by running out of disk
space, never a good thing for a unix system) because the system logs (in
particular THE syslog) could become very large and unwieldy..I once saw a
syslog that was 2.4 gigs in size.

(a combination of something writing a ton of errors to the log, and the system
being shut down every night, all for a couple months before someone asked me
about this system that was mysteriously sluggish and unresponsive.)

Here an old explanation of these scripts:

Since the advent of OS X using launchd instead of xinetd in 10.4, however, the
scripts will run the next time the system is turned on if you miss 'em.

So 10.2 or 10.3 systems will benefit from using Onyx or Cocktail on a regular
basis, 10.4 and later don't need these utilities.

Onyx offers a bunch of other useful utility functions so it's a good thing to
have around.

You're right John, what I meant was that Leopard is becoming less and less
useful to an average user.

And yes, I completely forgot about Snow Leopard, that would also work.

My understanding was that as soon as Lion was released Leopard was no
longer supported.

If I'm lookiing at the correct everymac.com entry for your system than
you could also upgrade to either Snow Leopard (on its way out) or
Lion, the currently supported version of OS X.

Not sure what would be the best approach for you in your situation.
For one thing, to be safe I'd recommend that you backup your system
before upgrading, but you indicated in your earlier post that you
weren't sure how to do that.

Another thing is that Lion is installed from the Internet, not from a
DVD as earlier versions of OS X were. But you need to have Snow
Leopard installed in order to install Lion from the Apple App store.
Tedious for someone who doesn't enjoy futzing with computers for its
own sake.

Think I'll step back and see what advice others might offer.

Re: upgrade from tiger to???

2012-01-31 Thread Jonas Ulrich
I would be willing to bet that the problem is viewing video on the web.
Thats because Tiger is too old now, and doesn't support the latest Flash
Player. You could safely update to Leopard without upgrading the ram, but
you would soon need to upgrade that as well, because Leopard is on it's way
out.

I would definitely upgrade the ram to at least 2GB, and update the OS to
the newest, 10.7 Lion.

You've got a great computer there, just an old OS.

iMac Question

2012-01-31 Thread Bill Brown
Greetings Group.

Have a question or two for you gurus:

Basics:
iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM.

Question:
I read somewhere on one of these groups that the Macs perform some type
of automatic system routine early in the morning, like around 3 AM. Can someone
enlighten me as to where I can find info regarding these late-nite routines?
I usually shut down my computers at bed time, and would like to know if
I'm harming or preventing the routines from running. Anyone know of this?

Also, which Macs do this? I have the above iMac, a Mac Mini, and a Blueberry
350 MHz iMac.

Thanks.

G'day Listers

I sent Kelly offlist instructions of how to take screen shots of the 'About
this Mac' window

First the good news, Kellys got a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.11

Second, the bad news, it's only got standard 1 GB DDR2 ram.

1. Kelly, your Mac should handle video fine, except you might have a lack of
memory problem.. You might try the Perian and Flip4Mac Quicktime extensions tho.

http://perian.org/

http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4macwmv

There's a link on the Flip4Mac page to a version suited to 10.4

2. Your Mac can run any version of OS X right up to Lion.

3. I suggest you upgrade your ram to 2 or 3 GB (keeping your present 1 GB if
it's a single stick, which from memory they were).
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_2006

You can add a single 2 GB Stick of ram for $33.99 (to make 3 GB) or a 1 GB
stick for $18.99 (to make 2 GB), or even throw away the 1 GB and go for 4 GB
($64.99), all depending on what you can afford.

A golden rule is the more ram the better, but you'll need to check what memory
configuration you've got.

To check the memory, open the 'About this Mac' again, and click on the 'more
info' button. You'll get a list of details. Under 'Hardware' choose 'Memory'.
You'll get something like…

Memory Slots

DIMM0 1GB DDR2
DIMM1

However, if you get

DIMM0 512 MB DDR2
DIMM1 512 MB DDR2

then you'll need to throw away the sticks and replace both. You'll need help
probably to replace the sticks, they can be hard to get out and insert.

Regards

Santa
