Well any old wifi router will do, but given your friends geometry, I wonder if
there's a way to run an ethernet cable over to the old section of the house?

DSL In ->Existing Wifi===ethernetNew Wifi

It's a wee bit more complicated since you need to configure the second Wifi as
a network extender, but that is pretty easy with most any model. Besides, if
you're extending it via WiFi it'll also need special configuration anyway.

Has your friend considered a simpler solution, like putting on an extended
range antenna, or putting the DSL router in a more central location, up near
the ceiling?

Extending a network

2012-09-13 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: A friend has Verizon DSL (because FiOS isn’t available within the
city limits, I don’t know why), and the modem, or whatever its equivalent is
for DSL, generates the wireless network in his house. He wants to extend that
network so the rest of the house gets better signal strength, but there’s an
exterior brick wall between where Verizon’s device is (in a newer addition to
the house) and where the rest of the house is. I believe it will be possible to
place the new device in such a way that it can pick up the current signal
through a doorway, but I’m not 100% certain of that. So: will any wireless
router do the trick, or should he be looking at some specific features in the
extender? And are there any configuration points to bear in mind?

As always, my thanks in advance!
