2017-04-12 Thread William Stephan
Someone I allowed to use my PC managed to get Outlook locked up in what I think
is Agenda View. I cannot read messages, have no access to menus using either
the alt key or applications key. I've tried routing cursors to where the
machine reads "view" all to no effect. Anyone have suggestions as to how I can
change views? I've also rebooted and shut down the machine which has not
helped. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Electronically signing pdf documents

2016-12-23 Thread William Stephan
I'm working through a similar problem at work, though I have to use a
secured certificate, not a graphic like Jean's using. There are tools in
some versions of Adobe that will allow you to add a signature, but the
tricky part is, at least in my situation, that I have to use a mouse to draw
a rectangle in which the signature is supposed to go. I was able to do this
one time, but I'd say it's more luck than actual technique at this point.
It's possible to mark up a .pdf file so that JAWS recognizes a signature
block, I had a long battle a couple years ago with OPM and they finally
provided me with forms I could readily sign. How far anyone would get with
an outfit like IRS is unclear to me.

Jean, I do the same with Word documents. There, you can locate the space for
a signature or, if need be, create one. By contrast, the PDF W9 (a U.S. tax
document) has no space where you'd put your signature, and the PDF format
seems to prevent us from creating any.

I don't know what a W9 file is, but I have successfully aded an electronic
signature to documents. I originally signed my name on a piece of paper,
then scanned it and saved it as an image file. Now, when I need to put my
signature into a file, I simply insert the image. I don't know if this would
work in an edit field, but it does work in Word documents.

Jerry,

I posted almost the exact same question two weeks ago, and no one responded
with a solution. In the end, I had to have my girlfriend show me where to
sign and then have her create a new PDF file with my signed W9. Someone else
was trying to see if the W9 could be converted from PDF to a word file, but
that didn't come about, either.

Maybe someone who has an answer will see your message. I hope so. It would
be good to get a solution. But honestly, I don't see how it could be done.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Excel files

2008-03-09 Thread William Stephan

David:
I haven't followed this thread as closely as I might have, so disregard this
if it's already been mentioned.

Another way to quickly read through a spreadsheet in Excel is to use Jaws
keys:
Control-shif-d, control-shift-c and control-ship-r
These will open data cells, cells in column, and cells in row respectively.
When you're through, just hit the escape and you'll be back to the real
spreadsheet.

Dear List

I do not know why this has not occurred to me before but I recently started
converting Excel Spreadsheets I have been sent into single file web page
format. That is, an mht file.

This converts the spreadsheet into a table on a web page which you can use
all the Jaws normal table navigation keys to read once opened in your
internet browser. You can also use the say all command to read the entire
spreadsheet. Heading can also be announced as in Excel.

I have personally found this much easier than simply reading cell by cell
within an Excel Spreadsheet, certainly until I am familiar with the
spreadsheet layout . In Excel I may have to navigate loads of blank cells
and it is harder to get a quote picture unquote of the whole spreadsheet.
I have found the mht version much much easier to read. Even if I have to
work on or edit the spreadsheet in Excel I have found it useful to keep a
web page version open for easier reference.

Probably this is obvious to a lot of you and if this is so I apologise but
I thought I would pass this on as a suggestion.

Regards

David Griffith

Having a look around it appears that the control plus 1 type shortcut keys
are linked to the Go menu commands. Can you confirm that you still have the
go menu commands on your menu bar? It should be between View and Tools.

If this is not there, this may be your problem. It is possible to customise
the menu bar in Outlook and someone might have removed these commands and
therefore you have inadvertently lost your access to the shortcut keys
associated .

I am not 100% sure about this but it is worth eliminating this as a problem
in the first place. So perhaps you could have a check?

The Outlook hotkeys do not normally have to be enabled and should be there
by default. I will have a root around to see if there is place where you
have turned them off.

A temporary work around would be use Control Y combinations.

Control 1 going to Inbox can be replaced by Control Y , then I, then enter.
Control 2 going to calendar becomes Control Y, then C, then enter etc.

These keys work in Outlook 2003 and I think 2007.
What version of Outlook are you using where these keys will not work?
Remember these keys will not work if you are in an element of the program
like a mail message or an appointment dialogue box.

[JAWS-Users] Braille display and Jaws 8

2007-09-30 Thread William Stephan
I have three computers running Jaws 8, one desktop, and two laptops. I
decided to use my Pacmate display on one of the laptops. I went in under

machine though, there's only one pick, and it's for "no display".

Now, I have never synced my pacmate with this particular laptop. Do I need
to do that to get the drivers to appear, or is there some other way to get
them.

[JAWS-Users] Which side are you on

2007-09-22 Thread William Stephan
I occasionally get posts with instructions to find boxes etc. on
either the left or right side of a screen on a website. Is there a uniform
way that Jaws displays screens, and is it possible to navigate around a
screen using Jaws the way you might with a mouse?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Joe:
My experience with Jaws 7 was that using it with a PDF form was problematic
to say the least. I'd suggest updating both your Jaws to version 8, and
Acrobat to whatever their current version is, 7 I believe. This is what I
am running and I routinely fill out forms.

My wife use those voices for teaching herself basic Norwegian. We bought the
Scandinavian disk from FS and she had "Nora" read Norwegian text. She found it
quite helpful BTW.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS-Excel documents looking like crap.

2007-06-29 Thread William Stephan
I thought you were trying to write new macros.

If you go to the macros menu, you should get a list of macros associated with
that particular spreadsheet. If you enter on a given macro, it will run.
That's about the extent of my knowledge.

.Hi Bill, I'm a bit confused here. I was told as part of my Psychology and

Sure, go to your tools menu using alt ;t. Type ;m for macros.
Arrow down once to "record new macro and press enter.

Here there are fields, macro "name, short-cut key, "store macro in"
discriptionand OK.

Be sure your shortcut key is control-plus-a letter, and enter on OK.
Do what ever it is you need to do on your spreadsheet, Then re-open your macros
using the same procedure you did the first time. Arrow down to "stop
recording", hit enter and you should be good to go.

I suppose someone could send you a spreadsheet with malicious or funky macros,
but I can't see any danger in using your own or ones from trusted sources.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS-Excel documents looking like crap.

2007-06-26 Thread William Stephan
Larry, I have to prepare spreadsheets for "Greensuiters" who like everything
color-coded, I.e. Green for success, red for failed, yellow for expected to
succeeed. If that's what you're doing, it is possible to write macros to
change color on a given selected cell. I'm not a hundred percent sure of this
but I believe you can select all in your spreadsheet, then pick a font, or
color if you want, and in theory, it should all be sized propperly.
Hope this helps.

.
.Hi Folks,
.
.I am crafting a business plan and much of the financial
.analysis information needs to be placed in to an Excel
.format.
.Jaws works wonderfully filling out the various cells
.however, when I print it out much of the data is hidden,
.columns don't line up, text is so small as to make it
.virtually impossible to read and the text that is visible
.doesn't conform with my font and color settings.
.
.I have read through the Jaws help, John Wilson's Excel
.tutorial and one from Cathy Ann Mertha of "Access
.Technology Institute and I still can't seem to make the damn
.thing work.
.
.Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
.
.Regards

.So if I understand things correctly everybody is receiving their mail in a
