Re: eMac with blank HD won't boot from CD

2015-06-29 Thread Christopher Satterfield
You should be able to force it with OpenFirmware, I've done it off a USB
drive for my TiBook.

Try following the instructions here:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20101011105729488

Rather than using usb use whichever the CD drive is, but instructions
should be pretty much the same.

Re: Using MS Windows

2013-07-09 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Used Pentium 4s might be a bit too slow, however depending on if you want
to put money into it a used Thinkpad T60(\61), T400(401) or a Latitude
E6400\6500 can be picked up for $100-$200 here with Windows 7 and such
already on it, and (sorry for this) the E6400\T400 have a faster processor
than the 1.83 GHz iMac. When you do get a proper work computer you can just
sell off anything like these for right around what you paid, possibly a bit
more.

Re: Low bandwidth DSL or the Mac?

2012-07-12 Thread Christopher Satterfield
1 gig of ram seems to be enough for OS 10.5, my eMac G4/1 GHz runs fine
with that.

One thing that I would try is restarting the internet modem\device you have
for connecting, I've found that with AT&T DSL and a Motorola NVG510 that if
I don't reset it once a week the internet download drops from 127 Kb/s
(real data, not raw) down to around 38 Kb/s.

Re: iMac G5 issue with DVD Drive

2012-06-03 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Are you trying to boot a OS disk or just a regular disk in general keeping
it from booting? If you're trying to boot an OS disk you need to use a
10.2-10.5, 10.5 is the best as it provides the most usability and it runs
well on a G5.

Also, to boot from a disk you need to hold down the C key, and if that
doesn't work try holding down the option key to bring up the "Boot menu".

Re: vintage-2000 G4 in trouble - wont start

2012-05-06 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Depending on what you want to spend, you can get a G5 which will be faster
than any G4, or find a cheap Intel mac such as an original Macbook, even a
Core Duo will be faster than a G5. The Core Duo macbooks can be found on my
local Craigslist for between $150-250 with a battery that doesn't hold a
charge, but using it on a desk a battery isn't needed.

As for the clicking, that I find strange. I've always found that to be the
PSU to be the issue, but I'm not sure of that if the new PSU is a known
working one, I've never seen that before, but I would assume it's something
to do with the power on signal, possibly short bursts instead of a steady
signal?

I find it interesting that it would take the disk then spit it out. Is the

One thing to try would also inserting the disk while the system is running

hitting restart.

Re: G3 Blueberry --- was: Help! What to do with iMac Bondi G3 Tray Loading 233mhx cpu 256 mb ram

2012-01-24 Thread Christopher Satterfield
I have a G3/400 iMac, slot loading also, and it feels quite slow to me
running OS 10.2, I just got Tiger disks so I'll run an upgrade sometime
soon, whenever I feel like digging it out of the garage. Mine has a gig of
ram, but then again I also never got to reinstall the OS when I got it so
the original 20 gig drive has like 2 gigs free.

I will tell you though that speed is a matter of opinion. For my mac I
typically use a Dual 2 GHz G5 with 4 gigs ram, and that makes my desktop
running Linux feel slow (2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo with 3 gigs ram).

As for airport, I also noticed that all the adapters seemed to be in China
also. About 2 years ago I got my iMac and I wanted wireless also, but
didn't feel like buying one from China, so I just used an old Windows
laptop with a bad screen (backlight was out) and ran that using Internet
Connection Sharing and a crossover cable for internet, cheap and works,
even more so when you pull the screen completely to save power.

And for ram, mixing is fine, I originally had it running with a 512 and a
128 before I got a 2nd 512 meg chip, both of different speeds and it worked
fine. Just make sure you're not using 66 MHz ram, only 100 and 133 MHz ram.

processors, at least the 2007 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac I worked on had the
CPU identified by CPU-Z in Bootcamp with XP as a Mobile Core 2 Duo.

As for upgrading, I'm sure it's possible. It was possible in the Mac Mini's
so I don't see why it wouldn't be a socketed chip, it would take a lot of
work to solder 478 pins as close together as they are.

Re: your daily dose of 'Arrrrrgggghhhh' from the support trenches...

2011-12-19 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Hmm...I happen to be a Windows\Linux users since I can't afford a new Mac.
Then again...I need Windows now for some games like Portal 2 and Portal
since a Dual 2 GHz G5 won't run them as for 1.) PPC is dead to Valve and
2.) The stock Radeon 9600 isn't all that great when you compare it to the
XLR8 (PNY) GeForce 9800 GTX+ in my desktop.

Although I do want a newer mac, I can't afford one (I can't even afford a
$40 ram upgrade for my laptop running Linux).

Re: Upgrading the emac is it worth it

2011-12-04 Thread Christopher Satterfield
I would upgrade the ram to the full 1 GB it supports, it'll be a LOT
faster. If you want to watch DVDs I would recommend finding a USB or a
Firewire drive since it is easier than replacing the internal. OS 10.4 is
the lastest it supports so no upgrading that, unless you want a dreadfully
slow Leopard install that isn't technically supported.

Re: iMac USB 2 1.25 GHz G4

2011-11-20 Thread Christopher Satterfield
A G4 really isn't the best for movies, a G5 can do it a lot better but for
anything above 480p you'll want to find an Intel mac. The bottle neck in
this case is the CPU, I don't believe that the browsers use the GPU for
video rendering.

Re: emac 700Mhz Opinium

2011-11-10 Thread Christopher Satterfield
1 gig of ram on an 800 MHz G4 was usable but not the greatest. However, it
will be a huge improvement over 256 megs, you will not regret upgraded.
However, I was spoiled by a Dual 2 GHz G5 with 6 gigs of ram at the same
time, which a single G5 is better than any G4.

I installed Leopard on an 800 MHz eMac with 1 gig of ram so that's how I
know. I got Leopard on it by using my 1 GHz emac, connecting the 800 one
using Firewire Target Mode and installing as if the 800 was a firewire
drive, worked great.

Re: issues with Core Duo imac

2011-04-08 Thread Christopher Satterfield
You can always just remove the couple of screws on the bottom and then the
entire back will come off and you can just use a can of compressed air to
clean the entire inside out. I'm going to do that later this month to a
couple of school iMacs that really need cleaned.

Those temps are normal for anything. As a mater of fact they are lower than
the PC I'm using. (Don't worry, I'm a mac using PC guy because macs have
their advantages just like PCs).

Re: Imac G3 ehternet not working

2011-03-28 Thread Christopher Satterfield
OS 8 on the internet is going to be terrible because of lack of modern web
support in the browsers and no flash\java support. I would see how much ram
it has and if it has enough run the newest Mac OS is supports and if you
can't find any OS X install disks try using something like Xubuntu or Debian
on it because both are Linux distributions and both have support for new
programs.

Re: Question re RAM compatibility between iMac & MBP -

2011-03-28 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Yes, it will fit because both are DDR3 laptop ram. The only difference is
that the iMac's ram has a slightly faster bus speed but to be honest, I
don't think you would notice a speed difference.

Re: core duo or core 2 duo?

2011-03-24 Thread Christopher Satterfield
After some research if you were to get a Core 2 Duo iMac you would need a
Aluminum one in order to boot into Mac OS 64-bit mode because the original
white C2D iMacs only have a 32-bit EFI.

If it gives you a message that the device is drawing too much power I would
try to see if you can get your hands on a powered USB hub and connect the
scanner\other devices to that to see if Mac OS still gives you that message.

You could always try to use Q-[kju:] with FreeDOS and have a virtual DOS
computer which will be slightly slower but it should eliminate the problem
where the game becomes unresponsive to mouse clicks.

You'll probably need a new motherboard (logic board) to fix this because the
USB controllers are soldered onto the motherboard.

Re: Anyone else with an eMac 800mhz? Need advice on a current upgrading...

2011-01-18 Thread Christopher Satterfield
In order to upgrade the USB from 1.1 to 2.0 you would need to completely
disassemble the system, desolder the USB controller chip from the
motherboard, solder a new one on and if it even turns on after that it still
probably won't work because Mac OS doesn't have the drivers. I hate to tell
this to you but you are stuck with USB 1.1 on that system.

Re: Help with second hand iMac G3 with no operating system or disks

2011-01-16 Thread Christopher Satterfield
The G3 iMacs only will boot from original disks (not burnt ones). Yours has
anywhere between 64 and 256 Mb of ram unless it has been upgraded which
means that if you have 64 Mb you can boot Mac OS 9.2.2 at the most and if
you have 128 Mb or more you can boot OS X (depends on ram as to what
version).

I would check on your local craigslist, freecycle, etc to see if there are
any disks available.

You might want to try Xubuntu for PowerPC. It is lighter than Ubuntu is and
it is based off the sane system. (The only difference us using the Xfce
interface rather than the Gnome interface).

Re: Running Linux on mac G3

2010-12-27 Thread Christopher Satterfield
I installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my iMac and the only problem seemed to be with
the video. (16-bit). I couldn't find a driver so I put the original hard
drive back into it. You may have the same problem if you have an ATI Rage
128 card in it.

I would try the LEM swap list. You also can keep this iMac because it will
run Snow Leopard, only it can't boot in to 64-bit mode due to a 32-bit EFI.
