Re: Using MS Windows
My thanks to all for the very valuable insights and suggestions. The fundamental problem resolved itself with no action required on my part, partly because I had misunderstood the original directive and partly because I awoke to the fact that my wife's work computer is only five miles away and fully accessible to me for the one thing I (thought I) had to do immediately. This list is the greatest! Again, thank you all, and an extra yodel to Dan Knight for doing it so well and for so long. Yes but, as far as I understood, ONLY if my data reside in just the only ONE partition. What I thought I'd do (and what would have been much user-friendly), would be telling Bootcamp "Would you kindly* install on the partition I tell you to use?". Bootcamp creates a separate partition for Windows, and you can "boot" into it natively, just like you would on a PC or OS X. Parallels or Fusion will allow you to start up Windows in a virtual machine inside OS X, which is handy if you need to use applications from both operating systems simultaneously, or would prefer to use Windows only when you have to. While you can use a bootcamp partition to run Parallels/Fusion, I would recommend that you not do so, as it will be much slower with your hard drive thrashing between two partitions. Using a virtual machine file is a much faster way to go, and is also variable in size with the amount of virtualized storage being used, so you're not locking away a good portion of your hard drive like you would by making a separate partition. I have done the Bootcamp route, and VMWare Fusion using both a bootcamp partition, and a virtual machine file. I don't have any experience with Parallels, so you'll have to find info on that from others. I don't think I would be spending a penny of my own money, if your job requires you to do things with Windows; doesn't your organization have an IT team? Used Pentium 4s might be a bit too slow, however depending on if you want to put money into it a used Thinkpad T60(\61), T400(401) or a Latitude E6400\6500 can be picked up for $100-$200 here with Windows 7 and such already on it, and (sorry for this) the E6400\T400 have a faster processor than the 1.83 GHz iMac. If they are making you buy the application as well you should be looking for another job. They are not looking for a worker they are looking for a patsy. I agree. Buy a cheap PC. Don't pollute your iMac. Just don't get an HP whatever you do. Using MS Windows
Hi there: Today is my first day with my new employer, and there are things I have to do for them that require using Windows. Since I do not have a work computer yet I seem to be in the unhappy position of having to install Windows on the 1.83 iMac listed below. This is completely new territory for me, so could someone please direct me to a good source of information on what version of Windows I need to obtain, and basically everything I need to know about dealing with this unfortunate development. Basic, meaning cheap, is fine with me. As always, my thanks in advance! *** Bill Spencer in Maryland IMac Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz/2 g RAM/Mountain Lion IMac Core 2 Duo 1.83 ghz/2 g RAM/Lion [10.7.5] -- -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs.
