Re: [LegacyUG] Source pictures

2008-07-09 Thread JLB
I do both. I put the Source Detail Text and Comments in the Source
Detail box, then I attach the picture to Source Detail Picture (under
Multimedia on the Source Detail screen or by clicking the picture icon
on the bottom right of the Assigned Sources window). If I'm using this
for several people, as in the case of a census record, I then click the
copy button, in the bottom left of the Assigned Sources window and click
the Paste button for the other people involved. I don't add detail to
the picture itself. I don't use the Source Writer either except for the
new Source Detail box which I have no choice about.

When you selected "Relationship" you got the Legacy generated relationship
description instead of the Event that you created. Go back to customize the

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationships

2008-07-09 Thread Tracy Skegg
Elsie,
Your Relationship event can be viewed on the Family View screen, right
click to the left of the screen where the labels are eg born, died,
buried - 'Customise Family View Information' box will display. Pick
one of the field names (when I view something different to the default
I usually choose from the bottom fields), click on the "..." button,
scroll down to 'Event', click on 'Select' button and choose the event
you want eg Relationship (double click or use 'Select' button), then
close the box.

When you set relationships with a start person, as you move around
your file, Family view will display the relationship of the individual
to the start person above the Husband and Wife boxes. Go to Tools >
Set Relationships and choose the start person - the individual to whom
the relationships will point to eg yourself and limit the
relationships you wish to see. You can change the start person at any
time to anyone, just remember reset relationships. One of the
previous Legacy versions or builds showed relationships to both me and
my husband if I was the start person (eg husband's cousin), that
doesn't happen anymore, something I've missed in all the many changes
in Legacy.

I also like to see relationships via the Index, by setting a column to
display relationship. In Index view, go to 'Options' button >
'Customise Columns' > choose a column, click on the "..." button,
scroll down to 'Relationship', click on 'Select' button and close the
screen. The Relationship column and Family view (not your event) will
only show a single relationship, so if you are related to people more
than once, you can check the Relationship calculator in Tools menu to
see other relationships.

I've used most of these things in v6 and it all works in v7 too.
Thanks for the idea of having a Relationship event, because my family
don't follow the American or just the English way for family
relationships, add a kinship system with Australian Aboriginal people
and the Relationship event makes life a whole lot simpler to show my
daughter later down the track why someone was a cousin/sister,
cousin/brother, in the same skin group or just called me family
because they grew up with one of my grandparents on a mission etc.

Cheers
Tracy

When you open the RTF file (I assume you are using Word as the editer), the
"View" setting has a major impact on what you see on screen regarding the
formatting. If it is currently in Normal view, try Print Layout.

I've just created an RTF of a Descendant Book Report and had no problems

RE: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error 3167

2008-07-09 Thread music-line
I have had this Gene. With me it occurs when I have been trying out adding
a scorce via the new source templates, and then decide to cancel it. I
can't quite remember the process, but after I have cancelled, somewhere
along the line I also get this error. I assumed it was the deletion of the
record I cancelled. You're right, after rebooting Legacy all seems fine.
Sounds like a little display glitch that needs sorting out by the
programmers.

Best wishes

If you follow the Online technical support link at the bottom of every
Legacy UG message you would
find a link to . Error 3167: I quote below.

Please perform File Maintenance. File Maintenance will repair index
errors, correct common record
problems, remove references to unused information, and compact the family
file. Here are the steps:

 1. Click File from the menu bar and select File Maintenance from the
file menu.
 2. Choose the Check/Repair option from the submenu and proceed.
 3. If errors are found, re-run Check/Repair one more time to make sure
that all problems are fixed.

If that does not solve the problem, export all your records into a new
Legacy family file (File >
Export To > Legacy file) and use the new file.

If you learn to search for the answers your self you will get the answers to
your questions much
faster than waiting on Email.

No, I have it in Print Layout. What happens between the .pdf and the .rtf is

report. I have 15 chapters in my Descendant Report so my sources go from
300

to 17,900. I can change from roman numerals for the source numbers in Word
but where I should have some 300 sources I still have 17,900.

I also posted this to the list but am sending a copy off-list.

When you open the RTF file (I assume you are using Word as the editer),
the "View" setting has a major impact on what you see on screen regarding
the formatting. If it is currently in Normal view, try Print Layout.

How infuriating! Ruth says she has problems with the report and you say it

[LegacyUG] Relationships

2008-07-09 Thread Elsie Saar
I have an event I call Relationship where I fill in how the person is
related to me, to my husband, and/or to my son in law. In the
description I put: "Great-grandmother to Elsie Scharpf" or "first
cousin, twice removed, to Robert Smith". In version 6, I set the
burial field on the family screen to Relationship to I could see how
and to whom the person in my database was related. I found this to be
very helpful. Now, in version 7, I tried to do the same thing and it
only comes up with how the person is related to me in the "2nd cousin
twice removed" format, the number is not spelled out and the
relationship to me is not shown, "second cousin, twice removed to
Elsie Scharpf". How can I tell Legacy to use my event "Relationship"
for this field instead of its relationship calculator?
Do I have to rename this event before I bring the database over to 7?
I have kept a version 6 database.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy's integration with The Next Generation of Genealogy Website

2008-07-09 Thread John B. Lisle

Tim,

This may sound a lot like advertising. But I treat it as making
Legacy Users aware of this tool. I know I do not make a dime making
this knowledge available. In fact, I end up spending a lot of time
helping people with it.

Yes, you do use a Gedcom file for importing the data. At some point
you need to identify what is going to be the master copy of your
database. and a lot of people feel that Legacy is likely the best
tool to be a master.

I have databases from a few hundred people to almost 100K people in
Legacy that I have successfully uploaded to TNG.

What TNG has done in Version 7 (after a lot of prodding by me and
others...) is to get TNG to import some of the proprietary Legacy
Gedcom tags so that the Lat/Long data is imported, among other Legacy
specific data.

If you or anyone wishes to learn more, we can chat off-list.

john.

How does data get into TNG? Do I need a GEDCOM file?
If you already have your genealogy in a desktop program (like PAF,
Legacy, FamilyTreeMaker, Reunion, etc.), then the quickest and easiest
way to get your data into TNG is to have your program output a GEDCOM
file (standard method of genealogical data exchange) and then import it
into TNG. The whole process takes only a few minutes (or less, depending
on how big your file is). Of course you don't really need a GEDCOM file.
If you want to enter your data by hand directly into TNG, you can do
that through the administrative interface.

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

2008-07-09 Thread Kim Austin
I use the MRIN system and I love it. I think numbers.

I use tabs that are two sided 00 - 99. I stick them on a clear sheet
protector. I cut a file folder at the seams so it sticks out just a little
bit wider than the sheet protector and I punch 3 holes in it. I than number
it with 100, 200 ... and up 1400, 1500. This way I can use the numbers in
any order that comes up. So I might have MRIN 1225 and than 1259.

You can get the double sided tabs from Smead. Color code labels, Double
Digit item # (67400).

I usually put the family group sheet in the first sheet protector with the
number tab on it.

Digital, I made a folder called MRIN and than sub-folders 100, 200 and up.

NOt sue if that helps.

If you follow the Online technical support link at the bottom of every Legacy UG message you would
find a link to • Error 3167: I quote below.

Please perform File Maintenance. File Maintenance will repair index errors, correct common record
problems, remove references to unused information, and compact the family file. Here are the steps:

1. Click File from the menu bar and select File Maintenance from the file
menu.
2. Choose the Check/Repair option from the submenu and proceed.
3. If errors are found, re-run Check/Repair one more time to make sure that
all problems are fixed.

If that does not solve the problem, export all your records into a new Legacy family file (File >
Export To > Legacy file) and use the new file.

If you learn to search for the answers your self you will get the answers to your questions much
faster than waiting on Email.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy's integration with The Next Generation of Genealogy Website

2008-07-09 Thread Allen Prunty
How do you get Legacy 7 to pass the lat and long to TNG so that it's
mapping will work?

You do have to go and manually link your media for best effect... TNG
v7's new web 2.0 interface makes that much easier.

Can I look at your site?

I also will gladly help anyone set up TNG and can arrange hosting if
anyone is interested.

John B. Lisle wrote:

Allen,

I have been using Legacy and TNG now for almost 4 years and quite
agree. These programs work very well together. In fact, a survey of
TNG users done a few months ago showed that more TNG users use Legacy
as their principal database (I think it was something like 30%) than
any other application, including people who only use TNG.

With the introduction of mapping with Legacy 7 and the ability to mass
resolve most of your locations with VE (and yes, I know, that they
then have to be checked. Yet, getting a large number done with little
work is worth it when the rest are no more work than if you did them
manually...) allows you to make use of TNG's Mapping facility
seamlessly. This is, I believe, a Legacy only feature.

Legacy users should definitely consider TNG if they wish to publish on
line.

I've just created an RTF of a Descendant Book Report and had no problems

Re: [LegacyUG] "L" column of Geo Location List

2008-07-09 Thread JLB
My L column has some V's in it, not X's so maybe they haven't updated
the lingo in the Help File. As it says the L column has to do with
latitudes and longitudes. Maybe why it's called L. I haven't bothered
with this new feature of v.7, just been lurking on the list as people
talk about their mapping issues. I had previously gone through all my
locations finding co-ordinates for them and I thought that was enough.
Alot of them carried through with V's. But some of them are apparently
not in agreement with Virtual Earth and would have to be redone. Since
v.7 came out I haven't been to my Master Location list except once to
see what all the fuss is about. Just can't imagine spending hours moving
pins around on maps. Maybe if I was 20 and had another 60 years to live.

Bugs in certain SourceWriter templates make the Descendant Book Report
unusable for me, so I thought to convert the report to an rtf file and
edit
manually. Then I found that in converting, Descendant Book Reports now
lose

much of the original formatting, sources appear in a huge blob after each
individual, and the report is just an unholy mess. Much the same thing
happens with the Narrative format.

Does anyone know of a way to get the Descendant Book Report into a file
that

retains most of the formatting and can be edited in Word?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy's integration with The Next Generation of Genealogy Website

2008-07-09 Thread Tim Rosenlof
Getting close to advertizing..and OT but you need to read the faqs' on
the webpage.
http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/faqs.php

IMHO, there is no way to do what you described,
exactly, but you could add all information into person
1's timeline, or create a person (named dummy) to hold
all data.
Hope that helps.

[LegacyUG] Merge V7.0.0.53

2008-07-09 Thread Art Seddon
OK. I tried it again and reproduced a similar error.
(I have restored the backup and will NOT try another import until the next
update as this is the third time with this type error.)

I followed these steps:
Run File Maintenance Check/Repair on both Seddon.fdb and Smith.fdb. No
errors reported.
Run Renumber RINs and MRINs on both files to fill all missing, compact
lists.
Re-run File Maintenance Check/Repair on both files. No errors reported.
Backed up (thankfully) Seddon.fdb.
Imported Smith.fdb into Seddon.fdb with imported RINs and MRINs both set
to start at 4.
Seddon.fdb contained 38404 RINs and 18469 MRINs before import.
Smith.fdb contained 98 RINs and 57 MRINs before import.
Ran Merge.
Run File Maintenance Check/Repair on Seddon.fdb.
Received following error log:

(Full error log containing 81 errors sent to Legacy Support)
Check/Repair of Legacy Family File: C:\Legacy\Data\Seddon.fdb

Please check this file very carefully.
It's a good idea to run another Check/Repair after you verify the items in

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

2008-07-09 Thread JLB

Bob,

I was not subscribed to the list when your question first came onboard.
So, I'll try to answer now, belatedly. Having physical filing capacity
for MRIN's that are not being used, and may never be, takes alot of
unnecessary space and would also be expensive. That's why I recommend
renumbering your MRIN's as you create your filing system. This way you
only have tabs numbered 1, 2, 3 etc and you don't have blank spaces
everywhere. I don't use binders myself, but I'm pretty sure there are
numbered tab dividers that are split many more ways than 5 or 8.

Whether you keep your MRIN-numbered documents and your Master Source
documents in the same folder or separate is a small matter. As long as
each one has a number they'll line up numerically. I keep everything in
one folder because there's no reason not to. I used to keep my mother's
and father's sides separate but that didn't make sense either. It just
gave me one extra place to Browse to when linking documents into Legacy.

Claire Spinelli wrote:

I don't have thousands of MRIN's so this may not work for you, but I thought
I would chime in anyway.

I recently renamed all my files using the MRIN system because digitally it
sorted all documents relating to a particular family together. This was an
enormous undertaking, but well worth the effort before I continued further
research. As much as I love Legacy, it does a poor job of printing documents
from within the program. This system makes it so much easier to find what I
want in my PC documents folder. That being said, I don't actually file the
hard copy by MRIN. I'm much too "visual" to file them in such an arbitrary
order! I use 4" binders - one for each branch. So that I'm not confined to
tab positions, I make my own dividers using card stock and printable
self-adhesive tabs. Name and MRIN is on the tab. Each binder is organized as
a descendant chart - though I only use 6 tab positions - anybody 4th great
and beyond goes in the same position because I just don't have that much
information from that point on. Anyway, the top position is for 4th greats
working down to my parents' generation in the bottom position. This way I
can easily see who is in what generation. If two people are on the same
level with no one above them, they're siblings. If there is an above tab
between them, they're cousins. I also color code the direct line.

Just my way of doing things.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

I am intrigued by using the MRIN as the filing mode and using 2-inch 3-ring
binders as my storage mode; however, I have many thousands of MRIN's and
would like some advice.

For example - for my physical files if I have MRIN 1234, 1410, 1500, etc.,
how would you handle the filing need of an MRIN 1450 using folders with a 5
or an 8 tab cut? Probably inserting the MRIN 1450 with a tabbed divider
would not be in sequence - and unsightly for we 'neatniks'. :-). Would one
use 1st place tabbed dividers exclusively?

Also, if using Master sources and also MRIN filing, are these kept in the
same digital file on the PC or separated with the MRIN's in one digital
folder and the Master source in its folder? I'm toying with the idea of
filing all of them in one computer folder without regards to Master Source
(numbered in the 9000+ series) or MRIN numbers.

Just looking for some good ideas before upending my current files.

Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy's integration with The Next Generation of Genealogy Website

2008-07-09 Thread John B. Lisle

Allen,

I have been using Legacy and TNG now for almost 4 years and quite
agree. These programs work very well together. In fact, a survey of
TNG users done a few months ago showed that more TNG users use Legacy
as their principal database (I think it was something like 30%) than
any other application, including people who only use TNG.

With the introduction of mapping with Legacy 7 and the ability to
mass resolve most of your locations with VE (and yes, I know, that
they then have to be checked. Yet, getting a large number done with
little work is worth it when the rest are no more work than if you
did them manually...) allows you to make use of TNG's Mapping
facility seamlessly. This is, I believe, a Legacy only feature.

Legacy users should definitely consider TNG if they wish to publish on line.

john.

If you are curious take a look at http://mcdfamily.org (my family's
genealogy site).

You will find that the RINs translate to individual numbers and the
MRINs translate to family numbers.

Every time I upload a legacy GEDCOM it will apply only the
changes... and the source templates translate dead on with this
website. I then add photos and documents which are attached
correctly every time I upload a new GEDCOM. TNG also protects my
LDS data showing it only to family members who are LDS and I can set
different privacy levels so that certain users can view private info
and the public can only view public info.

I am shocked that Millennia does not make a deal to sell this
package as an addon... Legacy is the only program other than PAF
that will seamlessly integrate with it... I can't believe that both
groups don't work together. I've tried them all with TNG and it's
easy to update the sites information with Legacy then Upload a
Gedcom and watch it fill in all the data.

[LegacyUG] Can't get to Legacy Charting from Legacy

2008-07-09 Thread Bruce Jones
When I click on the Charting Icon in Legacy 7 (V53, Windows XP SP2) I get
the message
"Legacy Charting was not found and can not be run. Please re-install Legacy
in order to have Legacy Charting installed again."
I have the Legacy Install Exe on my desktop and I run it but still get the
same message when I click on Charting.
I have the Beta version of Legacy Charting installed in a different
directory and still have an Icon for it which does start Charting.
What do I need to do to access Legacy Charting from the Legacy icon?

Carol,
I just tried this as you described and I did not have a problem with
the problem locking up. I did notice that the To-do icon has a small
"o" beside it. This means that you have To-Do items that are open.
If all the To-Do items for that individual are closed, then the "o"
goes away. It is easy to confuse the letter "o" with the number zero.

Everything I tried functioned exactly as you described, up to step 5.
When I click on the icon, everything functions as it should.

Since this happens every time you try it, you might want to call
Support. I just wanted you to have a "second opinion." Sorry I
couldn't help solve this for you.

I do not have such a button on my Master Location list. Is this a new

I guess, upon reflection, what is want is county timelines for certain

That would depend on the publication date of the book and the copyright laws

Adding the photos you took would be fine...reproducing the photos from the
book is most likely a violation of copyright and I wouldn't advise using
them except for your personal use (i.e. not passed along to family or put on
the web).

Dede,

On the Master Location list is a round globe button. The US County Verifier
is there, as well as the Geo Location List and the Distance and Bearing
Calculator.

We'll have to get the Help topic 5-216 changed!

RE: [LegacyUG] Filing - Again

2008-07-09 Thread Claire Spinelli

Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do Problem

2008-07-09 Thread Dede Holden
Carol,
I just tried this as you described and I did not have a problem with
the problem locking up.

[LegacyUG] Backup Problems in V7.0.0.53

2008-07-09 Thread Phil Stanger

Hi

I am using Legacy v7.0.0.53 de luxe

When I close Legacy, I am asked if I want to backup. I answer yes, set the
backup file locations and everything's fine. If I then open a different
file, when I close Legacy I have to set the backup file locations again or
it saves to the previously entered ones. I am sure in earlier versions the
back up file locations used to be linked to the family file so that you only
had to set the file locations once. Is this a bug?

I just meant states that had their counties put in a timeline that
indicates their lineage (if that is the proper word) formed from so and
 so county with year, etc.
I am looking particularly for VA NC TN and KY.

I guess, upon reflection, what is want is county timelines for certain
counties in these states. My old fuzzy thinking problem again.

I just went there. It states that if VE finds the

That is a very good feature, but what I am looking for is to be able to

do, then I will probably find that they are done somewhere and I have
reinvented the wheel.

Jane,

County creation dates for current and historical counties, as well as parent
counties and ending dates, can be found in the USA County Verifier in Legacy.

Thanks for using Legacy.

each of my counties. Thanks so much.

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do Problem

2008-07-09 Thread Bob Janice

Carol,

Just tried creating a new to-do item from the individuals screen. I was
able to create it, edit it, and finally delete it without any problems
what-so-ever. It works fine on my machine. I know this doesn't help
you solve your problem but at least you now know that the to-do creation
routine in Legacy is working fine. It would appear that the something
is not quite right with your Legacy install or possibly your data file
has something in it that is causing the problem (and not being picked up
by file maintenance).

Subject: [LegacyUG] To-Do Problem

Hi,

Have uncovered a problem that "locks-up" Legacy which was caused when I made
a error entering a "To-Do" item for an Individual's information screen.
Here's what I did:
1. Entered a "To-Do" item from the "Individual's Information" screen
2. Forgot to enter a anything in the "Task Needing to be Done" section, and
attempted to save the "To-Do".
3. The program "warned me" of the error, and I then added Text to the "Task
Needing to be Done" Section, and saved it.
4. Then I noticed that the "To-Do" icon was "colored", and indicated "0"
items.
5. When I clicked on the icon, then Upper menus and Icons at the top of the
Legacy window when blank, and the program stopped functioning. The only way
I could shut in down was to reboot the computer.
6. I ran the "Check/Repair" but it didn't help.

Carol

[LegacyUG] Legacy's integration with The Next Generation of Genealogy Website

2008-07-09 Thread Allen Prunty
Legacy's Gedcom files integrate seamlessly into The Next Generation
Genealogy Site builder.

If you are curious take a look at http://mcdfamily.org (my family's
genealogy site).

You will find that the RINs translate to individual numbers and the
MRINs translate to family numbers.

Every time I upload a legacy GEDCOM it will apply only the changes...
and the source templates translate dead on with this website. I then
add photos and documents which are attached correctly every time I
upload a new GEDCOM. TNG also protects my LDS data showing it only to
family members who are LDS and I can set different privacy levels so
that certain users can view private info and the public can only view
public info.

I am shocked that Millennia does not make a deal to sell this package as
an addon... Legacy is the only program other than PAF that will
seamlessly integrate with it... I can't believe that both groups don't
work together. I've tried them all with TNG and it's easy to update the
sites information with Legacy then Upload a Gedcom and watch it fill in
all the data.

Allen

Are you saying you get an error for person 70 & 90?  Or is that the maximum
quantity you've tried to import?

What error msg are you getting when you do the import?
Have you looked at various different options during the import?
If the import gives you any indication of what it doesn't like, try opening a
backup of the GEDCOM in a text editor and search for that string (or person or
whatever).  See if you see anything strange ANYPLACE in that person's record.

RE: [LegacyUG] "L" column of Geo Location List

2008-07-09 Thread Evert van Dijken
If the location coordinates are coded by Virtual Earth you'll see a V and if
these are coded by Legacy Geo Location Database you'll see an L in the "L"
column. This has changed after the Help file and the user manual were released,
the X in this column isn't used anymore as far as I know.

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Re: [LegacyUG] "L" column of Geo Location ListDate: Wed,

I've wondered the same thing.
My "L" column has V, L, ?, and blanks
I can also get a '-' in that field if I say "do not geo-code" using the
geo-code button.

I know I've seen discussion to some of these codes before (like the dash), but
haven't seen all of them discussed - and can't find anything in HELP other than
on the "X" in the L column once it is Geo-coded (and I don't have any "X's"!).

Oh - I also just noticed "If you have added a note to a location (by using the
Edit feature), an X shows in the N column in the list"
And the VERIFIED (under EDIT) puts a check mark in the VER column.
But nothing more on the "L" column in HELP that I can find.

Does anyone have anything other than:
V L - ? blank
in the "L" column on the master location list?

Does anyone actually have an
X
in the "L" column on the master location list?

Bob

What is the meaning of “L” and “V” in the L column of the Geo Location list?
I did check the help file but couldn’t find it.
