CCC clones are bootable

IF the original is bootable

CCC will tell you it will be bootable

No need to check anything

It CANNOT make the unbootable, bootable.

Don't give false hope..

THIS since at least "Classic" OS-9, c. 2000

Thru OS-X 10.9 Mavericks

There’s a checkbox in CCC to make the clone bootable. It’s checked by default
so most people never notice it.

Yes the disk also needs a boot partition. I think repartitioning the backup
drive (which will also reformat the drive), and then redoing the clone is a
very good idea.

Re: Trouble booting from external drive

2016-06-24 Thread 375GTB .
My late 2009 Mac Mini 2.53Ghz. works FINE with original 4GB RAM and 10.9
Mavericks.

As it did (and DOES) with 10.6 Snow Leopard..From LaCie d2 Quadra with
FireWire 800

320GB WD 7200 rpm HDD x2...one IDE and one SATA..

The slow internal 5400 rpm 320GB 2.5" drive is partitioned to be the Time
Machine Backups.

I have no iOS devices, so Yosemite and El Kapitain are of no use to me.

10.9 gets regular updates..

10.6 has Rosetta..

So I'm quite satisfied...

10.7 Liar works fine from my $25 2007 white MacBook... 32 bit...

4GB RAM but only uses 3.3GB...

So cannot be updated OS wise...

Cheers

I like the older Carbon Copy Cloner, from OWC...

It's cloned everything from Classic OS-9.2.2 to OS-10.9, here.

1999 PowerBook G3/400 to the Mac Mini...

The newer CCC you pay for has more bells and whistles

Well, it sounds unlikely, but if it's factory formatted, maybe there's some
quirk that gets in the way; a GUID hard drive with a cloned OSX, connected
thru firewire, should boot the same Mac flawlessly (or at the very least be
recognized at boot screen). It's odd.

That's why you could try to format it yourself, and repeat the backup (time
consuming, I know, but I can't think of anything else...).

Which software did you use for cloning?
I seem to remember there's something that needs to be copied (or fixed) for
a cloned OSX to be bootable; hence not all clones are born equal.
Using Carbon Copy Cloner I always had successfully booting clones.

One question: the OSX you're trying to boot from the external, is a backup
of your iMac hard drive?
Or is it an OSX you installed onto it from a different source?

Oh, and is it the external HD just one partition, or has it more than one?

According to Everymac.com, the Early 2008 iMac takes up to 6 GB Ram:

I personally tested such iMac with Snow Leopard and just 2 GB, and it can
slow down even on minor using (Firefox with many tabs open).
4 GB should be enough for most purposes, save for video editing, heavy

Check the Disk partition scheme on the OWC drive. I’ll lay odds its FAT32 not
GUID. To fix this you have to go into Disk utility, select the drive (not the

Trouble booting from external drive

2016-06-22 Thread Russell Courtenay
Recently got a NewerTech 1TB FireWire drive from OWC for backup (my first NEW
accessory purchase in years!) but figured I should partition my internal drive
for El Capitan, Snow Leopard and Data as it is a 2008 iMac and will not be
upgrading further in OS. On 2 gigs of ram it is already really slow on El Cap
so I want to try it on Snow Leopard.

Backed up and tried the restart to boot from the NewerTech drive and
got the circle X symbol and it booted from the internal drive. Ran Disk Utility
on the external drive, it made some minor fixes, same thing.

I won't be able to try again till tomorrow night but what do I try next?

The only other problem I've had with this drive is I cannot unmount it, when I
want to disconnect it I have to shut down the computer or I get the warning
that it is 'in use'. Not sure what is up with that either...

Beware, flash drives have two drawbacks:

- Their speed are slower than HDs. But if the backup is once in a while,
that could be fine.

- They are way less reliable than HDs. Again, that could be fine for
somebody, but I wouldn't feel good knowing that my backup could become
corrupted anytime.
IMO, that risk is not worth for a handful of dollars saved. Backup are for
safety and peace of mind, an unsafe back is no real backup.

however many Gbs they need and put it in a USB Card reader plugged into the

External Drive for OS 10.4 Tiger

2015-01-15 Thread Al Poulin

Can’t new external hard drives be formated or otherwise made to work with
OS X 10.4 Tiger? I do not understand why not.

A user group member wants to buy an external hard drive to back up her old
iMac with 10.4 Tiger. It seems that models available at the Apple Store,
Best Buy, and other outlets specify OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard
or later. This is with models like Seagate Slim and LaCie Porsche, whether
USB bus powered or with power adaptor.

I see that macsales.com/OWC has external drives that accommodate
everything from Mac OS 8.6 to the latest OS X.

You need 500 for the SuperDuper back up. And the eDrive partition will be as
small as Disk Utility will allow you to make. I would put it on a USB thumb

2012-09-24 Thread janesprando
I just bought a new 2T external drive to use for my iMac back up. I use
SuperDuper to back up and of course, Time Machine. So at least 2 partitions.
Now throw this into the mix: TechToolPro.

Micromat suggests I make an edrive of TTP to use as a start up drive. ( From
Micromat: Note that the eDrive is a preferable option to the DVD (for 10.6,
which I am using), being faster, more functional, and easier to update. Because
it appears that Apple is no longer going to update the boot DVD that we use,
the eDrive will be more compatible moving forward.)

Micromat suggested that I make a partition on my internal drive for the edrive.
But wouldn't I have to erase the whole drive and start over?

So, how large should the partitions be for a SuperDuper back up (I have a 500
gig hard drive), Time machine and TechToolPro edrive?

I am also wondering if I should add a 4th partition and leave it blank for
future use.

Yeah, go to http://8.quark.com/, you can download a free trial. You can
upgrade from your earlier version of Quark. Take a look at what they can
do re Flash... a lot of great info links on their site. The thing about
InDesign is that their conversion to web layout from any given page
layout is pretty much limited to simple 'brochure' type layouts,
according to reviews, while Quark 8 has tons of interactivity functions.

http://8.quark.com/design_across_media.html

Check out how you can integrate with PS and other adobe apps
http://8.quark.com/cs_integration/

Don't forget, you can get Q8 several hundred dollars cheaper when you
upgrade from an earlier version (assuming you paid for it haha)

Earlier you said "...because I know that I won't get around to backing
things up on CDs and DVDs."
I have an external OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro hard drive, 1Tb... I just
drag-drop files I'm working on to it at least 2-3 times a day. No
sweat. You just have to kind of scare yourself and get into the habit of
backing up. About 3-4 months ago my G4 QuickSilver hd died on me... but,
all I lost was a ton of emails, since I've been backing up my stuff all
along, since 1996... I have over 200 CDs and DVDs with all my graphic
work done over the years... all of that is also on my external hard
drive, making it a snap to find any file really quickly, a real time
saver compared to rifling through a ton of CDs.

I also have a network of macs available since I have deadlines and can't
afford to have a mac die... the day the G4 died, I promptly went out and
got a G5 tower second hand and it's been great, really powerful. So, I
didn't miss a beat... I was busy designing a 40-page web site and have
that all backed up incIuding on my G4 Titanium Powerbook, ready to step
in at any time.

I buy all my macs (12 and counting) second hand and never throw any out.
Those legacy macs can be really useful... my Wacom tablet, printer and
scanner are unusable in OS X but I have an old mac on my network which
runs then on Mac OS 8.6

Re: External Drive

2010-06-03 Thread Kathy K
If I'd clued in that .11 was greater than .8, then indeed I would
have realized I had the minimum OS required. But I don't have an IT
brain, and never tried to determine what it was that confused me
about the whole upgrade point system. Rather, I am more frequently
found helping one of my kids with math homework, where in their
world .11 is less than .8 — at least decimals I know. Bruce's
explanation was great—I'll remember how that works now.

I just bought Snow Leopard today, so once I get everything backed up,
that's what I'll be going to. Also purchased an external drive. I
know Glenn said he didn't like Seagate, but Seagate has been fine in
the past for me. I do have an old Seagate external drive still
trucking over here, just not big enough anymore. Anyway, I was happy
to find the 1TB Seagate FreeAgent for Mac drive for $99 on the shelf
at my local BestBuy.

I will check out otherworldcomputing too. I still need to purchase
ram. I'm interested in Time Machine, because I know that I won't get
around to backing things up on CDs and DVDs. One can always hope
though. Maybe after I do my taxes...

'cs3 snow leopard' for example)

Go to http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/
You can get all manner of Mac stuff at decent prices there. I
bought memory, an external hard drive and an external burner.

You said: "specs that 10.4.8 is the minimum OS needed."
The higher the number, the most recent the software is... kinds
makes sense, right? So if you have something higher, like 10.4.11,
that'll work. In other words 'minimum' really means 'equal to or
greater than'

Re backing up, I use CDs, DVDs and an external hd... I can't be
bothered with Time Machine, I do it all manually. I back up
important stuff every day to the external HD, and then burn to CD/
DVD every couple of weeks (you should back up to more than one form
of media since you never know when any given hard drive is going to
die. Also have duplicate back-ups in more than one location... in
some other residence I mean

Kathy K wrote:

2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB Memory
Hard Drive Capacity: 232.57 GB, Available: 116.82 GB

I use this computer for graphic design/illustration, family
photos, and internet-based games (social facebook kind of games).

I would like to get an external drive to back up all my graphics
work and photos. I've been looking at the Seagate FreeAgent drives
(1TB-2TB) but I'm seeing in the specs that 10.4.8 is the minimum
OS needed. Is this just for the purpose of using TimeMachine? Or
do I need 10.4.8 just to dump files on the drive?

Also, it seems any external drive will work with a Mac, it's just
a matter of reformatting if it's a PC drive—correct? But do I
really have to by a Mac drive to make use of TimeMachine? Will
TimeMachine not recognize other Mac-formatted drives?

I was mainly looking at Seagate because of the 5yr warranty,
decent reviews, and Mac compatibility. What other drives should I
consider?

I would like to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard and perhaps later 10.6
Snow Leopard. Couldn't I get one of these drives now, manually
back up files to it by drag/drop, then upgrade to 10.5 and begin
using TimeMachine then? Because a lot of my stuff is not backed up
anywhere, I do want to back everything up before doing an OS upgrade.

Along with the OS upgrade, I'd also like to add 2 GB Memory, as
this computer can be pretty sluggish. I currently have 1 GB in
each of the two banks—so that means buying 2 new 2 GBs to replace
the 2 1 GB.

I have also considered upgrading the external drive (faster and
larger) but don't know what to do there.

I don't have loads of $ to spend, and also need to know that my
graphics software is going to be compatible with the OS upgrade.
(Adobe CS3, and InDesign CS2, Quark 7, Freehand MXa—yes, the suite
needs upgrading and yes I'm still attached to Freehand.)

If you've read all the way through—I thank you. If you're
considering a reply—I thank you doubly!

To put a finer point on this, Apple calls the versions one pays for,
such as 10.2, 10.6 "upgrades." The free changes denoted with the
second decimal such as 10.6.2 are "updates."

You should be getting CS5 adobe stuff. Forget Tiger (10.4 and Leopard

Go to http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/
You can get all manner of Mac stuff at decent prices there. I bought
memory, an external hard drive and an external burner.

It's actually a pretty standard version numbering style in the IT industry.

It goes :

Major.Major minor.minor.subminor (if you have that.) Each step is a whole
integer.

Major is for truly significant changes: OS 7, OS 8, OS 9, OS 10

Major minor is for significant changes within the major. 10.2, 10.4, 10.5, etc.

Apple has mostly, since OS 7.6, sold each of these as a paid upgrade. A few
were updates, like 8.0-8.1, 9.0-9.2.2 and 10.0-10.1, but 8.1 to 8.6 was paid,
and every OSX version since 10.2 was paid.

Minor are the updates within a paid update, they're free (at least Apple's
are). 10.4.1-10.4.11 Eleven separate updates were shipped for 10.4 before 10.5
was released.

Subminor (Apple doesn't use these, but other companies, like Oracle, do)
usually means a bug fix that may be applicable only to a sub-population of
users, or it may mean a very small, often single-issue update.

Not all companies use all the steps and what you pay for and what you get for
free varies.

Re: External Drive

2010-05-31 Thread Glenn Peterson
Kathy,

I am going to try to answer some of the HD questions that you have. The
Adobe issues will have to be answered by someone much more aware of that
then I am.

I have used numerous external HD¹s with my mac, they do work very well
most of the time. Everything but a Seagate unfortunately. I do not know
about the 10.4.8 minimum requirement but it is not for Time Machine, that
arrived with 10.5 to my knowledge. Some external HD¹s require the Intel CPU
to be able to draw enough power once they are plugged in, keep that in mind.

You can format a pc hard drive as a mac format using Disk Utility but if
you have a choice I would not purchase a hd that does not list the Mac OS as
one of it¹s requirements unless you don¹t mind taking it back to the store
if there is an issue.

The most important thing you can do is get something to backup on right
now even if it¹s just a flash drive or cheap one and you pickup a different
one later. Most computers are a power hiccup or an oops away from data
disaster. Backup onto something today if you have not done so previously
and put it into your regular activities however you decide to do it. You
can use TM later after you have done your update.

files to it by drag/drop, then upgrade to 10.5 and begin using
TimeMachine then? Because a lot of my stuff is not backed up
anywhere, I do want to back everything up before doing an OS upgrade.

Along with the OS upgrade, I'd also like to add 2 GB Memory, as this
computer can be pretty sluggish. I currently have 1 GB in each of the
two banks—so that means buying 2 new 2 GBs to replace the 2 1 GB.

If you're considering
a reply—I thank you doubly!

Re: booting 20" G4 iMac to external drive

2009-11-11 Thread Robert Pangrazio
My previous response was very cryptic, sorry about that.

If you can tell me what the directory is that the music is in, I can give
you better step by step instructions.

Or how much space do you have free on your mac books hd?

2009-11-11 Thread Robert Pangrazio
The suggestion I would make is from a unix standpoint.

Open terminal(in Applications/Terminal)

change to the directory containing your music folder.

sudo cp - R (name of music folder) ~
sudo chmod -R 777 (name of music folder)

That will give you access to the folder in your home directory on your mac
book.

Re: booting 20" G4 iMac to external drive

2009-11-11 Thread Patrick

Thanks for the help, Jaal & Ashgrove!
I tried a couple of the options from Jaal's link:
Bypass startup drive and boot from external (or CD) CMD-OPT-SHIFT-
DELETE
Boot from CD (Most late model Apples) . C

Start in Firewire drive mode... T

The 1st & 2nd didn't do anything, but the "T" put it into Firewire
drive mode. I tried Disk Utility (running from my MacBook), and it
looked (according to DU) like I was fixin' stuff. But it still can't
boot from the internal HD (perhaps the System is trashed?).
Next, I decided to see if I could access the tunes from my MacBook.
While I can find the Music folders after opening the User folder, I
don't have permission to access the Music Folder content.
How do I login to User Accounts on the iMac internal HD when I'm
accessing it via FireWire drive mode, from my MacBook. I don't see
where I can input the appropriate passwords.
Further suggestions?

It is not a blue screen, but rather a light gray screen, with a big
gray apple, and the "pinwheel" just keeps spinning ... I think the OS
is 10.4.11

Re: booting 20" G4 iMac to external drive

2009-11-10 Thread Ashgrove

Patrick,

G4 Macs can be booted from an external FW drive, but not USB.
Theoretically, it's possible to bypass that limitation by pressing
"Option" during boot time and choosing the USB drive, but that has
never worked for me.

If the internal drive is gone, the iMac will search for a bootable
volume and will boot directly from the FW. If that doesn't happen, try
the "Option" key routine. You could also use a utility like Disk
Warrior to find out if the internal HDD can be saved --I have seen it
work miracles. (Of course, once a HDD is really dead, it's bye-bye
time.)

Hope it helps.

Felix

booting 20" G4 iMac to external drive

2009-11-10 Thread Patrick

Hi, My ol' G4 20" iMac has been collecting dust as family members seem
to prefer the convenience of laptops. My wife suddenly wants to load
up her iPod Touch with tunes she had on the old iMac, but I'm getting
an "infinite" blue screen when I try to boot it up. Perhaps the
internal HD is fried. If the internal battery is dead, could that
cause it not to boot?
Anyway, I was hoping to boot the machine up with an external HD (an
old clone of the internal HD has some of the tunes she wants) but
haven't been successful. So:
What are the appropriate key combinations to get a booting iMac to
find an external HD and boot from that? Are either FW or USB
appropriate?
Thanks -- it's terrible forgetting basic troubleshooting techniques!
