Don't be afraid of Terminal. It's nothing in the world but a command
line interface to your computer, the old style before Finder etc.
Terminal.app behaves like a normal app. Just launch it and hit it
with commands.

This web site has a great tutorial for using Terminal:

No, he didn't mean it that way, more like 'there are just a few people having

And neither should ANYONE on a regular basis. OS X is very robust OS, it does
not break unless you mess with it, generally. You should not be getting
directory corruption from even heavy use by AV programs.

Again, Barring hardware failure, OS X is robust; it can maintain uptimes of
months without issues.

Your AV software may rely on things that break when Apple offers an update so
it's wise to CHECK before you blithely install those updates.

This does not mean OS X breaks easily. This DOES mean that you make sure the
developers of your critical apps test the updates first.

There is really only two rules for maintaining production systems:

1) If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It.

You don't HAVE to run every update Apple puts out the moment it comes out. Look
at the list of what an update does. If it doesn't mention a specific problem
you're having, put it on a test machine first, see what breaks before you
install it on the system you rely on to run your business. It doesn't have to
be a serious production system, but it does need to run the stuff you need to
use. An old G4 or G5, or iMac or Macbook if you use Intel systems. Set it up
with your major software, and use it to test system updates. When and if you
upgrade main systems, use the oldest as your testbed device. It can be a
regular production system, just make sure it's one you can do without for the
time it takes to re-install.

Be smart about re-installing. Get your system set up so it's 'just right'. Then
use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it to an external drive (even just a bare HDD,
using one of these )
clone the drive, then put the cloned drive on the shelf and leave it there. If
you need to re-install, get the drive off the shelf and let OS X restore
everything for you. when you re-install the OS. It takes a few hours to redo
everything, but you don't need to be there, you can be off doing something else.

We use these same techniques at the college to streamline disaster recovery;
they're equally applicable to Fortune 500 multinational companies as they are
to one-man shops.

Even Microsoft Word can break things...one professor here charged ahead and got
Office 2011 for the Mac, because she had a persistent problem with Word; it
fixed her problem, but too late she discovered that EndNote (a bibliographic
database widely used in the sciences) is not yet compatible with Office 2011.

She discovered this 2 days before a big grant proposal was due (at about 8PM on
a Friday, to be exact), by adding a reference and finding that all her
references and her end notes vanished. (fortunately she is one of the users I
support, and has been lectured ad nauseam about the importance of backups, so
she was able to downgrade to Office 2008 then open up a backup copy of the
document.)

2) Don't install anything more than you need on critical systems.

Your studio systems are the core of your business. You should be installing
just the software you need to do that on them. By all means get a 'playtime'
mac to install all those cool browser plugins, and trial programs and
windowshade icon changifier screen backgrounds that look cool but don't
actually contribute to the task of running your businesslike
LiveBackground...

aha, all i got was 213.4 MB ( 213,411,944 bytes) .  What
da???

It's a giant download.  Any sort of telecom glitch will end it
prematurely.

Do you have enough free space on your HD to hold it?

Safari should offer the ability to resume it...  Look in its
Downloads window.  If the download was interrupted, an
arrow/resume icon should appear on the right side.  Click that
and it will resume.

Another option is to use the Unix tool "curl", from
Terminal.  In Terminal, paste this command in:

curl -LO
http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/061-9756.20101110.Myjo5/MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.5.dmg

Careful -- that's all one line and is case sensitive.  You
can interrupt the download by hitting ^C (control c).  You can
resume the download simply by repeating the command (just hit the
up-arrow to get it back, no need to re-copy and paste).

You can learn more about curl by issuing the command "man
curl".

Such devices should be *disconnected* when installing Apple updates.
Having such connected can sometimes cause Apple's installer to hang
for a long time, while it's looking around for components. They can
also cause difficulties if the Mac's firmware is being updated
because that process often includes "zapping" the nvram -- which can

Yes. I am absolutely positive of this. No modern hard drive could ever be
damaged by a system software update. Remotely, you could have a damaged disk
directory, but that's recoverable simply be either repairing the disk directory
or reformmating the disk.

If Software Update messed up your computer and subsequent downloads of the
standalone combo updater were corrupted, you have local network problems, such
as a damaged router or ethernet interface, or some sort of problems with your
isp.

walter, if the hard drive locked up as you say, then it can be only one of
two things, software, so a temporary issue, or a coincidental hardware
failure.

That this happened during the 10.6.5 update is largely coincidental. A software
update CAN NOT KILL A HARD DRIVE.

The drive was ready to go, and probably the sustained disk activity of the
update put it over the edge.

I do not believe that any of the Apple mirrors are currently offering
corrupted updates. The ones I've downloaded this morning are all
intact, and show their original dates.

IOW, it is your download that was faulty. Redo. Or better - just
use Software Update to get and apply it.

MyLivingDesktop was behaving oddly and i confirmed with the
programmer for MLD that the latest update did indeed break something
and that apple tech is working on an update.

Ok. So there's a bug in either the OS or MLD that needs to be
addressed. That's nothing to do with a corrupted download.

Moving desktop backgrounds? Really? I donno, I think that would
make me want to stick a fork thru my skull, or at least go shrieking
into the night... Wasn't there a gizmo that animated all the icons
on your desktop, back in the OS 8/9 days? I seem to remember playing
with it; having it drag my machine to its knees. Don't mind me. I
still miss Forker.

My downloaded updater .img mounted and installed properly & updated my

And then I got a grey screen with a flashing "?" when I restarted and
booting the iMac from the Drive Genius DVD, the original iMac system disk,

2007 2.8 GHz Extreme just two months out of AppleCare so it cost me to get

If the disk image doesn't mount in Finder it's corrupted and no utility or
program will fix this, moreover you would have to be just plain insane to rely
on a corrupted disk image for a SYTEM UPDATE!!! =8-0

Trash it, and get another copy. It's ok...Apple will make more...

On second thought, instead of messing around with Safe Mode, I'll just
wait a week or two for Apple to fix the package and try then.
