Re: [j-nsp] default Junos on EX4200s currently shipping

2012-03-06 Thread James Baker
I've received 6 24 ports all had 11.4r1 and 2x 48 ports which has 10.4r
something

That is in the Asia/Pacific area

It would be nice if they shipped with Junipers recommended version

I am resurrecting this old thread because we are still receiving new EX4200s
from the distribution channel with Junos 11.2R1.2 on them. This version is so
unstable on the 4200 it is pathetic. Juniper guys, please talk to whoever in
the company decides what software ships on new products, and make a change for
these switches.

I suppose "stable" is in the eye of the beholder :-).

Given regression testing seems to be going down the toilet
at Juniper (well, let's just say it's not as robust as it
used to be; either that or the software has outgrown it),
without the kind of experiences kit and code go through in
the mine field to call on, I can see why Juniper would ship
out newer code as stable code.

Mark.

This is the vanilla EX4200-48T. I can't imagine why it is shipping
with 11.2R1.2. I just got these last week. My last batch had
10.something and at least weren't crashing right out of the box.

Somewhere between 1996 and 2006, Juniper used to regularly sell equipment based
on being BETTER than Cisco, whose software was notoriously bad and whose
platforms were behind the curve.

After that time, juniper started to move to the same category as Cisco. That
is, big and dumb. Now you have Idiocracy-style software that crashes on boot,
shipped out of the factory by default.

What next?

Are these the old EX4200-48P, or the new PoE+ EX4200-48PX models? The
new models require 11.2 (but they should have loaded a later R).

to be clear here... you are talking about the EX series devices, you'd
have to start that part of the conversation about 200 steps back in the
process at: "how did this device get past QA?" :(

Surprising that they don't install the JTAC recommended releases by default,
which they publish here:

http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB21476

I had a few RMA'd the other week, and they came with some variant of 10.4
installed.

[j-nsp] default Junos on EX4200s currently shipping

2011-12-14 Thread Jeff Wheeler
Dear List, and Juniper lurkers!

The EX4200s we have been purchasing lately are coming with Junos
11.2R1.2 installed from the factory. That version is totally
unusable. Various processes crash at the most trivial operations,
commits, and the CLI even crashes when editing the config (before
making any commit) in some cases. Yes, we change the software before
we deploy the switches, but I would hate to be an unsophisticated
customer who just expects the switch to mostly work right out of the
box. It's a PITA even for me to get software onto the things when
they are drop-shipped to POPs with connectivity and serial consoles
waiting.

Perhaps putting a Junos on the switches that is remotely stable when
shipping them out from the factory would be a good idea. I'm sure
this is obvious, but maybe the Juniper folks on the list could
communicate this obvious idea to the people who decide what version
ships on new units.

Merry Christmas!
