[M100] NEC 8201 LCD

2022-04-13 Thread Robert J. Hutchins
Question:

My NEC 8201 has a defect, one half column is always lit up.

I disassembled it, cleaned the strips but no change.

Is this usually a screen memory defect?

If anyone has a Model 100 LCD, in good shape I would like to purchase it.

Thank you

Robert J. Hutchins

Thanks much, and wow.

If you look at page 71, pages 70 and 71 are the same, but 70 is a low
res scan and 71 is a high res scan. It shows both the main and option
roms right next to each other and sure enough shows that their pinouts
are different.

I have uploaded a cropped and de-duped copy to archive.org, so for
everyone else, you can see page 70 here:
https://archive.org/details/kyotronic-kc-85-service-manual/
(download the pdf, the web viewer is super blurry)
https://archive.org/download/kyotronic-kc-85-service-manual/Kyotronic_KC-85_
Service_Manual.pdf

I have the user guide and basic manuals, and I just noticed that the
user guide the section at the end with all the interface pinouts,
doesn't even mention the option rom socket at all, even though it does
include the system bus socket. Though does not include the ram sockets
either. Even the service manual doesn't mention the option rom socket in
the same section where all the other interfaces are described. Strange.

I guess this means that if you ever wanted to create an option rom for
KC-85, you'd actually have to use a Teeprom or REX to do it!

This is super strange. Maybe the M100 pinout was not invented custom for
the M100 after all? Like maybe Sharp already had a mask rom model with
this pinout that Kyocera & Tandy just selected from Sharp's existing
offerings? Or Kyocera created the custom pinout just for the option rom
for some reason, and Tandy just kept it and even went further to apply
it to the main rom, again "for some reason"?

Martin,

With key trace problems, what you want to do is check continuity with the
ohm meter function of your VOM...
Visually follow the trace to see where it goes.

Hi,

Before I ask a friend to de-solder and re-solder the + = keyswitch on my
Model 100 I thought I would check if the traces were in good order.

Does anyone know where on the back of the keyboard I should place the red
and black pointers of my Voltmeter to check that the traces to the + =
keyswitch are okay ? Also, what numbers should I expect to see on my
Voltmeter screen when I do this ?

It's just the one wedge, you pop it under the back of the M100 and it just sort

Quick Amazon search for "Laptop Foot" or Universal Laptop/Notebook stands will

my SO as I ran from the checkout to the Starbucks inside, ripped my rubberized

able to get a few M100 LCDs, and the glass is the same. I may try to swap one
of the M100 LCD glasses into the 102 LCD frame/PCB and then use parts from both
PCBs to make one good 102.

I had the LCD frame on the 102 apart several times fixing a bad trace and
diagnosing the fault was in the glass itself so it may or may not last one more
round. It would be fun to takes parts of three machines and make on good one
though.

The black screen is an indication that the LCD is getting power but not
getting initialized properly. This is most likely because the system is not
booting properly. The RAM modules can fail causing a no boot situation, or
it might be stuck in rest, etc.

If you want, I'll have a crack at repairing it. They are very similar to the

The unit is in good physical condition.

I also have several Model 100s and a 102 which I have been able to upgrade

I am of two minds about the NEC though.

TELCOM has no file transfer ability. All it can do is capture text from the
serial port to a file and it can read a file and send it out the serial port.

That is missing too many things. No binary data, no machine language programs,
not even 8-bit text, no error detection, let alone error correction, it can't
even tell when a file begins or ends out of any other data coming in the serial
port, nor can tell the host side when sending a file.

You have to do all those kinds of things yourself with separate programs in a
dozen laborious, inefficient, error-prone steps before and after the actual
transfer, to manage to get a file transferred that way.
(encode the file with some kind of utility, generate a checksum of either the
original file or maybe the encoded file, start the capture on one end, start
sending from the other end, somehow arrange to ensure that there is not a
single byte of other junk included in the capture before or after the file
contents, run a decoder program on the receiving end to unpack the encoded file
back into it's real form, run a checksum program to verify that, delete the
encoded version, have an empty machine so that the ram can all be used up on
having both the file you want and the 2x size encoded copy of it and the
decoder app all in ram at the same time (so no big files), and then how did you
get the encoder or decoder app onto the 100 in the first place? Manually type
it in? Cassette? TELCOM capture an ascii format BASIC program and just hope it
wasn't corrupted?

You only do that once per reset simply because the system rom provides no other
option besides the cassette interface (for instance TELCOM has no xmodem), and
you physically have no choice. So you do that once, just to bootstrap some kind
of software to do that job for real the rest of the time, until the next time
you wipe the machine.

I'm not sure what exactly is the question. Yes you can place files on a
computer and download them to the 100. That's exactly all a TPDD emulator (akak
tpdd server) does is exactly that.

It's not FTP though. FTP is a tcp/ip protocol. There is no such thing as tcp/ip
on a 100.

So I've got a "new" working M100, but it only has 1 RAM module in it. My old
non-working is full. I want to remove the ones from the old one, but when I
tried to pull them out, they just don't move. I'm afraid I might break them.
But I'm sure I just need to pull them out, right?

Also I have 1 new module with very long legs. When I tried putting it into one
of the available spaces in the "new" device, it just went in maybe half the way
up the legs. Again, I'm afraid if I push too hard I might break something. Am I
just being paranoid?

I'm looking through Birt and Josh videos, but I don't see where they removed or
inserted these modules.

I believe the original color was a "Bone White" (slight grey and very slight

very much like my T102, which has never been exposed to sunlight or tobacco

Agreed. The M100 was originally that off-white color, so I don?t think it will

Agreed. The M100 was originally that off-white color, so I don?t think it will
get much whiter than that.

I don't really need it so how about $20 plus shipping?

Hi Robert,

If you still have that M-102 keyboard flat cable, I'll take it off your hands.
I mangled mine in a previous operation.

Cheers,Bert

Robert Hutchins: The 102 has a flat flex cable - it's a thin bit of plastic
with copper laid down on it. It's not like the connectors that you see on the
100, where yes, ide cable is just the right wire.

Perhaps217: I did some looking on this subject. The original display FFC is
1.25mm pitch, 152mm long (measured with calipers).
I thought that was Molex part #15168-0375 , but I ended up buying Molex part
#15168-0379 (a 202 mm FFC) as the 152 mm version was not available quantity 1.
That turned out to be a bit on the thin side, but worked fine once I backed it
with a bit of kapton tape.

Good luck!

Hello.

I’m looking to replace the 18-pin and 30-pin flat-flex-cables in my Model 102,
and was wondering if anyone can confirm the dot pitch. I did order some 1.0 mm
dot pitch from DigiKey which don’t appear to be correct - the FFCs are too
narrow:

*   686618152001

*   0982670475

If someone has the information to share, and perhaps even a known good source
that would be great.

Thanks, Alan

If you are selling pieces, I could use a M102 lcd and motherboard.

I'm somewhat interested in doing one of those "Raspberry Pi in a 100 case"
projects. Does anyone have a dead 100/102 for sale, and at what price? Due
to the nature of the project, the screen could be total trash (even gone),
the PCB etc. doesn't matter... only thing important would be an intact
keyboard.

If you have one to get rid of, shoot me a price (and shipping)... off or on
list is fine.

Yours, Russell

This is what my Model 100s screen looks like now. I cold started, removed the
REX and even swapped out another main ROM and no change. I was using TS-DOS to
download files from Dlplus when it happened although I have no idea if that is
the reason. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone do repairs? Sorry to burden everyone

Actually I would download the STL file and have Shapeways or Sculpteo print it
rather than use the Thingiverse option, because this part has small detailed
features that are difficult to do a good job with FDM printing. I'd rather get
it printed by SLS printing.

I'll post some links with that all preconfigured in a while so you don't have
to figure all that out.

Subject: [M100] Model 100 Boot Issue?

Delving deeper into the mystery: With no batteries in the tray and no adapter
powering the unit I measured the voltage of the (nominally) 3.6V 80mah backup
battery at 4.3 VDC. I had replaced the original with this battery a few years
ago and it appears to be in good shape. (I bought mine on eBay).

I also checked the power switch and the adapter socket for continuity; both
passed. I unplugged the cable to the display and checked for corrosion; I
can't see any evidence in the cable, the battery tray or the motherboard in
that area. I looked up crystal X1, which seemed to have a foreign substance
around its base: either glue / insulator or something has leaked. I don't know
if there is anything in a crystal that could leak, but I couldn't test the
crystal directly anyway.

Instead I found the 80C85 and located pins 1, 20 and 37, and attached a
frequency counter to 20 and 37. The counter was set to sweep from 1.5 MHz to 3
MHZ. With power applied to the motherboard the counter never "latched" on any
frequency.

It's too soon to blame the crystal, though: Referring to the troubleshooting
matrix #1 in the Service Manual, I checked everything listed up until I got to
the "converter transformer", which was not referenced by part number. I assume
it is the one near the power switch, and I took a guess as to which was pin 1.
If I guessed right, I did not find the expected voltage.

I removed and replaced C82 and C83 as recommended but that did not solve the
problem. I took some pictures for the benefit of any interested parties:
