The scripts are in /etc/runlevels. There are directories called 'default',
'nonetwork' and the like. The concept is identical to the /etc/rc.d (SVR4)
stuff. Just the names are changed. Oddly, the names of the scripts are not
prefixed with a number. And, the scripts contain bash functions like
'start', which get called in the appropriate context, instead of the case
statement in the/etc/rc.d system. They get run by /sbin/runscripts.sh. Maybe
there is a clue to how ordering is done there. Surely is it not strictly
alphabetic. But I don't know.

The optimization is market-speak. There are things multi-tasking OSs do that
can be quicker if the CPU has certain features. The things done to help NT
must surely apply to Linux as well. It is not NT only.

I'd recommend the $25 2.7. It's full 2.7, but reduced since 2.8 is due
out very soon. They are in beta2 now, with beta3 on the way. Version 2.0
is good, and free, just old so you don't see all the latest stuff. Yes,
you can apt-get dist-upgrade to new stuff in any brance, woody, testing
or unstable. I've been running 2.7 with selected unstable updates.

Libranet takes Woody (very stable) and dresses it up with late model
apps. while maintaining the stability. kde3.1, gnome 2.2, latest
versions of mozilla/galeon, etc.

2.8 beta2 is impressive. The new install is excellent.

What you say is pretty much true. But I'd say that if you want to try
out a Debian-based distribution then the coolest thing since the
invention of the microprocessor is Knoppix. And it is all free. Try it
out. I've used it to sell more people on Linux on the desktop than
anything else around. It really is an impressive distribution that has
everything for the newbie as well as for those who been around for a
while and want all the best tools. You can run it from a CD or install
it onto your hard drive. Version 3.2 supports XFS, Reiser, Ext3 and Ext2
file systems. Can't beat it.

A bit more info re:php-nuke install. This system is not on the internet
(well hidden behind a firewall)

On a fresh install of mysql, apache, php and php-nuke.

I've setup mysql with mysql_install_db Then checked ownership of
/var/lib/mysql. and is mysql:mysql

then did the mysqladmin create nuke folowed by (in
/var/www/htdocs/html/sql)

mysql nuke < nuke.sql

then to verify that the tables were imported (filled);

mysqlshow nuke

edit httpd.conf so that index looks at index.php and htdocs points to
php top dir. In my case /var/www/htdocs/html

in a browser I point to localhost and the intro screen does come up. I
click on the setup superuser and enter a user name and password. change
the login(index) to reflect what I wanted and save and logout now the
admin.php should have only run once, The next time I log in I get the
same screen and that has not changed. Now what?

I haven't created the root password for mysql yet but since this system
is not visible I'll hold off untill I get all the quirks out of
php-nuke.

This updated all the KDE packages and so far it has been working without

Memory leak ?

A user on another list observed that the memory in use in his system,

phoenix.

After rebooting my system with xfce, sylpheed and two aterm
windows running (top in one), memory used goes up 8k at every iteration
of top. There is also lpd and sshd in the system. Does top have a leak
or an error in calculation?

I'm sorry, but I've never tried Gentoo, but I'm sure there are ways :)

The start-up scripts that reside in locations in the /etc/rc.d/r0X.d
SYS4 format, say like Caldera or Redhat, then the system numbers
are the ones you modify for networking and pcmcia are, for example

 /etc/rc.d/rc.6/S10network { this is for reboot}.
  """ S07pcmcia

 /etc/rc.d/rc.0/S10network { this is for shutdown or halt }
  " "" S07pcmcia

ie, you should see something in your directory listing like
the above in there.

A lazy way to do this is to merely exchange the STARTUP numbers
sequence, so they could look something like a 'move' command by
root. From the command line.

Switch these numbers around to get the sequence you
want; They should now read something like

/etc/rc.d/rc.0/S07network
/etc/rc.d/rc.0/S10pcmcia

/etc/rc.d/rc.6/S07network
/etc/rc.d/rc.6/S10pcmcia

>From the command line, your work would look like this...

]$ su root
]$ Password?
]$ cd /etc/rc.d/rc.0

]# mv S07pcmcia S10pcmcia
]# mv S10network S07network

]# ls -al

imap

2003-04-01 Thread Jack Berger
I'm painfully aware of the fact that I don't know all that I don't know
about imap (among other things).

Anyway, the problem is that since we moved our mail server from
solaris/sendmail to msexchange, I don't see all of the mail in my inbox from
an imap client. Using mslookout I can see all messages (one would hope
anyway), but using either netscape or pine there are always a few missing in
action. As far as I know I don't do anything different from one time to the
next, and there are no special permissions on my inbox or any folders. I
keep all folders on the server along with the inbox. Moving a message from
the inbox to a folder doesn't make it visible to the client if it is
initially not seen by the client.

Any clues to what is going on? Looking on the UW imap site and a few others
devoted to imap gives no clue of this ever happening to anyone else.

Also, realizing that imap is server based, is there anyway to truley manage
mail on the server, say to delete or move a message via a client so that it
is really deleted or moved on the server? If I move a message or delete it,
any imap client sees that result, but if I then log on to the server via
mslookout, none of the changes are there. Everything is still in the inbox
folder. This obviously is a design feature of imap, but it would be good to
be able to manage folders on the server for real instead of the virtual
reality of the imap client.

Thanks,
-jhb-

PS - I'll accept condolences, but no criticism, for the move to msexchange.
I had no part in the decision. In fact I successfully beat it down for a
number of years until we were the losing party in a corporate merger. It has
been a real pita (in more ways than one).

Hey list.

As a new gentoo bigot... How does one re-arrange the startup scripts? On the
laptop thta I'm testing gentoo on, during shutdown pcmcia goes down and
takes eth0 with it... before the net-eth0 script runs when the net-eth0
script runs, since eth0 is already down, it prints a nasty message that eth0
hasn't been started yet... It's bogus.

What I think should be happening is... net-eth0 should run before pcmcia during
shutdown. If I do this manually, it works beautifully...

So, how does one re-arrange the shutdown scripts in gentoo?

makepkg will do what you want.

Put everything in /home/collins/package/usr/local/lib, including links.
cd to package
Run makepkg phoenix_libs.tgz
Answer y to both questions

y to the first question will delete the links and create an install
script,
/home/collins/package/install/doinst.sh. The install script will create
the
links when you install the package. If you answer no the links are just
copied into the package and no install script is created.

The install script is the difference between a slackware package and a
plain
tarred archive. /home/collins/package/phoenix_libs.tgz is the slackware
package. It is just a tarred file of everything under
/home/collins/package.

As root run installpkg phoenix_libs.tgz to install the package.
Look at /var/log/packages/phoenix_libs to verify.
As root run removepkg phoenix_libs to remove it.

Yeah, PPro's are one of the best, even if not the fastest. My mirror is
on an HP Vectra running dual PPro Overdrive processors at 333Mhz with
all scsi disks. I don't have a reason to switch as long as it's doing an
adequate job. It serves up pages as fast as one of our dual Xeon Dells.

Since php-nuke stores all of its fields in mysql dbase "nuke" I would
venture a guess that this is a mysql access problem. Have you tryed
running "nukesql.php"? I'm just curious as to what error messages you
get in doing so. I'm going to install postgreql later on today and see
if things are any different. I've never had to chase so much information
on the net just to install a package. What gets me is that on a fresh
install of mysql the ownership of /var/lib/mysql is correct or at least
as indicated in the mysql docs. Once you run "mysql_install_db" the
ownership changes to root:root and mysql can't read its own files untill
you change the ownership to what it was. I've created and tested dbase
"nuke" and that seems to look ok yet when I run "nukesql.php" I keep
getting the unable to find dbname "" please edit config.php and try
again. Yet in config.php I have dbname = "nuke" but for some reason its
not read or seen. I'll be checking my "mysql's .err in
/var/lib/mysql later on today and see if it can provide me with some
sort of an insight, At the moment, Im at a lose.

Not a P II? I thought the Pro topped out at 200. Intel had a P II 333
upgrade for Pros
(http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/DP081098.HTM) which
apparently fits in the Pro socket. As far as the question is concerned, it
doesn't matter--both are i686.

You can get remanufactured systems from

Dell at http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/products/line_notebooks.htm

and Gateway at http://www.gateway.com/reman/hm_notebook_matrix.shtml

These are the pages for home users. There are also ones available for
business; search "remanufactured" or "refurbished" at the main site.

These systems usually come with a warrantee that is the same as a new
system. I've bought a used Dell Desktop at about 50% the cost of a new
one and had great service from it.

Dell has a site (you'll have to Google it) where they sell their
off-lease notebooks thru E-bay. Best prices I've seen, you get to pick
your specs, and you're protected.

Ted I too am having either a perms problem of some sort or something..

Got any suggestion for logs to look at? Normal ones such as mesages,
httpd/access_log and error_log dont seem to have anything in them...

I have a php.info page which shows up in a graphical context (colored
borders etc) but upon accessing the htl section of php, I get blanks... no
errors in error_log either, page loads with htm headers and thats it.

PHP-nuke again

2003-04-01 Thread Ted Ozolins
A couple of things kept messing up my efforts to install php-nuke. It
seemed that the perms on /var/lib/mysql before starting is owned by

ont this dir changes to root:root thus mysql cant access it and creating

think a dbase problem. It would sure be nice to know what the perms for
mysql and php-nuke dir should be. This is sure starting to baffle me..
