Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree View Enhancement

Wow!!! Given that our TV just died (leaving an empty space in my living room), now I know the size to look for in a
replacement monitor. All the neighborhood teenagers will be jealous--until they find out what it's for. No wii.
Hmmm . . . LOL ;) Oh, and given the fun of wearing trifocals, I'd have to look at different parts of the screen
through different parts of my lenses. Great. Maybe I can just increase the font? Just kidding! Oh . . . that
would mean an even bigger screen for the same number of generations. I think that 4 or 5 -- maybe 6 -- will do just fine.

John S. Adams wrote:

I would need a screen about 16 FEET high in order to read the names. 12

RE: [LegacyUG] uploading changed web pages-sources

2009-02-01 Thread Syble Glasscock
Ron, I downloaded WinMerge, and plan to try it. So basically, I'll still save
the webpages to the Legacy web folder, but just add a month or date.

I thought about what you said about adding sources at the bottom of the page,
rather than at the end as I've been doing.  When I did this the "Table of
Contents", "Surnames", and the "Name List" is not working(Page Load
Error...file not found), "Home" page is.   This is what I have checked that I
think is relevant:

Other: Gendex; Include source citations...On each individual's page

Formatting: Names...Surname, Given names;  Surname index...Grouped alpha.
  Name List:SurnameGiven names
Any suggestions,
Syble

Keith,

That is precisely why I *never* change the RINS. There is also another problem
with Pedigree Pages. If the sources are put at the end of the pages, and then if
only new pages are inserted the reference numbers will be incorrect. Which is
why I put sources on each page.

4 generations is enough for my laptop, my trifocals, and me. However, if I ever went back to a desktop (or had a
computer desk again) and had a larger monitor, the option to select the number of generations would be cool.

ronald ferguson wrote:

Given that screens in general use are now quite a bit bigger than previously, I
agree an increase would not be out of place. I think 6 is probably enough
though. At present the name bars comfortably hold name/surname/dates and, for
me, if that information will not fit then having to drag the information to
read it would be a bit of a pain.

Having said that, I would make it clear that I am quite happy with the page
only showing 4, as at present, so it would not be one of my priorities.

invisible in FTM but very apparent (and relatively easy to correct) in

You shouldn't be put off by the problems posted to the list. Many times
they're from users who just haven't yet found the key to getting the result
they want. The program has a huge array of sophisticated features and it
takes time to find/learn them all, but the basics are very simple and
straightforward.

Post your specific problems and you'll get good responses from users on the

previously, I agree an increase would not be out of place. I think 6 is
probably enough though. At present the name bars comfortably hold
name/surname/dates and, for me, if that information will not fit then having
to drag the information to read it would be a bit of a pain.

Having said that, I would make it clear that I am quite happy with the page
only showing 4, as at present, so it would not be one of my priorities.

I knew that there would be more problems the like of which I have never struck

Right now would like to feel I am not alone in this and so I wonder is the

Toni,

I moved from FTM and had no problems. Some clean up was required as I had
broken trees and other issues not easily seen in FTM. I love Legacy and
would never go back. What problems are you having. This group is very
helpful if you are specific about your questions.

Kathy,

I take it that you went through the merge process? Have you looked in the index
to see if the person is in your files but just not linked?

I have mine set not to reuse RINs so for me it would always be the lst item,
otherwise I guess it could be anywhere!

If I have understood you correctly then you need to transfer them to your PC
into the same folders as on your lap top. This assumes that your lap top

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative - repeat of child marriage status for mother's 2nd marriage

2009-02-01 Thread Jenny M Benson

Tracy Skegg wrote
I couldn't see this topic in the Archives. Has anyone else come across
this error? I created a descendant report for a woman that had two
husbands, all of her children are from the first marriage, and the last
child died young and has the text "never married and had no children".

In the next paragraph I was expecting "Bertha married" or "Bertha next
married" but got "Bertha Bertha never married and had no children.
[name of 2nd Husband, son of ...]". I have use quoted names for
narratives, but I've never gotten a repeat before. I chose my mother
who had been married twice and checked her descendant narrative report,
her two marriages were worded fine, so was her quoted name for
narratives, but I didn't have the same child marriage status to compare
- never married and had no children.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I created a family with an exactly similar setup (woman with 2 husbands,
quoted name and child who didn't marry by first husband) and got the
same result that you did.

You should report this as a bug.

Re: [LegacyUG] Addresses in Legacy 7

2009-02-01 Thread Dede Holden
Michael,
Look at Reports, Books/Other, Address Labels. I guess you could print
the labels on regular paper to use an address book, but if you're
doing a mailout, the labels are the perfect thing. Be sure you look
at all the tabs on the Address Label report. You have lots of
options.

To be thorough, you would also need to delete files from the server that
were present in January and not present in February.

2009-02-01 Thread Dede Holden
Gary,

That is very interesting. I was using gmail. In fact, I sent it to
myself, via gmail, so I could open it on his computer. I'll try
again, using an alternate email address and see what happens. I want
to get this figured out, because my brother wants to start "sharing"
our family file also and he lives in another town. Thanks for the
reply.

Mike, thanks also for your reply. Since the Help files are a little
vague about how you should send the file, I decided to use Export.
It's good to know that copy works just as well.

Syble,

To remove ambiguity, I should have made it clear that in the example, it would
be the folders on your PC which could be named January and February. Not the
ones on your server.

RE: [LegacyUG] uploading changed web pages

2009-02-01 Thread ronald ferguson

Syble,

You should rethink this. What you are really asking for is a way to isolate
changed files. This is easy to do but you need to retain a copy of the
database. To Clarify (for Pedigree Pages):

Create the web page and upload onto the server name the filefolder "January".
Next month create a new file folder Called "February" and compare the files in
February with those in January.
Copy The changed files into a temporary folder and upload those onto your
server.

You can use CSDiff
(http://www.componentsoftware.com/products/CSDiff/download.htm) or WinMerge
(http://winmerge.org/) to make the comparison.

[LegacyUG] uploading changed web pages

2009-02-01 Thread Syble Glasscock
I didn't mean to start a controversy, I did use FileZilla and upload the Legacy
files.  No offence to FileZilla, but this is a large file over 10MB, and it was
quite lenghty to upload.  I've reloaded the entire file in the past with WS_FTP
Home and it takes 2-3 hrs.  I was hoping there is some program that would
highlight or have an arrow or something indicating which needs to be uploaded,
rather than dragging and dropping the entire file list and have it go through

It would certainly be great if Legacy would have an FTP as an add on that we

Keith,

That is precisely why I *never* change the RINS. There is also another problem
with Pedigree Pages. If the sources are put at the end of the pages, and then
if only new pages are inserted the reference numbers will be incorrect. Which
is why I put sources on each page.

So for clarification, the above should be the source and only use FSL

I would consider FSL to be the repository, and the individual
databases should be sourced based on what they actually are. For
instance, Texas Death Certificates would be sourced under Death
Records > Death Certificates > All countries except... > Created at a
state/provincial level > online images.

Obviously the usual caveats about referencing any of their text-only
indexes apply, but since most of FSL's indexes are linked to scans of
the original images, there's a good degree of confidence in most of
their data.

I believe this does not really satisfy the intent of the original
question -- how to upload only files that have changed.

The best FileZilla can do (with Legacy-generated files) is to check
for differences in the file sizes between the new files and those on
the web server. However, obviously you can make changes to an
individual record in Legacy and the file size could remain the same,
and so would not be uploaded. Furthermore some web servers don't
report the filesizes the same as they were when uploaded.

Thats funny, have been using FileZilla for years, both with my Legacy generated pages and my hand
coded pages for other sites. It has worked perfectly for me.

I believe this does not really satisfy the intent of the original
question -- how to upload only files that have changed.

When Legacy web pages are generated *ALL* those files will have a new
date but that does not indicate that the contents of a file is any
different from the previously-generated one.

SyncBack can be used to *compare* the data within the new and
previous files and can be arranged to upload *only* those which have
really been changed (regardless of their date stamp).

The best FileZilla can do (with Legacy-generated files) is to check
for differences in the file sizes between the new files and those on
the web server. However, obviously you can make changes to an

Dede,

I notice you are using Gmail, and I assume your husband is also. I have had
a recent problem with a friend, where PDF files sent to his Gmail account
are not able to be opened, but the same file sent to his two alternate
accounts go through fine. When we look at the attachment sizes they are
different. We have tried 3-4 tests with different PDF files and all have the
same problem. He suspects something is happening at Gmail that corrupts
certain attachments.

My husband has heard me talk about his family history long enough and now
he

wants to get in on the action. Yay! We have separate computers so I
decided that the Intellishare option would work for us.

I have read the Help Center article and understand what I'm supposed to do
when he sends me the file AFTER he's made changes.

I exported my family file to a Legacy file and saved it under a different
name. I e-mailed the file to him. When we tried to open it through
Legacy
on his computer, it did not work. It had the .fdb extension. Luckily
we're

in the same house, so I could copy the file to a jump drive and move it to
his computer. But I'm wondering, what happens when the person you're
sharing with is in another state and e-mail is the only way to transmit
the

files back and forth?

Does anybody have any ideas or experience with this? The only problem
that
I can think of is the possibility that the file name I used for the
e-mailed
version (send to rick.fdb) was not a good name. When I exported to my
jump

drive, I used a one word file name. Could that explain the problem?

You first have to scroll down to the bottom of the list of templates (past
Wills), then the page/section numbers seem to be listed in sequence, with the
corresponding templates.

I didn't notice they were there until you posted, but in a quick check it looks
like Legacy is organized so that if you find a template you like in EE, you can
go to the page/section number in Legacy and select the template.

In other words, it looks like we have two choices for finding templates: by
name, and by page/section number in EE.

Nice feature; and thanks for letting us know it existed. It will save me
considerable guessing as to which template I want from now on.

I suspect you just had a glitch in the transmission or the process you used.
The name that you each use doesn't matter. I've been using Intellishare with my
sister for several years via email, CD's, and jump drives with zero problems.

I am assuming that the jump drive worked (you imply that but didn't explicitly
say so).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I exported my family file to a Legacy file
and saved it under a different name." You could have used "File | Save Family
File as" or used Windows Explorer to copy and save to another name.

I ran a descendant narrative report on a woman in my file with 4 marriages.
I didn't have that double name problem at all. The 2nd (and subsequent
marriages) read like this...

Eliza married John Entrekin about 1872
Eliza married James C. Simmons about 1888...

I then added a fake nickname in quotes to Eliza and I got this output...

Janie married John Entrekin about 1872
Janie married James C. Simmons about 1888...

I am not having double names with either scenario!

quoted names, two marriages, last child from first marriage "never
married and had no children". Next paragraph reads "Minnie Minnie

Little bit odd that Eric had George by himself, the wording didn't say

he's a sole parent by the end of the paragraph and she's never been

[LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative - repeat of child marriage status for mother's 2nd marriage

2009-02-01 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I couldn't see this topic in the Archives. Has anyone else come
across this error? I created a descendant report for a woman that had
two husbands, all of her children are from the first marriage, and the
last child died young and has the text "never married and had no
children".

In the next paragraph I was expecting "Bertha married" or "Bertha next
married" but got "Bertha Bertha never married and had no children.
[name of 2nd Husband, son of ...]". I have use quoted names for
narratives, but I've never gotten a repeat before. I chose my mother
who had been married twice and checked her descendant narrative
report, her two marriages were worded fine, so was her quoted name for
narratives, but I didn't have the same child marriage status to
compare - never married and had no children.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Syble,

I don't use Filezilla so cannot comment on that program, but all the ones I
have tried enable the lists to be sorted in modified date order by clicking
"Date" in the coluimn header.

Thus, one can select all those changed after a certain date.
