Re: [LegacyUG] Witness event sentence structure

2009-07-09 Thread Patti Wyble

I did not have a witness event, and wrote the following. Feel free to use or
modify.

All fields: [HeShe] was a witness to [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
Desc and Date: [HeShe] was a witness to [Desc] [onDate].[Sources] [Notes]
Desc and Place: [HeShe] was a witness to [Desc] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
Date and Place: [HeShe] was a witness for an event [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources]
[Notes]
Desc only: [HeShe] was a witness to [Desc].[Sources] [Notes]
Date only: [HeShe] was a witness for an event [onDate].[Sources] [Notes]
Place only: [HeShe] was a witness for an event [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
All empty: [HeShe] was a witness for an event.[Sources] [Notes]

This assumes that you will type a desc that is a string with an article such as
"the marriage of Person1 and Person2" or "the baptism of Person1" or "a UFO" as
the case may be.

Cheers,

-Patti Wyble

[LegacyUG] Witness event sentence structure

2009-07-09 Thread Paula Ryburn

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if the event "Witness" came to me with the
L7 upgrade or if I added myself, but I do know I read about it on this list &
then started using it.

Now I see that the sentence structure I have is skimpy and geared only toward
use as a marriage event. All fields are displayed but "[Desc/Notes] witnessed
this marriage." no matter what fields are entered, and without sources.

Tonight I was wanting to add a "Witness" event to an individual... my
grandmother's sister was one of the witnesses for my grandmother's marriage.
Maybe it's too late at night to start working on a sentence structure, but I
can't figure out how to make this event work in either case:
Marriage: "So and so witnessed this marriage."
Individual: "So and so witnessed the marriage of the other ones on date
in place."

If you have tried this or have any suggestions, please do share.

Many thanks in advance,
--Paula in Texas

[LegacyUG] PDF Pedigree Reports

2009-07-09 Thread Anne Picketts
Has anyone had instances of pages being duplicated while making *.pdf
reports?
I have printed a 37 page PR and noticed that page 10 and 11 are
*exactly*the same, although the pages are numbered correctly (i.e. in
order).

On page 10, the last entry states 'cont 27'; on page 11, the last entry
states 'cont 28'. I checked pages 27 and 28 and these are exactly the same
too.

Can anyone comment on this please?

Re: [LegacyUG] Repository of Photos and other items

2009-07-09 Thread Paula Ryburn

This is not too confusing at all, especially since we recently had a thread
resulting in a bug report about the Text box of a Source not printing every
time (even when checked to do so). ;)

I think the repository is supposed to be the ultimate repository... where
someone would go to see the document.

Your approach to put "I have a copy" or some such in the Comments box & print
it on those reports where you want someone to know they can get a copy from you
is the right approach, imho. The bug in printing just makes it look like it's
not the right approach.

Hope THAT made sense.

tblCR.IDCS (Child Status field in Child Record table) is a foreign key
pointing to a row in tblCS (Child Status table). In your case, changing
tblCR.IDCS to point to a different tblCS row would solve your problem.

Something like...

UPDATE tblCR SET tblCR.IDCS=newvalue WHERE tblCR.IDCS=oldvalue

[[The above SQL hasn't been tested.]]

The "newvalue" you probably want to use is 1 (blank Child Status).

***

I'm not saying that it is a no-no to change keys ... just be sure you
know what you are doing (ask if necessary) and have a good Legacy
backup.

Dennis,
I am pleasantly surprised to read this thread. When I originally imported from
FTM using a GEDCOM, there was a bug that set all my child-parent relationships
to "Natural" (or something like that). That's over 1500 individuals. Over the
years, I've been cleaning these up "by hand" as I worked on a given lineage.
Now I see I could do it using Access... *IF* that field is not a key... do you

Ah! Thank you for pointing that out. I'd somehow missed it when I was
looking for something like that!

Of course, if Joyce has married surnames entered as AKAs *and* what I
might call "regular" AKAs, using that option will mean that the regular
ones don't print either, which is probably not what Joyce wants.

There is no need to change .fdb to .mdb. I never do. I just backup in
Legacy, open Access, then because Legacy is on the list of recently
opened files I just click on it. If it was not on the list I'd select

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources Not Printing On To-Do List/Research Log

2009-07-09 Thread Connie Sheets

Thank you, Brian.

For anyone else who might be interested in using Legacy the To Do feature as a
proper Research Log, here is the workaround I've come up with. I actually like
it so much (since it puts the source on the same page as the tasks and
results), I may continue to use it even when the bug is fixed.

I enter the source, then copy and paste it into the Task Description field.
Example:

Finish transcription of all Big Creek records pertaining to Jesse Hancock

Source: Regular Baptist Church at Big Creek Baptist (Henry Co., Iowa), "Church
records, 1836-1863," FHL microfilm 986,171, item 8.

Results: 6/29/09: Partial transcription completed; found death date for Jesse
Hancock.

Well, I would like to do that, as I've just discovered it will simplify greatly
my process for keeping a Research Log and noting negative results.

However, I'm experiencing the same problem Jennifer did: I've attached the

Always make a backup before opening your Legacy databases in Access.

In the first place, it's a misconception that you must rename your .fdb
file to .mdb in order to open it in MS Access. In the File|Open dialog
in Access, change the File Name to *.fdb to see your Legacy databases
and open them directly.

>I think I tried it once and all I got were errors, so thankfully, I was able

Secondly, you should be able to rename your .fdb to .mdb, edit it, then
rename it back to .fdb without a problem. Though I would recommend
making a backup and then directly editing the .fdb. If you get errors
doing this you probably edited something you shouldn't have.

[LegacyUG] Legacy and MS Access

2009-07-09 Thread SgtBob
I keep three .fdb files (bob1.fdb, bob2.fdb and bob3.fdb) plus off site files
as well as a GEDCOM just to be sure I don't lose my current and original data.

Currently, I use Access only for informational purposes in a couple of tables
in Access - mostly to check out Source numbers and/or Detail Number I assigned
and then save tdata as an Excel file where I am able to print some reports, etc.

However, if I change anything in a column while in MS Access and want it to
appear in my basic Legacy file, how do I do that?

For example, if I change a 'bob1.fdb' file to 'bob1.mdb' file, open it and
change an item, how do I get this 'bob1.mdb' back to a useable 'bob1.fdb'? I
think I tried it once and all I got were errors, so thankfully, I was able to
resurrect my 'bob2.fdb' file and continue.

Information appreciated on how to use this feature to where one could mass
correct erroneous data brought to Legacy from GEDCOM or other sources.

Paula,

You did not ask a stupid question. In fact, you explained quite nicely why I
ignore the surety level completely.  What I might rate a 3, you might rate a 4;
and what I rate a 3 today, I might rate a 2 next week.

What is far more relevant is the "proof argument" which can only be a
narrative: your example is the beginning of a proof argument.

That is how I use it. If it were the latter, it would be associated with
the Source record and not the Source Detail record.

A good example would be a death certificate. I would give the citation
to the date and place of death in a death certificate a surety of "4".
But (in most cases) I would give the citation to the date and place of
birth in a death certificate a lower surety.

Why not use the helpfiles? There is so much information in it about all
features. Some info about tagging you can find in for instance the chapter
Tagging Records. Look also for Advance tagging.

Also, you can use the help-button on every screen to get information about

If you click on the Record Selection button at the bottom of the main

suit your needs.

One of the options is to print all individuals with a particular tag:

Strictly speaking, your Sources should reflect where *you* obtained the
evidence for the data you have recorded, so it follows that if you own a
copy of the book you consulted, then you are the repository. If you have
provided full details of the publication it should not be difficult for
another researcher to find another copy of your source if your own is
unavailable to them.

If I go to my local library and look something up in a book, I would (if
I bothered to record repositories!) name my local library as the
repository. I wouldn't see any need to record all the other places
where that book was available, even if that was possible.

Cathy,

To answer the first part of your question, I do have a repository
"Personal Possession of the Author."  I use this for any original
document, book, etc., that I actually own and possess.

To answer the second part, I just did a quick test on one of my
citations of a book that is in the local library.  I have a copy of
the page that I am citing.  I entered a Comment in the Source Detail,
"copy of this page in the author's possession."  When I ran the
report, I chose End notes, but I unclicked the option to combine
multiple citations into one paragraph. The comment appeared in both
instances of the citation.   If I were you, this is what I would do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repository of Photos and other items

2009-07-09 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

I have two examples on my thinking. Over the years I have made photocopies 0f
the US Census in at least 2 NARA, over a dozen libraries/repositories,
(including Ancestry and LDS). I decided to use the NARA in Washington DC for
all.
Anything I created (photos, etc.), I am also the repository. All books I own
are the same.
