Oops, sorry, I meant the older one, meaning the 1.83 ghz machine. I
had always understood that it can go to 2G, which is what Apple says,
but got thrown today when I saw LEM give both 3 and 4 on different
pages. And I have now downloaded MacTracker as Harry suggested, for
another perspective. So are you implying that it's possible to put in
more than Apple's stated maximum? How can that be?

--Bill

Apple only lists what is available at time of manufacture/design. They
won't go back and update after ram makers make bigger chips.

Apples stated maximum ram is based on the module sizes available at the
time that they were able to test. And sometimes in the event of multiple
configurations of the same machine, ie the eMac, some were able to take
only 1 gig, others 2 gig, in order to avoid confusion, Apple continued
to list max memory at only 1 gig even though a few models could take 2
gig. I have 2 gig installed in my 1.42 GHz eMac and 2 gig installed in 3
different eMacs at my place of work. 1 is a 1.42 like mine and 2 are
1.25 GHz models.

It occasionally happens, not always. Apple designs its machine with
RAM that is available at the time. In a year or so, the RAM
manufacturers improve their technology, and they sell higher capacity
RAM. The newer RAM is usually, not always, backward compatible into
Apple's original design. I cannot address the technical details of
how this happens. So I would depend on Crucial and OWC to give
accurate, up to date info. After all, they have money back
policies.

Not to be flip, but do you mean the first in the list of two or the
first model built? In any case, I'd look at the Apple specs on their
web site. That reflects the status of available RAM at the time of
design. I'd also look at what both Crucial, and Macsales (OWC) and
maybe other reputable vendors are willing to sell for the maximum.
That could more than the Apple spec.

So how much memory does it take?

2010-03-19 Thread William Spencer
Hi there: I'm getting conflicting information about how far I can expand the
RAM in the earlier of the two machines listed below. Some sources say 2G, some
say 3G, some say 4G. LEM says both 3 and 4 on different pages. Who's right?
Thanks!
