[IRCA] TPs for 17 Jan

2008-01-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Not as good this morning, I fear (listened off and on from 1430 to
1550UT). The regulars all delivered a bit of audio at various
times, but nothing was consistently worthwhile.

Asian unless indicated otherwise:

Darn good audio, if briefly: none

Reasonable audio (though often battling w/splash): none really,
although the ones in the next category may have briefly risen to the occasion.

Not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: 594,
747,774, 828, 1566

Burbles in the splatter: 279, 612 DU

strong carrier, no audio: 639, 855 (hum)

This evening (18 Jan 0615UTC), traces of audio on 738, traces of a
carrier on 1215 in the opposite direction, and carriers on 846, 1017
and 1098

best wishes,

Nick

Rob,

As the culprit who kicked off the whole Ultralight Revolution, I am
going to make it my top priority that YOU GET your SRF-39FP prison radio,
even
if I have to give you mine.

Kevin, Bruce, Gil, Joe, and all my other "partners in crime," are you
all listening? Rob needs a prison radio! This is one super-motivated
Ultralight dude, brothers, and it's high time we get him what he deserves.
I'll
gladly reimburse anybody who comes up with an SRF-39FP for Rob, but let's show
this Super Canadian that Americans can be just as fanatical as Canadians,
when it comes to Ultralight Radio enthusiasm.

Brothers, if you don't come up with an SRF-39FP ASAP, you may be forced
to read more of my awful poetry so let's all give that American eBay
seller some serious business, and nail down some SRF-39FP's for Rob, and other
deserving members of the revolution.

Thanks, Scott! I hadn't seen this message when I posted my previous
message, but it looks like we've converged on the same solution. :-)
I think it's time to lay this one gently to rest! It's not a new one
here anyway - I logged WPLY (with a dual WPLY/WVPO ID) back in Feb.
2007.

2008-01-17 Thread Barry McLarnon
Thanks for all of your comments - the mystery deepens!

After more listening, I've concluded that I was mistaken about the
"newsradio" bit. There is a "new" in there, I think, but it's not
"newsradio". As for the call, none of the suggestions (WPLY, WDLM,
WFIR, WLPR, etc) sound quite right to me. But I have a theory. I
think WPLY may be the right answer, but that's not the call used in
this particular ID. WPLY simulcasts WVPO-840, and I think it may be
"new 840-960 WVPO... talk radio" - though I must admit, it doesn't
sound a lot like "840" in there. That's as far as I've gotten with
it, anyway.

I've been tramping all over the tri-state (NYC) area and didn't get a
chance to sit down and give this thing a close listen until tonight. I
ran it through a whole bunch of noise reduction, and here's what I think
I hear:

There are at least two stations here, one with a woman's voice reading a
phone number that ends in "34-71." Under that, the target station fades
up with "and AM 960, WVPO, Talk Radio." There's a man's voice after
that, just before the clip ends, that says "8:31 at WV" and then the
clip cuts off.

It's true that WVPO isn't on 960 - it's 840 in Stroudsburg PA - but the
two stations simulcast with a talk format (no Air America, as it turns
out; it's Imus followed by a bunch of second-stringers) and brand as
"WVPO." The WPLY calls are used only once an hour.

That's what I hear, anyway. I'm e-mailing Barry my noise-reduced
version, which he's welcome to post...

Frank Aden - Boise, ID
Bruce Bacon - Boise County, ID

Walt Salmaniw - Victoria, BC, Canada
Dennis Vroom - Salmon Creek, WA (on a trusty SRF-59)

Special congratulations to Bjarne Mjelde in Berlevag, Norway, on hearing the
test. Although a relog for him, I was delighted to see this international
participation from outside North America in our test efforts. Thanks Bjarne.

Well GaryI am having a riot with these Crazy little things!!! I have
been DX'ing since about 1976 .at least that's when I started what could
be called Organized DX'ing. Used to Tune for Montreal Canadiens Hockey
Games much before that in the Late 60's and early 70's...yeah...I'm a Habs
Fan!! I used to pick up lots of Long Distance stations back thenbut
never really realized what I was hearing..nor did I keep track til
later on!!

In the last 10 yearsI really haven't done much AM BCB DX...but this
little Radio Craze has made it fun again!!! You don't have to thank me for
being Enthusiastic.it comes naturally!!! If I like something...I always
give it 110 % Effort...and as you can tell...I'm loving this!!

I went to EBAY to see if I could buy one of the PRISON RADIOS as
wellbut the guy selling them on EBAYstates that he will ONLY SHIP
TO USA!! What a drag.It would have been fun to pick up one of these as
well..as believe it or not.

I work in The Court Security Unit of the London Police Dept here...and my
Job is to Transport Prisoners back and forth to courtand Baby sit them
in the Cellblock at the Court House here in London. These little Radios
with the Clear case would have been a real Converstional piece at work!!! I
don't know why some of the sellers refuse to ship to us up here Maybe
they think it is too much of a hassle???

Anyway..Maybe some other seller will offer them and I can pick one up!!

Gonna go and listen for a few hours tonite and see what's happening???

I swore that I was going to leave you guys alone about Firsts and
Records for a few days, but, gee,

Allen Willie and his magic SRF-M37V just checked in with loggings,
barefoot, from St. John's Newfoundland to Sweden, Spain, Kuwait,
Monaco and Luxembourg. That's five new country Firsts and our first
European and first African loggings from North America... all onna
radio that is half the size of a deck of cards!

The intrepid Gil Stacy also has submitted our first logging of the
Dominican Republic... And Rob Ross won't take his headphones off long
enough to check which records that he has broken... today :>)

AND Dennis Vroom is currently at the Grayland Motel with pockets
bulgingly full of Ultralight radios.

Yah-hoo! Let the good times roll.

[IRCA] KCFR Denver to move from AM to FM leaving 1340 for sale

2008-01-17 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
>From the Denver Business Journal:

KCFR, Colorado Public Radio's news-and-information channel, is moving
back to the high-fidelity FM band with the purchase of a new frequency
for the station.

The main reasons for the change are "better [audio] quality and the fact
that most people expect to find public radio on the left hand side of
the FM dial," Max Wycisk, president of Centennial-based Colorado Public
Radio (CPR), said Wednesday.

CPR plans to purchase Denver station 88.1 FM from EMF Broadcasting of
Rocklin, Calif., for $8.2 million. The 88.1 signal currently carries
Christian music under the brand K-LOVE.
CPR said it will move its KCFR news channel from 1340 AM to 90.1 FM, the
frequency now used by its classical-music station, KVOD.
KVOD would then slide down the FM dial to 88.1 FM. CPR plans to put its
1340 AM frequency up for sale.

The changes will take effect this spring, subject to Federal
Communications Commission approval, CPR said.

EMF Broadcasting will continue to carry the K-LOVE programming on its
91.1 FM frequency, where K-LOVE is now simulcast.
KCFR features the national news broadcasts "All Things Considered" and
"Morning Edition," as well as talk, arts and feature programs such as
"Fresh Air," "Talk of the Nation" and "This American Life."

It also carries local news and the interview program "Colorado Matters"
and world-news broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corp.
Until 2001, CPR broadcast both news and music on a single FM frequency.
Then it split its programming into two stations, moving news to AM and
keeping music on FM.

I got one of these little fellows a few days ago, through eBay,
as a result of a posting here saying just a few were left.
It was about $15 + shipping.

It seems to live up to the hype. I can actually find space between
domestic channels, and it has good sensitivity and pretty
good nulling. I was getting WDBO Orlando 580 last night
coming past my strong local on 570, mixing with a LA with
romantic ballads, possibly HIAF up briefly though I think
they should have been off by then. On some sets here,
580 is hard to work with any usable signal.

It tunes very similarly to the way my old Radioshack TRF 12-655
behaved, as I recall it. But the absence of a usable dial scale
is somewhat annoying. The thickness of the dial pointer
is much greater than the spread on the dial of adjacent
stations. If there was a way to add a LCD freq readout,
this would be awesome.

I know it reaches 518 as I was hearing "thumping" from the
AM-mode demodulation of NavTex, and it sounded centered,
not on "edge". I haven't tried to see how high it tunes yet.

Mine came in a cardboard carton with a Koss earbud headset,
but no instruction book. It would have been interesting to read,
though I suppose, short on any real detail. Obviously it is
transparent to alleviate the hiding of contraband.

It'll be handy for sniffing around to find local noise sources.
Do I get the record for logging the most distant insulator
arcing? hi

- Bob

Re: [IRCA] Sony SRF-39FP.... So Much Fun They May Put You in Jail!

2008-01-17 Thread Gil Stacy
The current ebay vendor for the 39FP has been steadily raising the price on
the item, not by raising the cost of the radio ($14.95), but by the old ebay
vendor trick of increased shipping costs. When Kevin first published his
purchase, the shipping price was $4.95 flat. Last week, it was $5.95. This
week, $6.95. He has probably noted increased demand and increase prices
accordingly. He also lists no more than 3 available at a time, but when
those are gone, up pop 3 more. You can't find it under the model number.
Search "Sony prison". Someone (Kevin?) published a list of mail order
vendors and the cheapest price is $12.95 but with a "modest" shipping cost
of over $12.00.

Re: [IRCA] 960 Fun - Not WELI/WKCI

2008-01-17 Thread Konnie Rychalsky

Barry,
I listened to your clip many times... thru many speakers and headsets...
1) It doesn't sound like my local 960 WELI which our household listens to
daily... I've been there and our family has been featured on one of their talk
programs within the past year. Yes, WKCI is their FM sister by ownership only,
and by no means is it them, the two are completely different formats so you can
scrap that guessing by some on this list.
2) I am not hearing "Newsradio 960" as you mentioned. Instead I'm hearing:
"9-60 (Call) 'Talk Radio'" and not "news radio";
3) I cannot find on a list what I'm hearing.. but it is very likely that any
list may not yet be updated. First listen I'm gravitating to WVBR, WBBR, WBVR
or any combo with an E. Some possibilites are: WLPR-AL, WFIR-VA, even
WAVR//WATS-PA. Of course, if any list may be outdated by call letters, it's
even more likely that the formats listed surely have changed even more so.
4) Final, I can't make it out for sure.. but definately rule out WELI (WKCI).
Perhaps your recording(s) can uncover a few more clues. Good luck. It was fun,
as you said. 73s

[IRCA] Sony SRF-39FP.... So Much Fun They May Put You in Jail!

2008-01-17 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

If you are guilty of way too much Ultralight DX fun and are headed for
the slammer, Sony has just the radio for you!

Provided courtesy of Kevin Schanilec, my accomplice in serious
Ultralight DXing crime, this transparent little ancestor of the SRF-59 was
actually
designed for prison inmates... but it works just as well for those guilty of
Ultralight radio fanaticism. One of the first Sony radios to deploy the
incredible CXA1129 30-pin IC chip (responsible for the SRF-59's ridiculously
sensitive and selective performance), the SRF-39FP is just the trick for those
who
have always wondered about the SRF-59's incredible circuitry, but were
afraid to take it apart. It's the closest you'll ever come to the circuitry,
unless you are an SRF-59 alignment technician (a profession which, by the way,
appears to offer extreme job security currently).

If you would like one of these little jewels, you will need to take
your chances on eBay, because they are currently no longer in production. But
if you can track one down, I assure you that your efforts will be deeply
rewarded-- the SRF-39FP not only has a much larger tuning thumb wheel than the
SRF-59 (making the analog tuning actually fun, at least for this fanatic), but
also has an excellent alignment quality control record (my unit was
competitive with a fully aligned SRF-59 right out of the box, and every other
SRF-39FP
I have heard of was also very sensitive as received). The Chinese factory
which manufactured the SRF-39FP's apparently was a model for quality control,
and the current SRF-59 factory QC managers deserve indictment for negligence,
by comparison.

The SRF-39FP (FP means "For Prison") is a true status symbol for the
ultimate SRF-59 fanatic, and as you log your TP's, TA's and other exotic DX in
the future, you'll be ready for the slammer, on the charge of having way too
much DXing pleasure!

73 and Good Ultralight DX to All,

  Gary DeBock

[IRCA] Beverage antenna

2008-01-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Yesterday I went out to double check the angle on the beverage I
re-installed a few weeks ago. In the process, I found a couple slight
dog legs in the wire, but not bad. I did strainghten it and it seems to
be a bit better with less side lobes. The side lobes seem to be less
atrusive. There is always sidelobes, but the straighter the wire the
better.
Also I changed the WNW EWE a bit again, more towards the NW another
degree or two. I found the PVC pole had warped a bit, so the vertical
section was off a bit at an angle, so I moved it over a foot. I don't
know if it made that much difference, but the difference in a few
degrees brought in a decent signal from KBRW earlier in the season
topping KNBR, so you never know if that degree or two can make a
difference.

2008-01-17 Thread Patrick Martin
Pete,

You may be right. It may have been cx and the KLFE signal was not
present strong enough to put out the het. KLFE is not directional this
way and for years I never heard them often. It was easier to hear WAKR.
But I had to make changes in the Eastern beverage, and I started hearing
KLFE more often.

Re: [IRCA] Weekly Update of Ultralight Radio DXing Firsts and Records.

2008-01-17 Thread John Callarman
I suppose I shouldn't mention this, since I was busy with other things and
didn't turn on the NRD-525 to see if there was anything to it, but I did have a
het last night on KOKC-1520 on the SRF-59. I thought I might check to see if
anyone else was hearing unusually strong TA reception, but "other things" took
precedence. Would have been impossible to identify, if it was anything away.
The only TA I've heard in Krum in 7 1/2 years was the Norwegian on 1304 last
year when it was consistent for several nights back when it was booming in
everywhere else! But nothing to claim.

I did hear XEUACH-1610 again at good strength on the SRF-M37V early in the
evening and moved to the SRF-59 and found it at equal strength. Someone,
probably in Stillwater, is going to top my distance record for 250 watts soon!

Subject: [IRCA] Weekly Update of Ultralight Radio DXing Firsts and Records.

We've had quite a bit of activity in the past week and have blown
away several records including, the Top of the Heap, the World
Ultralight DXing Distance Record. That was held for over a month by
our illustrious Ultrafounder, Gary DeBock 5201 miles from
Puyallup, WA to HLCA-972, Dangjin, South Korea(Seoul)
11/22/2007(SRF-59). Well, Gary has had to step aside. The new record
is 5424 miles now held by Allen Willie, St. John's, NF. He
heard BSKSA-1521, Duba, Saudi Arabia on 1/4/2008 with a SRF-37V, barefoot!

Rob Ross actually paused in his Ultralight DXing long enough to
submit for a few very nice new distance records, though I'm convinced
that he is qualified for several more darn guy just won't quit
DXing long enough to submit for records.

Gil Stacy down in Savannah has continued his march through the
Caribbean, recording several First ultralight receptions from some of
the island nations, and establishing two new distance records at
  10,000 watts.

There are several other changes in the standings this week read
through the entire list a your leisure. An almost up-to-date list is
in the new issue od DXM, the IRCA bulletin . You can also find it,
even more up to date (today's entries) at the Ultralight Radio files
  area on dxer.ca. at

http://www.dxer.ca/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,87/Itemid,77/
I might add that there are a treasure-trove of other articles of
interest to Ultralighters at that site.

Right now, there are very few records in the List for receptions with
Super-Modified Ultralight Radios. We are actually keeping records
for two classes of radios Barefoot UltraLights and SuperModified
Ultralight Radios. The Super-Modified class of radio is a recognized
Ultralight receiver that has been modified or supplemented in any
way such as inductively coupling it to a large antenna, a tuned
loop, etc., or modifying it in any way, mechanically or
electrically. So, if you are DXing with some modification, take the
time to look over the current records, your log book may be full of
record-setting catches that we don't know about!

Submissions for Firsts and Records should be in an e-mail that is
titled to give me a hint of the Submission and can be posted here or
sent to me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. They may
be made at
any time. For the next several months, at least, I intend to update
the list each Monday and post it to DXer.ca. About monthly, we will
likely submit it to Phil for the bulletin.

I'll inform this group when a new Records List goes up on DXer.ca

  Send in those record loggings!!!
