More Apache issues
Greets, Since upgrading to Apache 2.0.44, a few things appear to not work any longer. For instance, trying to start apache from withing Webmin no longer works. I've looked at the paths in the module configuration and everything appears to be in order. It gives a message "Failed to start apache", but upon doing a ps -ax, I have 6 httpd's running. So it appears that it is in fact running. Which is fine. But since the Webmin module thinks it failed, I never get the the 'Stop Apached' option, or 'Restart' option for that matter. Also, if I attempt to set up virtual hosts (name, not address), it ignores the virtual hosts and will only allow me to access the default host. I had two virtual hosts working prior to upgrading. I have given the aliases 'C' records in bind configuration etc. Any pointers or info on using apache 2.x with Webmin 1.070? Re: Apache Problem
Ok. It was the path. Thanks. But now I have a different problem. I like to manage Apache through Webmin. But when I try to start apache from within the Webmin module, it says "Failed to Start Apache", but doing ps -ax shows 5 instances of httpd. In addition, I can no longer get virtual hosts to work. I can only get to the default host. Does anybody know of any issues with apache 2.x and webmin? If your are in the /usr/local/apache2 directory you have to have the ./ in there so it knows to look in the current directory for the script. If you are in a directory other than the /usr/local/apache2 directory apachectl should work if you put /usr/local/apache2 in your path. Or you can use the full path to apachectl. If you want to start Apache at boot time stick /usr/local/apache2/apachectl start in the /etc/rc.local file. > > Does this version NOT have the /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd script? I believe when I once used Apache from the default install of the OS it had the /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd and other times when I compiled from source it didn't. Apache problem
Hi, I just upgraded to Apache 2.0.44 (from source) on a Caldera 3.1 Linux box. Installation went fine, however I no longer have a /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd file to launch httpd. I did track down the /usr/local/apache2/apachectl file which appears to have the same function. In other words, typing in "./apachectl start" will start the daemon. My problem is that I can't make it executable! I have tried every 'chmod' combination possible. I've tried chmod a+x and even that doesn't work. It needs to have the "./" in front of it. Does this version NOT have the /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd script? Why can't I make it executable? Samba and profile stuff
Hey all, I have a Samba server running on COL 2.4.18. It is set up as a DC, complete with Home directories etc. My problem is that if I delete something from the desktop of my workstation, it doesn't get deleted from /$Home/desktop. Then when I log back in, its back on my desktop. I want to use profiles, but not necessarily 'roaming' profiles and would like to continue to have $Home directories, but I would like the profile to be kept locally. Can this be done? Linux choking on large files
I recently began having problems transferring large files to my COL 2.4.18 kernel and Samba 2.22. I first noticed the problem when a large email attachment got hung in the queue. I tried to flush it but it was locked for sending. (I use my server as a mail relay for my network, along with fetchmail and procmail). When I tried to flush it, I would temporarily lose network access to my server. No Samba, SSH, or Webmin. Then it would start working again. Later on I was attempting to copy a 45MB file to the server and I lost all connectivity. Once the copy errored out and I canceled the copy, the network came back. The only errors I have found were on the console of the server: hda: irq timeout : Status=0xD0 {Busy} IDE0: reset: success In addition I saw this once: ll_rw_block: device 03:03: only 512-char blocks implemented (1152). Suspecting a hard drive problem, I changed to runlevel 1, then dismounted the partitions and did an e2fsck -c on them. It found and fixed a few problems, which I suspected it would since it had been hard booted a couple times in the last year due to power failures etc. Also, I ran some low-level hardware diagnostics on the hard drives and they came up clean. Any ideas what may be causing this issue? The logs are clean. RE: Client Switching to Linux
All good advice, but I would still keep a Wintel box around as a backup. In theory it shouldn't be needed, but try telling the client that when the box with VMWare blows up and he can't do his books. Or when he complains that he doesn't like the performance hit by running multiple O.S.'s. Besides, there is nothing inherently wrong with keeping 'extra hardware around'. Besides, its just good sense to have some sort of fallback when implementing ANY type of new solution, hardware or software. Most larger corporations IT depts. will beta test new apps/O.S.'s/Hardware for months before rolling out. There's good reason for it. email server question
My COL 3.1 server acts as a router/gateway and mail server running smtp. My workstations are set up with my server as the POP3 and smtp server. Fetchmail goes out and retrieves mail from POP3 accounts periodically and dumps it in the corresponding linux account. This makes getting email appear to be faster and works great. My problem is I am using a dial-up account and pppd on the server. When I try to do a send/receive on a workstation, it fails if the server is not connected. RE: Still the best...
After checking the UnitedLinux web site, I have to say, this is the smartest thing anybody's done for Linux in quite some time. All the different distros, package managers etc only serve to confuse matters from the end-users' point of view. Even if it lacks a few features or isn't exactly what everybody wants, at least it's a step toward some sort of standard so everybodys speaking the same language. What would really help it along would be if Red Hat would get involved. Right or wrong, many seem to think that Red Hat is the standard. Imagine how much easier it would be if we all had the same basic file structure (with regard to config files), same config files, same package manager etc. Should be interesting. RE: Opinions Needed
Lonni, Have you ever just answered a question? Without the sarcastic overtones and comments? Your comment contributed absolutely nothing to the question being asked. Perhaps a more diplomatic answer would have been: "I think its just fluff because others are running it on PPC and IA64." Perhaps that would throw others off and think there was an imposter posing as you. Hmmm. New KDE3 install question
I just upgraded to Xfree86 4.2 and KDE3 on a server machine (COL 3.11, 2.4.18 kernel). Everything went amazingly well. I may even write a SxS just to consolidate the process. I do have two minor issues. First off, my login window is still the old KDE2 login style. I have no idea where to look to change that configuration. The second issue, my splash screen crashes. No specific error message other than that it crashed. Neither is detrimental to the operation of the system but I would like to clean it up. Opinions Needed
Suse is supposedly built specifically for Intel processors. Are there any real-world advantages or is it just fluff? Also, whats the general opinion of Gentoo thus far? I think Portage is awsome. The need for an internet connection is a drawback but it also has many advantages. My Gentoo install seems much less bloated and runs quite smoothly. Including KDE3. RE: Linux Router's
Well said, Bill. I have tried to make that point in the past and it simply escalated into a flame war. The same holds true for firewalls. Many argue its a 'cop out' to buy a black box solution when you can get Linux 'free'. Folks who aren't in the IT/IS services business simply don't realize of the implications of utilizing a relative non-standard solution. The reality is, you better have 2 old PC's, 4 old NIC's and a Ghost image of the original machine. Thats the only way you'll be able to get back on line in a time-line comparable to a black box solution. And at the end of the day, thats the only thing the 'brass' will notice. It has been my experience that inaction is invariably 'easier' than taking action. i.e It's easier to not mow the lawn than it is to mow the lawn. Re: Spamming Question
A client of mine recently had their AOL account disabled. When they inquired why, they were told that over 1,000 porn emails had been mass-mailed from their account. Needless to say they didn't send the emails. Somehow their email address was spoofed. Of course their first problem is using AOL. They have been warned. My point is, it's pathetic when the largest most prolific ISP in the world doesn't have the means in place to prevent this crap. Port-Sentry has saved my butt a number of times. Gentoo Installation
Howdy, I downloaded and installed the stage3 i686 tarball. All in all, it wasn't bad. However I couldn't get grub to install. I attempted to install it according to the docs: >Grub root (hd0,0) >Grub setup (hd0) The first command worked fine. However the second is giving me problems. When I do this I get one of two messages. Either an error saying it couldn't find a stage1 file (it looks in two different locations, dont recall them though), or if it does find it, it says the device string is unrecognizable. These aren't verbatim, but thats the basic message. My drive is set up as follows: 1st partition 385MB Boot Primary 2nd partition 200MB Swap Logical 3rd partition 9GB Root Logical 4th partition Fat32 w/Win98 already instlled and running. The Swap and Root are on the same Primary partition. This is how the partitions show up in Partition Magic. But if you go by sectors, the FAT32 partition is actually the 1st partition. Then the Boot, Swap and Root partitions. The FAT32 partion is 32GB. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get this beast going with the existing Win98 FAT32 partition? Is it possible to install Grub to the Win98 partition w/out losing that OS? Other suggestions? RE: Linux-users digest, Vol 1 #654 - 14 msgs
All of the advice given is good advice. But I would like to add, stay clear of Travan format drives. Very finicky, expensive tapes. If it will do the trick for you, a somewhat outdated, but reliable inexpensive solution would be DAT DDS2 drive. Tapes are a couple bucks apiece and can handle 8GB compresses. Next in line is the DDS3 at 24GB compressed. Then comes DDS4, but they are probably pricier than what you're looking for. Error in boot screen
When my system is booting I get a few errors. One of which is DS:No Socket Drivers Loaded. Which service/daemon is generating this? Or could there be more than one? Also, is there any kind of buffer or log that stores the boot messages or messages when changing run levels? I have used dmesg but don't get the same results I get when booting. Ok, screw it. If I decided I wanted to get rid of ALL KDE installations and start from scratch with just KDE3, which directories would I need to delete? After installing QT 3.0.3 I've noticed that when using vnc, if I open a shell on the linux box and do a 'set', my paths are not correct. Qt 3.0.3
Well, I thought I had Qt 3 istalled. Without going into details, it did not properly install. So I pulled it out and tried again. I un-tar'd it to /usr/local/ then renamed the resulting dir qt. Did ./configure -thread. No errors. Did make. No errors. Did make install and get the following: (these are just the last several lines) 1 cp: `/usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qplatformdefs.h' and `/usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-2 g++/qplatformdefs.h' are the same file 3 make[2]: [install] Error 1 (ignored) 4 make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/qt/qmake' 5 cd src/moc && make 6 make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/qt/src/moc' 7 make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qmake.conf', needed by `Makefile'. Why is it trying to copy a file to itself? Secondly, if I am reading line 7 correctly, it can't find /usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qmake.conf. Am I right? And it makes sense. I checked /usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++ and it was empty. If thats the case, here are some observations. After doing ./configure and before doing 'make', there were qmake.conf and qplatformdefs.h in every platform folder in /usr/local/qt/mkspecs. But after doing 'make' and before doing 'make install', they were all gone (the files, not the folders). Knowing this, I started from scratch and made copies of qmake.conf and qplatformdefs.h and put them aside for save keeping. (after doing ./configure -thread) Before doing 'make install', I put the files in /usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++. Then I ran 'make install'. Got the same errors. But, when I looked at qmake.conf and qplatformdefs.h they both contained error messages as the ONLY text. qmake.conf contained 'Content-length: 61 Failed to open /usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qmake.conf :' and qplatformdefs.h contained 'Content-length: 66 Failed to open /usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qplatformdefs.h :'. Here are my /root/.profile entries: QTDIR=/usr/local/qt PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH MANPATH=$QTDIR/doc/man LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib export QTDIR PATH MANPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH QMAKESPEC PATH I've found nothing of use at Trolltech. RE: Make errors
I checked out the link Tim posted. It does indeed say 0.4.2 requires KDE 3. Now that we've established that everybody knows how to read... I was in fact trying to build 0.4.2, however I was getting conflicting information from a different source. It clearly stated KDE 2.2.x. http://apps.kde.com/uk/0/info/vid/5575? Make errors
This is related to the issues I had with installing Qt 3.0.3. I finally got it to install. I was missing some necessary switches. It installed without error. Now, the app I'm trying to install (kmyfirewall) is puking during make. This program is supposed to run under kde 2.2.x, which is what I'm using. What should I be looking for? RE: QT Install problems
I haven't seen all of this thread but thought I'd share some of the issues I've had with installing QT 3.0.3. Make ./configure went off without a hitch, as did Make. But when I attempted Make Install I got No rule to make target ../linux-g++/qmake.conf needed by Makefile' After looking in linux-g++, there was NO qmake.conf. So I started from scratch. But first I made a copy of qmake.conf. Then tried it again. After doing a Make then Make Install I checked for ../linux-g++ and again the qmake.conf was gone. So I put the copy back there and tried it again. Same thing, except the error message was the only text in the qmake.conf file! On a whim I did a make clean before doing a make (maybe not a good idea. I was willing to try anything). Then I put fresh copies of qmake.conf and qplatformdefs.h in ../linux-g++/ and then did a make install once again. This time it finished without error, although it took hours, literally. However when I attempted to install Kmyfirewall, it errored out saying that Qt >= 3.0.2 ( library qt-mt) not found. Thats where it is now. QT Install problems
I'm trying to install QT 3.0.3 from qt-x11-free-3.0.3.tar.gz. It compiles fine. Takes forever but it finishes successfully. But when I do a 'make install', I get this - [root@server qt]# make install make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/qt' cd qmake && make make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/qt/qmake' make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'. make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/qt/qmake' cd qmake && make install make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/qt/qmake' [ -d /usr/local/qt/bin ] || mkdir -p /usr/local/qt/bin cp -f /usr/local/qt/bin/qmake /usr/local/qt/bin cp: /usr/local/qt/bin/qmake: No such file or directory make[2]: [install] Error 1 (ignored) [ -d /usr/local/qt ] || mkdir -p /usr/local/qt cp -r -f /usr/local/qt/mkspecs /usr/local/qt make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/qt/qmake' cd src/moc && make make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/qt/src/moc' make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/local/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++/qmake.conf', needed by `Makefile'. I looked and the file isn't there. When it was compiling I saw references to that file and it appeared that it existed and all was fine. I need QT to install kfirewall. solved ndc dumpdb problem
For some reason this command wasn't dumping the bind cache, although I proved it was caching. I ran ndc stop then ndc start while working on an unrelated issue, then on a whim I did ndc dumpdb and it worked. The strange thing is, I have restarted the server numerous times since the problem surfaced. Anyway, now it works. Thought I'd share that. Bind and ndc dumpdb
Straight to the point, it doesn't dump to the file specefied in the config file. In fact it doesn't dump anywhere that I can tell. Logs just say "dumping database" or a simile thereof. I have tried different permissions on the file (named_dump.db) but it doesn't matter. I have also tested to see if the box is acutally resolving names using dig. The first time I do a 'dig' there's about 250ms delay. The second time there's maybe a few ms. And it says its getting it from my server. So I believe its caching. Any ideas? Yea, you're probably right. Why would they put sound options under "Sound". Thats too obvious. Sheesh. Active-Filter option in pppd
I have looked high and low for an example of the syntax to use this in my /etc/ppp/options file. I have seen references to tcpdump, but that doesn't help because I don't know how to use that either. My problem is I have fetchmail checking mail every 5 minutes. However, it keeps my connection alive when nobody is using a workstation. I would like to filter smb packets as well as pop3 and smtp ports. In other words, it would only run fetchmail when there are active internet users. Thanks, Brian

RE: Log Errors
Mike, Thanks for that explanation! Most of the docs out there tell you what to do and when to do it but they don't tell you why! I need to know the 'nuts and bolts'. Once I know that, I can fix anything myself. I am indeed running 2.4.18. I recompiled my kernel last night and went through xconfig slowly and deliberately. And guess what? Even though I didn't compile in sound, I was getting a char-major-14 error in my logs. I read at another site on the web that even though sound isn't compiled in, it will generate those errors if an application attempts to use sound. It also advised putting 'alias char-major-14 off' in my modules.conf file to stop the error from appearing in my logs. Now that is something nobody else ever suggested. An app would try to use sound, which would in turn try to load a module that didn't exist and thus create an error. The end result being there is nothing wrong with my kernel or the way I compiled it. That of course doesn't explain all of the errors (the rtc thing was my fault) but it does suggest we shouldn't jump to 'compile errors' as a first resort. Thanks again for your detailed explanation. RE: Log Errors
Yes, I had rebooted. And the only thing I did that I can think of is I deleted my /usr/src/linux-2.4.2 directory because I had upgraded my kernel to 2.4.18. Where is it determined that it would be looking in /lib/modules/2.4.2... rather that /lib/modules/2.4.18? Are the modules placed in the modules directory at compile time? I checked my logs for yesterday and the only error was the rtc.o error. I'm still trying to get a handle on how the various directories are created and how the various files are called. Once I have a firm understanding of that, it will be easier to troubleshoot myself. Thanks, Brian > > What did you do as root on March 16? What you're saying makes sense except I built the new kernel about a week ago or more and these errors only show up on March 16. In addition to the kernel itself and modules.conf, where eles could modules be called from? RE: POP before SMTP
Be careful how you set it up. If you want it to sign your messages with a particular domain, keep in mind if it is NOT a valid, registered domain, like mine isn't, and the recipient does a reply, it will get bounced. When email is sent, the DNS servers look at the domain portion and ignore the username portion. It then does the equivalent of an nslookup with type set to MX to find the recipient mail server. Your domain needs to be registered with appropriate MX and ETRN records. In my case, I send using my own sendmail, but for receiving I use fetchmail. In addition, for internal email addresses I use Address Mapping (virtuser). This redirects specific email addresses to internal POP3 linux accounts, so it never leaves my network. Ok, I have never recompiled my kernel. If that file was created when I initially installed COL, then it's gone now. Is there a way to recompile my kernel, exactly as it is now, without changing anything? I would like to get rid of that error message but don't want to risk waxing things. bind question
Hi, I'm running a bind caching server. The problem is when I do an ndc dumpdb then check the dump file, it's empty. Is there a step-by-step way I can verify that I am properly caching dns resloves? My windows box points to my COL server for name resolution and it works fine. But I don't know if it's caching. One test I have done is something like 'dig www.website.com'. The first time I run it, it might take a second or two, but the second time it only take between 180 and 255ms. But I don't know if that tells me what I need to know. Any help would be appreciated. Brian
RE: SOLVED! Re: SOS! my LInux box is self destructing! (long)
Glad to hear you got it. Its a scary deal, to say the least. One lesson I have learned when working with linux is that when things wig out, look at what's NOT running as much as what is. This is generally ass-backwards from the Windows mentality. On more than one occassion I've fought with my system trying to figure out which module or daemon was causing problems when in reality my problems were caused by scripts either not being executable or not having the proper ownership bits set. BTW, I would like to run an X session on my Windows box. What does it entail?
