In the end, what I have heard is that you can configure attached EX
switches directly from your MX box, possibly with some simplification
in the process. I'm still skeptical as this sounds like a SPOF waiting
to happen. But then we're probably not the target audience for that
feature.

Junos Node Unifier
Junos Node Unifier is a platform clustering program for MX Series 3D
Universal Edge Routers that centralizes management and automates device
configuration to enable the connection of thousands of router and switch
ports attached to MX.
Junos Node Unifier enables the scaling of applications in the data center
and large-scale mobile backhaul operations by supporting multiple
connection types at optimal rates. It supports increased interface density
for configurations such as port-fan-out, port-multiplexing, and L2
switching, for server port aggregation and L3/MPLS routing access on
satellites, while retaining intelligent end device functionality to deliver
rich services

I had only ever heard that the rear MIC slot was for a future "services
MIC", given a full size services MPC has now been shown (it's in the
photos in the MX2020 datasheet) if a MIC version is going to come it'll
probably be then.

As for "high speed link to an EX" something along those lines has now
been announced as "Node Unifier" for FEX-like support.

I'd be unsurprised if VC on MX80 turns out like LNS support, where "it's
coming" becomes "we'll never do it" and then "here's the OS image
supporting it"

We were told 2+ years ago that Juniper would be releasing a module for
the port in the back of the MX5 - MX80 that could be used to VC another
MX -or- be used as high speed link to an EX (4200 / 8500). This has
changed a few times in our discussions with Juniper over the subsequent
years from "coming soon" to "no idea what you are talking about" to
"coming soon" again. Latest responses from Juniper have been reasonably
solid "never going to happen". My guess (merely a guess) is that
marketing/product positioning folks within Juniper decided that this
functionality would compete against their more expensive products and
killed the development/release.

But, there is another product coming which is similar, but will be able to
do it from the start.

This is all conjecture and hearsay ;-)

I have heard it is still quite aways out yet. I too wish they had it as it is
the nonredundant platform so would be nice.

As far as I understood Juniper announced it for Q3 2011, but nothing has been
