Well, I tried and tried and failed until I finally got it right! I used your stepbystep, Lonnie and after I got the latest of everything like you said to do, I compiled. I got right up to xine-ui and got errors about aalib. I checked and I had it. I tried the other front-end and got some major error there. I gave up. I tried lots of stuff to get mplayer to work. Well, today I gave compiling xine-ui one more shot and this time I looked in aptitude and found there is more than just plain aalib - there's aalib-dev and aalib-bin. I install both with apt-get and then configured xine-ui. Bingo! And it works flawlessly! This is terrific. Of course this is on top of the upgrade to a geforce2 agp video card and using the nvidia drivers. Man, this was a fun learning experience. I had just about everything wrong possible, but got it all sorted out. Thanks so much for the help. You are absolutely right that xine works where mplayer wouldn't. It boils down to my hardware being insufficient for the job - seems to be the video hardware. I'm doing two things. I'm getting another movie - an earlier one that may run. The reason I think it might is that this one I have now for testing would not run in Windows and I had two other movies that did. So far even with the 4MB graphics card that I have - PCI, I have gotten the video to play with sound using mplayer in linux *if* I use -framedrop which will drop frames in order to sync the sound and video. That is a lot more than I got in Windows using PowerDVD. I bought an AGP video card with 32Mb of video ram today. I'll try it first in the Microtel and leave it there if it works right. If not, I'll put it in my other computer and move the drive back there. In this process I've learned quite a bit more about video thanks to a helpful person on the mplayer list. I've been wondering for a few years ever since I put my computer together - what AGP was. I never bothered to look it up. Well, now I know. Very handy info when you are trying to do heavy video work. I may go with ogle after all is said and done, because it really is a very simple program to install and operate. Nice thing about mplayer, though, is that you can use it in console mode. I'm thinking I read something about ogle being able to do that too. DVD for Linux - audio problem
Hi. I got the Plextor Combo CDRW/DVD player. I can burn cds in linux and use that fine. I installed MPlayer and compiled my kernel to enable dma. I then figured out how to use hdparm to enable the dma on hdc and still have the thing set to scd0. So, I now get the movie going just fine at the right speed with audio. Very nice for about 15 seconds and then the audio cuts out. The video keeps going which makes me think that the bus speed is ok. Anyone here know anything about this? Maybe MPlayer is a little complex for the job. I was going to try Xine, but I saw that they don't decode. I had to install the lib for css separately for MPlayer too; so maybe that is what you do with Xine. MPlayer mentions possible buggy sound driver in their docs, but the sound is perfect for that short time. -- Anita GnuPG key: 1024D/9EDAC910 ___ Linux-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe/Suspend/Etc -> http://www.linux-sxs.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

That helped a lot. Now I've decided to skip the dvd writing. I really only wanted to read dvd and write to cd; so I'm looking at a Plextor Combo that does that. It says that DMA must be enabled and give directions for doing so in Windows. I'm thinking this will mean recompiling this into my kernel. I have two machines - one is a Walmart Microtel and that has several of the DMA selections enabled in the kernel. I'm not sure what it has in the Lindows kernel, but I installed plain Debian 3.0 on it and it gave me a kernel with DMA. My other computer is one I put together about 3 years ago. It has an Ultra DMA 66, but the kernel does not have any of the DMA selections made. I think that is because I did a fresh compile of the kernel and had to figure out what to select. I'm thinking I'll try a fresh install of debian on that machine to see what I end up with in the kernel. Or, I might just try a recompile with whatever looks good under DMA. WP8 and libsafe problem
Someone wrote to me trying to figure out why WP8 would not install on RH for him. He found out that the problem was that he was running libsafe. He said in order to install or to run WP with libsafe he needed to do the following: --- + remove the libsafe reference in /etc/ld.so.preload if this exists + unset the environment variable LD_PRELOAD before running the installation script + unset LD_PRELOAD before running xwp; I use the following script to call wordperfect: #!/bin/sh unset LD_PRELOAD exec /opt/WP8/wpbin/xwp "$@" & Obviously the path to xwp must be adjusted to the directory chosen during installation. -- He wrote to me, because I had the page about WP being installed on RedHat. Well, actually, if /etc/fstab is set up correctly, then 'mount /mnt/floppy' would work. I have mine set to mount any type: /etc/fstab entry: /dev/fd0/floppy autouser, noauto 0 0 As you can see, I just use plain /floppy for the mount point. The 'auto' after that is so that it will mount either ext2 or vfat or msdos. The 'noauto' is just so that the thing is not trying to mount upon boot. When I want the floppy, I type 'mount /floppy' - well actually I type 'mount /f' and hit the TAB to autofill. I imagine that there is a difference in the /etc/fstab on this new version from what you had in the older version. That and you may not have the mount point that was in that one either. The cookie file # can also be specified in .lynxrc or on the commandline. COOKIE_FILE:~/.lynx_cookies # PERSISTENT_COOKIES is tested only if Lynx was compiled with # EXP_PERSISTENT_COOKIES. Use this flag to disable the feature. PERSISTENT_COOKIES:TRUE -- I also set dselect so that lynx was on hold so that a new version would not be installed. If you use apt-get, you need to change lynx from 'install' to 'hold' in /etc/apt/selection.lst At least that is what I figured, since it would replace it with a newer version when one comes out and I assume it would put in the default without persistent-cookies. Isn't the kernel altered during the installation process - well at least the modules being used vary depending on the system, right? So how would the .config file from a kernel-source contain the information on what a person's current kernel has. What I'm getting at is that it is easy on the first recompile to omit things that are needed especially when they are not there by default (like PPP) and it would be most helpful to just be able to have that .config file and run 'make oldconfig' or 'make menuconfig' and add or subtract from a known entitiy. When you recompile the kernel you need to copy both the kernel and the System.map to /boot. I tried again this morning and found that I need to do this with >> the exclude file: >> /home/httpd/html/linux-sxs/* > I didn't try it with making a file with all those things in it. I just made these two files - exclude.tar and include.tar. They look like this: exclude.tar /home/ajlewis2/staroffice/* /home/ajlewis2/MyLinuxGuide/* /home/ajlewis2/mail/* /home/ajlewis2/Mail* /home/ajlewis2/readmail/* /home/ajlewis2/yld* /home/ajlewis2/blt* /home/ajlewis2/.netscape* include.tar /home/ajlewis2/ Then I ran: tar cvf /home/tempbu/ajlewis2.tar -T /home/ajlewis2/include.tar -X /home/ajlewis2/exclude.tar To see if it would include the right thing and exclude the others. That worked for me. I didn't evaluate the script, because I don't know that much about it, but it looks like you are making a large file for the exclude that contains all the files you want to not backup. I did mine with just the directory names and the asterisk as above. Some I have several directories with the beginning like 'blt-2000, blt-2001, blt-2002' and I just used blt* to cover that. It seems to work without putting the '/*' at the end. But with something like ~/mail/ I had to put 'mail/*' to get it to work. Maybe someone who can read your script better than I can will give you some advice on it. I tried again this morning and found that I need to do this with the exclude file: /home/httpd/html/linux-sxs/* Just add the asterisk to tell it what files (all files). For the include file, I did not use the asterisk. Speaking of Archives...
This newsgroup (at least that is what it is to me) seems to also be an email list, right? Two questions. How does one get to the archives? I noticed before that I could not resurrect the previous posts like I can with linux.debian.user. I can do a key command in slrn and get the parent and the children of the posts. They are never available on this group. Is that just how it is, or should I be able to get them? debian.user also seems to be about half stuff from an email list too.
