At what point in the installation does this error occur? If Anaconda

Visual Slick Edit does what you want, but it ain't free. Well, neither is
Visual Studio... ;-)

Personally I use XEmacs but a lot of EX-Windows programers (pun
intended) at my work place swear by it. It's got a Windows version too.

Bidi support for Linux

2001-04-15 Thread matial

IBM (my employer) has, as you may know, vested interest in Linux. Many of
its products are now designed to run (also) on Linux. For these products
to succeed on the Israeli market, Linux needs to have a reasonable support
for Hebrew (Bidi). IBM is ready to invest a significant amount of
developers time in order to improve the Bidi support in Linux. Everybody
will benefit.

The team to which I belong has extensive experience of Bidi support,
including in Unix (Motif), but quite limited acquaintance with Linux.

My question is for the seasoned Linux users in this newsgroup: where
should we invest our efforts to make the most good? I know, from
subscribing to this newsgroup for a while, that some Bidi support already
exists or is in development, but I have no organized list. We want to
avoid duplicating work already done or in progress. We want suggestions
about which components are most important. Our aim here is development
tools (KDE, Gnome, etc...) rather than end-user applications (like a word
processor or a picture editor). Now is your chance to ask for the Bidi
support that you always wanted and never had time to do yourself! You may
suggest as many items as you wish, but it will help if you can prioritize
as "Vital", "Important", "Nice to have", etc...

Of course, we don't have unlimited resources, and we don't commit to
anything, but I assure you than I am not wasting your time, and we do
intend to help improve the Bidi support in Linux.

If there is some other lists where I should ask this question, please give
me pointers.

Franskly speaking, I'm freaking stunned such a topic is discussed on the
list at such length, and with such an arguments. First, is this Linux-IL
or il.linux.personal.attitudes.suck.suck.suck? Shoud there be talking
about Linux or about attitudes of list members? This applies to me too
(self-LART will be deployed), obviously, but sometimes one just can't help

Second, if you time is so precious, why you do read and answer the list,
especially those silly newbie questions? If you have time to teach
clueless newbie his manners, your time is obviously not so scarce as you
try to make everybody believe. And if you have time to discuss such topics

Here I clearly refuse to respect anyone based solely on the time of the
subscribtion on the list, or time of the first knowledge about any
particular software or any particular matter at all. To earn respect, one
needs more valuable basis that having list-uptime of years.

A free version of SNIFF+ for free software development is available from

Are you sure they tested with KDevelop 1.4? I am told that prior
versions were really not that impressive, but that 1.4 is. So if they

i think you've done some filtering of message for us, which hides the
relevant error message. when you run X, you get a large list of messages.
they are not junk, and the last one is not the important one. you should
try logging all these messages, and then read them carefully. how you log
them?

start x using the following (assuming your shell is 'bash'):

startx > /tmp/x.log 2>&1

if your shell is 'tcsh', then:

startx >& /tmp/x.log

after you get the prompt again, look at the file /tmp/x.log and read it
carefully. look for mode line errors - that's a common cause of such a
problem. after you get done with this, just learn the rule - when you get
lots of messages - don't look for the last one first - look at them
top-to-buttom.

MS visual studio isn't free either, and thus if they payed for MS's -

Does this mean that for every packet that goes through the firewall,

Do 2 simple tests:

1. comment (#) all your fonts
2. try to run just X - not startx
3. remove any .X files you got (.Xsessions, etc..)

If 2 works, then you have problems with fonts..
if after that you have problem - re-install your X server from your package.

This can be usefull.
I found this at Checkpoint Usenet:

Here is the final list which blocks AOL, MSN, ICQ, & Yahoo only:
Blocking the IP of the messaging server is better than blocking ports. Most
messengers will probe
to find an open port.

AOL Instant Messengers:
AOLim_1 = 152.163.214.75
AOLim_2 = 152.163.214.76
AOLim_3 = 152.163.214.108
AOLim_4 = 152.163.214.109
AOLim_5 = 205.188.1.56
AOLim_6 = 205.188.4.106
AOLim_7 = 205.188.147.114
AOLim_8 = 152.163.241.121
AOLim_9 = 152.163.241.129
AOLim_10 = 152.163.242.28
AOLim_11 = 152.163.242.24
AOLim_12 = 152.163.241.120
AOLim_13 = 152.163.241.128
AOLim_14 = 152.163.241.96

ICQ Instant Messengers:
ICQ_1 = 205.188.153.0
ICQ_2 = 216.122.100.172

MSN Instant Messengers:
MSNim_1 = 207.46.183.253

Yahoo Instant Messengers:
Yahoo_1 = 24.71.200.68
Yahoo_2 = 204.71.202,73
Yahoo_3 = 204.71.200.54
Yahoo_4 = 204.71.200.55
Yahoo_5 = 204.71.200.56
Yahoo_6 = 204.71.200.57
Yahoo_7 = 204.71.177.35
Yahoo_8 = 204.71.202.59
Yahoo_9 = 204.71.202.58
Yahoo_10 = 216.115.105.214
Yahoo_11 = 204.71.201.47
Yahoo_12 = 204.71.201.48
Yahoo_13 = 216.115.105.215
Yahoo_14 = 216.136.172.221

Yahoo_19 = 216.115.107.67  es25.msg.yahoo.com
Yahoo_20 = 216.115.107.101  es26.msg.yahoo.com
Yahoo_21 = 216.115.107.102  es27.msg.yahoo.com
Yahoo_22 = 216.115.107.103  es28.msg.yahoo.com
Yahoo_23 = 216.115.107.104  es29.msg.yahoo.com

I'm having trouble configuring XFree86!

2001-04-15 Thread Jane

Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble configuring XFree86!

I have a Matrox G200 card, and I'm using Linux Slackware. I am almost
positive I configured everything right. Yet, each time I try to create
the server it gives me a weird erro message which goes something like:
_X11TranSocketUNIXConnect Can't Connect Erro=111.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Running Bank Discount program under Linux

2001-04-15 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo

Hi,

I have received the Bank Discount Online program - it's a program that
connects into the Bank Mainframes and lets you see your bank ballance, and do
some work..

The program is written in Java, and it's installing the Sun JRE 1.2

The program is starting from the DOS, and I wanted to know if anyone managed
to run it from Linux, and how...

Thanks,
Hetz
