iMac G4 "eyeball" speakers
I was recently given a 17" G4 iMac. It's a cute little machine, but didn't come with any speakers. I'm see that speakers abound on eBay, but I'm noticing some of them seem to have clear plastic grills with 3 large holes over the front of the speaker. Now I'm curious. Was this how they were manufactured and most speakers have had them break or lost over the years or was this an aftermarket option? Playing video on a slot-loading iMac G3
My daughter is using a few old iMac G3 slot-loaders for a kiosk-style informational video for her robotics team's upcoming competition. She has put together a video in iMovie, but we can't seem to find the "right" settings to get the video to playback smoothly in Quicktime (these are 400-500MHz, 768MB-1GB Ram, running 10.4). She's tried exporting the video to a Quicktime movie using various settings, but nothing has worked so far - the audio is always great, but the video just can't keep up. Would anyone happen to know what format the video would need to be for this to work well? The solution she has come up with is to create a DVD with iDVD, move the TS_Video folder to the hard drive, and then run the video using DVD player. Unfortunately, this only works on the iMac's that have an internal DVD drive. The ones that are CD only refuse to let the DVD player app start up. Is there a work around for that? I would love to put a few kids movies on one of these old boxes as a video "babysitter" while my wife and I steal a few moments together away from my youngest. Re: Needed - Head phone jack for iMac G3 slot loader
Dave, If you're sure you don't want to salvage them, I'd sure appreciate it. I'd imagine the sound board work just fine, so I'm not worried about testing it. The one I have doesn't work because the iMac was dropped on it's face and this little "sound board" seemed to take the brunt of the fall. When the computer was picked up, the sound board was loose and rattling around in the case. Upon removal, I found the board cracked in half. I'm guessing when the iMac fell that since the headphone jacks protrude a little bit proud of the face of the computer it cracked. Anyways, it appears that the iMac now thinks headphones are always plugged in as I can't get any sound out of the speakers. Were you planning on scrapping these? If so, I might be interested in other parts/pieces too??? Especially if any of them were the DVD model. We're headed out for a while. Probably won't be back by email for a day or so, so no rush. Re: Playing DVD movies on G3 Indigo iMac
Well, here's where I ended up... Handbrake H.264 - No good, regardless of the setting I tried. I got the "Apple iPod" preset to work, but only by switching the codec from h.264 to mpeg-4. The video is shrunk from 720x480 down to 320X240, but works well enough for my needs. I'm off to rip some DVDs!!! ffmepgx - lots of great options here. Definitely a keeper in the video toolbox. Conversions from H264 rips went well, but since I was able to get the Handbrake rip to work, I won't have to run each DVD through the conversion process - saving tons of time. Some good food for thought. Thank you all! I think I've found a possible internal DVD replacement drive. May give that a try if I can't find the appropriate Handbrake settings. Looking at Handbrake, it looks like I can either use an H.264 video codec or MPEG-4 (FFmpeg) codec. Any idea which of these I should be using? I don't see a way to use an MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 codec. Playing DVD movies on G3 Indigo iMac
Looking for a little help here. I've got an Indigo iMac, 500MHz, with 512MB ram that has a CD drive only. I'm trying to get movies onto it but running into problems. First off, DVD Player will not open as it knows there isn't an internal DVD drive attached. Plugging in either an external firewire or USB drive doesn't make a difference with DVD Player. I tried making a disc image of the DVD and mounting that, but DVD Player still wouldn't start. So, I then tried copying the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders to the hard drive. Neither VLC nor MPlayer was able to play back video. I'd get audio that sounded great, but absolutely no video. ??? Lastly, I tried using Handbrake on a different computer to rip the DVD down into m4v format. Transferred that over to the iMac and fired it up in iTunes 8.2.1. Better, but not usable. This time I got audio and really stuttered video. Unusable again. I've still got one Handbrake preset left to try (I think I did Universal and iPod Touch/iPhone last night), but thought I would ask here to see if anyone else has figured this out already. Thanks! Re: airport card
Ok, I think I'm finally killing this thread. I've gone into the FIOS 424 router and have tried every iteration of WPA settings available. Nothing will work. WEP works fine, but I don't want to leave the entire network at the WEP level. All this is frustrating, and odd, as I can connect to my Airport Express via WPA without problem. It is the 424 that I cannot connect to. So, I'm off to rethink my network topology. Maybe something that will incorporate the AE as an access point. Just in case, here is the error the 424 gives me. Does anyone recognize it? "The password you entered is not correct for the AirPort network "Galaxy". Which is utterly odd, as I can see the password I'm typing in and it matches what the router is showing me. :( Doug On Oct 22, 2011, at 11:28 PM, Dan wrote: > On Oct 20, 8:39 pm, "D. The router I have is an Actiontec MI-424WR. I was hoping I could get it set up to run WPA with the airport card in my G3 iMac, but I've had no such luck... Re: Airport card
Thanks everyone for all the help! We've determined we can connect to some, but not all WPA networks. If our Airport Express is hosting the network (or other Apple gear), we are good to go. If the FIOS router is the host, then we are hosed - no mixture of settings in the FIOS router seem to work with AirCard. Strange, but it is what it is. I've got a few older routers around the house that I'd like to try out. I am guessing they'll be hit or miss too. Once we sort that out, all that's really left will be to determine which parts of the network will go. But at least we know the wireless card is good for the old iMac!!! :) Doug On Oct 21, 2011, at 4:59 AM, Shields E-mail wrote: > I am a technotard but have had issues with the settings and security and Fios > myself. Re: airport card
Sorry, I misread the B mode comment. It "looks" like my router should support a B device. I was hoping for a B only mode to further eliminate things, but don't have that option. Agreed, the issue is with the security, but I'm having a hard time pinning it down. I've done the WPA TKIP, WPA AES, and WPA TKIP and AES. I've had no success with either setting. However, I'm still thinking the issue is with the FIOS router because if I use my old AirPort Express to set up a new wireless network, I can connect to that without problems. I was just now trying to get my AirPort Express to join my existing FIOS wireless network, but that is no longer working. I'm finding this whole process rather frustrating, as it was working and hosting a USB printer prior to my messing around with the old iMac. I can't figure out why I can't get it all back to where it was... :( I've enjoyed computers for MANY years. I love tinker with them, even old ones. But it always seems the most frustration occurs when playing with wireless network settings... Re: airport card
I'm having mixed results... If I try to connect an iMac G3 indigo with Airport card to my existing Verizon FIOS wireless router (MI424), it WILL NOT connect regardless of how I set it up. WEP, WPA, WPA2, with TKIP, with AES, with both... No combination seems to work. However, if I set up my old Airport Express (g only) to create a wireless network - low and behold my iMac connects just fine using WPA. Any thoughts out there on why I'm good to go with the AE but not with the FIOS router??? Oooh, Tina reminds me... Again, depending upon which iMac, you may also have partition issues for the OS. The older tray loaders needed the OS within the first 8GB (maybe less) of the hard drive. Re: iMac G3 Rev D
Thanks for the responses. I'll hit all 4 at once... 1 and 4) Your loading problem could be that Apple doesn't want OSX loaded onto platforms that hav a processor slower than 876Mhz... According to Apple, 10.3 is supported for this hardware (iMac Rev D w/ USB). 2) Sounds like the mac may have a firmware password set... Hmmm. The iMac was a gift for my 3 year old. It came a friend who is contract tech support. He pulled it from a clients "trash" pile. This is definitely worth a try! 3) Is that a genuine 10.3 disc or a copy? Great question, as who knows what's actually on a torrent. However, they're the black retail CDs, original box and all. Your patience is much appreciated in this! Re: iMac G3 Rev D
Thanks Bruce. I've tried holding down the 'C' key, but that doesn't work on this particular Mac. Seems to work on every other Mac I own, just not this one... Any other ideas to get the 10.3 CD to boot? And for a "rough" equivalent, sounds like Boot ROM is similar to a PC's Master Boot Record. ROM Version would be the BIOS. Mac OS ROM file would be "other" low level routines. Am I close? iMac G3 Rev D
Quick question for everyone. I was given a G3 Rev D (tray loader). I have retail discs (CDs) for both OS 10.0 and 10.3. With the 10.0 disc I can change the "Start Up" disk to point to the CD. With the 10.3 disc, I cannot. Any thoughts on what might be happening here? I've tried installing all the updates, but admit I am new to Mac and a little unclear what is supposed to be happening (or what version I "should" have). What I've found is the following: ROM Version $77D.45F6 Boot ROM version 3.0.F2 Mac OS Rom File version 8.7 Why is everything called a ROM? I'm confused and would appreciate enlightenment!
