I would replace any unpowered hubs with powered hubs. That should leave
you with only the 2 USB ports on the keyboard as unpowered ports. I
would use these for low-power items such as mice, flash drives, etc. I
have my Kensington Trackball and my Griffin PowerMate connected to the
ones on my keyboard.

Remember the USB Standard has a limit of 5 hubs, and a total length of
30 meters/98 feet for all cables.

Are Hubs 1 & 3 above POWERED hubs?

I bought a powered hub that had 13 USB ports; it crapped out within 30 days.

Re: How many USB ports is normal to have?

2010-11-04 Thread ./aal
2 things to keep in mind
1)
USB2.0 has a max claimed speed of 480mbps
that is NOT per device
that is total per host(per motherboard mounted controller, not per port)
which means if you access more than one thing at a time you are
dividing the speed

2)
only use powered USB hubs (you probly know this)
I have replaced motherboards with burnt USB chips because someone had
a xmas tree spidering out of their unpowered hubs

Re: How many USB ports is normal to have?

2010-11-04 Thread Mike Linnett
That is quite a few!
If the hard drives/DVD drive have a FireWire interface too, try using that
instead? You'll get better transfer speeds that way too. If not, maybe when
they die/get replaced that'll be something to look at?
Otherwise, looks like you actually need all those ports to avoid
plugging/unplugging things a lot, so who cares if it's "normal"?
