G'day Kelly.

1. The memory slots are at the centre bottom of the iMac, behind what looks
like a ventilation grid. You have to remove the Phillips head screws to remove
the cover. Buy and insert a 2 GB module, along with one of your existing 512
MB modules. Try watching this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD2yMTzh3gk&feature=player_embedded#!

2. I would backup your existing system before upgrading to Snow Leopard.
Occasionally upgrades fail, and you'll lose everything because the only way to
recover is to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install. Go straight to
Snow Leopard, not Leopard. Purchase Snow Leopard in boxed format from the
previous link I sent.

3. Once Snow Leopard is installed, you might want to update to Lion. I find
Lion very nice to use, but still with a few bugs. Update 10.7.3 when it comes
out should nail down most of the remaining small bugs. Lion is upgraded to over
the internet from apple.

http://www.apple.com/support/lion/installrecovery/

When you install Snow Leopard and update it to 10.6.8, an App Store is
installed in your Dock. This is used to purchase and update to Lion via the
internet. You really need a fairly fast internet link for this, as it's about a
1 GB download.

Kelly, this might help you understand about the memory limitations of your
iMac.

Whilst it can accept up to 4GB ram, the recommended amount is 3 GB, and you
could simply pull one 512MB stick and insert a 2GB module for 2 1/2 GB

G'day Kelly

As I see it, you need three things.

1. a backup system

2. More memory

3. An updated OS, with perian, flip4mac, & latest Flash driver.

Addressing 1. If you can afford it, I would buy one of these…

http://www.newertech.com/products/ministack.php

Unfortunately the older model seems to have been discontinued, and the new one
not yet released. The benefit of them is they are quietly fan cooled (heating
can cause a problem in many external cases, as I've found to my detriment), and
they automatically turn on and off when your Mac does. Use the Firewire 400
connection. If you shop around you might get an older case, preferably fit it
with at least a hard disk as large as your iMac drive, or larger. If you want
to upgrade to Lion in the future, and use Time Machine instead of CCC, you
should get a drive at least one and a half times larger. Use the free Carbon
Copy Cloner, http://www.bombich.com/download.html to back up as frequently as
you like. I suggest daily. Personally I've got three ministacks, with
TimeMachine hourly backup, and CCC daily and weekly backup. Don't use Western
Digital hard drives in the cases; I suggest Seagate or Samsung.

Addressing 2. Looks like you'll have to take out at least one of the 512MB
sticks, and preferably replace it with a 2 GB stick. I'm in Oz, but I buy my
ram from OWC in the States.

Addressing 3. You can still buy Snow Leopard from Apple,
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A and provided you've got a fast
enough internet link, update to Lion electronically. Do this after you've
backed up your old system.

Hi there,

I second everything Brian says, except for a couple of things.

1) That iMac model can only address 3GB of RAM. Bumping it up to the
full 4GB could add an infinitesimal speed bump (I know this from first
hand experience, having a maxed out 17" model), but it's not worth it
in the end. A single 2GB would be the best way to unleash this Mac.

2) I would suggest upgrading to Snow Leopard only, not Lion. Snow
Leopard is a wonderful, smooth, stable OS. Lion is a mixed bag, too
much of a work in progress, at least for my taste. I'm actually
happier using Windows 7 or my latest discovery, Linux Mint (the first
out-of-the-box-usable, geeks-be-darned Linux distro I have ever
tried), than Lion. But that could be just me, of course.

My understanding was that as soon as Lion was released Leopard was no
longer supported.

If I'm lookiing at the correct everymac.com entry for your system than
you could also upgrade to either Snow Leopard (on its way out) or
Lion, the currently supported version of OS X.

Not sure what would be the best approach for you in your situation.
For one thing, to be safe I'd recommend that you backup your system
before upgrading, but you indicated in your earlier post that you
weren't sure how to do that.

Another thing is that Lion is installed from the Internet, not from a
DVD as earlier versions of OS X were. But you need to have Snow
Leopard installed in order to install Lion from the Apple App store.
Tedious for someone who doesn't enjoy futzing with computers for its
own sake.

Think I'll step back and see what advice others might offer.

I would be willing to bet that the problem is viewing video on the web.
Thats because Tiger is too old now, and doesn't support the latest Flash
Player. You could safely update to Leopard without upgrading the ram, but
you would soon need to upgrade that as well, because Leopard is on it's way
out.

I would definitely upgrade the ram to at least 2GB, and update the OS to
the newest, 10.7 Lion.

You've got a great computer there, just an old OS.

G'day Listers

I sent Kelly offlist instructions of how to take screen shots of the 'About
this Mac' window

First the good news, Kellys got a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.11

Second, the bad news, it's only got standard 1 GB DDR2 ram.

1. Kelly, your Mac should handle video fine, except you might have a lack of
memory problem.. You might try the Perian and Flip4Mac Quicktime extensions tho.

http://perian.org/

http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4macwmv

There's a link on the Flip4Mac page to a version suited to 10.4

2. Your Mac can run any version of OS X right up to Lion.

3. I suggest you upgrade your ram to 2 or 3 GB (keeping your present 1 GB if
it's a single stick, which from memory they were).
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_2006

You can add a single 2 GB Stick of ram for $33.99 (to make 3 GB) or a 1 GB
stick for $18.99 (to make 2 GB), or even throw away the 1 GB and go for 4 GB
($64.99), all depending on what you can afford.

A golden rule is the more ram the better, but you'll need to check what memory
configuration you've got.

To check the memory, open the 'About this Mac' again, and click on the 'more
info' button. You'll get a list of details. Under 'Hardware' choose 'Memory'.
You'll get something like…

Memory Slots

DIMM0 1GB DDR2
DIMM1

However, if you get

DIMM0 512 MB DDR2
DIMM1 512 MB DDR2

then you'll need to throw away the sticks and replace both. You'll need help
probably to replace the sticks, they can be hard to get out and insert.

In addition, sometimes videos won't play happily with quicktime without plug in

It's quite possible that your Mac is so old it cannot handle the
latest codecs well. (A codec is the bit of software that decodes the
video so QuickTime can display it). That's certainly a problem with
the oldest iMac G3 and older iMac G4 models. But to really tell, we
need more information.

You haven't actually said what the problem is. "problems with
viewing videos" could mean anything from direct error messages saying
you cannot view the video at all, to just stuttering. Can you be
more specific as to exactly what's not working correctly?

What is the source of the video -- is this something sitting on your
HD? Or it is a CD or DVD? Or is it from the 'net? If the latter,
how 'bout a sample URL so we can take a look?

What application are you using to play the video?

And while we're at it, please tell us about your iMac: exactly what
model is it, what year, how fast, how much memory, etc... If you're
not sure, take a look at the iMacs listed here:
