Re: Using MS Windows

2013-07-16 Thread Bill Spencer
My thanks to all for the very valuable insights and suggestions. The
fundamental problem resolved itself with no action required on my part,
partly because I had misunderstood the original directive and partly
because I awoke to the fact that my wife's work computer is only five miles
away and fully accessible to me for the one thing I (thought I) had to do
immediately.

This list is the greatest! Again, thank you all, and an extra yodel to Dan
Knight for doing it so well and for so long.

This "horse" has been beaten to death... and there's still people loving
partitions, and other who do not. :-)

Let's just say I like having my stuff well organized, thus having them in
separate partitions helps that:
- I know where particular stuff resides
- It makes it for faster searches
- It makes it for faster backups
- When directory corruption happens, it's just on one partition, and it's
easier to repair
- Having a partition with another install of OSX, allows me to boot from
there and makes for easier HD maintenance / troubleshoot

I'm perfectly aware this won't work for everybody; it just suits my way of
thinking.

I'll second this suggestion.

VirtualBox is an excellent way of managing Windows on a Mac…it's our
institutional go-to solution because many people have needs for windows based
progams, and we have a few University wide systems that require Windows to run
certain web applications. (And yes, I know just how stupid that sounds!)

I have been partitioning my HDs since my Beige PowerMac G3.

When I bought the iMac I'm using right now, I didn't know about Bootcamp
being "picky".
Hence I did what I usually do, I partitioned its HD into 6 partitions
(included one for Bootcamp itself) and copied/installed all my data and
apps.
Only AFTER this, I discovered Bootcamp wants a HD with just one partition;
thus, to comply with that I would need to reformat my HD.

Yes but, as far as I understood, ONLY if my data reside in just the only ONE
partition.

What I thought I'd do (and what would have been much user-friendly), would
be telling Bootcamp "Would you kindly* install on the partition I tell you
to use?".
Alas, that's not the way it works (and, being free, one cannot even
complain. ;-)

If you know differently, please let me know.

I'm not sure what kind of experiences the others have had, but
depending on what you need Windows for, you could use Bootcamp or
Parallels/Fusion. Bootcamp creates a separate partition for Windows,
and you can "boot" into it natively, just like you would on a PC or OS
X. Parallels or Fusion will allow you to start up Windows in a virtual
machine inside OS X, which is handy if you need to use applications
from both operating systems simultaneously, or would prefer to use
Windows only when you have to. While you can use a bootcamp partition
to run Parallels/Fusion, I would recommend that you not do so, as it
will be much slower with your hard drive thrashing between two
partitions. Using a virtual machine file is a much faster way to go,
and is also variable in size with the amount of virtualized storage
being used, so you're not locking away a good portion of your hard
drive like you would by making a separate partition.

I have done the Bootcamp route, and VMWare Fusion using both a
bootcamp partition, and a virtual machine file. I don't have any
experience with Parallels, so you'll have to find info on that from
others.

I don't think I would be spending a penny of my own money, if your job
requires you to do things with Windows; doesn't your organization have
an IT team? Light a fire under them!

Re: Using MS Windows

2013-07-09 Thread Christopher Satterfield
Used Pentium 4s might be a bit too slow, however depending on if you want
to put money into it a used Thinkpad T60(\61), T400(401) or a Latitude
E6400\6500 can be picked up for $100-$200 here with Windows 7 and such
already on it, and (sorry for this) the E6400\T400 have a faster processor
than the 1.83 GHz iMac. When you do get a proper work computer you can just
sell off anything like these for right around what you paid, possibly a bit
more.
