Re: [LegacyUG] Right click on individual in family view tab
Margaret I am having no trouble in right clicking the Individual in Family View to have the Options drop down edit menu displayed. You may have to run file maintenance. Judy Margaret Turnerwrote I've been a legacy user since versions 1 or 2. I seem to have lost the functionality of right clicking on the family page. At the moment when I right click on husband or wife I'm taken to the individual screen rather that the options. I have beome so familiar with using right click that I'm frustrated by having to to use the edit menu or as Gene kindly suggested using the marriage events or notes icon. [LegacyUG] Master source question
I have a question about master sources. I am a new user, and am adding some new people to my file. I have a document (a letter) which I want to use as a master source for these new people. So I created a master source, and started inputting the pertinent text for each person as I went along. However, I find that this seems to be a snowballing effect...the text for the last person reappears for the new person and so on. How do I create a master source, such as a document, that is used for multiple people, and just refer to the part that pertains to a certain individual in that individual's source? Judy

[LegacyUG] Imported sources question
I imported a gedcom with about 3,000 names in it. When I click on an individual's sources (click the books) quite a few just say "source" as the source list name and also on the output tab on the bottom of the screen. When I look at the "text of source" or comments, I see what I want the source to say. I want to add the detail (text) to the main source line, as it were, but when I do that, it says I will be changing ALL references to that master source. What exactly does that mean? I was using Generations where all sources were numbered, and I am a little confused. Thank anybody for help, Judy
Re: [LegacyUG] Multiple Prefixes
Robert~ It is common, in the RC religion, to address a priest as Reverend Father So-and-So. Not too cumbersome, if it is a little familiar. I don't know much about the proper PhD or DD addresses. Judy I do not want to start a long thread, but how are you handling multiple prefixes? I have a few people in my family who were both doctors (not medical drs, but doctors of the faith), and also they were known as Reverends. Entering "Reverend Doctor" into the prefix seems strange. Is there a better way? (I am thinking about "Rev. Dr." Shorter, anyway, but it is proper?) Thanks. Re: [LegacyUG] Charts in the publishing centre
Jeremy wrote Is there an easy way to get the charts from the charting program to appear in the books created by the publishing centre? Obviously I'd need to keep them to the same page size, but they are so much nicer than the standard reports ones. I realise I could just physically put them in, but it would be nice to still have page numbers. I suppose I could create them as jpegs and use the picture scrap book thing, but then I'd have to create a dummy person, and it's a bit clunky, surely there's a better way (or is there anything planned to improve this?)< Jeremy I use the publishing centre and where I want to insert the charts, I insert a place holder in the Chapter List. Re: [LegacyUG] Charting question
Jeff Sent Is there a way to eliminate the boxes' default "3rd column" (or merge it with the 2nd column) since it is unused in this tree? Because of the empty 3rd column in each box the longer names in the 2nd column get split into 2 lines when they could easily fit if the blank 3rd column space was available to them. I would rather not reduce font size when box real-estate is available but unused. Jeff If you select your box items and under "Settings" click alignment "Centre", you will find that your names will spread across the whole box. If one of your selected items is say aligned left, then you will have the 2nd and 3rd columns combined, compressing your first item to 2 columns. If you have selected another item aligned right you will finish up with 3 columns and much compressed information. I usually select all items "Centre" aligned. Re: [LegacyUG] Charting question
Jeff If you do the sizing first then you may not need to do as much dragging. Carefully selecting where you drag can avoid the "weird" connecting lines. However, if the chart is too large, requiring a great deal of compression, to fit on a single page, this may be impossible. You need to experiment a bit. It is great fun! Judy Jeff wrote Thanks. But when you drag the boxes the connecting lines go into weird angles and as far as I can see there seems no way to change them - or is there and I have not found out how? Jeff Not only can you drag the boxes but you can use the sizing function under the Appearance tab. You can then change the size of the boxes, the distance between generations and the closeness of the boxes. This function with the dragging options allows you great flexibility in fitting your chart to the size and shape required. Re: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages - Tracking Individuals
I, too, track individuals through census pages, and would appreciate knowing how others keep track of "other people", who at one time may not be recognized as related, but after further work, end up being so. For instance - a person may be a boarder at a particular residence, in any given census year, and I note, in the source, with whom he/she is living, but see no way to keep track of these "extra" people. I just recently discovered a marriage certificate for a person, went searching for the family in census records and found that I had reference to them in a census source, recorded years earlier. The "boarder" living with the family was actually a niece - daughter of the wife's sister, for whom I had adequate information in a distant state. Putting the "residing with" in an event field would seem to clutter up a report. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. If you are displaying descendants from the husband and desired spouse, then do a descendant chart of the spouse. You also need to make the children of the invisible spouses invisible or the children will just record with their visible parent (one parent only shown). Further generations will not be displayed in chart. You could just tag in Legacy those you want displayed and create a new database but I think the above is the bestter option. Re: [LegacyUG] Dictionaries
Hi Mike~ No apology needed. Your suggestion worked beautifully - an old greeting card program - long since deleted - "took ownership" of about 30 file extensions, including .tlx and .clx files in the Legacy dictionary. I switched the associations to Notepad and all is well. Thanks for the input. Judy My apologies. I see that the tlx files are in fact plain text and therefore can be edited with Notepad. On a Vista system, with no application associated with the TLX extension, double-clicking one of them results in a query as to whether Vista should pick a program from the local system or use a Web service. The local computer is, of course, the way to get Notepad associated with all TLX files. I would postulate that sometime in the past you either went the Web service route, or had installed some greetings card software. To be able to open TLX files with notepad, you now need to use the Default Programs to a) remove whatever it is that 'owns' TLX files, and b) make Notepad the new owner. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. Cathy, Dennis, Michele and Elizabeth~ Thank you for your ideas and suggestions. Cathy, your idea of "Newspaper Article" for an event worked very well. It is not exactly what I had wanted to accomplish but your way results in a "tidier" report page layout. I am a confirmed "splitter" but lumping odd snippets of miscellaneous information under a newspaper heading, with a one or two sentence "lead in" to the source text, in the event notes, allows me to keep clean pages without a bulk of information for any one person. Many thanks. Judy - Original Message - From: "Cathy" To: Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 10:13 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Incorporating Narratives From Sources into a Report Judy, I have been researching in newspapers lately and found articles for some people in my database. To add the article into my Legacy database so that it will print nicely in the Descendant Book [a.k.a. Modified Register Report], I've set up an event entitled "Newspaper Article." The following is the way I set up the sentence structure: There was a newspaper article mentioning [FirstName] in the "[Desc]" published [Date] [~inPlace]. [Sources] [Notes] Then I can add the entire article into the [Notes] section of the event. However, I format the article in the Notes section so that it is italicized. The article then shows up nicely in the Modified Register report. While I include the newspaper name in the [Desc], I also include it in the source citation. The [~inPlace] is where I place the location of where the newspaper is published.. The Source citation has more detailed information including the page number and column number on the page. Cathy At 06:57 AM 1/28/2009, you wrote: I would appreciate knowing how other handle "sources" that contain marvelous narratives that would make wonderful reading in a report or a book, but are too long to put in the space allowed in the "Events" Notes. The source is a newspaper article which outlines the entire event and the happenings at the time, and it is transcribed in the sources. Another example holds true, for me, where I have transcribed lengthy obituaries as sources, being too long to put into the "Events" field. I would appreciate knowing how other handle "sources" that contain marvelous narratives that would make wonderful reading in a report or a book, but are too long to put in the space allowed in the "Events" Notes. For example, a relative purchased land in a given year, becoming owner of a portion of a railroad. I have the purchase of the land, the date and location in the "Events" area. The source is a newspaper article which outlines the entire event and the happenings at the time, and it is transcribed in the sources. Another example holds true, for me, where I have transcribed lengthy obituaries as sources, being too long to put into the "Events" field. How could I use narratives, from sources, in a report or book, without having them repeat in the source of the report? Perhaps a setting or "trick" I've missed? Ron Ferguson wrote When it occurs using XP it is normally resolved using the methods detailed in "Solutions by error number". Have you tried this and checking/updating your Jet- engine as recommended? Yes, I have tried that. Jet engine pack 4 was already installed so I tried to uninstall Legacy as suggested in "solutions by error number", but I was prevented from uninstalling. I went back into Legacy and I tried to see if I could back up again but error 91 came up - and worse, when repeating the procedure after quitting, error 91 came up again (originally I had been able to back up on the second try - now I can't). There seemed to be backups recorded each time that I attempt these faulty backups. They seem to have the correct number of individuals, families, surnames & master sources although the size of the backup files was less than it had been earlier. Mike and Ron~ This Yank thanks you, kindly, for the geographical and "pc" lessons!! Now, Mike, you know I'm 100% in agreement. [LegacyUG] Clipboard Source Automatically Changing
Prior to these latest minor updates, I had been able to create a Master source, without using the Source Writer, fill in the general details for the source and copy it to the clipboard, leaving the text/comments blank. I could then apply the source to multiple individuals, filling in the text/comments section as the specific details applied to each person. But currently, even if I save a source with "blank" text/comments to the clipboard, each time I add specifics for an individual, those specifics are added to the clipboard, which is very annoying and making sourcing a very irritating experience. The specifics will not apply to the next person for whom I wish to use the original clipboard source. What happened to the old source clipboard? It was hard enough when the tabbed clipboard was removed, but this "new feature" that has popped up all of a sudden is maddening!! Any solutions in sight? Re: [LegacyUG] appending?
Michelle You do not have to keep going back to the individual to add a new sources to the clipboard. You can save up to 10 sources on the clipboard as you could in Version 6 .When you want to add saved source(s) to another individual all you need to do is right click on the "Open source clipboard" blue triangle in the new assigned sources window and a dropdown list displays all saved sources. One click and the source is added. I found the 5 tabs in version 6 confusing and preferred this method more useful Judy That is what I am doing now but I didn't have to do it in version 6. Now I highlight a source and copy it. I open up the other person and copy it that person. Then I have to go back to the other person and highlight another source and then go to the 2nd person and copy it. To clarify... this is if I have TWO sources for one event! I want to copy BOTH sources at the same time so that I can paste both sources to another person at one time. michele Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
Re: [LegacyUG] appending?
Michele~ We can no longer "append" sources in Version 7. Version 6 had the fantastic capability of allowing us to have multiple sources available on a "tabbed" clipboard and "append" or overwrite on the tabs. Version 7 does not offer us that option. Still a great program. Judy My questions was not answered. Can we or can we not append sources? When I am working on a specific person and I go into his/her source list and I highlight a source I want to copy, I could swear that version 6 would ask you do you want to overwrite or append. Now when I do that I only get the option to overwrite (version 7). Hi Margaret As I don't worry about initial entry and modification dates within the file, Sherry's solution fixed my problem. Judy Markie Flint Blackmon wrote on August 24, 2008 11:11 AM Hi Judy, I exported to a new family file and that works great for the Master List issue, but exporting caused all initial entry and modification dates within the file to be set to today's date, and I really don't want to lose that trail. If I right-click a child in Family View that has a child status of "Twin" and then click the down-arrow on the Child Status drop-down box for that Twin, the Master Child Status List is displayed. The list is still empty, but this time the grid is displayed, albeit with no data. If I click on one of the blank entries, I get the following error message: "True DBGrid 6 Data access error ". What to do when Grids go bad? I remember in an earlier release of Clooz 2.0, data disappearing from the grid was a common problem; I believe restarting Clooz fixed it. Click on Options > Customize and select the Data Entry tab. Make sure there is a check in the box for 'Verify US Counties in Place Names'. Now when you are in individual's information screen and type a date & place like: 17 April 1805 - Attica, Wyoming, New York, and then move to another field, you will get a message that says, "Wyoming County did not exist in 1803 in the state of New York. It was not founded until 1841." If you click the Show County List button, the next screen will tell you that the parent county is Genesee. There is also a global USA County Verification tool that is reached by choosing USA County Verifier from the Tools menu. This feature lets you check all the location fields in all the records of your family file to verify the validity of county names for locations in the United States. An error is reported if: * No county by that name was ever found in that state. (This could be also be the result of a misspelling.) * The county was not in existence in this state at the date specified. * The county had been dissolved in this state before the date specified. There are options in this screen as well; click the Help button for more details. In addition, there is the AniMap program for historical boundary changes for US counties. [LegacyUG] V6 Geo Locations - Boundary Changes
Has anyone discovered a sure-fired way to select the "proper" city/county listings for US cities when the city remains the same, but the county changes. For example - Attica, New York. Prior to 1841, Attica was in Genesee County and after it was in Wyoming County. I've noted the boundary changes in the "Notes" section of each location, but short of memorizing county formation dates or opening the location each time I use it, there doesn't seem to be a way to easily identify the "correct" city/county combination. Can the notes be made to show up rather than just presenting with an "X"? Suggestions gratefully appreciated. My objective was to stop splitting a box or marriage over a page break and by using the options on the bar on the left it was reasonably easy to move the boxes around to avoid this and optimise the pages. I agree that to prevent boxes being split over page breaks is desirable. My problem is with cutting and pasting pages. As the margin is very narrow, the pasting area is very small. I cannot adjust this margin in Page Setup. If we could set up (adjustable) slightly wider margins this would be easier - or even better, an option to overlap the chart at page breaks as can be selected with FTM charts (at least the old version 10) Judy _ For Genealogy, Software and Social visit: http://www.fergys.co.uk New Blog: Open Legacy Family File with Open Office View the Grimshaw Family Tree at: http://www.fergys.co.uk/Grimshaw/ For The Fergusons of N.W. Re: [LegacyUG] Comment about the Source Clipboard
I think the confusion is the tabs. Ignore them! Taking the sources one at a time to Clipboard (from the assigned sources window). Make sure you click prompt for detail. Save them, give them a name. When you have those you require (up to 10) all you need to do is RIGHT CLICK the clipboard icon in assigned sources wimdow and select the single source you require. You dom't even have to click the LOAD button. I think someone mentioned this before but it hasn't been noted . Judy ronald ferguson wrote I may be misunderstanding you here, but I cannot see the difference between clicking a tab at the top of the clip board and bringing up a new census by clicking the Load button. Should you wish you could save each of the 5 census (or whatever) and just load the appropriate one as required. I think you are misunderstanding her because I agree with her exactly and would quote the same example! What we would wish to do is find a family on a Census, create that Source and add it to the Clipboard, then find the family on another Census, create that Source and add that second one to the Clipboard. Then be able to choose, for the various family members, whether to paste from the Clipboard the first Source, the second Source or both Sources. Here is a scenario I often have: I find someone on a Census and he has a wife and child with him who I haven't found before. I then look up his marriage on FreeBMD and the birth of the child. I might also look up the wife's birth and/or look for the wife on an earlier Census. As I am entering all this new information I want to quote the Census as a Source for an Event for all 3, I want to quote the FreeBMD marriage as a Source for the wife's name and for the Marriage as an event, I want to quote the FreeBMD birth as a Source for the wife's name and her date of birth and I also want to quote the Census as a Source for her name and date/place of birth. It would be so useful to have all those Sources on the Clipboard and pick and choose various combinations to cite as I move through the family. -- Jenny M Benson Jenny, But why can you not save all of these - you can save up to 10 sources - and load them in as and when required? This is the way I work when I am doing something such as you describe and it works pretty well. Maybe marginally longer than clicking only one tab. but I'm afraid I do do not see a major difficulty. This could continue until we decided that they should be un-moderated. All the spam that we have had so far has come from people who have subscribed and then posted their messages. As far as I know, spam (or anything else) cannot be listed unless the person has subscribed to the mailing list. - a Yahoo rule? That meant messages were checked, not subscribers. If they were spam then the subscriber was banned before the message is put up on the list. We may be aware of most people who subscribe but not always and I am not sure how you would check them. [LegacyUG] Re: [legacymelbourne] November meeting
Yes please Susan, you run it. You are far more familiar with the best setup. What I had changed recently when we collected a few Spam messages was that anyone new who subscribed, had to have their messages (when or if sent) checked ie moderated (approved) before the message could be put up on the list. But I bow to your superior experience. I guess you will have to go in and re-edit the procedure. Thanks again for doing this. From what you say that sounds different to the above Spam is usually sent to Mailing Lists from Non-subscribers, at least that is what happens on my other lists that I run, I can then get them deleted BEFORE they get to the subscribers. I will have a look into Yahoo in the next few weeks. I think the list should only be run by one of us, as it can get a bit difficult if we both have fingers in the pie - so to speak. This was because of the number of spam messages we were receiving. I went in and un-moderated 2 of the new members (missed the third). However we do not seem to be having trouble lately so perhaps we should eliminate this general moderation of new members unless we have more trouble. To unmoderate individuals, I just went to edit membership of individual and changed the setting. I can't remember how we set up the rule for moderation of new members in the past but if you have trouble finding it, let me know. Missed you today. The Group passed on their thanks to you for taking on the mailing list. Happy Christmas to you and Tom too. Judy (\__/) (='.'=) (")_(") Susan, Victoria, Australia. [LegacyUG] Error Message
Error getting next deleted MRIN. Error 3021: No current record. Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN? I get this message when I try to add a new person. I am unsure why or why to click. If I click quit it quits the program if I click no or yes it doesn't go away so I can't add a new person. Sometimes if I click yes and no several times it goes away and lets me add a new person. But it was doing this before when I was using a external hard drive and at some point it wouldn't let me access my data. I am starting other from scratch and loading the individuals in again using an external hard drive but the program is on this external drive. I am hoping this will solve the program but when the message starting appearing, I am worried the same thing may happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: [LegacyUG] County without city
Dee~ Most (but not all) US counties are broken down into Townships, and I have found this designation useful for earlier, more rural designations, when locations are often designated "between telegraph poles". Millcreek Township, Hamilton County, Ohio is a good example from early census records. Today it is simply Cincinnati.
